Exam Day Tips!
On the day of the exam - Read the instructions and choices VERY CAREFULLY. Do exactly as the instructions say (eg. Answer to two decimal places: 20.60). If you do not understand what is being asked, look at command line & ribbon for hints. Test has 35 Questions - Pass Mark is 28. Time is 2 hours = 3 mins per question. These tests are very specific on its steps and terminology. Do exactly what is says. Take your time. Don't rush the question, and use the full 2 hour time allocation!
User Interface The test will ask you to identify specific areas of the user interface. Eg. Where is the View Control bar Located? This is completed with a screen shot of the interface, and a courser click to identify the area. A good place to review the interface is in the Revit Help. Collaboration Use the Copy Monitor to Copy walls from a linked file into the current file. Make sure you understand the process of copying/monitoring objects (specifically walls for the test). Understand the method of specifying mapping Original Types to New Types. You will need to select Finish on the Options Bar before you select Finish on the main Ribbon to complete the Copy-Monitor exercise. See image below. Link: Copy Monitor.
After you have ‘copy-monitored’ the elements (eg. walls/columns) – You may be asked to select the copied elements and give the total volume (m3).

Documentation Title Sheet: Test may ask what tool is used to place a view on a sheet in a specific location. Answer: Guide Grid. Link: Guide Grid. Filled Regions: Create a filled Region, and give the area of the filled region. Use dimensions to check your filled region matches the one in the exam. Link: Filled Region Area. Detail Components: Know why you would use a Detail or a Repeating Detail. Answer: To place pre-drawn 2D elements for annotation. Colour Legends: Know how to place, and edit a colour scheme. Also note the place to edit the colour scheme that is selected is the "Edit Scheme" button that is on the Contextual Tab. This question can be covered by asking you to add a Legend and a specific colour scheme. Then give the colour of the specified room. You may also be asked to select the legend and click the "Edit Scheme" button on the ________. (Contextual Tab). Knowing the specific terminology is important. Link: Colour Legend. Dimension Strings: Use a dimension string to equally space grid lines. (Do not move the grids to be equal, you will be selecting the middle grid line, and using the "EQ" button on the dimension. Then go to Properties and select Value – This changes the ‘EQ’ sign to actual numerical dimensions. Give new dimension of grid-line spacing. Phases: You may be asked what the Phase Filter controls. Answer: Visibility overrides based on phase. Link: Phase Filters. Elements Curtain wall: The exam may ask you to change the Justification of the Horizontal & Vertical Grid from "Beginning" to "End" or "Center". Do this by selecting the curtain wall, go to Properties Palette to change Justifications. After the change, it may ask you to select a specific panel in the curtain wall, and give the new area/height of that panel. Link: Curtain Walls.

New Family Type: Change a door type from one dimension to another. Move that door a specified distance (eg. 200) from a wall. Give the new dimension from the door edge to a specified point. Stacked Walls: Add a new wall with specific dimension to a stacked wall. Then give the new volume of a specific material based on a schedule that was already created (or you may be asked to create this schedule to calculate the values). Link: Stacked Walls. Create Compound Walls: Change a wall layer from one thickness to another. Assign a different material to that layer. Give the new volume of that material. System/Component Families: Know the difference between Revit Families. Link: Revit Families.
Families Access Review Warnings: You may be asked about the difference between a Warning and an Error. Answer: Warnings can be dismissed - Errors cannot. Family Creation Procedure: You may be asked when/where do you change a families category. Answer: Within the Family Editor. Work with families: Edit a family: change the dimension of a model or symbolic line in the family (was not using parameters for that object). Load back into project. Give new dimension from line to specified point. Link: Family Symbolic Lines. Modelling Adding Dimensions: You will do this a lot in many questions. Know the different types. Link: Dimensions. Attach walls to roof: You may be asked to attach a wall to a roof, then give the new volume of the wall. Make sure you use the contextual tool to attach to a roof. Many people make the mistake of setting the top constraint to the roof level. This is not correct. Link: Attach Wall to Roof. Change Floor/Ceiling/Roof: You may be asked "How do you change a generic floor to a wood joist floor?" Answer: Select the floor and change its Type. Create Building Pad: You may be asked, What is needed to create a building pad? Answer: Toposurface. Create a stair: Make sure you can create a "stair by component". You may be shown a reference image of a L shaped stair with a landing, and you may be asked to recreate this stair, and give a dimension from one part of the stair to an adjacent wall. Create Floors/Ceilings/Roofs: Create a ceiling in a specific room. Then give the perimeter of that new ceiling. Create a floor between specified grid lines. Give area. Floors: There may be a question that asks you to match floor graphics to the appropriate image. You will have to change a floor to the different types to see what they look like.

Define floors for a mass: Create floors from a mass using specified levels. Select a floor on a specified level, and give a specified property. (eg. area). Edit Material: Change the material of a specified wall. Pick the colour that is most like the colour of the new material. Edit Room aware Family: Edit a family. Change the Room Calculation Point to be on a specific side of the object. Reload. Give the room number that is listed in the schedule for that object. (Know how to turn on the Room Calculation Point if you do not). Link: Changing Room Calculation Point. Toposurface: Create a Toposurface from a CAD import. You will be asked to choose specific layers during creating Toposurface. Link: Create Toposurface from CAD. Railings: Model a railing with an offset from a wall edge. Give the railings length.
Views Duplicate View: Duplicate an elevation view - type in the word that is now Visible. (Be sure to follow the directions EXACTLY). Schedule: Create a door schedule, test will give you specifics know how to filter, group, sort and calculate totals. Give a total value from that schedule. Legend: You may be asked what makes a Legend different than all other views. Answer: It can be placed on multiple sheets. Define Element Properties in a schedule: Understand Schedules and how to edit them. This may have been covered by the Schedule question above. Manage View Positions: Know what the use of the Guide Grid is: Guide grids help arrange views so that they appear in the same location from sheet to sheet. Organize and Sort Items in a schedule: Again, know how to sort, filter, edit schedules. Use Levels: You may be asked to create floors from masses. Rooms Add Room Tags to all rooms, use Room Tag with Area. Change Room Area Computations from "at wall finish" (Default) to "at wall center". Building Elements are used to create a building design. There are 5 classes of building elements: Host, Component, Datum, Annotation and View.
Building Elements fall into 3 Categories: Model, View and Annotation.
Revit Elements are separated into 3 different types of Elements: Model, Datum and View-Specific.
Users should be able to understand the difference between a hosted and non-hosted component. A hosted component is a component that must be placed or constrained to another element. Eg. a door or window is hosted by a wall. You should be able to identify what components can be hosted by which elements. Walls are non-hosted. Whether or not a component is hosted is defined by the template used for creating the component. A Wall, Floor, Ceiling or Face can be a host.
Some components are level-based, such as furniture, site components, plumbing fixtures, casework, roofs and walls. When you insert a level-based component, it is constrained to that level and can only be moved within that infinite plane. Should be familiar with how to use Element and Type Properties of components in order to locate and modify information.
There are 3 kinds of families in Revit Architecture: o

Loadable Families

In-Place Families
System Families are: walls, ceilings, stairs, floors etc. These are families that can only be created by using an existing family, duplicating, and redefining. These families are loaded into a project using a project template.
Revit allows you to assign OmniClass numbers to Revit loadable families for use in schedules. There may be a question in the exam where you will need to identify or assign the OmniClass number in a family. See workflow below.

Room Calculation Points are used to make loadable families “room aware.” Once you enable the room calculation point, the family will display the correct room in the project schedule. There may be a question in the exam where you will be asked to adjust the room calculation point on a loadable family. See workflow below.

Legends Legends provide a pictorial representation of architectural and building elements along with descriptive text. Legends are considered views, like schedules. Typical Legends include:
Annotation Legend. Displays sheet annotations such as section heads, level markers, spot elevation marks, elevation symbols, keynote symbol, revision tag, element tags, and other symbols that do not represent model objects. Each symbol has an associated piece of descriptive text. All symbols are shown at printed size.
Model Symbol Legend. Displays symbolic representations of model objects with some descriptive text. Typical elements are electrical fixtures, plumbing fixtures, mechanical equipment, and site objects.
Line Styles Legend. Displays a line in a selected line style and text identifying what that line style represents on drawings. Examples include fire rating lines, property lines, setback lines, electric wiring, plumbing, utilities, and center lines.
Materials Legend. Displays a sample of a cut or surface pattern and text identifying the material associated with that pattern.
Phasing. Shows a section of wall drawn with a selected graphic override and identifying text.
Legends can be added to multiple sheets. Any elements that can be placed in drafting views, such as detail lines, text, dimensions, and filled regions, can be placed in a legend. Legend views are unique to each project, and therefore cannot be transferred from one project to another. You can use legend views as graphical palettes, which means that you can select a component in a legend view and use the Create Similar or Match Type tools to place the component in another view. Note: A component that is placed in a legend does not count as an additional instance of the component in the building model and thus is not added to the number of instances of that component listed on a schedule.
