ending human traďŹƒcking one step at a time

human trafficking has to stop. human trafficking is one of the fastest growing forms of organised crime in the world and brings together many human rights abuses, including rape, the removal of freedom, keeping people in poverty and taking away their right to express themselves freely. We all need to play a part in ending it. In The Long Run is a long distance, team endurance run that follows international human trafficking routes allowing you to raise money and awareness to help stop trafficking. All money raised goes directly to Oasis projects helping victims and preventing human trafficking in the first place.

Sofia, Bulgaria

Rome, Italy

A beautiful and challenging 1000km run through 4 countries, 5 major cities and over 1 ocean in just 9 days, culminating in the stunning approach to one of the world’s most ancient symbols of slavery, the Coliseum in Rome. Starting in Bulgaria, the route will go through Macedonia then across Albania to the Mediterranean Ocean. Catching a ferry to Bari in Italy, runners will make the journey through Naples, camping on the sides of Mount Vesuvias before making the final approach to Rome along the Via Appia. While making your way through some of the most stunning countryside Europe has to offer, you will also have opportunity to meet some of the people your marathon effort will be helping. Join us and help end human trafficking one step at a time.

what is human trafficking? Human trafficking is when a woman, child or man is tricked or forced to go with a trafficker to another place and is then exploited, either through forced labour, sexual abuse, or forced begging. A trafficked person could end up in a brothel, working as a domestic servant, begging on the streets, working for a cleaning company or picking crops. It is a hidden crime so nobody knows exactly how many millions of people are trafficked globally but it affects every continent and every country. Whether it's an origin country where people are trafficked from; a transit country where people are trafficked through; or a destination country where people are trafficked to. Often a country will be all three.

what does Oasis do? Oasis works with marginalised and exploited people, giving them a chance of freedom and community and helping them fulfil their potential. In The Long Run specifically helps to fund work in Belgium with trafficked Thai women, women exploited through Mail Order Bride Agencies and with children living in squats and on the streets in Brussels, helping them stay in school and reducing the chance of them being trafficked into forced begging.

1000km is a long way, but you won’t have to run it all. ITLR is a team relay where participants run with 2 or 3 people of their own ability. You need to be able to run at least 10km a day for 9 days. There are navigation and cooking teams and a support team in cars and on bicycles. First night hotel accomodation in Sofia is covered in the registration fee, after which camping equipment is provided as the team camp at pre-arranged stops along the route. Any accommodation after the finish in Rome will need to be booked by participants themselves. In The Long Run: Sofia - Rome 2014 will start in the morning on July 12th and will finish at the Coliseum in the late afternoon of July 20th. It is necessary that runners and volunteers be in Sofia for the evening of July 11th.

There is no minimum amount a runner has to raise but we hope to reach a total of €30,000. When you register for the run you will receive information and tips on how to fundraise.

Each runner must pay a registration fee of €350 to cover accommodation on the night of the 11th at a hotel in Sofia, camping for the duration of the run, food and one running shirt. Accommodation in Rome after the run and travel costs to Sofia and from Rome are not covered. Once registered, payment details will be sent in the participant pack.
