During the more than sixty years of its existence, Toneelacademie Maastricht has become synonymous with excellence in professional skill and artistic development both in the Netherlands and abroad. Based on a solid foundation within the traditional theatre practice, the Toneelacademie seeks out the boundaries of our multimedia society. Within the world of the stage, the cinema, and the new media, it challenges its students to feel at home on different platforms. All of this out of a desire to secure a prime position for the unique talents of each new generation of actors, performers and directors and prepare them for a professional career in this world. Within Europe, the Toneelacademie is collaborating with schools in Munich and Manchester. Each year we will be creating a joint production as a prelude to a more extensive collaboration within a European Theatre School.

Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag Attending the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague means studying at a musical institute that has guaranteed top quality education for many decades and offers teaching by top-level international musicians, where tradition and professional skill are inextricably bound up with experiment and innovation. Our primary aim is to instil young talents with the highest levels of artisticity, traditional skill and versatility to be able to function within the demanding and continuously changing professional environment. The Koninklijk Conservatorium has been at the heart of The Hague’s musical circles for many years and has been among the initiators of countless musical events and festivals. The school expressly participates in projects that will focus first on experiencing music and dance and it offers the students themselves the opportunity to shape these projects.

At the Faculteit Theater of the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht, students can take bachelor courses to become actors, theatre makers, playwrights, theatre designers, drama teachers, game designers and digital theatre makers. Each course takes an innovative approach to the theatre: a close involvement with the developments in the theatre and the world around us. We enjoy working with students who will explore the boundaries of the theatre and who have something to say to the world. For example, creating drama that will play with physical and virtual reality or that will turn audience members into participants. This is why we will offer our students the opportunity to work intensively with students from other disciplines during their course and why we focus on students’ own research projects. The Rotterdamse Dansacademie (RDA) is one of the leading professional training courses for contemporary dance in Europe. Each year, the RDA selects a few dozen talented students out of hundreds of dancers from all over the world, and prepares them for a professional career. They will attend the Bachelor’s course in Dance, the Bachelor’s course for Dance Teachers, or the Master’s course in Dance Therapy. The RDA also offers a range of preparatory courses, for instance through the Havo voor Muziek en Dans (secondary musical and dance education). The RDA has over 200 students in its professional training courses (30 nationalities) and around 200 students in its preparatory courses. With the Rotterdams Conservatorium and the Bachelor Rotterdam Circus Arts, the RDA is part of Codarts, Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, a small-scale art academy (1100 students) based in Rotterdam, offering high-quality professional arts education.

From Tuesday 22 June - Wednesday 30 June 2010 Amsterdam’s city centre will once again be brimming over with young talent. The participants in ITs, the International Theatre School Festival Amsterdam, will be taking hold of the theatres. Young graduating performing artists from the Netherlands and abroad will be presenting themselves to a broad audience, consisting of fans of the theatre, casting agencies, programmers and the press. Seeing and being seen, so to speak! The ITs Festival Amsterdam is the stepping stone to a professional career for these young stage beasts. The opportunity to shine

Tim Persent, artistic leader dance ITs Festival Amsterdam ‘The perfect ITs evening? If the audience would first enjoy a good group dance performance and then come to check out the new

choreographers at The Ma kers Present. And if the au dience members would then discuss the work with our dance and choreography ta lents over a glass of wine.’ Tim Persent is the artistic leader for dance at the ITs Festival Amsterdam. He describes ITs as the place for young artists to present themselves to the outside world, and stresses the fes tival’s function as a stepping stone. ‘The students have studied for four years. Now they get to show us what they have learned, their per spective, where their ener gy lies. ITs marks the end

of their careers as students and the start of their pro fessional careers. ITs offers the students an opportunity to shine!’ And there will be a great deal to see this year in the way of dance. In ad dition to the group gradua tion performances from all the Dutch dance schools, there will be a considera ble international compo nent. Verve, for example, by The Northern School of Contemporary Dance from Leeds, ‘Performances from abroad offer us a look in side other dance cultures. How do dancers over there train, what are their artistic

views?’ In addition, Persent always selects a few works by young dance makers. He tries to find people with a certain view on the body and who are not afraid to make choices. ‘What makes you tick as an artist? How do you use lights, sound, space, timing and of course, the body? The appeal is in the choices.‘ At ITs you can see dance in all its variety and Persent wholehearted ly hopes the audience will enjoy it. ‘Come with open eyes and ears, come with an open mind. Curiosity is of the essence. Buy a ticket and come!’

Witness the birth of new international talent ‘I hope the audience will have an unforgettable night at the theatre and witness the birth of some extra ordinary, international new talent,’ says Theu Boer mans, artistic director of the ITs Festival Amsterdam, expressing his wish for the audience. ITs will be offering a diverse and wide-ranging programme that will pre sent a complete overview of theatre students from across the globe. ‘This edi tion is special because our international programme is becoming ever more in teresting from the point of

view of dramatic content. Highlights will of course be the collaborations between the Dutch and international drama schools. But there will be some absolute gems among the performances on the foreign programme as well, from countries such as Iran, Latvia, the Czech Republic and Kosovo.’ The strength of the ITs festival lies in the opportunities it offers young talent to start building on their internatio nal networks and to present their work to other artists, programmers, and audien ces. ‘ITs wants to offer the

talented graduates from the various Dutch and European performing arts schools an international platform, an international network, and access to the international professional field.’ Boer mans underlines the im portance of collaboration among the international partners. ‘The Dutch and fo reign schools will exchange teachers and the students will join forces to present co-productions. ITs is also collaborating with a number of foreign drama school fes tivals in places such as Bil bao, Portugal, Serbia, Bos

Opening & closing night

On Tuesday night, 22 June, the 21st edition of the ITs Festival Amsterdam will open at the Compagnietheater. The piece ‘Drumming’, performed by students from the Brussels dance academy P.A.R.T.S., will set the ball rolling. Artistic Director Theu Boermans will be officially opening the festival at 22.30. Directly afterwards you can have a drink, chat and dance at the first afterparty with DJ D-Rok. The closing night will start with awards flying left and right! The evening will be hosted by none other than Bracha van Doesburg and Waldemar Torenstra. For more information on all the awards we will be giving out, see page 27. Directly after the ceremony, the big closing night party sets off with Phil Horneman’s Wicked Jazz Sounds going full swing into the wee hours! Admission is free for this evening.

Drumming Drumming is a remake of Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker’s performance of the same name from 1998. The driving rhythm of Steve Reich’s music pushes the dancers on in a choreography that is at once complex and deceptively simple. Like the music, the dance arises from a single movement phrase, which is explored for an hour without stopping. Endless combinations, variations, and transformations follow; through reversal, acceleration, and deceleration.

Drumming is een remake van Anna Teresa De Keers maekers gelijknamige voorstelling uit 1998. Het dwin gende ritme van Steve Reichs muziek stuwt de dansers voort in een choreo grafie die tegelijk complex en verraderlijk eenvoudig is. Net als de muziek komt de dans voort uit één en kele bewegingsfrase, die een uur lang zonder ophouden geëxploreerd wordt in ein deloze combinaties, varia ties en transformaties, door omkering, versnelling en vertraging.

Playwriting Debate June 24th, Rozentheater, 17.30 A few short columns written by graduating playwrights will be the basis of a dis cussion on the sense and non-sense of playwriting. It promises to be an inte resting discussion for both playwrights (to be) and di rectors, but also for policy makers and anyone else who is interested. Free entrance.

A speed date with an AFK adviser

A European first! This year, ITs Festival Amsterdam will be organising the Ensemble Week. Ten international and five Dutch theatre students will be working together in tensively for five days. Every morning they will be atten ding a workshop taught by a renowned theatre maker, and then in the afternoon, full of fresh inspiration, they will do some hands-on practical work. Eventually, all the input and teamwork will result in an exciting, unconventional multidisci plinary performance on Tuesday 29 June, which you can attend free of charge!

After the performances listed under Graduates in ACTING and Graduates in DIRECTING, you can participate in discus sions about these shows with the performers, artists and other audience members, at the same venue. These (free) after show talks will last around 20 minutes, pro viding additional background information about the pieces in no time at all. Tisch, a col lective of ten journalists and theatre-makers, will be mo derating the discussions. For the graduates in directing, INSTED will be moderating.

Na de voorstellingen die genoemd staan bij Graduates in ACTING en Graduates in DIRECTING kan je in hetzelfde theater met de performers, de makers en het andere toeschouwers in gesprek gaan over de voorstelling. Deze (gratis) nagesprekken duren circa 20 minuten en geven in sneltreinvaart meer achtergrondinformatie over het werk. Tisch, een collectief van 10 journalisten en theatermakers, leidt de gesprekken. CJP Q&A, ask away! During the CJP Q&A you get to ask the questions. For the very first edition of CJP Q&A we have invited Gijs Scholten van Asschat and Tim Murck. Hein Janssen, theatre critic with De Volkskrant, will be the host of the afternoon. You may know Gijs from the movies Cloaca and De Passievrucht and the tv series Gooische Vrouwen among many other things. Tim played a part in Spangas and the

plays Dat Smoel en Romeo over Julia. Would you like to know if Gijs still suffers from stage fright? Or what Tim’s secret to success is? Ask them yourself during the CJP Q&A at the ITs Festival Amsterdam. Tickets costs € 5,- for CJP members, non-members pay € 10,-.

Direct na zijn afstuderen in 1992 begon Thomas Caley met dansen bij The Merce Cunningham Dance Company, waar hij tot 2000 één van de sterdansers was. But none of it does anything to solve the mystery.

The graduates from the ArTEZ Academy of Theatre have taken the successful 1940s television drama Blue Remembered Hills as a base for their final joint performance. With Sarah Moeremans as its director, this performance slowly evolves into a horrific thriller.

The children’s unsullied games end up as a fierce battle for power, and their children’s world will never be the same. Zeven kinderen spelen onschuldig in de bossen, totdat wreedheid het spel overneemt. De afstudeer ders van de ArTEZ Toneel school kozen het succes volle televisiedrama Blue Remembered Hills uit de

jaren veertig als basis voor hun laatste gezamenlijke voorstelling. Met Sarah Moeremans als regisseuse ontspint deze voorstelling zich tot een gruwelijke thriller. Het onverdorven spel van de kinderen ein digt in een hevige onder linge machtstrijd waarna hun kinderwereld nooit meer dezelfde zal zijn.

When it turns out they cannot find the perfect harmony, the realisation sets in that irregularity, unpredictability, and imperfection have a certain appeal as well, and may even offer more excitement. The inspiration for this graduation project came from the orchestral piece Harmonielehre by the American composer John Adams. Just as in this performance, his music at first creates the im-

pression that harmony is within reach, only to find it withdrawing again as quick as lightning. Acht mimespelers streven naar samenhang en even wicht. Celibaat takes the viewer along on a poetic journey. Thundering past cinemas and cremations, we pass the stations of love and loneliness. The solo recounts the run of life and how it will inevitably end in death.

Celibaat neemt de toeschouwer op een poëtische reis. Voorbijdenderend aan cinema’s en crematies, passeren we stations van liefde en eenzaamheid. De solo verhaalt over de loop die het leven neemt en die onvermijdelijk uitmondt in de dood.

A Celebration is an invitation to come celebrate the things we have in common, the bizarre, and ourselves.

The thing an alcoholic overcomes when he explains his problem. The thing that keeps a lesbian daughter from introducing her lover at home. The thing an actor leaves behind as he enters the stage. Shame. Animals do not know it; people struggle with it. Darwin wrote an extensive chapter on it in 1872. Nearly a hundred and forty years

later, we still blush with shame. Wat Adam en Eva voelden toen ze van de verboden vrucht aten. Wat een alco holist overwint als hij zijn probleem uitlegt. Wat een lesbische dochter weer houdt haar lief mee naar

huis te nemen. Wat een acteur loslaat als hij op de scène stapt. Schaamte. Dieren kennen het niet, mensen worstelen ermee. Darwin schreef er in 1872 een uitgebreid hoofdstuk over. Bijna honderdveertig jaar later blozen we nog steeds van schaamte.

If you had no obligations? What would you fantasise about? We all feel the urge once in a while to break free from the daily grind. In search of stimulus, in search of adventure, in search of taming the restlessness inside. Wacht! is a funny performance for anyone who has ever dreamed of doing things differently.

Wat zou je doen als je denkt dat niemand kijkt? Als je geen verplichtingen hebt? Waar fantaseer je over? Iedereen voelt af en toe het verlangen los te breken uit de dagelijkse sleur. Op zoek naar prik kels, op zoek naar avon tuur, om de onrust in je te temmen. Wacht! is een humoristische voorstelling voor iedereen die er wel eens van droomt het hele maal anders te doen.

Grofgebekt maar niet te let terlijk is een muzikale per formance over Blieblebloe. Met liedjes en teksten zien we op ludieke wijze de zoektocht naar het grote zelf. Kunnen mensen zich opnieuw uitvinden? De

voorstelling gaat over over zicht, over beperkingen, over wel of niet aanpas sen, over het spelen met de gedachte er een eind aan te maken. Een staaltje existentialisme, maar dan voor alle leeftijden.

Faura en Mor Shani. Hoe wel de selectie nu nog niet bekend is staat The Makers Present garant voor een avondje nieuw talent ont dekken. Jonge, originele geesten laten hun visie op de danskunst zien en dat kan heel wat verrassende resultaten opleveren. In den beginne was het woord. Als ieder van ons niet geboren was in een wereld waar altijd gespro ken werd, zou het zwijgen dan nooit verbroken zijn? We hebben jullie, we heb ben onszelf, we hebben tekst. Daar gaan we het vandaag mee doen. In vijf minuten nemen we jullie mee op een theatrale trein reis langs struikelwoorden en onvermogen. Langs oude mensen met handen in hun schoot. Langs de po ëtische kracht van vuilnis.

John: He always comes home for dinner; he has done for 25 years. Olivia: He mustn’t think he can make a habit of this. In The Orange Dream we watch two people as they try to redefine their relationship over and over. The death of their

son forces them to constantly keep moving. They shift, puzzle and arrange themselves in an attempt to come closer. John: Hij komt altijd thuis voor het eten, al 25 jaar. Olivia: Hij moet dit niet als een gewoonte gaan zien.

In The Orange Dream zien we twee mensen die steeds opnieuw proberen zich tot elkaar te verhouden. De dood van hun zoon dwingt hen tot continue beweging. Ze schuiven, puzzelen en rangschikken zichzelf in een poging nader tot el kaar te komen.

JUNE 24th, Rozentheater grote zaal, 16.30 Kom Op! Ga Af! is a cheerful glam rock musical about Cas Rieventine, a suicidal musician, flirting with death as he plays the blues around smoke-filled bars. The dusky pub is replaced with a brightly lit intensive care unit. After a failed suicide attempt, Cas ends up a total paralytic at the hospital, where festive glam rock sets the tone. Chief physician Gabriël tries as hard as he can to keep him alive.

Kom Op! Ga Af! is een vrolijke glamrock-musical over Cas Rieventine, een suïcidale muzikant. In ro kerige kroegen speelt hij de blues en flirt met de dood. De donkere kroeg maakt plaats voor een helverlichte intensivecareafdeling. Na een mislukte zelfmoordpo ging belandt Cas volledig verlamd in het ziekenhuis, waar feestelijke glamrock de toon zet. Hoofdarts Ga briël doet zijn uiterste best om hem in leven te houden.

Four people are in an empty space. Each round, one of them will have to die. Luckily, you get to vote! In true Idols style, the audience decides who goes on into the next round and who does not. Het stuk

dat je gezien had moeten hebben (The play you should have seen) is about the will to survive and the need to stand out. In short: people at their nastiest: manipulative, backstabbing, and ruthless.

Vier mensen bevinden zich in een lege ruimte. Elke ronde zal één van hen moe ten sterven. Gelukkig heeft u een stem! Het publiek mag à la Idols bepalen wie er naar de volgende ronde mag en wie niet. Het stuk dat je gezien had moeten hebben gaat over de wil tot overleven en de noodzaak om op te vallen. Kortom, de mens op zijn lelijkst: ma nipulatief, achterbaks en nietsontziend.

They were the most powerful people on earth but have fallen into the deepest pit of hell. Lust, love and crime are the things that

drive them. Their conceit creates a vicious circle in which everything goes on forever, like in the story of Sisyphus. Door de wil van de hek sen zitten Macbeth en zijn vrouw al eeuwen in een achtbaan waarin pieken en dalen worden bereikt.

In Are you there? the audience is introduced to a couple. A couple that is alone. Or, is it? A rustling behind the curtain and the sound of heavy breathing would suggest otherwise. Who is looking in through the window? Is anyone there? This performance explores the grey area between the

Herinnert zich dat hij bang was voor zijn vader. Zijn vader was een lange, sterke man en hij een klein skelet, onzeker, op blote voeten in de wereld. Maar waar is iedereen, waar is zijn vriendin? Hij bevindt zich in een lege kamer vol vuil, tranen, bloed, verne dering, liefde, passie en dood. Langzaam begint hij het leven te snappen nu hij ervoor zou willen sterven.

New on the ITs Festival Amsterdam: the ITs Playwriting Award! This award will be handed out to the the best, new Dutch play written by one of the graduating writers or directors of an ITs performance. The jury will consist of Johan Doesburg (director), Erik Whien (actor/director) and Ger Thijs (playwright). Together they will read all the scripts and announce the winner on the 30th of June!

In August 2010 Codarts, University for the Arts in Rotterdam is starting the Master New Music Theatre. It is a two-year full-time programme for performers and creators focusing on multidisciplinary working and thinking; where you learn to move flexibly in the crossover. A course for musicians, creators, composers, actors, writers, designers and sound designers, among others. Music is the common denominator in this programme.
