ITLA Member,

For over 33 years the ITLA has strived to operate as a member-oriented association where every member is valued and has a voice. Unfortunately, during the recent ITLA Election for Board of Director positions, some members did not receive ballots and some votes were not received by the independent accounting firm due to software and internet issues. Therefore, the ITLA has decided that another election is necessary to assure that the election is conducted in a fair and honest format. The ITLA apologizes to anyone who may have been inconvenienced, especially candidates, but the ITLA feels this process is necessary to insure every member has the opportunity to vote and that the election results may be relied upon as representative of the members’ desires. New election details will be forthcoming very soon.

A LETTER

240-291-1958

Dear members and friends,

When this issue comes to you, the convention will be happening in Duncan. I have been happy to see all the exciting things being promoted. There is something for everyone! Here in the east, we have a big, excited group of members and youth who will be attending.

With the convention comes the unofficial end of the year. Sometimes this is the turning point for change within ITLA and the upcoming season. I am very excited to be turning over the seat of vice president to Mr. Brad Westmoreland. Brad has been an absolute pleasure to work with and he brings so much positivity to our board. In addition to serving as parliamentarian, he has been very active in getting issues sorted out and moving forward for the industry. Please give him a warm welcome when you see him. I also wish President Freeman a great upcoming term as our leader.

I will continue to be involved on a local and national level supporting our registry any way I can. Please reach out if I can be of help to you.

I hope we have a cohesive and successful new board. It has been one of my greatest honors to serve.

Rachael Martin

2023 ITLA Queen

Hey y ’all my name is Rachael Martin I am the 2023 Miss ITLA Queen I am a senior in high school from North Carolina and a member of NETLA & ITLA. I love Jesus, family, animals, & kids. I have had the best time representing the ITLA this year and I’m looking forward to all the new experiences yet to come. It has been wonderful to teach others about Texas Longhorns and agriculture while meeting so many new people along this journey. Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to represent the breed we love through this special position.

WHAT'S NEW

Hey Y’all! This will be my last article as your 2023 Miss ITLA Queen, and I would like to start off by saying the Longhorn family welcomed me with open arms and helping hands and I want to thank all of you for being so supportive and helpful to me this year! I would not have made it this far without you. A huge thank you also to North Carolina Nash County Farm Bureau, NETLA, & the many people across the country who donated to our North Carolina - Texas Longhorn Show Team helping us to raise the funds to return to the 2023 Championship Show!

Being a part of the ITLA has changed my life in so many ways for the better. It changed my perspective on not only what I want to study in college but how I view myself. I now have a love and passion for leadership and public speaking that had not taken root in my life until I got the chance to become the ITLA Queen. Through this position, I have been able to develop in these areas by representing and educating the public about the Texas Longhorn Industry. I have not only been able to grow my love for these things, but the Lord has also used this Queen position to teach me how to be bold in the things I am passionate about, and I will forever be thankful to have been given the chance to represent ITLA in this way. Yesterday I even got the wonderful opportunity to introduce my brother to the cattle that I am showing. It was such a blessing getting my family to share in the fun. A special memory, the perfect ending to this year, providing another great moment to share something I am passionate about with the people I love.

This past year, I not only got to teach others, but I was able to learn a lot myself and I very much enjoyed being 2023 Miss ITLA Queen. I hope all the future Queens will feel the same way and I cannot wait to see who gets to receive this same opportunity as 2024 Miss ITLA Queen.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the 2023 Championship Show and Futurity this October in Duncan, Oklahoma and I am so excited to see all the new calves that are soon to come! Good luck to all and God bless!

God Bless,Rachael

He was preceding in death by his parents, Delbert and Jane Shores as well as a brother Rick Shores and is survived by his wife of 49 years, Paula Shores of Boerne, TX, and a sister Rebecca McClister of Alvarado TX. As well as his much loved dogs.

Carroll graduated president of his class from Charleston, Texas He developed early interest in livestock and was active in FFA After graduation, Carroll left for basic training in the USAF He served two tours in Vietnam (1965 -1967-68) Was in Siagon at Tan Son Nhut Air Base for the 68’ TET OFFENSIVE, went to Sydney, Australia shortly, then back to the states As a result of Agent Orange spray he was plagued during his whole life with health related issues. After leaving the military he went to the University of Texas in Austin and graduated with a degree in journalism. He went to work at a wholesale plumbing supply business in the early 70’s and became manager of it for many very successful years growing the business to the largest in the area.

During this period Carroll and Paula invested in the Texas Longhorn business quickly becoming competitive. Their entry, "Janet Archer" won $11,213 for first place in the first Texas Gold Futurity. They soon purchased more cows and the famous sire "King." As "King" became more known as the first bull weighing over a ton and measuring over 64" he is seen in pedigrees of famous sires Clear Point, Cut'n Dried, Flair Galore, Drop Box, Drag Iron, WT Kid Rock, Jungle Jim, Wheels Up, etc. CPS Longhorns was a founding member of ITLA #65.

When Carroll and Paula retired from the fast pace plumbing business their enjoyment was touring the nation, to every beautiful work of nature with their shiny silver Airstream home Coast to coast from camp ground to National Parks the smell of Carroll grilling steaks by the Airstream was normal as the evening sun set

Carroll and Paula fell in love with a beautiful area on top of an island mountain west of Seattle near Eastsound, WA. The cool yet tropical island was a Heaven on earth during 5 of their retirement years.

Carroll's home at the time of his failing health was Boerne, TX. His forever-wife Paula continues on to feed the pets and have great memories of love and adventure thinking of a great life time experience with --- Carroll Shores.
