Room for Everyone. Over 30 years ago the ITLA was formed with the goal that every member shall be treated fairly, equally no matter how large or small, and allowed to pursue raising Longhorns as they so choose.
The ITLA has followed this path by providing services and avenues for all breeders to be able to participate in the areas that interest them in raising Longhorns. Through the years, opportunities such as A.I., Embryo Transfer, Cloning, DNA, etc. have all gone before the ITLA Board for approval so breeders interested in participating could do so. The ITLA is not in the business of mandatory requirements when opportunities come along, but believes strongly that members have the right to choose what they wish to pursue. The most recent new opportunity, approved by the ITLA Board, is the acceptance of Miniature Longhorns for registration. This issue of the Longhorn Drover highlights the Miniature Longhorn in the industry today and no doubt is an introduction of something new to many readers. A.I., Embryo Transfer, Cloning, and DNA, etc. are not for everyone. Miniature Longhorns will not be for everyone either. But, that is what makes the ITLA a special place to be because the ITLA is an association where there is room for everyone.
Miniature and micro miniature cattle have exploded in popularity over the past decade. A simple internet search will lead you to a plethora of sites offering multiple breeds of purebred and composite small stature for sale. Not to be left out, the longhorn has also “downsized” to meet demand. But what does a good mini longhorn look like? Well, the simple answer is “it looks like a standard longhorn, only smaller”. The miniature standard calls for females to be under 45”, bulls to be under 48” and steers to be under 50” at the hip at maturity. Other than the height these animals should have the same conformational traits that we look for in our standard cattle. Specifically, we are looking for cattle that do not show evidence of other miniature breeds or dwarfism. Unfortunately, when single trait selection is used sometimes the undesirable genes get concentrated along with the good. When evaluating cattle for evidence of dwarfism you should start at the face. Mini longhorns should have a proportionate face with no evidence of a dish or a roman nose. They should be generally rectangular in shape without heavy brows or an upturned nose. Abnormally short noses (with or without a dish) or abnormally wide foreheads (with or without a bulging profile) should not be selected. Moving on, the legs should be proportional to the body. Abnormally short legs or legs that appear too short for the depth of rib are evidence of dwarfism and should not be selected. The legs should also be straight with no evidence of a bow and should not toe out.
There are several breeds of horned miniature cattle that fall into the “micro mini” category. These cattle usually have evidence of dwarfism or a very distinctive head shape. The miniature zebu association specifically refers to this head shape as a “coffin shaped” head. These animals will have a narrow poll, a wide forehead and a narrow muzzle. Thus, giving the appearance of an old time coffin. While desirable in other breeds of miniature cattle, it should not be selected in miniature longhorn cattle. But now that you know what a good mini looks like, what can you do with a mini? Well, anything you can do with a standard! (Except maybe make a riding steer…..) There is a market for these small statured cattle as not only backyard pets, but also as bucking stock as well as beef and even as oxen to pull tiny wagons. Mini cattle are less intimidating to younger showmen just getting into the show circuit, and they don’t outgrow those younger showmen as quickly as a standard does. You can also pack more of them in a trailer to go to a show! Cultivating a market for miniature cattle in the breed also gives breeders another outlet for marketing cattle that may be perfectly correct, but just small. These smaller framed cattle (even if they aren’t quite small enough to be a mini) can be used as miniature breeding stock to continue breeding down more bloodlines to ensure viable genetic variation. Eventually, with enough genetic diversity, the mini longhorns will continue to push the frame score smaller and smaller until they are on par with some of the more popular miniature breeds (such as Mini Zebu, Dexter and Mini Hereford). Based on their continued popularity miniature cattle are here to stay, and the Longhorn once again has shown that it’s supreme adaptability has led it to a bright future in this new market!

Fly Control The last couple of months we talked about deworming and vaccines. This month I’d like to talk a little about fly control. There are multiple ways to tackle the fly problem and usually a combination of methods is the best bet for your cattle. This can be referred to as an integrated pest management program.
First and foremost is to understand the type of flies you are dealing with. Blood sucking flies include horn flies, stable flies, horse flies and deer flies. Non-blood feeding flies that can affect cattle include house flies, face flies and heel flies. Blood sucking flies will be more difficult to control, especially deer and horse flies. Traditional sprays and traps are usually ineffective for deer and horse flies. Management of all species starts with managing the environment. Ensure manure is removed appropriately and that compost piles are managed to minimize fly breeding grounds. Fly predators (a small wasp that parasitizes the fly larva) can be introduced around barns, loafing sheds and compost piles or manure bins to minimize fly populations. Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs) are a feed additive that can be found in mineral, feed or blocks that also inhibit the fly population by preventing the larvae from developing. Whatever method(s) you choose to use remember you will never eliminate 100% of flies.
Traps and sticky tapes are also effective for small spaces such as stalls and feed rooms. These products will need to be monitored and removed as they become full. Adult flies on cattle can be managed with pour-on or rub products, dustsor ear tags. Again, a combination usually works best. Depending on yourset up and the temperament of your cattle one or more products may work better than others. Rub and dust dispensers can be positioned around mineral feeders or water troughs to ensure use by cattle. Pour-on products and ear tags usually require handling facilities to ensure the safety of the cattle and humans while they are applied. There is also a paintball like product that can be used to administer a pour-on like liquid for cattle that will not use rubs and cannot be safely handled. Rub and dust dispensers need to be monitored so that they do not run dry. Pour-on products will need to be administered multiple times in a season and fly tags need to be applied and removed according to label directions to help limit resistance in the fly population. Finally there are pre-mixed ready to use sprays that can be used in a pump up sprayer or that come in a hand sprayer (such as those products marketed for horses). These products usually need to be applied several times a week. Whatever method(s) you choose to use remember you will never eliminate 100% of flies. Also, many of the species listed above have a home range of up to several miles. So, if you have a smaller place and your neighbors aren’t doing their part you may have a hard time getting a good handle on the fly situation. Don’t get frustrated! Keep doing your part and hopefully you can have a good conversation with your neighbor about options for fly control next season. Until next month, may your pastures be green and your calves be healthy!

We are Proud of our 2021 Graduates and from your ITLA Youth Directors, Officers and Board of Directors.
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams” -Eleanor Roosevelt
Bailey Mann will be attending Kansas Wesleyan University where she plans on majoring in Health and Physical Education. While furthering her education she will also be competing on the women’s track and soccer teams. With her major she plans on becoming a high school soccer coach so that she can share her passion and knowledge of the game with her student athletes.
Bre Abram’s future plans include attending the CSI Vet Tech program and graduating. Her dream job is to become a 4-H leader that has animals for kids to use. Many kids want to show animals, they just don’t have the right resources or in fact animals. She would also love to run a rescue out of her house and help animals find forever homes.
Libby Butterfield is going to College of the Mainland to work towards getting a degree in management. She is also working full time.
Sara Jennings will attend Texas A&M at College Station in the fall. Once she completes the rest of her general studies, she will major in Animal Science and minor in Ag leadership and development. She wants to work for or possibly own a breeders service for all species of livestock thats longhorn friendly. She wants to be doing semen collection, AI, ET, and cloning.
Taylor Conlon graduated a year early from Weatherford High School. She plans to continue her education at Weatherford College next year and then plans to transfer to Texas Tech or Tarleton to continue her studies. She plans on becoming a physical therapist.
Aleena Elliott will be getting her Associates degree before pursuing a career in Agricultural Business. For many years she had a set plan in life, however, after falling in love with longhorns she made the commitment to make agriculture a major part in her lifestyle.
Autumn Voss will be going to CSI for a little bit to get her Associates in Nursing, then go somewhere else to get her Bachelors to be a Registered Nurse. She wants to specialize in labor and delivery.
Shyanne Lee is going to CSI to be a Vet Technician and then going into U of I to pursue her dream to be a Veterinarian.
Adriana Norris’ future plans are to continue to show her cattle and teach younger children the responsibilities of showing and owning their own cattle. She’s also going to continue to work in a mechanic’s shop, working on diesel pickup and tri axles.
Ethan Burns just recently graduated from Graford High School. He has been showing Texas Longhorn cattle for one year so far and absolutely loves it! After high school he will be continuing his journey in the military within the Army National Guard branch. He will also continue to raise and show Texas Longhorn cattle.
Adalyn Hamilton was your ITLA Queen for 2019-2020. She is 17 years old and a Senior this school year through her homeschool program. She has been showing and raising Longhorn cattle throughout ITLA. After high school she plans to attend Tarleton State University to pursue her dream of being a nurse, as well as continuing to raise and show Texas Longhorn cattle.
Hunter Wilhite graduates from Hico High School in Hico, Texas. He plans to work for Lonestar Pipeline.
Hailey Mann and her family have been involved with Texas Longhorns for almost 6 years. Her next steps after high-school are to attend Northern Oklahoma College to pursue an Associate's in Agri-Business. During her educational venture at NOC she will also be participating on the state and nationally esteemed Livestock Judging Team. After her years at NOC are over she plans to pursue either Ag-Education or further her education in Ag-Business with an addition of Animal Nutrition and/or Husbandry. While pursuing a broader education at NOC she plans to continue to build and develop her family’s cattle and aid in helping the youth of today be the leaders of tomorrow.

Introducing Ms. Tracy Blackwell Your New ITLA Member Services Representative!
Tracy who lives in Stephenville Texas comes to us with a degree in Agricultural Economics and Animal Science. She has spent several years as a Breeding Barn Intern mainly Equine as well as office assistant for The Veterinarians Outlet. Her office skills and friendly customer service have already made her a hit!
Cattle branding still plays an important role in identifying an animal's owner in cattle ranching. The practice of branding is ancient. Some Egyptian tomb paintings at least 4,000 years old depict scenes of roundups and cattle branding, and biblical evidence suggests that Jacob the herdsman branded his stock. Fire or Freeze branding mark into the hide of an animal is the only method of marking that lasted the life of the animal. The practice of branding came to the New World with the Spaniards, who brought the first cattle to New Spain.
Every ITLA Member is expected to comply with the ITLA By-Laws on branding cattle for permanent identification purposes as updated in ARTICLE SIXTEEN REGISTRATIONS Registration Requirements for Non-Cloned animals. a. The sex of animal. b. The name of the animal. c. The date of birth (year, month and day). d. The individual fire or freeze brand ID number and its location on the animal. e. The holding ownership fire or freeze brand and its location on the animal. f. Color description in detail g. The name and registration number of sire. h. The name and registration number of dam. i. Signature of owner of sire. j. The name of the appropriate sire on service date of bred cow, for natural service only. A.I. service must attach A.I. Certificates. k. The name and address of breeder (owner of record of the dam at time of service). l. The ITLA will issue registration certificates on steers that are from a registered Texas Longhorn herd. The registration application shall state that it is a steer and will include the individual id number, holding brand, and detailed color description. m. Registration application shall be eligible for processing upon receipt of a completed application, containing proper signatures, and receipt of the appropriate fees.
To the ITLA Directors and Members, The BIG Event for June is the ITLA Educational Field Day. I am sure by the time this article comes out, it will be over, and I am so excited to participate in it. More on that event next month! Since my last note to ya’ll, I have my first partnership on a bull! I have several bulls I run with my personal cattle, as well as a longhorn bull my family uses on angus heifers, but I am so excited to announce that I have partnered with Silver T Longhorns, also of Winnsboro, on a bull out of one of my favorite sires, Heartbreaker! I have loved that bull since the first time I saw him a few years ago. I named our bull, Silver Crush’n Hearts AKA “Crush” and can’t wait to see how he turns out. The disposition of this calf is amazing, and he is already fast becoming a Circle B Longhorns favorite. Picture included! May was pretty exciting for me. I won a steer through the TLBGCA last year, and was able to complete all the requirements to keep him at the show in Brenham last month. The exciting part of this was that the steer ended up winning his class. The week before the show, he had some excitement when he got loose at my house and took off back to the barn I keep him at. It is about a mile and a half down the road! There is never a dull moment around here. Luckily, he was a very good steer at the show and brought home a blue ribbon and a trophy mug for winning his class! Our first show together was last year at the ITLA Championship Show in Glen Rose! I hope the breeders that donate steers to youth know how much having these great experiences mean to us. So thankful! When I wrote my article last month, I thought that we would be baling hay by now. We are not. Like many ranchers, we are knee deep in water and sinking in the mud under that. Maybe we will dry out enough to start getting some hay up, soon. I am ready! I am also still working at the Vet Clinic in the next town over and I am learning more every day. I love being a part of turning the scared and sad faces of our clients into smiling, happy faces when we can help their animals become happy and healthy again. That is what it is all about. Closing with a happy note, I have officially finished my 10th grade year of school and am officially considering myself a JUNIOR! Yay!
Thank you all for being so great when I get to meet you and I look forward to seeing you all down the road!

Hello! We are Jesús Fragoso and Josep Roma from “Excentric Farm”, based in Catalonia (Spain). Our history begins in 2019, when we were thinking to start a new business by our own. Due to our love for animals and country life, all our ideas went into creating a different farm from the rest that we knew, based in “excentric” fundamentals that the conventional-industrial farming don’t consider. At the end of that year, we attended to a regenerative agriculture seminar carried out by Joel Salatin (from Polyface Farm, USA) and Darren O Doherty (from Regrarians, Australia), who opened our minds to a new world full of possibilities for us. In 2020, we read a lot about regenerative agriculture, holistic management, permaculture and a large etc. but we were undecided when, with, how to start. Finally, Covid-19 arrived and you know, when a crisis comes it is time to think! Despite the pandemic, we decided to start our little farm project. We had a 15-acre piece of land from our family, so animals became the first and most important to think about to utilize our land. First, we thought that cows were the best animals to start because they do a lot of work in soil regeneration but there are many breeds where we can choose! Then, we started a list of the breeds we liked most considering a lot of things: breeding, resistance, temperament, easy to work with… and then we found Texas Longhorns.
We started to read about them, and each thing was going better and better, until we became Texas Longhorn lovers! Furthermore, we got the historical fact that the breed started from a crossbreed with a Spanish one, so we were bringing Texas Longhorn back to its origins. After that search, we had to find a farm here in Europe where we can acquire our first animals (European breeders must know that is not easy as it sounds). We were looking for a breeder that could sell us 4 heifers and one bull from the same farm in order to get transport costs down. Finally, we found Micha and Elisabeth Hamersky from Austria (Texas Longhorn Austria), who helped us a lot to get started on the breed. Now, we have our little herd going out on different pasture paddocks each day and growing at their rhythm. We wish that we can grow gradually the herd and add some different animals to our farm/ecosystem like laying hens or alpacas! Thanks to ITLA for letting us tell our story and hope we can participate in Texas Longhorn breeding improvement and preservation! Follow us on our Instagram account: @excentric_farm
