Letter from the PRESIDENT The annual Convention and Championship Show celebrating the ITLA’s 30th Anniversary was a huge success in all ways. The ITLA saw record numbers in exhibitors, cattle entries, and profit which goes directly to funding your ITLA. During the calendar year from October 2019 - October 2020, the ITLA continued to grow and prosper during a time when financial hardships hit many from the pandemic. The 30 year core strength of the ITLA shined bright to be able to prosper in an economically challenged year when many events were cancelled. The ITLA Board is dedicated in putting good policy in place and the staff works hard so that the ITLA is ready during good times and bad. The fact that the ITLA just wrapped up a very successful year in down times bodes very well for the ITLA’s future. No doubt we all are ready for better times, but it is good to know that the ITLA has withstood the test of time and is more than ready for whatever comes our way.

ITLA s First 30 Years By Stan Searle When Charles Schreiner III, owner of the YO Ranch, organized the first Texas Longhorn breed registry in 1964 his purpose was to preserve and protect the historic bloodlines. He had a second objective—shared by fellow Texans Graves Peeler, Wilbur Collins, Jack Phillips, Emil Marks, “Cap” Yates, Milby Butler, J. W. Isaacs, “Chico” Wright, Harry Pon of Oregon and Oklahoman Elvin Blevins. They were determined to build value into ownership of the native Texas cattle— by documenting bloodlines, recording pedigrees and publicizing both the heritage and economic traits of the breed. Charlie III (or “Three” as most of us knew him) could not have predicted the success of his efforts—or the potential for controversy that would come with the growing popularity of the Texas Longhorn breed. Twenty-five years after establishment of a registry, the Longhorn industry found itself fraught with unintended consequences. Value of the cattle had more than quadrupled and competition for leadership positions gave rise to the amassing of personal voting blocks. (Some individuals purchased dozens of voting memberships.) Charlie III never anticipated such a problem, nor did the founders make provision for membership that would expand across the continent and into Canada. Association elections required attendance at meetings in order to vote—resulting in an unintended disadvantage to Longhorn producers who might have to travel a thousand miles or more. These points of contention, along with a perceived lack of breed promotion, gave
Darol Dickinson (l.) accepting Pioneer Breeder Award from president Larry P. Smith II at rst ITLA show held in Glen Rose.
The rst two honorees to receive the ITLA’s Charles Goodnight Award were Bill Anthony (l.) and Jerry Williams. Other recipients were Stan Searle, Gary Bruch and Darol Dickinson. rise to a series of meetings held in 1989 with the goal of either achieving certain reforms in governance or—as a last resort—forming a new registry. After failing to persuade the registry’s Board to adopt mail-in voting and pledge to step up breed advertising, a few dozen breeders from across the country spearheaded the creation and incorporation of the International Texas Longhorn Association. This was preceded by an exploratory meeting in Colorado Springs, Colorado followed by a survey of the membership to gauge the degree of interest in an alternate registry. The results showed overwhelming support for the idea. An organizational membership meeting of ITLA was held on March 9, 1990 in Austin. Within a day or two, Jerry Williams and I filed the Articles of Incorporation with the State of Texas. Within days, hundreds of memberships and thousands of “duplicate registration” applications poured in. Initially, one paid staff person and two or three volunteers dealt with the paperwork, officed in space donated by Donnie and Jerry Williams in Austin. He served as the interim Managing Director until the first election. A Steering Committee was comprised of Bill Anthony of Ardmore, OK; Pat Holt of Lolo, MT; Stan Searle of Monument, CO; J.T. “Happy” Shahan of Brackettville, TX and Jerry Williams. Responsibilities included creation of bylaws, determining voting regions, placement of advertising, and dealing with finances. In October, 1990, at the first annual membership meeting, Bill Anthony was elected president and Jerry Williams was named vice president. Elected to the board of directors were:
Bunny Anderson, Prescott, AZ; Melvin Burrows, Lebanon, OR; Frank Doherty, Fort Scott, KS; Andy Edgerton, Manchaca, TX; Tom Hogan, Atkinson, NE; Pat Holt, Lolo, MT; Bruce Hundley, Versailles, KY; Jim Hutchinson, Reston, VA; Frank Rust, Stafford, TX; Curtis Saxton, Meridian, MS; Stan Searle and Happy Shahan. From the outset, individuals from across the continent, including Canada, got involved in helping put ITLA on solid footing. Thousands of dollars came in for prepaid registration fees and donations. Benefit auctions, beginning with the first annual convention in 1990, generated more than $250,000 during the early years. Strong grassroots support gave ITLA its jump-start, with representatives of regional associations and individual members contributing time, cash and ideas. The early grassroots strength of the Association was epitomized by Dick and Donna Rapp of Washington State, who attended every ITLA convention, driving 3,900 miles round-trip! Joe Valentine, the third president of the Association, with his wife Lorinda, drove and flew countless thousands of miles in support of startup affiliates and various Longhorn functions, always on their own nickel. Others who worked to bring in members, generate funds and encourage the youth included Gary and Brenda Bruch, the late Tim and Mary Sue Cline, Darol and Linda Dickinson, Ben and Ann Gravett, J.B. Hunn, Jim Hutchinson, Stan and Lorna Searle, Jerry and Donnie Williams, and Mickey and Marilyn Wood. Literally hundreds of others helped at every level, without caring who—if anyone--got the credit.
Founding members Linda Dickinson (l.) and Lorna Searle at 2008 dedication of ITLA headquarters building in Glen Rose, Texas. One of the early successes of ITLA was the first International Championship Texas Longhorn Show, which was held in Austin in conjunction with the 1990 Convention. It was the first Texas Longhorn show to benefit from judges who had been qualified for the industry’s newly established Approved Judges List. The idea had been discussed for years—but it was the new association that finally made it happen. (Thirty years later, it is still the only system for identifying qualified judges—many of whom officiate at shows hosted by both Longhorn associations.) Qualifying of individuals through judging clinics, apprentice judging and peer review would be required and the Approved List, it was agreed, would be reviewed annually by the Board of Directors. Mindful of the sometimes embarrassing disparity between market values and judges’ placements, the ITLA founding Board established the requirement that ”approved” judges must have actually raised registered Texas Longhorn cattle. The benefit of this judging philosophy, to the membership and the breed generally, is that winners of ITLA approved shows are usually cattle that will also command top prices. This consistency eliminates much of the confusion and discouragement that a new breeder can experience when he sees a Grand Champion bull selling by the pound! And, of course, ITLA approved judges are not likely to award a blue ribbon to an overfed heifer or short-horned bull just because they’re the tallest or fattest in their class. Following its humble beginning in donated space in Austin, the ITLA office was relocated to Ardmore, Okla. In 1992 and Bill Anthony accepted the part time position of Executive Director. As a past president of both TLBAA and ITLA, his experience and reputation contributed to the expansion of membership services. The next step involved the relocation to new quarters in Fort Worth, Texas. In 2001, an effort was begun to generate a building fund, under the leadership of past president Darol Dickinson, in anticipation of either buying the building in which ITLA was leasing space or
constructing a building. By 2005, under the administration of President John Hodges, a search for a suitable building site was underway. That headquarters building project was given a tremendous boost when well-known Glen Rose, TX entrepreneur and former Longhorn rancher Larry P. Smith stepped up to offer the Association the gift of a choice building site overlooking the attractive community southwest of Fort Worth. Design and construction were soon underway--aided by discounts and outright gifts from President Hodges, Stan and Sandi Tidwell and several others. Completed in 2007, the building was dedicated in 2008. Within four years, gifts from members, capped off with a generous matching offer by the Best of Trails Texas Longhorn Association, had the building fully paid for. Today, ITLA remains one of the few cattle associations and the only Texas Longhorn registry to own its headquarters building. Throughout its history, the ITLA has emphasized neighborliness, common interest in a great breed of cattle, and putting kindness and friendship above “cow politics.” For ITLA, at 30 years of age, the vision shared by the founding members and present leadership remains unchanged--providing member-friendly service while striving to improve the profitability of every Longhorn producer. Of course, a fundamental function of the Association is registering and transferring cattle—which is done with utmost efficiency. The iRegister service permits members to submit data online—which further speeds the process. And, reflecting the biggest reason for
creating ITLA, these benefits are all delivered through an entity in which members get to vote for every officer as well as their directors. It’s all part of being “Member-friendly.” Texas Longhorn producers are expressing their approval by joining the Association in record numbers. At the 30th Anniversary Convention in Glen Rose, president Larry P. Smith II noted that the current active membership number of 1,668 reflects a growth of 18 percent during the past 12 months. The membership rolls have grown by an impressive 35 percent over a 24 month period. It’s highly encouraging to see this dynamic response--with our 30th year rivalling the dynamic growth of our very first year. It’s proof that “Member-friendly” is more than just a slogan. It’s truly what ITLA is all about! Author: Stan Searle served as the second president of ITLA, as well as terms as director, treasurer and vice president. He was instrumental in formation of the Mountain States Texas Longhorn Association, the Northwest Texas Longhorn Association and served as president of the Texas Longhorn Heritage Foundation. He and his family have raised Texas Longhorns in Colorado for the past 46 years. Their annual cattle drives through the streets of Denver have generated national publicity for the breed.
