YOUR LIFE AT IUP

Your college journey at IUP holds so many possibilities. We won’t kid you—it will be hard work. But it’s not all about classes. The key is to get involved with campus life. You’ll make friends, broaden your perspective, and have fun doing it, too. Start with two necessities: good food and a comfortable bed. Then, learn about all the options you’ll have outside the classroom.

LIVE IN STYLE Our modern residence halls have all the features you need to study, socialize, and make a home away from home. These six floor plans are available in all residence halls except Whitmyre, which is home to the Cook Honors College and has a more traditional college room setup.

Most suites are like mini apartments, complete with private bathrooms. But, this housing includes all the things living off campus doesn’t— Wi-Fi, cable, security, AC, and, best of all, your new best friends right next door.

LIVE AND LEARN

Getting involved in the Residence Hall Association is a great way to meet friends and build community. RHA members plan fun events for occasions like Halloween, sponsor movie nights, and act as advocates for all students. Every residence hall has its own RHA council.

This is where living and learning come together to give you more. Join one of more than 20 livinglearning communities, from Business to Social Justice. Live close to your classes, and hang out with classmates who have the same academic interests as you.

Additionally, you can choose one of two living-learning community certificate programs—either Global Scholarship or Scientific Communication—that will enhance your résumé. For four semesters, you’ll live among others in the programs and build new skills.

DINE YOUR WAY “What’s for dinner?” you ask. What isn’t?

You’ll find 15 places to eat on our campus. That includes an all-youcan-eat dining hall, multiple food courts across campus, and even snack options in some of our academic buildings.

Sushi to burgers, crepes to pasta, salads to comfort foods like meatloaf and baked chicken, and vegan dishes, too. And don’t forget gelato, made on site every day. If you have special dietary needs, our dietitian will work with you.

You’ll also have seven different options for meal plans, because we know not everyone eats on the same schedule. And, when you’re busy, you want to be able to grab and go.

OR GO UPTOWN

If you haven’t seen this yet, you’ll find that IUP’s campus is surrounded by all your favorites. Walk a few blocks to downtown (actually, we call it uptown), or cross the street to find pizza, Thai INSIDE SCOOP: noodles, subs, tacos, ice cream, Decades the Capitol pancakes, ago, coffee, and more. Restaurant on Philadelphia Street sold the Capitol Roll, an ooey-gooey cinnamon roll that generations of alumni still rave about. The restaurant is long gone, but over the years, local establishments have started duplicating this locally famous confection. See if you can find one when you have a chance to eat off campus.

FIND NEW FRIENDS Getting involved in campus life is like finding the jelly in a donut—it makes your experience that much better. It will help you find friends for a lifetime, build confidence, and hone your time management and collaboration skills, and it will make your overall college experience much more fulfilling.

But, before you get started, you’ll have to find opportunities. That’s where IUP Day and Winter WarmUp come in. At two different activities fairs at the beginning of each semester, you’ll learn about the hundreds of options to get involved with campus life and meet the people who want you to join their clubs and organizations.

HELP OTHERS

LEAD THE PACK

Help kids learn to read, run the food pantry, register new voters—doing good makes you feel good, helps you make new friends, and looks good on your résumé, too. Few things are more rewarding than helping others, and you’ll find a wide array of opportunities to volunteer your time for good at IUP and in the Indiana community.

Your hometown has a whole network of leaders. Your college community does, too—and you can lead from wherever you are. IUP leadership opportunities include Student Government Association, the Black Student League, Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Association, the Council on Spiritual and Religious Life, and more.

SET THE STAGE, AND BE THE BAND

The IUP Marching Band—known by some as the Legend—is open to all students and has spots for musicians and silk artists. The band goes on the road to many regional shows and serves as the IUP football team’s loudest fan base. Artists will also find opportunities with the pep band, in student-run plays, and more.

INSIDE SCOOP:

Stressed during finals? We’ve got you covered. Late-night pancakes and therapy dogs come to the rescue by giving you a chance to refuel and get some unconditional love.

STAY HEALTHY MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT At IUP, you’ll find help when you need it.

No problem is too big or too small. Our medical and counseling staffs at the Rhonda H. Luckey Center for Health and Well-Being are ready to help get you through the tough times.

We also have plenty of options for getting and staying physically fit—at the HUB fitness center, where you can use all types of equipment and take classes like spinning and yoga, or the Lepley pool in Zink Hall.

LOVE OUR TOWN Indiana is a small-size town you can call home.

You’ll find shops and restaurants and churches of almost every denomination on Philadelphia Street and the streets that surround campus. If you love the outdoors, you’ll love Indiana County. You can fish or rent kayaks or pontoons at Yellow Creek State Park, just a short distance from campus. The Hoodlebug Trail runs through IUP’s campus, and if you like to bike long distances, you can use it to connect with the Ghost Town Trail.

INSIDE SCOOP:

Before you pedal your bike too far, be sure to check out Co-op Park, run by IUP’s Student Cooperative Association. You can hike a beautiful trail, play disc golf, and enjoy nature at its finest.

ENTERTAIN YOUR BRAIN (AND DANCE, IF YOU WANT TO) Sometimes, performances connect directly to your academic work. Sometimes, they’re just for your own fulfillment or entertainment. You’ll find both at IUP. First, you need to know that our own College of Fine Arts brings a wide array of artistic talent to campus through the Lively Arts program. From Broadway shows like Rent and Finding Neverland to the sophisticated Pittsburgh Symphony.

INSIDE SCOOP:

Impress your parents, and tell them Billy Joel performed at IUP twice— in 1977 and again in 1996.

You also can enjoy—or sign up to help plan—acts sponsored by Static, the student programming board. In recent years, Eric Paslay, the Maine, Chance the Rapper, Mayday Parade, and Pete Davidson have performed on campus.

HOMECOMING It’s probably the biggest event of the year. For Homecoming, alumni of all eras return to Indiana to see the campus and meet up with old friends. Performances by big-name acts, the annual parade on Philadelphia Street, and the football game (with its marching band show and Homecoming Court persentations) offer plenty of fun for everyone.

INSIDE SCOOP:

Norm, our mascot, is named in honor of IUP’s original name. IUP opened in 1875 as Indiana Normal School. In those days, normal schools were places that trained high school graduates to be teachers. The term “normal” referred to the trend of preparing educators to teach the behavioral norms of the time. Hey, things have changed a lot since then!
