REVAMP
With profound interest in drawing and design, I am currently studying urban planning in HUST and have built up my solid theoretic and technological foundations for further study in landscape architecture area. Through the oversea education experience, I want to strengthen my professional knowledge in landscape to have a deeper understanding of this field and to apply what I learned in school into future design practice. I am willing to apply for landscape architecture program in University of Michigan, which is closely related with my undergraduate study. I believe that I can cultivate a global view in UMich as well as have my professionalism and all-round qualities improved there. My latest design project is the design of creative cultural community, aiming to solve the cultural heritage problem faced by residents and government. My approach is not to tear them down. Instead, creating interesting architectural and outdoor space for residents as well as visitors and renovating residence with historic value is the most practical. I am always convinced by the concept of transforming in a smooth way to improve the existing condition. Therefore, REVAMP is the topic of my portfolio. Not only a combination of space and function, landscape is a generator of emotion and memory. For me, designing as an observer, landscape architecture design is to look for common and uncommon problems in cities and environment and then revamp the existing condition to create some unexpected moments for our common life.

BRIDGE IN MOTION
CONSTRUCTING SITE, FLOWS, AND PHENOMINA PROJECT [LOCATION] BOSTON, UNITED STATES [ACADEMIC] DESIGN DISCOVERY 2018 AT HARVARD GSD [INSTRUCTOR] GIDEON FINCK [INDIVIDUAL WORK]
The Northern Avenue Bridge was constructed in 1908 spanning the active Fort Point Channel, then a major industrial transportation route. As constructed, it was an operable steel three-span, triple-barreled, Pratt-type through-truss bridge with a rim-bearing center span that swung open to allow for water traffic. The bridge was designed to carry horse-drawn and motorized truck use through the outside barrels, freight locomotive passage through the central barrel, and pedestrians on sidewalks cantilevered beyond the outside barrels. At the time, the bridge was constructed as an integral part of the development of South Boston as a maritime and industrial center for Boston and the region and continues to serve as a reminder of that part of the city's evolution. Currently in a state of severe disrepair, the bridge is closed to all traffic and is threatened with total loss. The Walsh administration is considering options for its reuse or replacement. My design is to give new life to this bridge in an interesting way; it does not stand still any more, instead, this one in motion can serve lots of useful purposes.
The History of Northern Avenue Bridge
1912
1908 The bridge was built in 1908, when horse and carriages were still in use.
In 1912, a firehouse was built on the bridge. It kept the northern harbor safe until 1948.
1999
1968 The entire building and the supporting piers under it toppled into the water.
Most elements below the bridge deck are corroded well beyond repair, so it was closed to vehicle traffic.
2014
2000 It began to be opertaed as a pedestrain bridge.
The bridge was closed after inspectors found that thirteen floor beams were unsafe for pedestrians.
To the present V a r i o u s redevelopment schemes have been proposed for the bridge.
Site Transportation Analysis
Coastal Flood Depth Analysis
Northern Avenue Bridge is the gateway to the Fort Point Channel, where there are many existing and proposed water taxi and ferries, which means it is important to make it allow boats go through again in this area.
After analyzing the coastal fllod depth, it is clear to know that the Fan Pier Park will be mostly overwhelmed by the flood, and Rose Kennedy Greenway will aslo be influenced. Therefore, the Northern Avenue Bridge connecting those two parks is necessary to be rebuilt so that people in the neighborhood can interact with each other like before.

How To Solve Traffic Congestion Problem When there are some small boats entering the Fort Point Channel, the new bridge will rotate by 20 degree, allowing them going through underneath it.
When there are some big vessels entering the Fort Point Channel, the new bridge will not rotate, allowing them going through underneath it.
When there are heavy traffic congestion, the new bridge will rotate by 90 degree, allowing some vehicles passing on the bridge and therefore alleviating the traffic pressure on the Seaport Blvd.
The sections below show a range of different experiences people can have on this reborn bridge, ranging from feeling historic material from the old bridge, to having fun within the new bridge.
A-a on the old bridge The visitor can view the structure remaining from the old bridge, and even rest under the trees planted in the rectangular area.

CSO JOY PARK
COLLECTING AND PURIFYING WASTEWATER PROJECT [LOCATION] BOSTON, UNITED STATES [ACADEMIC] 2020 WINTER AT UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN SEAS [INSTRUCTOR] MARK LINDQUIST JOAN NASSAUER [INDIVIDUAL WORK]
A combined sewer is a sewage collection system of pipes and tunnels designed to simultaneously collect surface runoff in a shared system. This type of gravity sewer design is no longer used in almost every instance worldwide when constructing new sewer systems. Modern-day sewer designs exclude surface runoff from sanitary sewers, but many older cities and towns continue to operate previously constructed combined sewer systems. Boston is such a city which has those two kinds of sewage collection system. Even though combined sewer systems are being reduced, Combined sewers can cause serious water pollution problems during combined sewer overflow (CSO) events when combined sewage and surface runoff flows exceed the capacity of the sewage treatment plant, or of the maximum flow rate of the system which transmits the combined sources. I propose to create a park which can collect the waste water and runoff separately especially in wet weather so that it can help relieve the pressure on the whole sewer system. Secondly, it won't discharge the waste water to an adjacent water body before it is treated. Last but not the least, this park integrates activities people enjoy with the process of purifying waste water so that people can have a blast with their friends as well as water resources while increasing their environmental awareness.

How To Apply CSO Joy Park To Other Areas?
Model Representation
According to reserach and design above, it is straightforward to solve the water pollution problems resulting from CSO outfall when it is havey rain and give life to the abandonded areas. Here is what we need to do: after selecting all major CSO outfalls which are being controlled or required to minimize the discharge volume or under 25-year storm control, it is wise to choose abandonded areas to be CSO joy park near them and provide local people with more opportunities to communicate with each other. As some existing parks next to CSO outfall, what we need to do is to equip them with new funtions of filtering industrial and domestic water and heavy rainfall in a similar way which I use in dry dock area.

PUBLIC SPACE AND SUBWAY STATION RENEWAL PROJECT [LOCATION] SHANGHAI, CHINA [ACADEMIC] YEAR 5 SEMESTER 1 [INSTRUCTOR] CHOI [GROUP MEMBERS] LITIAN YAO, SHASHA YE [ROLE] SITE RESEARCH CONCEPTUAL DESIGN DETAILED DESIGN
As football is getting increasingly popular in China, there are a large number of football fans in big cities and even remote rural villages. People can become happy easily when they hear the good result of the game, and at the same time they also suffer from depression and pain as a result of disappointing performance of their beloved football team. Shanghai is such a city where there are three popular and successful football clubs and millions of residents pay close attention to them, therefore it is safe to say that a large number of hard corn fans of football in Shanghai go to see the match in Hongkou Football Stadium on weekends, and the football stadium is happen to be close to a subway station and a overpass. Hence, we propose to create a public space for football fanatics under the overpass and renovate the interior space in the subway station. We aim to provide a wide range of activities for them in this design to help them relieve pressure before the game, cheer them up when the team encounter failure, and share their happiness with each other when the team is in victory.
Site Analysis
Carrefour and Shopping Mall Many visitors and soccer fans are attracted to shop in here. It is an important node with a large visitors flow rate, and people can arrive at the design site after shopping.
Taking the corner shape element of the structure under the overpass, the two layers of the commercial building below the north side subway station are reconstructed and added, mainly by subtraction. The space below the south side track is suspended and added, mainly based on addition. All can provide different experiences in terms of various levels of privacy and scale.
Site There is a subway station in this site and several corridors connecting shopping malls and stadium. Most of soccer fans get off the train to watch the soccer game and get on the train to get back home after the soccer game. Shanghai International Studies University students from this university can play soccer and other sports in their spare time.
At the same time, the transitional foyer and the hub for solving traffic problems are combined in the connected place to solve the problem of people flow diversion.
Tower It can give moody fans a carnival place to throw a party.
Hongkou Football Stadium It attacts millions of soccer fans every week as the home court to Shenhua Football Club.
Double-height space High-traffic spaces from the original subway station and its affiliated commercial space are excavated. Wall The wall encloses a relatively closed and private bath and meditation rooms.
Luxun Park Soccer fans can chill out with their friends and visitors can enjoy beautiful scenery in here. Traffic Jam On the south part of the site exists a traffic conjestion, bringing a lot of inconvenience to residents and visitors as well as soccer fans who come to see the competitive football game once in a week.
Hongkou Park Football Field Being closed to the stadium, it provides entertainment and a place to chill out for soccer fans and other visitors. Private Bathing Pool It can provide a quiet physicially and mayebe spiritually healing place for football fans.

INTANGIBLE CULTURAL UTOPIA
CREATIVE CULTURAL COMMUNITY AND URBAN DESIGN PROJECT [LOCATION] WUHAN, CHINA [ACADEMIC] YEAR 5 SEMESTER 1 [INSTRUCTOR] MEI JIANG [GROUP MEMBERS] HONGJUN LIU TONGYU JIN ENQIANG CHEN ZHIMING XIE [ROLE] HAN CULTURE STUDIES FIELD WORK CONCEPTUAL DESIGN DETAILED DESIGN
With the advancement of the society and the development of science and technology, people's lives are more and more convenient, but at the same time, the development of culture has not maintained at the same speed of development. At present, Chinese intangible cultural heritage disappears at an alarming rate every year. As a cultural city, Wuhan has a rich historical heritage and cultural atmosphere. The wellknown Han opera and Peking opera can be compared. Han embroidery is also a cultural memory that has been inherited for many years. On a more spatial level, Wuhan Lifen traditional residence has to be mentioned. It has a history of hundreds of years, but the government and individuals have not paid enough attention to the cultural heritage in this area, which has led to many challenges and problems they face. In this design, I mainly discuss how to solve the cultural heritage problem by means of space creation and more importantly to increase public's awareness of protecting intangible cultural heritage by making them attracted to the newly built space and renovated architecture.
Orginal Site Analysis
Site Intangible Cultural Heritage Problem Analysis
The site, Chubaoli and other three communities are surrounded by newly built commercial area. It is still now the downtown of Wuhan city, and more importantly, it is rich with intangible cultural heritage, such as proficient Han embroidery skills acquired by most of residents, a large number of Han opera actors whose family has been performing Han opera for generations. In addition, traditional Wuhan Lifen housing architecture is the treasure of this site.
forced demolition Han embroidery skill about to be disappear
However, most of buildings of the community are old and disrepaired and some of Lifen housing has been rebuilt for another version by locals. Governments plan to demolish the buildings and update the area. Our proposal is to firstly meet needs of different groups of people, then create high-end cultural community to attract more newcomers to live in and at the same time preserve traditional architecture in this venue. More importantly, we want to use this design to avoke public's awareness of preserving intangible cultural heritage.

Our site is comprised of four different communities whose alley texture is also not the same. We chose community D called Chubaoli as our main field work target, because this community is rich with different alley texture and various kinds of public spaces. More importantly, there are a large number of traditional Lifen houses in Chubaoli. In order to figure out the relationship between house and alley, we did detailed record of every type of alley and location of public space. In the end, we summarized three types of relationship between house and alley. And each type is leading to certain condition of public space.

Our design site is located in Chubaoli district. It is one of the downtown districts in Wuhan. Due to the abundance of traditional Lifen housing architecture, we analyzed all Lifen houses in this community and summarized six types of existing Lifen house condition. Only type one is the basic type in this site, the other five types are rebuilt or repaired to meet the locals' living needs. Although it can bring them convenience in the short term, they have been faced up a bigger challenge until now. All the public space has been almost used up. So the alley has been more narrow than ever and the apperance of traditional Lifen house is not appealing any more.

Site Plan
Based on the field work of this site and research of Han culture, such as Han opera, Han embroidery, and traditional Lifen house architecture, we proposed to make this site consisting of four separate communities one whole high-quality cultural and creative community. We make fully use of the intangible cultural resources in this site, and plan to create tangible space for visitors and residents to experience them. To be more specific, the Han opera house and square in front of it is aiming to advocate the magnificent of Han opera as well as provide space for tourists and locals. Lifen house architecture is preserved and some of them is renovated to improve the life quality of dwellers. Han embroidery culture park is used to increase people's awareness of the importance of Han cultural heritage as well as supply them quiet places to rest. At the same time, we have optimized the traffic structure of the car, the pedestrian traffic structure and the green space structure, making this community more livable.

Our proposal is to build a Han opera theater as well as a public square in this site. We aim to provide residents in the neighborhood with a comfortable public space so that they can communicate with their neighbors freely and do various activities outside, such as walking dogs and holding outdoor family barbecue party. Because in our field study and analysis, their life qualify is terribly influenced by the lack of public space. Moreover, this site is much assocaited with Han culture, there are a large number of locals with different traditional Han skills, such as Han opera, Han embroidery. At the same time, most of them are unemployed. So to create this Han opera theater can give them job opportunities as well as a chance to show tourists from all over the country the magnificent of Han culture.

Han Embroidery Culture Park Concept
Formation Process
Chinese Han embroidery culture is profound and magnificent, and there are a large number of residents who are proficient in Han embroidery culture in our venue. We want to create a Han embroidery cultural park to stimulate people's understanding of Han embroidery culture, while at the same time giving local residents more public space and a strong sense of belonging. Therefore, we have formed the landscape elements by refining the basic elements, such as needles, fabrics and texture of materials in the Han embroidery culture, which constitute the following three important parts of the Han embroidery culture park.

Traditional Lifen House Unit Renovation
Lifen Street Elevation Comparison According to the research of traditional Lifen street in Wuhan and the consideration of the locals' needs for their new life in this site, we did renovate almost every Lifen house unit, and give new life to this almost forgotten Lifen community with much historic value. Now they do not need enclose some place in front of their house to form a yard. Instead, each Lifen house unit will make good use of their roof to become their private garden. Moreover, most of the first floor of the house unit will be transformed into different stores and souvenior shops so that tourists can be attracted to consume. Thus, people's life quality can be improved and the apperance of this community can also be appealing.

The whole facade of the buidling is fragmented by the windows. Vision of the subject is fragmented by the barrier. Photography subject and viewer are all fragmented by the barrier.
There is no single, "correct" way to begin a design project — a prospect that is at best liberating, and at worst paralyzing. Each color of push-pins stands for each kind of activity people are envolved in, and the complexity of intertwined thread between push-pins signals the frenquency of interaction between people, and the width of the ladder is the symbol of space between grass lands. Therefore, as the grass land gets wider and wider, the variety of activities people enjoy is increasing and people are more likely to interact with each other.

Obeserving the financial district of Boston, we noted the interaction of sidewalk, street, and parks systems. During peak lows, pedestrians compete with vehicles for mobility throguh the space as the design of the built environment results in the overlapping of these two systems. Traffic noise and vehicles create an edge condition around the park and between its segments. Similarly, the height of the buildings create a visual edge further separating park goers from the rest of the cityu.
We cannot conceive or remember time as a mere physical dimension; we can only grasp time through its actualization: the traces, places, and events of temporal occurence. Mostly, we are faced with the horror of the blank white page, the key to solution is to use different materials as many kind as possible to form a prototype which can be abstracted from what we see or what we feel in the initial phase, then try to blend our imagination with the shape of stuff we have on our hands until there will be engaging and interesting prototype of design.
