President COVID-19 continues to affect the cattle industry. Due to health issues of staff, and the slowing down of production lines to meet social distancing policies, commercial beef processing is taking a hit. To close out April, cattle slaughter is down 32% from its highest point in March. After 20 major beef processing facilities recently closed their doors, last week President Trump declared meat packing facilities critical to the nations infrastructure. Projections predict meat prices will soon rise. While the registered breeder may not feel a close tie to what the commercial beef industry is experiencing, COVID-19 has taken a toll on the Longhorn industry also by the postponing or cancellation of sales, shows, futurities, affiliate events, etc. The ITLA has safely remained at full operating capacity in providing timely member services and came through April very well. Specials will remain in place to assist breeders during this time, and we are happy to report that 2020 April customer activity came in above April 2019, without the benefit of sales and shows. While the commercial industry takes its hits, Heatherly and I feel blessed to live with our Longhorns and the much needed break they provide from these times. While as an industry we are not able to attend events and see others during this time of sheltering and social distancing, spending extra time with Longhorns is an opportunity to take advantage of special time that most will never experience.

April was a record setting month for the ITLA. The registrations and transfers have been pouring in to the office. The $15 special rate was put in to place to assist our members during these difficult times that we are all going through right now. Thank you to every member that took advantage of the April special to help get your registrations and transfers current. I am also very pleased to say that the ITLA remained “business as usual” through these challenging times and continued serving our members functioning at 100% this month. I am pleased to announce that the $15 rate on all transfers and registrations has been extended through May 31st to further assist our members as we all try to get back to some sort of normal “day to day”. Also, dual registrations are only $10 year round.

Texoma Spring Classic New Dates
May 22nd - 23rd Overbrook, OK
YATES FAMILY YATES cattle were bred during the lifetime of Cap Yates who passed away in the late sixties. Most of the original stock were dispersed by his family just after his death. The Yates herd was about 1500 head of rugged cows in the Big Bend area of West Texas, near Alpine. Mr. Yates felt that no breed of cattle offered the rancher what Texas Longhorns did in that harsh area of near desert. He did, in my opinion, a great job of preventing outside blood from entering his program. He honestly felt any other blood was inferior to a small Spanish type rugged Longhorn. The Yates cows have every quality needed to produce calves in the desert. They are structurally sound and good mothers. They are a true result of survival of the fittest. The old Yates cattle as a group probably weren’t impressive. Many were the smallest horned and most solid colored of the seven families. Today we see some beautiful colored Yates cattle which were not a normal thing years ago. Yates cattle lovers have selectively bred for the families with the most color and there are some over 50” horned Yates cows. These are often very twisted as they get old. Some Yates cows are very “long headed”, “sway backed”, and have high tail sets. Of all the seven, they represent the old traditional, coarse, small and rangy type. There were a few truly magnificent Yates cows for horn. These few 50” cows in number probably were one in hundreds among Yates cows. The normal Yates cow has a small circumference and short horn tip to tip. As to Yates bulls, I have never understood how to mate them. Many Yates bulls have been used but I’ve never seen one with truly long horns. Why aren’t there some Yates bulls with 50” horns like Yates cows? I have no answer for that one. Most of the Yates bulls’ horns average under 36” with a very few over that. Some well known Yates bulls possess less than 30” horn tip to tip. The big horn cattle of Yates blood are revealed as steers, and some are very competitive in shows in their old age. Cap Yates liked the WR cattle and over the years traded bulls with WR several times. Elmer Parker, at WR, felt the Yates blood did a lot to help the WR program. * This information is available from the ITLA webiste at www.itla.com

Brood Cow - Special Edition What Is A Brood Cow ? DEFINITION: A brood cow by definition is a mature female bovine that has been kept in a herd for her proven ability to out produce herself with outstanding progeny. She should have correct conformation, excellent milk production, superior genetics, and quality offspring. The goal in any cattle operation is to have your brood cows produce replacement heifers and bulls to become your future sires and dams as your producers begin to age out.
TRAITS: Texas Longhorn brood cows have other traits that set them apart from other beef breeds. They are able to survive in harsher environments without a phenomenal amount added production expenses some other breeds require. These iconic cattle may be hardy, but still require the proper nutrition to maintain not only their own body condition, but also support the calves that they are raising. A brood cow should have a fault free udder that produces the proper amount of milk for a Texas Longhorn calf, as well as the ability to calve with ease. She should be able to raise multiple calves year after year that continue to be of higher quality than her. Not one person will have the same opinion on what makes a “great” brood cow, but the basics of what make a Texas Longhorn brood cow worth keeping in production is pretty simple. She is the center of your breeding program, your hope for the future, and your mechanism for improving your herd genetics.
PRODUCTIVITY: Texas Longhorns are known for their ability to produce for 20+ years which is almost double the years that other beef breeds are able to reproduce for. If a female is sound, structural correct with proper conformation, good milk production, and has that natural mothering ability, she will be able to produce with less calving issues for a longer period of time than other cows. Body condition and proper nutrition play a big role in a quality brood cow, just as much if not more so than the genetics that she was created from. If a brood cow is a quality producer then it opens up the marketability of her offspring which in return brings higher revenue for her calves. If you select properly for the traits that make a great brood cow and cull the ones that don’t quite measure up, that’s the first step toward improving your herd. If you breed an “outstanding” bull to an “outstanding” cow you get a high quality calf. If you keep breeding mediocre bulls to mediocre cows, then you will continue breeding low quality and unmarketable calves.
THE TOTAL PACKAGE: A great brood cow should have all of the traits listed above, but an incredible brood cow should be the “Total Package”! Correct conformation, structural sound, excellent mothering ability, good milk production, put produces herself with every calf year after year, holds her body condition well in harsh environments, as well as great horn size-shape-length, flashy color, good disposition, and an all-around wow cow. The great thing about Texas Longhorns is the fact that each one is unique in their own way. Color patterns, numerous colors, horn shape, and personalities of each one are all different. The main thing is to not select for a “single trait” over and over. Select and breed for the “Total Package”. You can improve genetics and strengthen structures without breeding out all the true Texas Longhorn characteristics that make this breed so special. Change for improvements is ok as long you don’t breed out what makes these cattle so hardy, iconic, and historic. You can preserve the breed while improving for the future, just don’t get caught up in one trait over the other and sacrifice the overall animal.
ITLA MEMBER BROOD COW SUBMISSIONS: The ITLA had a great response to the brood cow edition from our membership. Not everyone has the same opinions or views on what makes a quality brood cow, so there are multiple submissions to showcase the many unique traits that each producer looks for in their own herd.
MyWin DOB: 12/6/2009 Sire - Win Win Dam - Vale Tanta * Owner Micha Hamersky, Texas Longhorn Austria, Poeggstall, Austria * All her calfs show very good results here in Europe * She is a gentle cow that is very easy to handle, with a calf at side she is protective toward others, but lets me get to it, which I like, she is a very good mother cow. * Breeding results should be validated by looking at the offspring and not just the pedigree. A 60” cow that produces 70” calves is sure better than a 70” cow that produces 60” calves, right? * What I look for in a brood cow and why- Good milker, protective, gentle, one calf every year, and one that could be overseen in the herd because she never shows problems/drama Micha Hamersky | Laas 10/2 | 3650 Pöggstall | AUSTRIA Web: www.texaslonghorn.at | Mail: contact@texaslonghorn.at

Desired Traits - Possesses all the maternal traits necessary for the brood cow ..fertility, milking ability , power , good feet , docile, color , horn with character, pedigree , prepotency , and likes being around you. Quote - The Little Cow That CUD ... If its not a LONGHORN, its just a Cow .. What to look for in a BROOD Cow - What they put on the ground Year after Year ... The “True Brood Cow” has PREPOTENCY: the ability to reproduce or better herself every time she calves no matter the service sire . If the “Cash” Cow can’t do this, she is just an addition to the trophy steer pasture -something pretty to look at -Thank you to the ITLA for showcasing the Brood Cow -the foundation to our longhorn herd ... JH Royalties DOB: 8/12/2007 Sire: Crown Royal 007 Dam: Delta Heart-Throb * Jonathan & Kristina Bentz - Timber Ridge Longhorns - Heyworth, IL. Awards: 2018 Midwest halter & non-halter show - Reserve Overall Female Champion Senior Cow 1st in Class 17 Senior Cow 2018 Ohio Valley Texas Longhorn Show - Reserve Senior Cow 1st in Class 17 Senior Cow She has given us two heifers and a bull calf since we’ve owned her in 2017 TR Queen’s Gun 2018 (by Beretta 531) heifer TR Remembrance 2017 (by TUFF’S RUFF ‘N ROWDY) heifer
We can become blinded by sale prices of big horned animals, but I still like to go back to the basics of what a good cow should be. When shopping for my first TL cow I was impressed by a heifer for sale, but unfortunately out of my price range. I was doing some study on her pedigree and I clicked on her dam: JH Royalties. I saw she was consigned to an upcoming sale. Looking past her flashy color and nice set of horns, her broodiness is what stood out to me. Great size and frame, good photo of her udder and teat size, nice depth of body to carry her calf, and good conformation that told me even though she was 10 years old she still has years of staying sound enough to still breed. Plus I liked the way her offspring stood out to me. I also contacted Rhonda Poe, her owner at the time, to find out her disposition. We are very hands on with our cattle and have no time for difficult animals. She’s not the type of cow you can go up and pet over, but easy to work in the pasture and pens which is safe in my handbook. Once owning her, we noticed she is on a “Texas” breeding program where she would calf in November, not the best time for Illinois weather. In negative degree weather, this senior cow is able to keep a good BCS, milk a happy fat calf, and was able to breed back on her first heat with our bull, Beretta 531 while only being with him for 5 days! JH Royalties exceeded what I was looking for in my first Texas Longhorn cow to use to help bring our herd into something special.
So what I look for in a Brood Cow: -Depth and Volume in the cows body to carry a calf -Good confirmation to stay sound for many years of successful breeding -Great milking ability to raise a strong healthy calves in extreme weather. -Breed back capability ensures positive pregnancy tests, higher birth/weaning weights, and passing on good fertility rates to her heifers.
Texas Longhorn Traits: -Calving ease: “Texas Longhorn Owners Pull Trailers, Not Calves.” -Good Disposition: Not only are momma cows dangerous, but we have to manage ones with long horns. - I like Total Horn. Looking at sales, you get a consistent sale price with total horn, no matter what shape they are. -Color. It sells, pretty to look at, and catches non-Texas Longhorn owner’s eye and gravitate towards your herd to learn more.

DOB: 7/8/2014 Sire: Exemplar Dam: SLR Camilla B * Owner - Shayne Pemberton - The Rockin P - Godley, Tx. * Awards: Reserve Grand Champion Houston Livestock Show * Attributes: Very even disposition, easily handled. Protective mother with large udder
Progeny - King Chex DOB: 5/14/2018 What I look for in a brood cow: I look for a cow large enough to calve without complications, good and calm disposition, straight back, feminine features with a clean underside. To me this cow has all of that with a beautiful color as a bonus. This cow has allowed me to handle her calves without being too overly protective. It is a nice change from one of my previous cows that broke three of my ribs for handling her calf. She ended up filling my freezer up nicely. Disposition is just as important as comformation.
Red’s Hot Bar DOB: 12/27/2015 Sire: RR Escondido Red 260 Dam: Mo-Reflec Bar
* Peyton Huber - Bentoak Ranch - Ledbetter, Tx. She just had her second calf, the first was a bull calf that measured 39” at 12 months, her second calf is a super heifer out of our great RR Sweet Brindle Dust, My imagination is running wild on what to expect. She is the sixth generation to be born and raised on Bentoak Ranch. She is one of the Super Bar family of cows in our breeding program. She is projected to go into the over 90” club, super gentle, and a joy to have in our pasture.
Rodeo Bliss DOB: 5/27/2015 Sire: Rodeo Max ST Dam: Win W Bliss * Owner - Debbie Barkley - Westin Ranch - Pilot Point, Tx. Offspring: 2019 heifer, Non-Stop Bliss Rodeo Bliss is beautiful TL cow with good conformation, nice horn shape and length, good thickness, body color and temperment and throws big fat calves. Dickinson Cattle Company is a good place for newcomers to buy their first Texas Longhorns.A brood cow with good conformation, nice horn shape and length, good color and temperment and throws big fat calves can produce more marketable offspring - show calves and breeding stock.
Iron Symbol SS DOB: 6/13/2010 Sire: Drag Iron Dam: Awesome Symbol * Owner - Mike & Linda Metcalfe - Boone, Co. * Iron Symbol SS is what we look for in our brood cows. Somethingroyal DOB: 4/24/2004 Sire: Rebel Red 01/9 Dam: Reata Royale * Owner & Breeder - Neal & DeeDee Strauss Premier Longhorns LLC Stillwater, Ok. * Award - ITLA Championship Show Produce Of Dam class winner * Quote: Genetics keeps us all humble but great cows will always make us look good. Somethingroyal has paid for her barn, her upkeep & the fence she looks over. More importantly, her progeny are giving their owners a lifetime of happiness & joy of ownership.
Progeny of Somethingroyal An easy breeder, excellent mother & tremendous producer, Somethingroyal has produced 10 calves: 9 heifers & 1 bull baby, including 4 saddle broke cows & 92” TTT cow Premier Astoria. She is the grand matron at Premier Longhorns. We have 6 generations of this amazing cow family.
Somethingroyal exemplifies all that we require in a Brood Cow. Form to Function: Large framed, superior mind, excellent feet & legs, structural correctness, excellent milk bag, flawless conformation, lateral twisty horns and a stacked pedigree. She herself must be the product of great cows who have produced exceptional herd sires themselves. Somethingroyal is the product of World Champion Senator’s Cowgirl by Senator with championship Butler (Tabasco) breeding on top. The reason why we demand this elite level, total package brood cow is because “like begets like”. A cow can only reproduce that which she is from that which has come before her. Even in a tough market, the very best of anything will always be in demand.

ITLA Senior 2020 Spotlight Kassidy Schwarz Weatherford, Texas My name is Kassidy Schwarz and I am graduating from Weatherford High School. I have been showing Longhorns for two years. I will be attending Blinn College in the Fall to finish my prerequisite courses before applying to Veterinarian School. My career goal is to become a Large Animal Veterinarian specializing in Cattle Reproduction. My family and I are currently building our production herd. We are expecting five calves to hit the ground by the end of 2020 and early 2021. Once I have finished college and begin my career, I want to have my own herd alongside my parents, Clint & Tabitha Schwarz. I have most enjoyed meeting new people through showing Longhorns. One day these buckles and banner will tarnish and collect dust, but the friendships I have made will last a life time. The most important thing I have learned from the longhorn industry is that you can’t walk into this industry blindly. The longhorn industry is complex and unique beef industry that has a wide span of breeding opportunities that allows you to produce the type cattle you are proud of. Find someone to mentor you and then turn around and mentor the next new member because I wouldn’t be where I am today without my mentors. I have been a Weatherford FFA officer for the three years I was eligible. I received my Green Hand, Chapter, and Lone Star Degree in my FFA Career. I am currently on working on getting my All-American degree during my first year of College after High School Graduation. I also am a member of the National Technical Honor society I graduated from Weatherford College with an Associate’s Degree of Science in December of 2019. I am a member of numerous Texas Longhorn Association’s. I competed in the Gold Merit competition at the 2019 World show and receive 2nd place. I also completed in the livestock judging at the 2019 World show, receiving 3rd place. I was blessed to win Champion Senior Showman and Grand Champion All Age Youth Steer at the International Texas Longhorn Association Championship Show.

ITLA Senior 2020 Spotlight Kyndall Keaton Mansfield, Texas My name is Kyndall Keaton, I am graduating from is Mansfield Lake Ridge High School. My hometown and state is Mansfield, Texas. I have been exhibiting Longhorns for about 3 and ½ years now. The college I will be attending in the fall is Oklahoma State University. My future goals and career path is to major in Pre - Veterinary Animal Science and obtain my Bachelors then Doctoral Degree, then pursue a career in the agriculture industry, I would love to be an all animal veterinarian. I do have my own herd of Longhorns, I named my Longhorn Herd Squiggle K Ranch! What I have enjoyed the most about showing Longhorns would be all the memories and connections I was able to make with the amazing people in the Longhorn Industry. My parents’ names are Erica Keaton and Frederick Jones. The most important thing I’ve learned from being involved in the Longhorn industry is that everyone can’t and won’t be a winner, but we did try very best. In my eyes every one is a winner at the end of the day, because everyone in the Longhorn community are the absolute most supportive and caring people! The atmosphere at shows are always very light and everyone is not super competitive. Awards: Grand Champion Youth Sr. Heifer and Jr. Steer at Longhorn Posse, 3rd Place in Showmanship at Louisiana State Fair, 2nd Place Junior Bull at Louisiana State Fair, Reserve Grand Champion Himalayan, FFA Beef Production Proficiency Awards, Mansfield FFA Treasurer, 3rd Place District 7 (Area 5) LDE - Senior Chapter Conducting, 3rd Place District 7 (Area 5) LDE - Senior Quiz, 4th Place Weatherford Invitational LDE, National Collegiate Livestock Coaches Association Principles of Livestock Selection & Evaluation Certification, Veterinary Medicine Certification, OSHA 1 0-Hour General Industry Agriculture Certification, Advanced Animal Fundamentals Certification, Advanced Animal Meat Evaluation Certification, and Floral Design Certification just to name a few.
