Why automate the fastening process? Migrating the fabrication process offsite and performing it under factory conditions is a response to the need to control and reduce costs, whilst also leading to quality improvements that enhance the marketability of the end product.

Quality Eurocode 5 requires tighter manufacturing controls for timber frame buildings which automation provides, and subsequently improves quality and consistency. Toolmatic can position fasteners precisely to achieve optimum design loads and cost efficiency. More accurate placement and embedment of fasteners improves the appearance of finish applications like exterior cladding and plasterboard sheathing. Similar benefits can be obtained in the manufacture of packing cases, furniture, sheds and fences. Health & safety Automated manufacturing processes reduce the risk of industrial accidents, RSI and manual lifting injuries. The new 800 series Toolmatics with “Pusher” technology operates much more quietly providing an improved working environment.

PART OF AN AUTOMATED MANUFACTURING LINE

Labour turnover Automation reduces manning levels by replacing simple repetitive tasks with more satisfying machine control operations, reducing staff retention problems. Space Utilisation Automation provides the opportunity to optimise production processes and factory routing. Higher productivity Automation improves productivity, measurable both per employee and per factory square metre. Links to software such as hsbCAD reduces setup time.

Toolmatic tools are designed specifically for automation with only one air feed and one power line to attach. This simplifies attachment and eliminates the mess of wires required for modified hand tools. Toolmatic modular construction allows us to create a solution geared to the precise requirements of each production line, from a wide range of optional features and fastener systems. This maximises productivity, whilst eliminating the cost of unnecessary features. Toolmatic tools re-cycle exhaust air to cool the bumper (1) 1 . This enables faster fastening rates and reduces maintenance requirements. Toolmatic tools feature large air reservoirs to prevent choking at high fastening rates. This prevents miss-fires or inconsistent embedment depths. Higher fastening rates reduces the number of tools required per station / bridge. Toolmatic pistons are PTFE/copper alloy sealed, requiring no lubrication and ensuring clean operation (2) 2 . This eliminates maintenance downtime, reduces wear & tear and avoids damage. Toolmatic tools can be equipped with onboard magazine and miss-fire sensors monitoring the nailing process. These enable our customers to guarantee high quality and consistency, eliminating reworking or rejection of finished product. All mechanical characteristics are designed to extend service intervals. Increasing productivity and reducing maintenance costs. Toolmatic tools are supplied “ready to mount”, with appropriate mounting brackets 3 . No unnecessary time or cost is wasted. Toolmatic solutions include the ability to fire from all angles, including upside down. Our tools can therefore be designed round the production process rather than re-engineering the line to suit the tool.

TOOLMATIC | AUTOMATED FASTENING SYSTEMS

Toolmatic design & development In 2004 ITW implemented a dedicated unit in Barsbuttel, near Hamburg, Germany, to design and manufacture automated fastening systems, leveraging the many years of experience accumulated by Paslode, Duo-Fast, Haubold and Kartro in this field. This encompasses the development of the quiet, controlled “Pusher” fastening technology from Kartro and the “Module III” from Haubold which can drive staples up to 150mm in length.

Optimised design Toolmatic tools are specifically designed from the outset to be incorporated in automated production lines of all leading machine builders. This provides optimal performance, little to no downtime for reloading, fast interchanging of tools and more. However, we recognise that on some low volume production lines, a modified hand held tool can still provide a satisfactory automation solution, so we continue to offer such tools in our range. Modular system Our Toolmatic equipment is developed in a modular form. The range of five core pneumatic power units can be teamed with seven loading mechanisms, providing many options to suit a variety of applications. The power unit range can drive the following fasteners: & Nails collated on Duo-Fast 0° plastic coils & Nails collated on Paslode PL (Paper Laminated) tape & Nails collated on wire welded coils & Corrugated fasteners & Light, medium and heavy gauge staples & Brads / finish nails and headless pins

OUR AUTOMATED LATHE AT BARSBUTTEL, GERMANY

This approach makes Toolmatic suitable for all manner of applications from packaging, furniture & pallet making to timber frame manufacturing - even incorporating robot magazine replenishment for very high volume lines. Research & development Our overall objective is to fully understand the requirements of each production line, working with both machine builder and the client to find the best solution. We believe that we achieve this with our dedicated Toolmatic design and manufacturing unit which can tailor tools to suit specific fastening stations.

New “Pusher technology ITW have carried out extensive research and development to improve pneumatic fastening. The resulting nail pusher fastening technology provides: & Precise depth control of fastening to 0.1mm & A massive reduction in workplace noise levels & Improved air tightness for better thermal performance

Noise reduction Operational sound volume is massively reduced, providing a significant improvement to the health and safety of the working environment. Improved thermal performance The two step fastening process first clamps the material, then the piston pushes the fastener home, helping to provide an air-tight panel and therefore improved thermal performance.

Q

Precision depth control The Toolmatic Pusher incorporates a metal wedge which pushes the tool housing down to pinch the material together with the tool nose piece before the fastener is driven to exactly the required depth. This controlled penetration ensures that the technical performance of the fastener meets the design specification.

Automated nailers overview Nails for Toolmatic tools are available in three different collation types - Plastic coil, PL (paper laminated) tape, and wire weld coil. This page outlines the benefits of each system. 1. Plastic coil nailing system Toolmatic tools for this system (CT550 and CT850) are normally supplied with vertically oriented, space saving magazines which provide more flexibility in nail positioning. The unique Duo-Fast 0° plastic coil collation is the safest, cleanest and most productive nailing system available. In-line production and quality control are key features of ITW’s European manufacturing of these fasteners, to ensure the consistent high performance that minimises line downtime and expensive remedial work. This method of collation ensures that corrosion protection is not damaged by any violent process (like welding). Independent salt spray tests show the nails can last 15 times longer before showing signs of rust compared to the wire welded equivalent. When using wire-welded coil nails, shards of welding wire can fly loose causing injury to the operator or be trapped under the nail head, potentially tearing sheeting material. The collation process is equally suitable for hot dip galvanised and stainless steel nails, again without damaging their corrosion resistance. The precision moulded plastic tape collation transports extremely well with no production halts due to misaligned nails as is often the case with wire welded coils.

2. PL tape strip nailing system The SP560 Toolmatic is the only automated nailing system with a continuous feed hopper system, where the magazine can be replenished without stopping the line.

The paper laminated (PL) tape collated nail strip will not break when dropped and will not deteriorate in wet weather. No collation waste is generated with this system. PL-tape collation is driven into wood to reduce flagging. Nails now have the unique Paslode RounDrive head which combines the aesthetic benefit of a full round head with a tight collation system which ensures the stability of the strip and therefore eliminates jamming risk. In-line production and quality control are key features of our European manufacturing of these fasteners to ensure the consistent high performance that minimises line downtime and expensive remedial work. As with the Duo-Fast 0° plastic coil, we offer a range of nails with hot dip galvanised coating or manufactured in stainless steel A2 or even A4 to provide the best levels of corrosion resistance, advisable for instance when fastening red cedar cladding. 3. Wire weld coil nailing system In those applications where appearance and an effective anti-corrosion performance are not such high priority, our welded-wire coil collated nail system offers an alternative to the Duo-Fast plastic coil collated nail system.

Automated pinners & bradders overview Toolmatic pin nailers are now in operation complete with robot stations, either where the volume of nailing is such that manual replenishment would seriously reduce productivity or where a smaller magazine is required on the tool to access tight spaces and autonomy is achieved by the tool frequently returning to a roboticised re-load station. Finish nails / brads and headless pins are predominantly used for industrial joinery in situations where the aesthetics of the fixing finish is important. Brads are available from stock in both 16 and 18 gauge wire, in lengths ranging from 13 to 64mm, either galvanised or stainless steel (A2 and A4). Toolmatic tools to fix heavier duty 14 gauge brads are also possible. Brads are manufactured with small head sizes to minimise any adverse decorative effect. For the most discreet fastening we also offer headless pins.

Automated staplers overview When Haubold joined ITW in 2007 they brought with them over 100 years of experience in staple and stapler development. Combined with Toolmatic technology, this provides automation solutions for a very wide range of fastening tasks. In mainland Europe staplers are even used for applications where nails are traditionally used in the UK, including framing and cladding.

The Toolmatic programme fastens staples from 4mm to 150mm long, with crown widths from 5.8mm to 27mm, including fine wire 20 and 22 gauge staples for fixing breather paper, foils and linings to 14 gauge heavy staples up to 150mm long for fastening insulation and even structural applications. Galvanised and A2 stainless steel staples are available from stock, whilst we can also offer to special order 1.4529 grade ultra corrosion resistant stainless staples for extreme conditions.
