Letter from the

President Paying it Back: The ITLA will be celebrating 30 years of doing it the right way at the upcoming Convention and Championship Show. The ITLA works hard to give members the best service in the industry with the lowest prices on every item. The staff prides itself on a one week turnaround but due to the nice growth that the ITLA has experienced, this timeline was getting difficult to meet. Additional staff is now in place to continue providing services the members have grown accustomed too. The cost of providing outstanding member services, and running an office, continues to expand with inflation but the ITLA has held the pricing steady on every item for many years. In the ITLA you are not bombarded throughout the year with solicitations for the funding of shows, scholarships, sales, contests, etc. The Convention and Championship Show is the only time when the ITLA asks members to give back. Many opportunities exist to support your Not For Profit 501(c)(5) ITLA such as donating a heifer to the Elite Sale, purchasing a heifer, sponsoring the show, donating to the silent auction, volunteering your time, etc. A lot of work has gone in to making this event the best ever, we definitely want everyone to fully enjoy this special Longhorn experience but please don’t forget that this is also the time to show your appreciation for the 30 years that the ITLA has given to the Longhorn industry.

Russell Freeman has been nominated for the ITLA At Large #2 Director. All ITLA members will receive a ballot in a few days for your voting decision. Every director and officer is of the utmost importance. It is good to know about all nominees, their experience, their leadership skills, dedication to the Texas Longhorn breed and success, or lack of it, in the business world.Freeman Ranch was founded in 1899 by Russell’s family members during a rough, wild and rugged period of the western frontier. Russell Freeman, now has expanded the spacious operation into 3 counties, is a Colorado businessman, rancher, and producer of breed-leading Longhorn cattle and Quarter Horses. He is a graduate of Colorado State University with a construction management degree. Russell was drawn to the excitement and value of Texas Longhorn cattle for Freeman Ranches. Texas Longhorn bulls were used on the family herd as early as 1977 to breed first calf heifers. He and his wife Jamie have developed a solid registered herd built on proven genetics. Embryo transfer, AI, and IVF breeding are moving the herd rapidly forward. The main herd sires are Mr. Happy, Dragon Slayer and Winning Honor, now over 93” T2T. Russell is actively putting together a set of seriously planned genetics that he hopes will make a significant impact on the Longhorn industry in a few years. On the female side of the Freeman herd the $50,000 Jest Dragging Iron and 98” T2T Pretty Lady can be seen gracing the ranch. Russell is a big supporter of rural education, the National Western Stock Show, the Ride for the Brand Ranch Rodeo, Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, and the Pikes Peak Range Riders. He previously served as President of the Braunvieh Association of America and the family actively campaigned Braunvieh show cattle. Ride for the Brand herds Russell’s Longhorns through downtown Colorado Springs every year, and received world wide TV coverage last August when a black Freeman cow escaped the drive and ran into a down-town bank lobby. Russell, his wife and three sons live on the high plains of Colorado remotely located east of Pikes Peak, north of the Arkansas River, and West of Bent’s Fort. Their headquarters, if not in no-mans-land, is probably just over the hill. Your vote for Russell Freeman will add new excitement and business expertise to the ITLA board. From Friends of Russell Freeman, your prompt completion of the ITLA ballot and dropping it in the mail is very important.

He is a big supporter of rural education, the National Western Stock Show, the Ride for the Brand Ranch Rodeo, Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, and the Colorado Range Riders. Ride for the Brand herds Russell’s Longhorns through downtown Colorado Springs every year, and he recently hosted a TLBAA Horn Showcase satellite measurement, where 11 bronzes were awarded.

Connie Ollive was raised in the North Central area of Texas and has been involved with horses and cattle all her life. She and her husband, Bruce, moved to Alberta, Canada where they worked on his family’s ranch and trained horses for ten years. After that time, they returned to Texas with their four children where they continued to break and train horses. It was during that time that Connie studied to become a registered nurse. As a nurse she has worked in several departments: obstetrics, labor and delivery, nursery, and emergency care. She is presently working as a clinical instructor for the Vocational Nursing Education program at Tyler. Junior College. It was 1995 when Connie and Bruce became involved with longhorn cattle. Bruce took a job working for Mickey Wood of Wildwood Ranch in Lindale, TX. Soon after, they purchased eight Longhorn cows of their own from local breeder Roberta Gard. They became even more involved with longhorns when Bruce became ranch manager of Bolen Longhorns. During those years they were able to breed and improve their small longhorn herd and attend longhorn activities around the country. They also became part of a small group of breeders to organize and promote the original Winchester Longhorn Heifer Futurity. From the start, Connie and Bruce have maintained a small purebred herd of longhorn cattle and felt fortunate to have accomplished so much with them throughout the years. Connie enjoys meeting and “talking cattle” with Longhorn People from around the world. But she especially enjoys showing Longhorn Cattle with several of her twelve grandchildren and traveling to shows and futurities with some of her friends.

Dr. June Cohron was born and raised in Stuarts Draft, Virginia and is the fourth generation of her family to live and produce agricultural products at Rosemont Manor. Dr. Cohron graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in 1988 with a degree in biology and received her doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1991 from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. She established the Animal Hospital of Stuarts Draft, Inc. in 1995 and practices small animal medicine and surgery on a full-time basis. The Cohron family has raised registered Angus cattle at Rosemont Manor since 1956 and June grew up showing Angus cattle, market steers, and Suffolk sheep in 4-H. She was a member of the county Livestock Judging and Junior Stockman’s teams for 4 years and was named a Virginia 4-H All Star in 1985. In 1992 June and her father Larry purchased their first registered Texas Longhorn cattle – some Yates based cattle from Victoria, Texas. She joined the ITLA and the Northeast Texas Longhorn Association in 1995 and started exhibiting cattle at local and regional shows and then at ITLA Championship Shows. At present June and Larry have 25 Texas Longhorns, 20 Angus-based commercial cattle, and 3 BueLingo cow/calf pairs. They use artificial insemination regularly to select for large framed, long horned cattle that grow and perform well. In addition to selling breeding animals and 4-H club calves they also sell Texas Longhorn beef and Berkshire pork at the regional farmer’s market. June has been an ITLA judge since 2002. In addition to breeding and showing cattle she also breeds and shows Sealyham terriers and wirehaired Dachshunds and has been privileged to exhibit at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show 6 times. When she isn’t working at the clinic or on the farm, she enjoys participating in dog agility competitions and singing in the church choir.

God, Longhorns, & Cowgirls The Palo Pinto Cowboy church in Santo, Texas had their grand opening church arena ceremony on August, 17th, 2020. The arena was a donation and had been a work in progress for months. With Covid-19 disrupting the construction of the facility, the completion of the arena was highly anticipated by the church. Upon completion the grand entry and ceremony wasn’t too far in thought. Those who attend the church (or those wanting to) were invited to participate in the grand entry on horseback. I asked the church if they would allow a Texas Longhorn steer to be presented in the grand entry into which they happily accepted the offer. When I told them I had a steer who could bow during prayer, they were all for it. My Mother (April), Father (Clyde), two sisters (Brianna & Mikayla) and my boyfriends Grandmother (Bridget) were all in attendance with me. My sister (Mikayla) and Bridget were both on horseback for the grand entry and my other family members were in the stands. After the ribbon cutting ceremony was finished, Sam was the first one welcomed to the new arena. Multiple peopled prayed over the church and the newly opened arena as well as for the people and animals in which attended. I brought my ‘bowing’ Texas Longhorn Steer, Shotgun Sam. Having Sam for almost 5 years has brought us very close. I taught him how to bow when he was 2 and now its just something we do for fun. After the first initial prayer, members of the church were asked to come to the arena floor to “put a knee in the dirt for Christ” everyone kneeled as well as Sam and me and we did a final prayer of thanks. After the ceremony, many gathered around to visit with Sam. Many people had never been so close to a Longhorn, they were simply amazed of his docility. One man even asked how long it had taken me to teach him. I explained just how smart this breed was and how it only took me a few hours to teach him and even after all these years of being a pasture pet he still remembers when I ask him. Many pictures were taken of Sam with the church members. It was an amazing opportunity and we were blessed to be able to worship the Lord in such a way. By: Alex Rodriguez ITLA Office Staff

Born and raised in Iowa on a beef and dairy farm and have been involved with the cattle industry all my life. Dr. Gene and I began raising Texas Longhorns in 1994. I always count it a privilege and honor when I am asked to evaluate Texas Longhorns in the show ring or in someone’s pasture. I always look for the traits that make up the “complete package” animal that will ensure its success in reproduction for the Texas Longhorn industry. These cattle are a unique beef breed with added value in their horns, color, and longevity. I want an individual to be structurally correct and balanced from front to back with the ability to move freely.

Championship Show Non-Halter Judge - Mike Tomey Thank you for the opportunity to be your judge at the 30th Anniversary ITLA Championship Show. Jamie & I have 6 children, 4 grandchildren and live in Bedford, IN. We raise registered Texas longhorns and corn, soybeans, and wheat. We have been raising longhorns for 29 years. We run about 150 pair and crop about 3,000 acres with help from our children, Matthew, Courtney, and Michael that work on the farm. I was the president of the International Texas Longhorn Association for 2 years. When we look at longhorns, we like conformation, body, horns, disposition, and color.

Lucretia Ann Bourrous 1955 - 2020 Funeral services for Lucretia A. Bourrous, 64, of Pollok will be held Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Mike Loftin officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery. Ms. Bourrous was born December 20, 1955 in Lufkin, Texas to Ella Mae (Gilbert) and G.P. Bourrous, and died Saturday, August 15, 2020 at her residence. Ms. Bourrous was a rancher and had owned and operated Indian Valley Ranch in Pollok for many years. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, daughter and sister whose family was most important to her, as well as her love of the Lord. She was of the Methodist faith. Lucretia started her Texas Longhorn cattle journey over thirty years ago while she was living in the Texas Hill Country. She would go on to build one of the country’s top show-winning herds. Genetics from her herd were highly sought after by top breeders. She was a true pioneer for women in the Longhorn breed industry not just because she was a woman, but because she did it on her own. It all started with a visit to a well-known Hill Country Longhorn Ranch in Comfort, Texas. While on that visit, she would see a young bull she was immediately drawn to - “there was just something special about him”. She would name him Checotah, and he would be the start of her Longhorn program. She also made a deal with the farm manager to board the bull there at the farm. She would drive out each morning after dropping the girls off at school and spend the morning grooming and training him for the show ring. They would also be back at the farm in the afternoon after school. Checotah would go on to win an unprecedented number of class wins and championship titles in the adult shows with Lucretia on the lead and in the youth shows with her daughter, Jerri, on the lead, and his most prestigious win was Champion Bull at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Lucretia would also end up training him to be ridden with a western saddle. He would later make a public appearance, with saddle, at The Hyatt Regency Hotel in Houston to be ridden around their grand ballroom for a Walmart regional convention. He was truly a special animal, one of a kind. Not long after acquiring her bull Checotah, she would purchase a beautiful black and white heifer from the same farm with the same boarding agreement. These two animals would go on to produce a number of outstanding offspring that would help her grow her breeding program. That black and white heifer was named Something Special 395 aka Baby Girl. She would not only go on to have a hugely successful show career but also an incredible production record of producing multiple show champions and high sellers. Not long after she acquired the foundation of her herd, she moved back to East Texas, and Indian Valley Ranch was established. She had a love for the Native American culture and history. She would purchase only a few more head for the foundation of her herd; the rest would be home grown with her herd reaching over 140 total head.

The brand that would go on the cattle was the 7B, which represented the family members. The 7B brand has been on more champion cattle than can be listed here. Lucretia showed her cattle at all the major stock shows and major Longhorn shows all across the country. She and her daughters, Nicole and Jerri, traveled many a mile going to shows and they usually had a few extra kids go; the more the better. She had a passion for the Longhorn breed and got great joy from sharing the breed with others, especially kids. The cattle were not so much a business for her but deep love. She wanted to keep them all and was never eager to sell her cattle. If you were lucky enough to purchase one, that was something special. She was a member of the International Texas Longhorn Association throughout her years of involvement with Texas Longhorn cattle. She was also a former Rodeo Queen of the Angelina Benefit Rodeo in the 1970’s. Survivors include her father, G.P. “Jerry” Bourrous of Pollok; daughters and son-in-law, Nicole and Britt Garcia of Pollok and Jerri Bourrous of Nacogdoches; granddaughters, Jade Garcia of Pollok and Jordan Garcia of Lufkin; sister, Deborah Casburn of Diboll; niece and husband, Bridget and Jason Tobias of Diboll; great-niece, Lucchesse Tobias of Diboll; and other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ella Mae Bourrous; brother-in-law, Ronnie Casburn; and her grandparents. Pallbearers will be Britt Garcia, Jason Tobias, Russell Hooks, Gilbert Garcia, Kade Thompson, and Jimmy Crum. Honorary pallbearers will be Omar Estrada, Paul Cochran, Ernie Brooks, Garland Brooks, and Bobby Hawkins. The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday morning prior to the services. Memories and condolences may be added, and live webcasting of the services may be viewed, at www.carrowayfuneralhome.com.
