YOUR ACADEMIC JOURNEY
You want a university education because you are curious. Because you want to find answers to the big questions. Because you want to have an interesting career. Because you know you can. We know that you can do it, too. And, we’ll challenge you to be your best. You might be an honors student, explorer, researcher, or all of the above. Find your passion in this book or go straight to the centerfold for our majors list. No matter your path, always remember that we’re here to help you.
YOUR SCIENCE IS SHOWING Science is exciting. It’s useful. It’s global.
Here, you can study the stars in the planetarium, water flow in the flume lab, or the history of a rock with the scanning electron microscope (scientists from other universities come to IUP to use ours).
You aren’t confined to four walls. If you’re a biologist, you might spend time in nearby state parks tracking wildlife or travel with your professor on research trips to places like South Africa or Honduras.
IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE? If you’ve set your sights on becoming a physician, you’ll likely enroll in our pre-med program and have access to three cooperative agreements—with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Jefferson Medical College, or Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Pre-veterinary majors have similar access.
IUP alumni—some of whom are at the top of their professions— have financially supported an awesome new facility. The Kopchick College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics will move into its new home in 2023.
YOU MEAN BUSINESS
Your goal might be to work on Wall Street.
You might want to use accounting to track crime. Or, maybe you want to study entrepreneurship to open your own business. Master the art and science of managing human resources, or become an expert in moving products, ingredients, and equipment around the world by studying supply chain management. You’ll experience a real financial trading room, and you’ll have plenty of networking opportunities, too, like the annual Business Day. Everyone in the Eberly College of Business and Information Technology participates, including alumni, who return to campus to share their knowledge.
GET CONNECTED If you qualify for the Business Honors Program, you can take advantage of academic and networking trips as close as New York and as far away as India.
BE A DIFFERENT KIND OF MANAGER If you love sports or travel and leisure but still want to apply best business practices, consider majoring in sport administration, fashion merchandising, or hospitality management.
THE ARTS ARE IN YOUR HEART Dance, sing, act, design.
If you opt for a theatre, music, dance, or art major, you might design and build furniture in the Wood Center, paint, make jewelry, perform on stage, or design and build the sets for Theater-by-the-Grove. If you are a musician, you might travel to Europe to perform with an ensemble or provide music lessons through the Community Music School. Theatre majors get to do real improv by acting as patients in IUP’s nursing simulation labs. Talk about hands-on training for future actors and nurses! Even if you aren’t majoring in an arts-related field, you still can be an artist.
ENHANCE YOUR ARTISTIC REPERTOIRE
Add a communications media minor to your résumé, and pair up your artistic talent with knowledge of video production. Or, add a certificate program to your mix, and get credentials in audio production or popular music.
YOUR FUTURE IS IN HEALTH AND HUMAN CARE At IUP, you’ll find many ways to improve the human condition.
Majors specific to health care, like nursing and respiratory care, are one way, but there are more. If you want to take care of larger communities, consider one of four tracks in the Public Health program. Or, if you want to work with people to improve their mental or physical health, consider psychology, dietetics, or exercise science. The important thing here is that you’ll find all the right blends of sciences and arts, mixed with the ability to double major or choose minor courses of study that will broaden your perspective. You can do it your way.
GET THERE FROM HERE
Physician assistant, pharmacist, audiologist, optometrist, dentist, physical therapist, podiatrist, chiropractor—yep, you can do that at IUP, too. We have agreements with Salus University, Chatham University, Temple University, and others to admit IUP’s qualifying students. Ask us for details.
YOU CAN TEACH AND COMMUNICATE Communicators inform and influence. Teachers, broadcasters, social media strategists, and journalists—you name it. Our graduates are living it. If you opt for teaching, you’ll have professors to guide you to your teaching certification. If you choose a communications program—like Communications Media or Journalism and Public Relations—prepare to get busy. You’ll want to sign on with IUP-TV, get involved with the Center for Media Production and Research, or take a position with the Penn, IUP’s student newspaper.
IN THE CLINIC
EYES ON THE PRIZE
Four alumnae have earned journalism’s top honor—the Pulitzer Prize—recognizing their news judgment and courage to inform the public of the truth.
IUP’s speech-language pathology majors gain extra experience in the Speech and Hearing Clinic, which provides testing services to the public, including school-age children.
PEOPLE ARE YOUR PASSION Don’t let anyone tell you that social sciences and humanities fields— sometimes also known as liberal arts—are too soft for the job market. It’s not
true. Employers everywhere are seeking workers who know how to write, interact with people of all backgrounds, and think on their feet.
Anything you study in the social sciences and humanities disciplines will give you a wellrounded perspective. English and foreign languages focus on linguistics and culture. Anthropology, sociology, history, and religious studies provide perspective about people and their way of life.
Political science and economics look at the policies and factors that change the human condition, while philosophy considers the limits of human knowledge. Geography and regional planning consider the space and environmental and economic factors that affect population.
DIG IN THE DIRT
Anthropology majors can dig and discover with IUP Archaeological Services, which is contacted when construction uncovers artifacts and signs of ancient inhabitants. And, over the years, history majors have traveled to Cyprus to uncover artifacts through the Pyla-Koutsopetria Archaeological Project.
Our alumni take their skills around the world, leading, coaching, discovering, and sharing their vision. We can’t wait to see where your future takes you. MAJORS ■

THE POWER OF A LIBRARY
No college campus is complete without a library, and we’re especially proud of ours. It’s not just full of books (although we do have almost 500,000). It’s also the perfect spot to study, get some tutoring, or have a cup of coffee. And if you just need to do some research from your room or home, our online resources give you access to thousands of online journals and academic databases.
Love data science and analytics? This is the program for you.

4+1=CREDENTIALS
Among the majors you’ll consider, nine include freshman admission to grad school. If you enroll in the BA in Criminology program, you might be admitted also to the MA in Criminology program. Other freshmanadmission options include Education, Business, Sport Science, English, and Mathematics. If you’re not enrolled in a 4+1 program but still have your sights on grad school, you can gain early admission to 27 master’s level programs starting the spring of your junior year.
THE RESEARCHERS
YOU LIKE TO FIND SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS Help your professor on a funded research project or pursue your own. Our Undergraduate Research office will help. Present your research at our annual Scholars Forum. Travel with your professor to present your findings at professional conferences. Or, spend five weeks on campus with a faculty mentor in the Research Experiences for Summer Scholars program.
Discover new frog species in Honduras. Uncover 8,000-yearold artifacts just a few miles away from campus. Dig into the literary works that shaped modern science fiction. Research skills are valuable in every profession. At IUP, you can build those skills. Hey, the world is full of problems. You could be the person who solves them.
THE CAREER MINDED
FROM INTERNSHIP TO INTERESTING CAREER Some of the best learning experiences are outside the classroom.
As you work on your degree, you’ll take what you learn into the field with internship or clinical experiences. Internships and other before-yougraduate work experiences are a must! IUP students have interned at cool places like Tesla, IBM, and the Big Four accounting firms. They get practical experience at the local historical society or in Silicon Valley. Imagine what that looks like on a résumé. Your professors and the Career and Professional Development Center will direct you to great opportunities and will help you make the connections you need to take advantage of them. On average, 73 percent of our interns are offered full-time employment after they graduate.
DC CONNECTION
At IUP, you can take advantage of signature internships sponsored by the Washington Center. Imagine spending a semester in our country’s capital, working in a government-related position in economics, political science, communications, history, philosophy, or another field.
THE HONORS STUDENTS
YOU WANT TO ANSWER THE BIG QUESTIONS Immerse yourself in discussion and new topics in formal and informal settings. You’ll live with fellow Cook students—no matter your major. You’ll receive scholarship support and access to the Achievement Fund, which can defray the costs of internships, travel abroad, and more.
EVEN MORE HONORS OPS
If the Cook Honors College isn’t for you, you can still distinguish yourself from the pack in one of IUP’s 70 honors tracks—Spanish, History, Psychology, Economics, Business, Asian Studies, and Biology, just to name a few.
THE EXPLORERS
YOU ARE STILL DECIDING ON YOUR FUTURE
Even the brightest students sometimes aren’t sure what, exactly, they want to become. Don’t think of it as a bad thing. Think of it as an opportunity to find your passion with all the resources you need to be certain. You can enroll at IUP as an explorer and access a network of faculty mentors who will help you figure that out. The best part is that you’ll stay on pace for graduation while you seek the major that suits you best.
YOU WON’T BE ALL ON YOUR OWN We really mean this.
IUP professors are proud of the fact that they care about your success. They’ll help you as much as they can, but they expect you to put in the work, too. You’ll also find librarians who will help you with research and tutors through the Academic Success Center and the Kathleen Jones White Writing Center. If you need it, you can find guidance through the Department for Disability Access and Advising or through the Labyrinth Center for those with autism spectrum disorders. Everyone at IUP wants you to become the best version of yourself.
EARLY CAREER PLANNING
To help your journey end on a high note, the Career and Professional Development Center wants to start working with you early—well before your senior year. The center will help you with exploration and preparation for either a career or graduate school, preparing your résumé, and more.
