Creatives & WorkSpaces

Creatives and their working spaces, Dublin 2014. Nowadays people are becoming products of consumption and so is the artist and creative. The project is an attempt to portray the creative as a consumption item in a sneak peek format. Ten creatives and workspaces were chosen. The project collects a set of three images per creative. The artwork is presented in separate prints that mix text and image. The text was written by Eddie Lennon addressing questions such as, What does creativity mean to you? What is a creative space? When/how does a creative process start? List of Creatives: Abner Brown, Ania Niepsuj, Aoife Dooley, Eddie Lennon, Jaime FoodFiesta, Hazel Coonagh, James Leahy, Keith Burke, Kristiana Kendzirova and Sarah Bracken.

To create is to impose some order, some benevolent shape, on the world-however limited, however modest, however fleeting the equilibrium. For me, it is the assertion of difference, a vital cry of protest in the face of crushing sameness. To create is to say: “I’m different. You don’t believe me? Here’s the proof.” My dictionary rather vaguely defines “creative” as “relating to or involving the use of the imagination or original ideas to create something.” A simpler, more focused definition might be: taking the time to discover, and to be, yourself. If you’re lucky, there will come a day when you can’t bear to be anything else. Eddie Lennon

The creative effort is a perpetual tug-of-war between the conscious and the unconscious; the critical and the creative. The unconscious mind is a river of creativity. The challenge is to learn to let it flow, while ignoring the noises of hesitation and self-doubt. The twin energies of creativity and selfcriticism can knock each other out. But beauty is a tonic for which the soul will fight. And persistence pays. The more you create, the more you attain a dreamy lucidity, a concentrated nonchalance. Your mind becomes a train station for ideas. And every now and then a little jewel arrives at the platform. Eddie Lennon

A Creative Space is like the old advertising slogan for Martini: “anytime, anyplace, anywhere. As long as you are comfortable and your mind is quiet, you are in the right place to create. The trick is not to find the right physical space in which to create, as such; it is to find the right psychological space. In the creative context, space is the lack of trivia and other mental clutter. Space is room to breathe, room to think. When you start off with an empty head, slow down, and be calm, you are already in a creative space, no matter where you are. Eddie Lennon

A creative tool first of all, and most of all, it’s about persistence. Contrary to how it is sometimes portrayed, creativity is not a suitable mood you happen to find yourself in, or some kind of bolt from the blue. It’s about finding your own, unique voice by constant effort, and never giving up. Ideas will flow no matter what mood you’re in. The creative consciousness is always on. Ultimately, creativity is a habit. Like many other things, it’s about focus. So turn off the TV, forget about Facebook, read a beautiful book, go to a gallery, take a long walk. Let your imagination, and determination, do the rest. Eddie Lennon

This Images take me by surprise, give me a gentle jolt. The work I do―writing, rewriting and editing― is rarely about the visual. It’s about words. So to see myself, and my workplace, photographed, is strange. Looking at them, I feel like a voyeur in my own living room! The other thing is that my work routine is something that’s entirely observed from my own point of view―it’s a completely subjective experience. For most of the day, I’m alone, and no-one else sees me work. It therefore feels a little strange to suddenly see my creative process, this entirely solitary endeavour, observed. Eddie Lennon
