...and some! That was clearly evident from the applause and cheers that winners of the 2nd Digital Studio India Channel Partner Awards received on the awards evening. What was particularly striking is that for an event in its second year, the response to the awards was spectacular–if we are allowed to do a bit of chest-thumping ourselves. And well, permit us a bit of immodesty, because as part of our strategy to improve industry engagement, we undertook several new initiatives this time around; and it clicked! For starters, we created digitalstudioawards.com with detailed information about the awards, categories, eligibility, and nomination process. Additionally, our team worked tirelessly to encourage people to upload their nominations on the site directly. Aware that our audience is spread across various networks, including social media channels, we leveraged on our strong online presence to reach out to them, which helped us get over 120 nominations in toto. After doing the first round of elimination to disqualify nomination forms with insufficient and incorrect information, the remainder were then shared with our jury members. These comprised industry veterans from the broadcasting, film and post-production domains, who handpicked the winners. And it was not an easy task for them, since they had to sift through, and deliberate over, these for a long time. You can read more about this transparent mechanism for selecting the champions as well as the award winners in our cover story. This time around, we introduced several new categories, based on the feedback we received during our debut event last year. What was interesting was that at the awards the nominees who did not win were as dignified as the winners were graceful in accepting their trophies. Everyone let their accomplishments do the talking, which speaks volumes about the wisdom and objectivity of this industry. We, at Digital Studio, would once again like to congratulate all the winners. And to everyone else who almost made it, better luck next time!

RED UNVEILS MONSTRO 8K VV MONSTRO 8K VV, AN EVOLUTION OF DRAGON 8K VV, INCLUDES IMPROVEMENTS IN DYNAMIC RANGE AND SHADOW DETAIL RED Digital Cinema has announced a new cinematic full-frame sensor, Monstro 8K VV, for Weapon cameras. The Monstro is an evolutionary step beyond the Dragon 8K VV sensor with improvements in image quality, including dynamic range and shadow detail. Weapon 8K VV is the newest camera and sensor combination and offers full-frame lens coverage, captures 8K full format motion at up to 60 fps, produces ultradetailed 35.4 megapixel stills, and delivers data speeds up to 300 MB/s. And like all of Red’s DSMC2 cameras, the Weapon shoots simultaneous Redcode RAW and Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD/HR recording and adheres to the company’s dedication to Obsolescence Obsolete—a core operating principle that allows RED owners to upgrade their technology as innovations are unveiled and move between camera systems without having to purchase allnew gear.

18 NOVEMBER 2017 | DIGITAL STUDIO

“RED’s internal sensor programme continues to push the boundaries of pixel design and Monstro is the materialisation of our relentless pursuit to make the absolute best image sensors on the planet,” said Jarred Land, president, RED Digital Cinema. “The Full Frame 8K VV Monstro provides unprecedented dynamic range and breathtaking colour accuracy with full support for our IPP2 pipeline.” Monstro 8K VV will replace the Dragon 8K VV in Red’s line-up. Additionally, Red has made its enhanced image-processing pipeline (IPP2) available in-camera with the company’s latest firmware release for all cameras with Helium and Monstro sensors. IPP2 offers a completely overhauled workflow experience, featuring enhancements such as smoother highlight roll-off, better management of challenging colours, and an improved demosaicing algorithm.

Crystal Vision has improved the operation of its Safire 3 real-time chroma keyer in a live situation following significant changes to the VisionPanel universal control panel. VisionPanel is designed to operate up to 16 Crystal Vision Indigo or Vision frames, with its physical controls making it suited to products such as Safire 3 that need regular adjustment. As broadcasters search for increased efficiency, the VisionPanel enhancements all result in faster and easier operation, with various improvements made to the 3U Ethernet control panel’s touch screen, knobs and hard buttons following consultation with expert users who operate chroma keyers daily. Benefitting from Crystal Vision’s responsive technical support, the Safire 3 modular real-time chroma keyer is ideal for applications from weather to immersive virtual studios, with a simple intuitive workflow for setting up a key, support for resolutions from SD to 1080p, and features such as lighting compensation, colour correction, and video delay to help solve common real-world issues. VisionPanel’s touch screen improvements include making it more responsive, as well as increasing the size of the Home button to make it easier to press. The drop down menus on the touch screen have been replaced with a ‘radio group’ style control, which allows faster operation. New navigation has also quickened the workflow when moving between menus. VisionPanel’s knob improvements include swapping the coarse and fine adjustment for easier operation. www.digitalstudioindia.com

BY SATYAM NAGWEKAR he evening of 13th October 2017, the day of the second annual Digital Studio India Channel Partner Awards 2017, got off to a rollicking start thanks to months of planning and careful execution. The bonhomie began with pre-show networking that saw the mingling of various stakeholders in the media and entertainment industry—channel partners, systems integrators, manufacturers,

and folks from the Indian film industry. The proceedings got underway with an exquisite performance by flutist Milind Date and his troupe, who enthralled the crowd with their wide repertoire of tunes, even getting the competitive juices flowing. The stage was set for a memorable evening as Wildfire Sonic Magic’s CEO Jonathon Wales, SAM’s Amit Daftary, Zeiss’s Umender Shah, and ITP’s Bibhor Srivastava and Saikumar Shanmugam assembled on stage for the

lamp-lighting ceremony. After standing steadfastly while the national anthem played, the prospect of an exciting evening ahead had everyone on the seat’s edge. Srivastava delivered the opening word, giving the lowdown on ITP Media Group’s 10-year journey. He also shared some key insights into the M&E industry, reaffirming the industry’s upward growth trajectory despite the tough economic climate. This year, Nageshwar Hanchate, the re-

Some very interesting perspectives on the digital age were put forth by Wales in his keynote address. A veteran film mixer and re-recording mixer, he has a long filmography that includes movies such as The Legend of Hercules, The Calling, and Mean Girls. Along with sharing anecdotes from his life and career, he also explained the nuances of next-generation technology, throwing open for discussion a bunch of mind-numbing statistics. “We are living in an age of superlatives.

There are more people alive today than those that have died in the history of mankind. The booming population is leading to a personalisation of entertainment.” Shweta Kapoor, the compere for the evening, chimed in as needed as the proceedings took course, ensuring that the crowd was at the in syn with the goings on, all along. Namrata Kaushik, Red Chillies VFX’s PR head, said, “It was a well-executed event. Such awards should be held regularly as they serve to boost the enthusiasm of the community.” SETTING THE STAGE The introduction of nominations, along with the jury, this year served to add credibility to the entire winner-selection process. Digital Studio India editor, Vinita Bhatia, in her address, explained the entire process. “We began work three months and accomplished much despite naysayers saying it could not be done. Our goal was to improve and amend

the entire winner-selection process to add a greater element of credibility to the awards,” she said. To set the ball rolling, a website was created with view of disseminating information on the awards for sponsors, nominees, and attendees. The website also served as the single point for the all-online nomination process. “Our discussions and consultations with industry leaders gave us plenty of good ideas to make the awards better. Based on this feedback, we instituted new categories.” In the lead up to the inviting nominations, the parameters for selection and the nomination process were finalised. Once things were set in place, a massive campaign, in conjunction with ITP’s marketing team, was put in place to get the word out. While the number of eventual nominations exceeded expectations, several applications were weeded out for lack of information. The jury, consisting of Walt Disney India executive director and head of technology

Manas Ranajan Mati, Viacom VP and CTO Rajasekharan Harikrishnan, and cinematographer RM Rao, debated the applications hours on end in the offices of ITP. They were called on stage and facilitated. Gaurav Gupta, MD and founder, FutureWorks Media, also a part of the jury, was the notable absence. TROPHY TIME Picking up from where they left last year, Cineom Broadcasting took home the Best National Distributor (Broadcasting) trophy and also won the coveted Best Systems Integrator award for the second year running. Real Impact also took home two winners’ trophies (Best Rental Company – North and Best Rental Company - West). The Rising Star award of the year was snagged by Ideal Broadcasting’s Mala Mathur and Shemaroo Entertainment’s Jai Maroo. The Best Cinematographer award—one of the new categories this year—was , amid much fanfare, won by

Award-winning re-recording mixer Jonathon Wales, SAM’s Amit Daftary, ITP Media Group’s Bibhor Srivastava and Saikumar Shanmugam, and Zeiss’s Umender Shah during the traditional lamp-lighting.

The mostanticipated award of the evening, the Lifetime Achievement award, was won by Benchmark Broadcast Systems CEO Ashish Mukherjee. Quipped Harish Samtani, chairman, Stereovision, “Apart from the facilitation aspect, the Digital Studio awards afford a great platform to industry people to gather around and exchange ideas and views.” REACTIONS FROM THE INDUSTRY As the evening progressed and the winners were called on stage, there was an outpouring of reactions. What we gleaned from these interactions was that while a few things could be made better, we got most things right this time round. Said Deohans in a chat after he won the

award, “Happy to see so many categories and so many deserving people winning the awards. The terrific jury only made things better. The Digital Studio brand stands for much more than the magazine.” “The awards this time have been a seachange from last year. Everything has been so slick. The experience has truly been of an international standard. The thing that stood out was that the range of technology that was appreciated widened,” said Samtani. AVF Distributors’ Rajendra Shah could hardly contain his praise for the professionalism with which the nominations were encouraged and the awards were conducted. “The platform encompassed much of the broadcast universe. This one of the best events for the fraternity.” From a film perspective, creating a bigger awareness of the awards, Redchillies’ Kaushik believes, is the way going forward. “It is a big shot in the arm to get the Rising Star award from Digital Studio. With many small victories, there is much to celebrate this year for the Digital Studio team. As the awards drew to an end, a feeling of quiet contentment washed over us. CONSUMER CONNECT — RIEDEL COMMUNICATIONS

“If I had to boil our success down to a single element, I would say it is about finding great people and then giving them the freedom and tools to do their best.”

30 YEARS OF INNOVATION Thomas Riedel, founder and CEO of Riedel Communications shares his thoughts on Riedel’s past, present, and future.

C

elebrating 30 years of business this year, Riedel Communications has become synonymous with excellence in real-time audio, data, and communications networks. Riedel solutions have starred in a wide range of marquee events such as Formula 1, the Lillehammer and Sochi Winter Games, and Red Bull Stratos, when Felix Baumgartner jumped to earth from the stratosphere. Today, Riedel has almost 500 employees working at its state-of-the-art headquarters in Wuppertal, Germany and locations around the world. Here, we asked the company’s founder and CEO, Thomas Riedel, to share his thoughts on Riedel’s past, present, and future. Riedel Communications has come a long way in 30 years. Can you tell us more about your humble beginnings, and how things have evolved over the past three decades? My interest in entertainment probably started when I was about 12 and launched my first ‘career’ as a magician. Later on in

64 NOVEMBER 2017 | DIGITAL STUDIO

Thomas Riedel.

school, I got interested in lighting and sound technologies, and it grew from there. My early interest in theater soon expanded to broadcast and everything else in the world of entertainment. In the beginning, it was really more about being aware of opportunities, and then being

in a position to take advantage of them, rather than some grand plan. For instance, I happened to purchase some radios from Motorola, which created an opportunity to provide specialised communications solutions that resulted in my first product, the RiFace radio interface. As we have grown over the years, we have been keenly aware that we needed a strong company that could be trusted to handle large projects, but at the same time would also be small and agile enough that we could respond quickly to changing market needs. However, if I had to boil our success down to a single element, I would say it is about finding great people and then giving them the freedom and tools to do their best. Today, this is evident throughout our organisation, from the executive team to our product management teams, the guys in rental, the back-office team, and the professionals who are out there every day advising, teaching, and supporting our clients worldwide.

CONSUMER CONNECT — RIEDEL COMMUNICATIONS

As you think back over the company’s history, what Riedel milestones stand out the most for you? Our entry into Formula 1 happened by accident. I was in Lillehammer working on the 1994 Winter Games, and I was doing an interview for Radio Wuppertal, a local station. We were talking about our work on matrix intercom technology prior to launching Artist. In Germany, an F1 representative was driving down the Autobahn and heard the interview, and that is how we got involved in motor sports. We have been supporting F1 events around the world with communications and signal transmission solutions ever since. A very important milestone for our company was the introduction of our Artist digital matrix intercom system in 2000. Artist brought us our first real international customer base, and it was really ahead of its time – a brand new intercom approach based on decentralised nodes in a fiber network. That was a pretty revolutionary idea at the time, and now decentralized networks are a given today. Of course, the MediorNet launch in 2009 was another big product milestone. MediorNet broke ground as the first fiberbased video network for integrated signal transport. It was a completely new approach to broadcast, event, or stadium production – a single box for signal transport, routing, and processing that can handle any type of signal. Recently on another interview, a journalist asked me what was coming next after we’d been to the stratosphere with Felix

Baumgartner’s Stratos project – providing not just communications and audio but also the professional video that billions of people saw. I mentioned that we would like to go to the moon next, and now we have that project. We will be providing the communications and signal infrastructure for next year’s Mission to the Moon, led by PTScientists, whose aim is to be the first private company to land on the Moon. And of course, 2017’s big product news is the Bolero wireless intercom system. Why is Bolero so groundbreaking? DECT-based intercom systems have previously had a problem with reflections, which means they haven’t really been reliable in large buildings like sports arenas. We knew there was a huge demand for a DECT system that could actually work and could cover all segments of the market, not just certain areas like outside broadcast or fixed installations. There was no universal system that could solve the frequency issues and also provide the quality, low latency, and intelligence people were looking for in an advanced intercom system. We were very determined not to launch a product until we were sure it could meet these requirements. All we needed was the right idea and the path to a viable technology. It took about three years and a serious R&D investment, but we finally hit on the right solution with our Advanced DECT Receiver (ADR) technology. ADR is a diversity receiver technology specifically designed to reduce sensitivity to multipath RF “We will be providing the communications and signal infrastructure for next year’s Mission to the Moon, led by PTScientists, whose aim is to be the first private company to land on the Moon.”

reflections, making it useable in challenging RF environments where other systems have great difficulty. With Bolero and ADT, we believe we offer the absolute best DECT solution on the market, and so far the sales numbers bear this out. Bolero meets a critical market need like nothing else that’s available. Entrepreneurship seems to be a big passion of yours. Tell us about the work you’re doing with groups like the leAD Sports accelerator in Berlin. As a life-long entrepreneur, I am very grateful for the support I got from family and my first clients when I started Riedel 30 years ago. And today, encouraging and supporting new business creation has never been more important. At Riedel, we strongly believe that creating environments where imagination, enthusiasm, and entrepreneurship all come together is critical for driving innovation and fostering new businesses. That is why I am proud to contribute to the work of leAD Sports. leAD seeks to unite entrepreneurs, experts, athletes, mentors, and international investors with startup companies and is closely linked to the philosophy of Adidas founder Adi Dassler – creating the best to help athletes perform at their best. There’s a lot of synergy there with Riedel, since we are closely aligned with marquee sports and entertainment events. It is clear to me that sports will continue to move and motivate the masses, and these new innovators are the ones that will find and develop the technologies that will draw viewers more deeply into events. So what’s next for Riedel? The future’s bright. We’re looking forward to participating in projects like Mission to the Moon and continuing to provide the best-possible solutions for the complex and mission-critical comms and signal transmission challenges that this type of a highly visible event presents. With the best and most passionate people in the business– from engineers and product managers to sales, service, and support–we’re on top of our game. I may have gotten my start as a magician, but now almost 500 Riedel employees perform their magic every day. It just proves the maxim, ‘There is no ‘I’ in TEAM!’

MICROSERVICES: THE LATEST ADDITION TO A BROADCAST ENGINEER’S TOOLKIT Selecting the right tool for the right job is every skilled professional’s mantra. But for today’s broadcast engineers, facing mounting pressure to maximise efficiency and increase productivity, that adage is even more relevant. What is changing, though, is the contents of their toolbox. The shift from purpose-built hardware toward software-oriented systems and ITbased environments has set the stage for media professionals to harness the power and flexibility of microservices, a software component-based approach to workflow design that increases the agility and performance of media operations. The building blocks of a modern broadcast facility, microservices help broadcast engineers to construct cloud-native workflows that can exploit the capabilities of geo-dispersed environments—as well as premises-based operations built on commercial-off-the-shelf compute and networking equipment. Microservices enable media companies to build applications and services by stringing together a series of autonomous processes that deliver unparalleled efficiency and enable broadcasters and other media companies to continuously and non-disruptively upgrade operations and introduce new monetisation models. “A microservice is the smallest amount of functionality you can put in the network to

Imagine Communications’ Zenium Microservices.

Brick Eksten, chief product officer, Imagine Communications..

produce a useable network function or service,” explained Brick Eksten, chief product officer, Imagine Communications. “Each microservice does one job, but it does it supremely well.” Much of Imagine Communications’ solutions portfolio, including compression, playout and monitoring systems, are powered by Zenium, the company’s pure microservices platform that currently underpins a library of more than 1,000 cloud-native components. This new, software-oriented approach to broadcast technology enables formerly monolithic operations to be broken down into discrete functions, such as transcode, bitrate changes and audio shuffling that can be utilised across different platforms and replaced or updated as needed. A move to microservices delivers real and purposeful benefits that media companies can take advantage of to move their businesses forward and remain on the competitive edge as video consumption habits rapidly evolve. For starters, a microservices, cloud-native architecture is massively efficient, said Eksten. Media companies only use the resources they need, when they need them. In addition, by breaking applications into discrete functions, media companies are able to scale operations much more efficiency,

only assigning additional resources to the impacted portions of a workflow. That makes the best use of processing resources, minimising the cost of achieving business goals. A well-designed microservices environment also supports customisation, added Eksten. Imagine Communications, for example, works with over a dozen third-party developers such as Dolby and Venera Technologies, and Ittiam Systems to create additional microservices that execute on the Zenium platform, enabling media companies to select from a rich menu of functionality. Recently, Imagine Communications has been collaborating with media companies of all sizes and in all regions through Zenium to enrich existing or new workflows with functionality specific to their businesses. An open microservices platform allows media companies to add new capabilities without increasing the complexity of existing operations. Perhaps, the biggest benefit of microservices architecture, stated Eksten, is support for continuous innovation, which enables media companies to essentially upgrade their operations on the fly by assimilating new technology into their workflows as it becomes available. “The componentised nature of microservices makes it possible for broadcasters to keep current with recent codec, standard or latest-and-greatest technology,” adds Eksten. “If you need to futureproof your network against the accelerated pace of technology development, then moving to a microservices-based architecture is your answer.” Microservices are also essential to fending off competitive threats from new media companies that are native to IP by matching their ability to exploit the benefits and efficiencies of virtualized, geo-dispersed environments. Without moving to microservices, all media companies will be challenged to achieve the scale, agility and speed to market that will be required by media organizations of the future. Microservices are the right tool for the right job. No modern broadcast engineer’s toolkit should be without them.
