About us MayDay|Design is a consultancy and design studio for innovation in the field of design, a network of experts and professionals who cooperate and efficiently manage their work to rapidly and effectively satisfy their clients’ needs.

Founded by Valentina Lollio, Francesco Zurlo and Alberto Manzoni, MayDay|Design offers solutions on the whole product system of firms, that is: product, service and communication, three elements that characterize and differentiate market offer in today’s companies. MayDay|Design also offers concept design and product development, as well as corporate identity and service planning services.


Valentina Lollio

Born in Milan, she graduated in 2004 magna cum laude in Industrial Design at Politecnico di Milano. She started working as a consultant for ATEC, a manufacturing company developing audio systems, where she was in charge of art direction. In 2006 she founded May Day Design, where she currently works as chief project manager. She is also professor at Politecnico di Milano at design develpment course and professor at Strategic Design Master at Poli.design

Francesco Zurlo

Is Phd in industrial design and Associate Professor in Industrial Design at Politecnico di Milano. He is Director of the International Master in Strategic Design of Politecnico di Milano and he has been director of POLI. Design Consortium, no profit organization operating in the applied research and specialized education in the design fields from 2004 to 2009. He yearly teaches at many Design School in Brazil, Chile, China, Japan, France, Spain, Portugal. He is author of numerous international publications about strategic design.

Alberto Manzoni

Born in Cesena, Italy, he studied for three years and took bachelor graduation in industrial design in Florence, then he took his master degree at Politecnico di Milano. He started working as an interior and product designer after his bachelor degree. In Milan, met Francesco Zurlo and started working as a freelance designer for Poli.design. Now He’s Advanced Materials and technologies professor At Politecnico di Milano, professor at strategic design master at Poli.design and partner of May Day Design.

Activities Trend and Fad picture

Research on trends in various fields; research is carried out in fields where design has a significant role to play (lifeware products: products involving people and their homes); MDD organizes data and information in pre-project categories that can support product development activities.

International Case Studies

Collection of cases and examples of innovation in different fields. Innovation often comes from pioneer and original experiences in far-away places; our activity will allow you to detect some of such experiences in specific fields.

Fair and design events report

Drafting of reports on trends and news on Italian and European fairs.

Assessment of technological potential

Comparison of most evolved technological solutions and detection of existing gaps (furniture and ceramics). The goal of this activity is that of measuring existing gaps between the technologies that are used and those that are available and most performing.

Product R&D Analysis

Consultancy on organization processes of design oriented research and development offices. The goals of the consultancy are: . mapping the working processes of research, development and design centers; . detecting gaps and weak points;

. offering solutions to re-organize processes; . testing and assessing new organization models.

Product System Analysis

A well developed and strong product system is a necessary pre-condition for companies to build a competitive advantage. MDD developed tools to assess and measure “style” and value gaps among the product system components, to map “clashing” elements and detect possible solutions.

Product Portfolio Analysis

Analysis of the firm’s product portfolio. MDD uses marketing tools and adjusts them to new product design and development needs. Competitive product survey Benchmarking among similar products and assessment of competitive performances through the use of variables linked with product system design.

Naming

Working sessions with proprietary method to detect names for newcos, new brands, new events and initiatives.

Corporate Identity

Production of Corporate Image for companies, bodies and institutions.

Scenario building

Building of interesting scenarios for companies for detecting and developing new products/services. Scenario building applies knowledge on: . socio-cultural trends;

. technological evolution; . market situation and connects them with the firm and brand’s features and needs (firm/ brand portrait).

Concept Design

Development of new concepts for products, services and fittings. Concepts are devised through an analysis, more specifically: . trend analysis . brand portrait . competitive product survey . scenario building Results can be used immediately to carry out executive projects for production.

Design management

Selection of orientation based on brief and coordination of freelance designers to develop new product. Selection, orientation and coordination of experts to develop new products. Assessment of time and process results.

Testing Activities

Scenario testing and focus group. Assessment of new use scenarios, new technological scenarios, new products/services with expert panels and typical consumers.
