Montreux Riviera Montreux Riviera stretches along Lake Geneva from Lutry to Villeneuve. Blessed by a Mediterranean climate, this region features historic castles, vibrant towns, lovely countryside and charming hotels – making it the ideal destination for dream holidays as well as demanding business trips. Lavaux vineyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007, is the jewel of Montreux Riviera. Its terraced vines, dating from the 12th century, make up some of the loveliest countryside in Switzerland. Its wine-growing villages offer outstanding hospitality, especially in the vintners’ cellars. The majestic panorama at Rochers-de-Naye, the peaceful Grangettes nature reserve and the fields of blooming narcissus in May number among Montreux Riviera’s many natural attractions. The region’s history comes to life inside the walls of Chillon Castle, where the secrets of an eventful mediaeval past are revealed; visitors can also relive the more recent Belle Epoque era on board a CGN (Lake Geneva General Navigation Company) steamer or at one of the luxurious hotels in Montreux or Vevey. Celebrities have always been captivated by this region’s beauty. Stars flock to the Montreux Jazz Festival, whereas Chaplin preferred the tranquillity of his manor house, now converted into a museum (opens in 2016).
Montreux Situated between Lake Geneva and the Alps, Montreux enjoys a particularly pleasant climate and a gentle way of life, which, even in the 19th century, was already seducing the biggest names in literature and music. Montreux is famous for its gorgeous Belle Epoque buildings, flower-lined quays and the intimate and steep alleyways of its historic centre. In summer, the city vibrates to the sounds of the Montreux Jazz Festival and the Septembre Musical while from late November right through December the quays are suffused with the magic of the festive season guaranteed by the Montreux Christmas Market and the laughter that rings out from the Montreux Comedy Festival
Because of the exceptionally mild climate Montreux is called the capital of the Vaud Riviera. Plants associated with the Mediterranean, such as pines, cypresses and palm trees grow here. Charlie Chaplin, Freddie Mercury and several other famous people of world-renown lived and continue to live on the Vaud Riviera. The long, flower-bordered lake promenade which links Vevey and Montreux going all the way to Chillon Castle is simply asking to be strolled along. Cultural events, such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, as well as countless excursion options to the mountainous hinterland or on the lake make Montreux the most popular excursion and holiday destination. Many of the houses along the lakeside road, including the magnificent Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, date from the hayday of the Belle Epoque.
Vevey Vevey is one of the “Pearls of the Swiss Riviera”. Its lakeside location with breathtaking views of the Alpine panorama, its extraordinarily mild climate, the vineyards, numerous excursion destinations in the region and proud paddlewheel steamers on the lake characterise this town by Lake Geneva. Vevey experienced its first heyday in the belle époch period at the end of the 19th century. Even today, majestic hotels and a flower-bedecked lakeside promenade lined with palm trees continue to serve as reminders of this age. But Vevey is also a modern, regional centre which is headquarters to Nestlé, the international Food and Beverage Group. Its most famous inhabitant was probably the comedian Charlie Chaplin, who spent the last twenty five years of his life here. A monument dedicated to him stands on the lakeshore.
Lavaux vineyard terraces Take a walk through some of the most beautiful scenery in Switzerland: the UNESCO-listed Lavaux vineyard terraces are criss-crossed with marked trails with stunning views over Lake Geneva and the Alps. Little trains on wheels help you up the incline so you can enjoy a walk at your own pace. Carefully cultivating their vines for generation upon generation, whole families of vine-growers have shaped these beautiful vineyard terraces. The unique beauty of this landscape has seeped into the soul of visitors just as it has fascinated the many artists who lived in the little picturesque villages. Now considered a site of universal value, Lavaux has been elevated to the status of world heritage site by UNESCO, its mosaic of vines welcoming many walkers seeking renewed vitality and tranquillity.
Chillon Castle In Veytaux, near Montreux, Chillon Castle has stood proudly on its rocky island since the 12th century, appearing to float on the surface of Lake Geneva. Home to regular exhibitions and cultural events, it’s the most visited historical monument in Switzerland. This idyllic setting has been a delight for all to see since the 12th century: with Lake Geneva and the Alps as its backdrop, the imposing fortified Chillon Castle is surrounded by the most beautiful scenery. Not surprising that this romantic setting was for centuries a source of inspiration for many artists. Made famous by Jean-Jacques Rousseau who based the story of his novel “New Heloise” here in the 18th century, the Chillon Castle then attracted the poet Lord Byron, inspired by a true story to write his most famous poem, “The Prisoner of Chillon”. A modern museography, temporary exhibitions that are constantly renewed and cultural events give life to the castle. Apart from individual visits or audio-guided tours, the public may hire guides to discover the castle in a different way: visits combined with workshops, visits in costumes and for children, holiday workshops and theme anniversaries. New: La Verrée Vaudoise is the ideal place to taste the wines of Clos de Chillon and sample other regional products.
Sion Sion (or Sitten in German), the capital of the Canton of Valais, is known as the most sun-blessed town of Switzerland. Thanks to its central location, the small town abounding with culture is also an ideal starting point for exploring the summer and winter holiday resorts in the Valais side valleys. Sion is recognizable from afar thanks to the high towers of Castle Tourbillon and the Castle of Valeria. These landmarks guard the capital of Valais and its 30,000 inhabitants. Past and future blend in one of Switzerland’s oldest cities. Sion, which boasts a 7,000-year history, is today the economic center of Valais and an important traffic junction with its own international airport.
