Abby Williams has an eye on her future.

Her academic advisor, Colin Ashe, has been a huge help. He made sure she took the right classes, and he worked with her on a research project—both of which will enhance her academic résumé. Abby has also done two internships and has joined the American Medical Student Association to get even more immersed in her future career.

Her plan to become an optometrist (eye doctor) is still a few years away, because she will have to attend optometry school, but she is spending her IUP career lining things up so her dreams become reality. To become an optometrist, she will take a lot of chemistry classes, so having chemistry as her major now will set her up for success later.

“When you come to college, you will be challenged, and you will grow and develop into a different person,” she said. “Your opinions may change, or you may decide that you want to pursue a different career path. This is all a part of becoming the person you are meant to be. Embrace these changes. Try new things and jump at new opportunities!”

BRIANNA ADKINS ’22

She planned to major in art education so she could become a teacher. But, when she started taking dance classes as electives, she learned that she could give herself even more avenues for success by making it a double major. She’s now on her way to any number of careers in art or dance.

“I’ve wanted to be a teacher since I was young,” she said. “While these majors both lead down this path, they have also opened me up to nontraditional education options to use my degree—like community arts programs or work in museums.”

“I had never lived far from home until I lived thousands of miles away, and I think it was the perfect place for me,” she said. “Florence is teeming with art, rich with history, and beautifully walkable—just a simple walk to class was inspirational and breathtaking. I want to continue to travel once I graduate and maybe even live in Florence again for some time, as my soul has never felt more exuberant and at peace.”

Hometown: Indiana, PA

It wasn’t until she got to IUP that Brianna Adkins fully understood that she could make a career out of her hobby.

While someday she hopes to make an impression on the students she might be teaching, Brianna had an eye-opening experience through IUP when she spent a semester studying abroad in Florence, Italy. She knows the life-changing experience will help her as she enters a diverse working world.
