choosing a projector...

Lamp Versatile performance, brighter display

Lamp Projector features

T

raditional lamp projectors produce a bright vivid image via a bulb that can reach temperatures of up to 900°C. These projectors are usually larger in size due to their mercury bulb, which can last up to 4,000 hours, but also because of the cooling fans which are needed for the bulb. Despite the bulb’s shorter life span, it can be replaced without the need to replace the whole projector.

Why should your business consider a lamp projector? Lamp projectors are ideal for businesses that will be light users of their projector and won’t be affected if down time occurs for maintenance. Also lamp projectors traditionally display a brighter image in lighter environments or direct sunlight and due to their size are more suited to a static position. Another consideration is the versatility that lamp projectors provide, as they can be used across multiple applications not just data applications.

in association with

When choosing a projector in the past, comparisons wouldn’t have differed greatly, maybe a higher lumens or a lower cost would sway a business. With the introduction of new LED projectors businesses need to consider how they’ll use their projector and which technology will be more beneficial to their needs.

Lampless

Longer life, lower maintenance

Lampless Projector features

T

he new smaller lampless technology replaces the traditional large mercury bulb with an LED light source. The LED light source operates at much lower temperatures (around 90°C) which means they consume considerably less energy, reducing running cost. The LED light source will also last much longer than the traditional bulb, with up to 30,000 hours on some LED projectors. And unlike mercury bulbs the LED light source doesn’t degrade over time, so colour quality will stay the same throughout the life of the product, reducing maintenance and down time. Why should your business consider a lampless projector? An LED projectors’ light source tends to be much smaller than traditional projectors, which mean they’re mobile enough to be taken wherever they’re needed. And because LED projectors don’t have a breakable filament and bulb, they’re more durable too. With 30,000 hours’ LED life, lampless projectors are ideal for heavy users who need their projector to have as little downtime as possible.

The Office Hero As the back-bone of every office environment, the Office Hero provides that dependable pair of hands that keeps the wheels of your business turning. Typically working at the coal-face of your organisation’s relationship with customers or suppliers, these dependable busy bees need technology that keeps pace with their fastmoving workload and helps them to exceed customer expectations. The Office Hero doesn’t necessarily need the very latest in technology or the most powerful solution available, but they do need good old-fashioned reliability that just keeps on going. Office Heroes need solid technology that allows completion of everyday tasks with ease. And because most organisations have a lot of Office Heroes, value-for-money is likely to be an important factor when deciding on the right technology for the job.

Laptop With the increase in BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) and the need to support occasional home-working, many businesses are replacing legacy desktop hardware with more flexible laptop PCs. But before making this move, it’s important not to underestimate the user’s need for connectivity. Tot up the number of peripherals used daily by a typical Office Hero, and you’ll probably find it outstrips the number of ports on most laptops. To get round this, it’s worth considering a dockable laptop. Also known as a port replicator, a dock turns your laptop into a true desktop PC replacement. Your laptop takes its power directly from the mains-connected dock, so there’s no need to worry about battery drainage. Plus, there’ll be more than enough ports to connect a full sized keyboard, mouse and even a full sized monitor if that makes desk-based working a more comfortable experience. Together, the laptop and dock give users the best of both worlds… full functionality for the desk, and ready-to-go mobile portability.

Voice Recognition With the increasing use of smartphone voice apps, people are becoming more and more familiar with speech recognition. When applied in the workplace, this technology can lead to massive productivity benefits, which is music to the ears of our Office Heroes. Why type out your notes, emails, minutes and other documents when you can just dictate them? But isn’t dictation more hassle than it’s worth when the software keeps getting it wrong? In the past perhaps, but speech recognition software has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years thanks to better software algorithms and significant advancements in processors. These days, the results are close to 99% accurate and successful, regardless of your regional accent. Our PowerUser choice:

Printer When choosing a printer or multi-function, don’t be swayed by just the ticket price. You’ll need to consider overall running costs too, including energy consumption and the cost of consumables. Think too about who needs to print and what they’ll be printing. It’s no longer necessary to install a separate printer for the output of sensitive documentation. With features like job storage and pin printing, a sent job will only output when the user is at the printer and ready to collect. They just enter a secret pin and out comes their job. Network printers are the norm for today’s shared office environments, but it doesn’t necessarily follow that all users should share the same level of access to print services. With some models, you can restrict certain users to mono printing, whilst others can access full colour. Alternatively, you could restrict printing by document type allowing colour printing of PDFs, but mono only for emails. Clever configuration like this can help you keep a lid on the on-going cost of consumables.

Multiple Monitors Commonly associated with frenetic environments like a stock exchange, multiple monitor use shouldn’t be confined to traders. Most job functions would benefit from working across two monitors. According to a study carried out by Monitor gurus NEC, dual monitor working can increase productivity by a whopping 10%, which makes it easy to justify the extra investment. A dual monitor set up means workers can easily compare data sets from different sources, or quickly move data between applications. With additional real-estate available, fonts can be enlarged for more comfortable on-screen reading and all in all, users can get through their work faster. But before you pull out your credit card, here are a few things to consider. Firstly, work involving imagery demands true-to-life colour reproduction, so consider an IPS or MVA display. These monitors offer really accurate colour reproduction, as well as improved viewing angles compared to TN displays.

For the sharpest image quality, look for HDMI, DVI-D or the latest connection technology on the block, Thunderbolt. Developed by Apple and Intel, a Thunderbolt display allows you to daisy other displays and accessories with blazing fast speeds. Our PowerUser choice:

The Road Warrior Never in the same place two days in a row, the Road Warrior can spend as much time out of the office, as in it. Sometimes known by their alter-ego, the Mobile Information Worker, these heroes of the open road demand agility, flexibility and most importantly, portability from their IT kit.

Cloud-based access to files For the Road Warrior, business simply can’t stop the moment they step out of the office building. In today’s competitive marketplace, even a slight slow-down could be the difference between success and failure. Regardless of the device they’re using, mobile workers need to know they can keep collaborating and working on their documents wherever they may roam. And that’s where Microsoft Office 365 comes in.

But that’s not all. Frequently travelling Road Warriors such as field sales, business consultants, financial professionals and senior executives also need power and performance in spades, and they’re not prepared to sacrifice it for convenience. Of course staying in touch with the office through email and collaboration tools is also paramount, so we’ve focused on the essentials that a Road Warrior will need to be truly productive on the go.

With Office 365, you can enjoy virtually anywhere access to your familiar Office applications, with business-grade email, calendar and video conferencing across nearly all your devices – from PCs to smartphones to tablets. All you need is an internet connection!

Communications Most businesspeople these days are equipped with a smartphone. Whilst they do some pretty nifty things, they’re often not that great for the most basic of functions: making a call. First there’s background noise to contend with, then there’s the crick in your neck, not to mention needing more limbs than an octopus to keep tabs on all your bags! A wireless headset is the ideal solution. Today’s models offer the comfort and prolonged battery life you’ll need for all day wear, whilst clever sensors automatically react to your movements and the changing sound environment around you. All-in all, you’ll enjoy top notch call clarity every time. You can even pick up a call with a simple voice command, giving a true hands free experience wherever and however you’re travelling. Incredibly thin

Ultrabook Although the explosion of smartphone use has seen a massive increase in connected workers, let’s get real. It’s not really practical to produce or even edit documents such as slide-decks and spreadsheets on a phone or tablet. Introduced in 2012, Ultrabooks on the other hand offer the portability associated with tablets, but with the extra power of a fully functioning laptop PC. For ultimate performance, consider models with the Intel Core i7 ULV processor. These offer all the punch you’ll need, but use far less power than a standard processor giving battery life of up to 8 hours on some models. That’s a true full days’ work. If you need to get down to work instantly, take a look at models with SSD (Solid State Drives) rather than HDD (Hard Disk Drives). Although you get less storage space with SSD, it’s offset by the benefit of almost instant boot times. Plus, SSDs contain no moving parts so they’re less likely to fail and potentially jeopardise access to your stored data. Those with concerns over the security of their data will welcome the in-built finger print readers and data encryption that comes with many business Ultrabook models, giving added protection should their Ultrabook ever fall into the wrongs hands.

Secure Flash Drive For business users on-the-go, robust security of data is essential. If you’re transferring data via flash drives, then look for AES-256 hardware encryption. It’s the strongest standard data encryption on the market and offers an exceptionally high level of security. These drives also offer rugged construction specifically built to withstand the rough and tumble of mobile working for long term protection of your data. If you want to go to the extremes of data security then there’s only one option: FIPS 140-2 Certification. Developed by the U.S. Government, FIPS 140 is the cryptography standard required for protection of sensitive data by stateside Federal Agencies. You can imagine the level of data protection this offers! Just one very important note: Don’t forget your password :) Our PowerUser choice:

A graphics tablet can bring a huge amount of freedom to the workflow of a Creative Wiz, providing more intuitive and ergonomic ways to create than a traditional mouse and keyboard combination could ever offer. Graphics tablets are ideal for the creation of detailed illustrations, sketches and all sorts of digital art, but there are benefits for nonartists too. As well as a great way to capture handwritten notes in meetings, the graphics tablet also provides a more ergonomic method of input that can help reduce the likelihood of developing repetitive strain injury. Workstation A typical worker running standard office applications should get all the performance they need from a business laptop or desktop PC. But for demanding users like designers, architects and those crunching huge amounts of financial data, a workstation offers a more powerful solution to support increased productivity. Standard PCs are built to support consumer-grade graphics cards, but a Creative producing detailed 2D or 3D imagery will definitely need something with more oomph. Workstations are built for busy, hungry workloads. They’re robust, powerful and can easily be tailored to meet a specific user’s needs. What’s more, workstations typically hold double the memory of an equivalent PC, making them ideal for using processor intensive applications.

data seamlessly. An IPPBX affords the stability and flexibility to cope with the ever increasing demands of the busy office, benefiting companies that operate over multiple site locations and empowering staff who travel on business or work from home. Instead of using the traditional circuit-switched PSTN network, IP telephony converts the voice into a digital signal that routes your phone calls over the internet. Using your LAN, the IPPBX brings telephony into your network to integrate and communicate with your other applications and devices. This allows sophisticated communications that will reshape your business and bring significant cost savings as well as performance benefits.

IP telephony offers a highly reliable, professional, low cost telephone system that can process a high volume of both calls and

Case Study: “One of the great things about this product is that it can be connected to two separate broadband connections allowing voice and data traffic to be completely separated. This ensures the voice calls receive maximum and uninterrupted network coverage for great call quality. It also gives us a failover option in the event of line network problems”

IP-PBXs needn’t cost the earth and can be simply integrated into your existing telephone system. You don’t need additional licensing or special extension wiring as the system connects to your regular network. Just one cable supports voice and data to each desktop. Not only that, there’s no need to throw out your current equipment. You can carry on using your existing analogue and SIP handsets as well as all your other office equipment such as faxes and PDQ machines.

Growth when you need it: IP telephony is fully scalable and flexible, placing your business in prime position for future growth. Adding users to the system is easy; just one virtual line can carry multiple calls and numbers, cutting out line rental bills. On top of that, VoIP networks are much easier to configure, install and maintain than traditional phone systems, saving maintenance costs. IP telephony

Does your school’s wireless network make the grAde? The demands of a school’s wireless network are like no other Classrooms of users trying to gain access simultaneously can create a demand that many networks can’t cope with and that’s if the wireless coverage is capable of reaching every classroom in the first place. Add to that the issue of security and you can see why a school’s wireless network struggles to make the grade.

Sound familiar?

he way today’s school children are learning is evolving. Lessons are now more interactive via Wi-Fi-enabled devices such as laptops, tablets and whiteboards. But the flood of these devices has highlighted a problem for many schools... their wireless network.

C Roo Stadium

Office

Campus

High Density Problem At the start of each lesson a school’s access points are bombarded by users trying to log on to the wireless network in order to gain the materials for the lesson. But a lot of the time the network can’t cope and this leaves half the classroom including the teacher waiting. So instead of enriching learning through new and exciting content, the wireless network has caused a disruption to the lesson plan and the children’s learning. When a teacher reverts back to their conventional textbook, it does leave you asking whether it was worth investing in all the technology in the first place.

networks which struggle in older buildings. Installing Ethernet cabling is difficult due to the thicker ceilings and floors. A solution to wireless coverage problems is installing numerous access points around the school to ensure strong and reliable coverage, but this can be a very expensive solution, especially when the school campus is vast.

Security problem When it comes to a school’s wireless network, security can pose a problem if there’s only one wireless network available to all.

The wireless network can’t distinquish between the different types of users The problem arises when the wireless network can’t distinguish between the different types of users

Coverage problem Another problem which can plague a school’s network is poor or non-existing coverage to certain parts of the school campus.

Wireless signals can struggle to reach the user’s device With the majority of school campuses now being made up of old, dense buildings as well as new buildings, wireless signals can struggle to reach the user’s device. This means if a user is able to log onto the network they might experience the wireless signal drop off if they move around a classroom or a school campus. And it’s not just wireless

There is a solution... Class Rooms

fice

Field Class Rooms

Ruckus Wireless can eliminate the common problems which school networks face. High Density Solution

because they’re all on the same network. Instead of restricting access to some, it might restrict access to all or it might not restrict access at all, so pupils could gain access to test papers, teacher’s folders and more sensitive information. And with the Bring Your Own Device initiative on the increase, users are more likely to be using their device unsupervised, so it’s important that staff have a separate network from pupils and guests.

How do you give each user a secure, consistent, fair wireless network?

The high density problem which paralyses networks at the start of lessons can be eliminated with Ruckus’ ZoneFlex™ system. The ZoneFlex™ system allows classrooms of users access to a single access point at the same time whilst providing each user with enough bandwidth to access the content they need for that lesson. Ruckus achieve this via patented technology, that allows the system to get users on and off the wireless network quickly, ensuring hundreds of users can access a single access point that delivers reliable fast Wi-Fi connectivity. But as some schools have found out, it’s no good having a wireless network which can deal with high density if those users can’t access the wireless because the coverage simply doesn’t reach.

Security Solution Having Wi-Fi coverage in every nook and cranny is great when it’s being used by the right people for the right reasons but there will be times when users try to gain access to files they shouldn’t. Ruckus ZoneDirector technology keeps a school’s wireless network secure by only allowing authorised users onto the network. Once a user has been authorised they’re given their own unique key and network settings for their device. Ruckus has the ability to create multiple networks so users can be given accessibility rights. This means staff can have a separate network which only their devices can access.

Coverage Solution

Bonuses of Ruckus

Ruckus solves the problem of poor coverage in two parts. Firstly Ruckus’ engineers create a Heat Map of a school’s campus. A Heat Map signal displays where the wireless reaches on a school’s campus, highlighting any potential obstacles. From this map the engineer can work out how many access points are needed and where they need to be positioned.

Long Range

The second part of the solution is Ruckus’ BeamFlex™ technology. Using the data collected from the heat map the BeamFlex™ technology directs the signal towards the teacher or pupil, using the best path available, even directing the signal around the obstacles highlighted by the heat map. So a school’s campus is covered by the wireless network

Adaptive antenna technology and airtime fairness for high-density areas

virtually anywhere… even outside. All this is done using far fewer access points, but providing two to four times the coverage.

As well as solving the main problems which schools encounter with their wireless network, Ruckus also has other benefits for a school.

Some school’s campuses can be kilometres apart which means that they have to pay for a fixed broadband line for each site. This can be expensive to both implement and maintain with recurring costs. Ruckus’ solution to this problem is high-performance bridges that can offer up to 50 Mbps at 8km. This solution effectively eliminates these recurring costs allowing that part of the budget to be invested in other departments.

Ruckus Wireless products are tailor made solutions which are ideal for schools. If you’d like to discover more information about Ruckus Wireless and what it can do for you, call your BT Business Direct account manager or our sales team on 0870 429 3941
