Hope this finds you all in tall green grass. Southeastern Colorado has had one of the best summers on record and we feel truly blessed. I have seen some of you haven’t been as fortunate to catch the moisture and we pray that has turned around for you by the time this is posted.
Boy, where did the summer go? The big ITLA Conventional and Championship show is rapidly approaching. Get your entries in soon for any of the haltered, non-haltered, youth or futurity shows. Jeremy Johnson and his committee have put together a top of the line set of Longhorn Judges for each event so come prepared. Pam, in the Glen Rose office, is working diligently to make sure all the forms and paperwork are complete and organized for the event. Check out all the donated heifers that will be sold at the Championship show. Joel Dickinson has been bombarded with calls from top breeders who want to help contribute to the ITLA future by highlighting their best herd genetics. Mike Metcalfe and his team have also put together a knock up collection of bull semen lots for the Raffle. Several of these bulls are only being made available at this event. It will all be online for those of you that can’t make it to Oklahoma.
In other news, we are putting the final touches on an E-Commerce package that integrates with I-Register. This will allow you to complete your transaction with the ITLA without having to go to the mailbox or call the office with your credit card. From membership dues to registering calves or even ordering ITLA stuff, you can complete those all with a one time transaction.
See you in a few weeks in Duncan,
A LETTER FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT
What a busy month August has been! In the East, we had two shows that were lots of fun. Our youth did an excellent job with their cattle and everyone had great times. (York Fair & Montgomery Fair)
Coming up this month, we have our last two NETLA shows; Maryland State Fair and Fredrick County Fair. This gets us geared up for traveling to the Convention in Duncan, Oklahoma. As part of the ITLA Board, I’m hearings lots of great plans for the futurity shows, and youth events. There are great prizes being ordered for our exhibitors, and there is something for everyone! Duncan has a very nice facility and the town has a great western flair! With September, comes election time and there are strong candidates for the leadership of our association. Don’t forget to email your ballots!
See you soon in Duncan!
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NEW Mr. & Mrs. Fosheim JACOB and LIZZ
Public Relations in Texas Longhorn Cattle
Breeding and Direct Marketing in Europe
Written & Photos By: Micha Hamersky, Longhorn AustriaPublic relations play a pivotal role in the success of Texas Longhorn cattle breeding and direct marketing endeavors in Europe. Effective communication is not just about promoting the breed; it's about establishing connections, building trust, and spreading awareness about the unique qualities of Texas Longhorn cattle.
In the heart of Europe, nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Austria, the efforts to raise and promote Texas Longhorn cattle have taken centre stage for the Family Micha and Elisabeth Hamersky. The goal isn't just to produce top genetic breeding stock; it's also about educating and informing enthusiasts and customers about the exceptional attributes of these cattle.
As pioneers of Texas Longhorn cattle breeding in Austria, the journey involves more than just raising livestock for Micha and Elisabeth. It's about sharing a story that resonates with people— be it the rich history of the breed, the benefits of the meat, or the sustainable practices used in mob grazing systems By engaging with the public through various channels, from social media to local events, breeders can create a lasting impact.
Why is this emphasis on public relations so crucial? For starters, Texas Longhorn cattle are not just any breed. They represent a blend of history, resilience, and distinctive characteristics that need to be communicated effectively. From their iconic horns to their ability to thrive on pastures, each aspect needs to be highlighted to showcase the breed's value
Direct marketing, another key aspect, relies heavily on effective public relations. While the goal is to provide top-quality beef to consumers, it's also about establishing a connection between the meat and the story behind it. When customers know the journey from pasture to plate and understand the dedication of the breeders, a deeper level of appreciation develops.
Texas Longhorn cattle are renowned for producing some of the healthiest and leanest meat available. This makes them an attractive option for health-conscious consumers in Europe who are seeking high-quality and nutritious meat products. However, the true value of this meat may not be fully understood by the general public. This is where effective public relations come into play. This should include proper high quality pictures, proper printed material such as flyer, info cards, etc, presenting meat on public events such as fairs, BBQ-events, etc.
In a world where information travels quickly and impressions are formed in an instant, public relations help shape perceptions. Transparent communication about breeding practices, animal welfare, and the benefits of Texas Longhorn beef builds credibility and fosters trust. It also helps dispel misconceptions and myths that might surround the breed.
A big part in a successful marketing nowadays is networking. Successful companies used networks to get pushed. Friends know other friends, customers know other customers. With an unlimited offer on products on the market, Micha and Elisabeth have experienced that a customer who tells a friend is the most efficient way to get new customers.
In conclusion, the importance of public relations in Texas Longhorn cattle breeding and direct marketing in Europe cannot be overstated. It's not just about showcasing the breed; it's about building relationships, spreading awareness, and educating the public. By effectively communicating the essence of Texas Longhorn cattle and the dedication of breeders, a strong foundation is laid for the growth and recognition of this remarkable breed in the European market.

PROMOTING TEXAS LONGHORNS IN A NEW COUNTRY ISN'T ALWAYS EASY
Written & Photos By: Jesús Fragoso & Josep Roma, Catalonia, SpainHello!
We are Jesús Fragoso and Josep Roma from "Excentric Farm," based in Catalonia, Spain. Some of you may already know us through social media platforms like Instagram. In 2021, we embarked on a journey with Longhorns here in Spain, becoming the pioneering breeders to introduce this spectacular breed to our country, tracing it back to its origins. As many other first-time breeders in their respective countries can relate, starting with a new breed isn't always a straightforward endeavor.
To give you a glimpse into our farm situation, our government's limited understanding of farming reality and the consequent legislation have led to a rapidly aging population of farmers. The increasing paperwork and challenges that young farmers face when initiating new projects have contributed to this trend. Consequently, we find ourselves with an older generation of farmers possessing extensive expertise in our field but exhibiting some resistance to new concepts.
And here we are, a young couple breeding Texas Longhorns in a country that has traditionally focused on entirely different breeds for many years. Not an easy task, right?
Our journey began in 2021 with the acquisition of our first animals (4 cows and 1 bull) from Micha and Elisabeth Hamersky in Austria. While this might seem like a small-scale operation to many, given the aforementioned challenges, we must proceed cautiously, taking incremental steps to ensure a viable and prosperous project.
With these initial animals, we began to witness and experience the breed's advantages that we had read about. While it might sound rudimentary, witnessing the results firsthand is essential before believing in and promoting the breed to other breeders. Consequently, we started receiving inquiries and interest from other Spanish breeders. Some even visited our farm, experiencing the Texas Longhorn phenomenon firsthand.
Farmers who had never encountered Texas Longhorns were initially concerned about the length of their horns. However, these concerns gradually diminish when they witness how manageable and gentle these animals are to work with. A little secret of ours is that we handle our cattle daily, moving them through our DIY chute twice a day as it serves as the gateway to our barn. This routine facilitates working with them and simplifies the annual veterinary checks. Our vets have even mentioned that our herd is the easiest they've worked with, and we leverage this feedback for publicity. They share their positive experiences during their visits to other farms throughout the year.
Last year, the first 4 calves were born, and although we eventually sold them to a farmer from another European country, it's important to note that starting with a new breed is challenging. However, we can proudly state that the interest in Texas Longhorns among our neighboring farmers is slowly increasing. This encourages us to persevere in our pursuit of our objective! In light of this, we purchased another herd sire and two cows from Anne Leichtenstern in Germany, expanding our farm's operations and allowing us to continue growing by crossing the best heifers from one sire to the other.
We hope to remain part of the ITLA family for a long time and contribute to preserving this remarkable breed. Furthermore, we encourage new breeders to embark on their own projects. While it's not an easy journey, every small achievement along the way makes it all worthwhile.

Our 26th Annual Ohio River Valley Show took place this year at the Belmont County Fairgrounds in St. Clairsville, OH. This beautiful location was perfect and brought a whole new community out to view, learn, and experience all that our industry has to offer. Over 30 Breeders came from different parts of Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. While few experienced our show for the first time, many have come back year after year. This year, we were fortunate enough to have 4 different shows in one weekend. Judges included; Preston Berkeley (Youth), Mike Tomey (Haltered), Dr. Keith Berkeley (Non-Haltered), and our line of five judges for the return of our Buckeye Classic Futurity; Kathy Palladini, Tim Caudill, Dr. Keith Berkeley, Johnny Hicks, and Dick Lowe.
A new location and show format brought record breaking numbers out to compete this year. Our show in total consisted of 208 entries. With an increased number of entries came a whole new level of organization and hardwork. We would like to thank everyone that had a hand in the success of the weekend. We are looking forward to building upon this success for next year. We hope the photos share the great fellowship and memories experienced at our 2023 Ohio Show, we encourage you to click the link at the bottom to view the full gallery on our website!

Texas Longhorn in Europe
How it all began
Written and Photos By: Urs WeissIn 2002 we, as Swiss, got involved with the Texas Longhorn. What we did not know was that there were no purebred Texas Longhorns in Europe. After a long search we found someone in Denmark who was in possession of embryos. We bought two Holstein cows which were fertilized. From them we got on 11.11.2004 the calf First Lady and on 12.24.2004 the bull King Noel. This was the first purebred breeding pair of Texas Longhorn in Europe. The story begins in the small Switzerland. The interest increased rapidly in Switzerland as well as in whole Europe. Therefore we decided 08.01.2005 on the Swiss National Day to found the STLA Swiss Texas Longhorn Association to bring together all interested parties. Another import of 35 embryos from the breeding of Dickinson Cattle CO. followed in 2008. With this breeding material we were able to raise a few lines, from which we also exported to Europe. Our first customer was Micha Hamersky from Austria. But this was not enough to supply all interested parties. A future breeder and good friend made the proposal to make a live import from Canada, other interested parties came, we decided to realize this together. A little later he set out and bought 14 cattle in Canada. The quarantine was delayed for two years. With the import in 2013, 32 Texas Longhorn came to Switzerland. The stock in Switzerland today includes over a hundred animals, we ourselves keep an average of 35 Texas Longhorn. Since our ranch is located in a very dry area, we are still convinced of the breed. Also the meat can be marketed very well. We are Urs and Daniela Weiss with son Pascal and daughter Larissa, both already moved out. Run a small farm in the north of Switzerland. This includes Texas Longhorn, fruit, vines and grain, also a distillery may not be missing. The products are mostly marketed directly. Our ranch is also called little Texas.
The STLA has 20 members at the moment. www.texaslonghorn.ch www.stla.ch
Rachael Martin
2023 ITLA Queen
Hey y ’all my name is Rachael Martin I am the 2023 Miss ITLA Queen I am a senior in high school from North Carolina and a member of NETLA & ITLA. I love Jesus, family, animals, & kids. I have had the best time representing the ITLA this year and I’m looking forward to all the new experiences yet to come. It has been wonderful to teach others about Texas Longhorns and agriculture while meeting so many new people along this journey. Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to represent the breed we love through this special position.
1 Timothy 4:12WHAT'S NEW
Hey Y’all. This month I have been eagerly anticipating my show cows giving birth to their first calves and getting ready for the 2023 ITLA Convention & Championship Show. This final month of summer in the south has been a little less traditional, but I got the opportunity to promote and share my passion for Longhorns in a few ways that I never even anticipated!
I had lots of family come in from California and I got the chance to introduce them to my show animals. It was awesome to show my Grandpa Jack and my Great-Grandparents Ron & Jean what I get to do as a member of ITLA youth and all that goes in to preparing and training for the show ring. They all were full of questions and loved hearing about my experiences. I even learned that as a young man, my Grandpa Ron (who will turn 90 when we are at the '23 Championship Show!!!) went to an agricultural college just like I am planning to do! I was blessed to make special memories with my Grandpa Jack at the ranch as I watched him fall in love with Longhorns just like I have.
I also got the chance to promote the breed with pictures & by an interview that was written up in my school yearbook which will stay with each student wherever they go in the future. (In the article, they mentioned not only the ITLA but included a part about the Drover as well.)
This year has flown by, I cannot believe it’s almost time for the ITLA Championship Show again. **SHOUT OUT** to all ITLA youth girls if you are interested in going out for the ITLA Queen, Princess, or Little Miss - go for it!! It has been a wonderful opportunity for me, and I have gained many enjoyable, and memorable experiences through the position this year!
Happy Fall...See you all in Oklahoma.
God Bless,Rachael Martin
Psalm 103:1-2 Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
Ally Miller
2023 ITLA Princess
I am a 12 year old Idaho farm girl in her 4th year showing long horns She has represented the ITLA as their Princess following in her older sister's royalty footsteps. Art and livestock of all types fill her time Entering the 7th grade this Fall, Ally will have wrapped up her 4th year in 4H and will be prepping for the ITLA Championship Show where she will be among several Idaho youth travelling south to show their long horns.
WHAT'S NEW
I had the opportunity to represent the ITLA on horseback with my sister, Miss Rodeo Idaho, in a local parade. A few days later I spoke with my 4H Longhorn club to our Farm Bureau. Our Longhorn program has outgrown the barn. We are very close to having enough sponsorships to build a new barn at the fairgrounds.
Our Twin Falls County Fair is happening as the Drover comes out this month, and our 12 youth plus 2 pee wee showmen are ready! Some of us will be seeing you in October!
