stria is the largest Croatian peninsula and the most developed tourist region as well as the closest Mediterranean destination for most of the European countries. An ancient land of rich history, picturesque towns and a long coastline, whose green inland and a clear blue sea attract a great number of tourists in search of relaxation and various activities. Located to the north, Istria, where fertile red soil gives the best of produce, overlooks the entire Adriatic Sea and has seen entire civilizations come and go. Coastal cities offer hotels, camping and tourist resorts whereas inland prides itself on rural tourism that represents a perfect combination of relaxation and activities for those of you looking for a getaway from the usual tourist destinations and bustle, especially in the summer. One must, by all means, visit the villages on top of the hills to enjoy the perfect view of the magnificent countryside.
C
roatian Tuscany, as people like to call it, offers a wide choice of things to do. Istria has advantage over all other Croatian regions when it comes to hotels, gastronomy, fun or adrenaline activities. The greatest number of exclusive hotels is to be found in Rovinj and PoreÄ? whereas inland offers smaller,

more private, family estates and boutique hotels. Istria is famous for its wine routes as well, and the production of wine in this part of Croatia is at the highest level. The best known type is probably Malvasia, a white wine with a characteristic nice smell, which is also most commonly served. If you enjoy horseback-riding, driving quads throughout isolated regions, adrenaline and water parks or if you have never tried looking for the famous Istrian truffle or simply want to enjoy riding a bike, then Istria is the place to be. One of the most interesting localities is the Baredine Cave, a true stalactite and stalagmite heaven, which was proclaimed a monument of nature in 1986 and opened for visitors in 1995.

lmost every place in Istria organises some sort of a festival or music event. The Motovun Film Festival, the Dance & Non-verbal Theatre Festival in San Vincenti, the Summer Salsa Festival in Rovinj, the Dancestar in Poreč, the Outlook Festival in Pula, Ulysses Theatre on Brijuni, Istra Inspirit... are just some of the fantastic events waiting for you this summer.
Euphrasian Basilica
A
s for the Istrian towns, the town of Poreč prides on a whole group of historic monuments out of which the Euphrasian Basilica is the most valuable one, which is why it was registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. It was named after the Bishop Euphrasius, who lived in the sixth century. Tourists can climb its bell tower and enjoy a spectacular view of the city. Other important monuments include the Gothic House from 1473, the Istrian Council House, the House of Two Saints, the Round Tower and the Pentagonal Tower, both from the second half of the 15th century, the Northern Tower, the Zuccato Palace.... Square Marafor, built in the 1st century, used to be the biggest Roman sanctuary in Istria and the Great Temple of Neptune used to be the biggest of its kind on the Adriatic.
R
ovinj is located close to Lim Channel, on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula, that people have been settling for centuries. Down to the seafront there is the high and rocky coast on which houses are crowding and towards the inner part of the old city center there used to be medieval and renaissance city walls which can be seen even today. A hilltop Church of St Euphemia overlooks the city. From its sixty meters high tower the Rovinj archipelago, consisting of 22 island amongst which St Catherine's and St Andrew's islands are the biggest and most beautiful ones, can be seen. At the top of the tower there is the statue of St Euphemia, that rotates carried by the wind and pointing its direction. Rovinj, which is a city of fishermen, is best symbolised by the traditional wooden boat - batana and a traditional song – bitinada.

T
he amphitheater in Pula is the most famous symbol of the city located on the south of the Istrian peninsula and a reminder of Roman past. It is the sixth biggest amphitheater in the world and the most visited stage in the city because of the many cultural and entertainment events that take place there, mostly in the summer when the city is bustling with people. Other important monuments include the Arch of the Sergi, the Gate of Hercules and the Double Gate, Small Roman Theatre, the Temple of Augustus...in the underground spaces of the amphiteather, that once were used by the gladiators, there is the permanent exhibition of olive-growing and viticulture of Roman Istria. The amphitheater is located outside the city walls of Roman Pula and Via Flavia, which is a road built at the time of emperor Vespasian, will take you directly into the city. It remains one of the major roads to this day. Once upon a time the main port of Habsburg Monarchy, Pula has been guarded by 26 magnificent forts and fortifications for more than a century. They were all bulit in strategic locations, mostly lookouts, on which you can enjoy a fascinating view.

less known fact is that in Pula there is the world famous excavation site of amphoras – one of a kind large oval vases in which olive oil used to be stored and preserved, much like wine or salted fish. Amphoras are still close to the amphitheater, at the samelocation that, today, looks like a construction site. It will take you a couple of hours to visit all of the places mentioned so that enough time will be left to enjoy yourselves and just relax. For those of you who are a bit more persistent there is more than 100 kilometers of marked pedestrian routes outside Pula. Around thirty kilometers of these routes strech across the famous Kaiserwald forest, that is pleasant to stroll through, both in winter and summer. Most of the hotels are situated on Verudela, a peninsula covered in pine forest and surrounded by the clear blue Adriatic Sea.
O
nly ten kilometers away from Pula picturesque little towns of Vodnjan and Fažana are situated. Life is a bit slower there and both locations are a great starting point for a visit to Brijuni, a unique archipelago and a national park that has many historic monuments – from Neolithic settlements, Illyrian ruins, Byzantine and medieval buildings to Habsburg architecture – all of it in harmony with the environment full of Mediterranean vegetation and other plants from all parts of the world.
I
n Bale, a quaint little place known as one of the most beautiful Istrian towns made from stone, the hotel La Grisa is situated. It was awarded the Best Small and Family Hotel in Croatia award in 2015. It has 22 air conditioned rooms and 2 apartments as well as the La Grisa restaurant, an exclusive restaurant where traditional Istrian dishes are served.

f you want to taste Istria, you should try visiting any of the small restaurants, known as konoba, along Istria's coastline or in inland. It is, however, quite difficult to master the vocabulary of Istrian gastronomy. There are a few terms you should learn in case you want to become a true admirer of Istrian cuisine. Alongside the popular truffle from oak forests of Motovun, that is regarded the king of culinary pleasures (even though it is still unknown whether a truffle is a spice or a dish), you must try Istrian pasta, especially fuži, served mostly with homemade žvagceti or the perfect Istrian stew.
I
strian prosciutto, that is skinless, not smoked and with a bone still in it, deserves a special mention due to its unique aroma and quality. It is a product of rare quality and is better known as vijulin, which means a violin, and every October the locals traditionally organise an international fair in Tinjan to celebrate it. Istrian cuisine has experienced a revival of a type of meat from the almost extinct Istrian horned cattle, better known as boškarin. Boškarin meat is slowly but surely finding its way onto the Istrian kitchen tables and has the potential of a new culinary icon.
Did you know...
“ “
that James Joyce, the famous Irish writer, used to teach English in Pula and that he is now 'sitting' in one of the caffes (in form of a sculpture) while locals and tourists are slowly passing by? that Istria is number one world producer of extra virgin olive oil?

t only takes an hour from Zagreb to reach the part of Croatian coast famous for the best scampi in the world, authentic wines, health resorts, Apoxyomenos, Mediterranean monk seal, that likes to swim with people and makes an appearance near Rijeka every year, as well as ‘the birth place’ of tourism – beautiful Opatija. Let us start from the beginning though.... ijeka is the biggest town and represents the political, economic and cultural center of Kvarner area. It is a people oriented city, where all of one’s needs, from cultural to economic, can be satisfied. Rijeka is also the biggest Croatian harbour and a city of carnival that is held every January and has gained the reputation of one of the biggest carnivals in Europe.
O
f all the things to visit in Rijeka Korzo comes first. It is not just the main gathering point in the city but also the mirror to its inhabitants, as the locals like to put it. This is where they come together to hang out, drink a cup of coffee, discuss current affairs – it is basically the center of social life. If you feel like looking at the city from a bird’s eye view then go visit Trsat. Beside enjoying the wonderful view of the city, from a 138 meters altitude, and the old castle, be sure to visit the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the biggest of its kind in this region. The medieval City Tower is another symbol of the city just like the St. Vitus Cathedral with its rotunda. Be sure to visit Natural History Museum and its multimedia center with an aquarium, where you can learn more about the Adriatic sea life. In addition, you should also visit the city market. The abundance of fruits, vegetables, fish and local produce are some of the favourite motifs on tourists’ photos. Since Rijeka is famous for its high quality of living, great dining is to be expected. Rijeka will welcome you with a range of nice restaurants offering diverse specialties. Gardens is one of such restaurants. Locals and their guests enjoy the food as well as perfectly organised family and business events on the terrace overlooking the sea and Kvarner Bay.

omemade soup and bread, homemade pasta and a woodcoal barbecue are just some of the things that will make your day. Add homemade cakes to the list and you won’t have an excuse not to visit this fine restaurant. The ‘Molo Longo’ restaurant, located on the main city pier, in the port terminal building, is a nice addition to what Rijeka has to offer gastronomically, mostly due to its different concept that includes a VIP lounge. Its chefs, Valentina Čatić and Vjekoslav Lazić, are a definite reason for a visit and so is the fantastic sea view. If, after a nice meal, you feel like ‘stretching your legs’, a walk to Choco bar bonbonnière Kraš – there is one in Rijeka and Opatija – will make it worth a while. You’ll find this chocolate heaven on Rijeka’s Korzo.

arious famous kinds of produce, such as Griota, Bajadera, Dorina and Bananko, come in all shapes and forms so that you can enjoy them in form of a cocktail, ice cream or cake. For those of you looking for just a small sweet bite there is the handmade praline, and the chocolate fondue is a definite must-try.Aside from Kraš Coco Bar there is the famous confectionery Cukerin, a small factory of sweet and salty produce that has its roots in Rijeka’s historic and cultural heritage of well preserved barns, which used to be the city’s larder, and is filled with positive energy. You can try the best of homemade desserts such as cakes and biscuits, French macaroones, chocolate cookies ... and other delicious bites seasoned with love. Gluten free cakes and cookies were specially designed and you can enjoy them, alongside healthy raw food desserts, on a terrace in the shade of the trees. The entire concept of the Cukerin confectionery literally lies on the 500-years-old barns, that have been on Rijeka’s monuments list since 2015.

Rident Dental Clinic, with its subsidiary in Poreč, plays an important role as well. A multidisciplinary team of more than 200 doctors, specialists, dental assistants and technicians offers its services of modern dentistry and brings your smile back in 24 dental offices and 3 dental laboratories. outh of Rijeka there is a whole array of coastal towns that are popular amongst the tourists due to being so close to Zagreb. Jadranovo, Selce, Crikvenica, Novi Vinodolski... are all famous for their events held on town squares. The vicinity of major cities played a role in the development of weekend tourism that lasts throughout the year. Crikvenica has a perfect location, only 35 kilometers from Rijeka and an hour and a half drive from Zagreb, and has become a perfect weekend destination with lots of things to do and places to see.

he Frankopan Days, the Ad Turres Days and the Fishermen’s Week are just some of the events that attract a huge number of both local and foreign visitors. Tourism in Crikvenica truly has a long history. It all started around the 1890s when, in 1888, the first public wooden swimming baths were built as well as the first hotel – Hotel Therapia – built in 1894. The hotel remains one of the most famous town symbols to this day. Crikvenica is best known for being a health resort but aside from that one can visit Town Museum, the City Library and the City Gallery, many churches and chapels and, of course, the Aquarium in Vinodolska street.Despite being only 200m2 big, it displays more than 100 Adriatic fish, around 50 tropical and some freshwater fish as well. For those of you who are a bit more athletic there are well marked hiking routes that will take you to beautiful lookouts with spectacular views of the Kvarner Islands. Novi Vinodolski prides on all types of holidays: from hiking, cycling and horseback-riding to historic monuments such as Frankopan Castle, Roman Fort Lopsica, City Museum and Gallery and the Glass Chapel of the Holy Cross. One of the oldest Slavic codes –Law Codex of Vinodol – represents an excellent source of information on medieval times.

f you decide to head from Rijeka towards the northwest, you will reach Opatija – one the most popular Croatian tourist destinations. Also known as the cradle of Croatian tourism, it has the biggest number of hotels per capita and the choice is truly wide: from the very typical ones to the exclusive 5-star hotels or boutique hotels. Sometime around the end of the 19th century the locals noticed the town’s potential and built the first major hotel – Hotel Kvarner – in 1884. The word spread fast through Europe and Opatija was soon proclaimed a health resort. Being a tourist destination with the longest tradition, Opatija is also very popular when it comes to congress tourism, various festivals, seminaires and counselling. It is the favourite destination for people from Zagreb and Rijeka but also Slovenia.

here are many restaurants, confectioneries, clubs and caffes here as well. Don’t forget the beautiful parks full of exotic flowers that were brought here by overseas captains, a magical 12 kilometers long promenade, romantic Habsburg villas, the sea on one side and the mountain range Učka on the other and you’ll immediately understand why king Franz Joseph I, the Russian novelist Čehov and the American dancer Isadora Duncan loved coming here. Opatija has a moderate climate, which contributes to the high number of visitors throughout the year, and events such as Marunada, when various dishes are prepared from a sweet type of chestnut called marun, the Asparagus Festival in Lovran or preparing delicacies from Istrian truffle make it even more popular. The Festival of Chocolate is one of the most recently introduced events and is held at the beginning of December when hotels participate in creating chocolate menus in combination with some spa treatments, as for example the chocolate massage. In summer, everyone is either swimming or sun bathing except when it is extremely hot, which is when people usually have a drink on one of the many fabulous terraces.

n active sailing holiday makes it possible to visit more destinations in a short period of time and offer a whole new perspective. Secluded beaches, hidden bays, a light summer breeze, a route of your choice...you decide whether it's time for a quiet night in a secluded bay or to rule the dance-floor in one of the clubs along the coast. At the same time you're on a boat, far away from everyday problems and technology. There is sea all around you. Croatia has one of the most indented coastlines in the world and, with its 1244 islands, represents a perfect nautical destination. Some of those island are worldfamous (because of an unusual shape), as for example GaleĹĄnjak, that has the shape of a heart. Some inhabited and some not, some higher and steeper and some barely rising above the water with sheep peacefully grazing on them. Every single one is special. If you still haven't found the perfect boat, The Sailingly Charter will help you find one because they offer all possible types of boats one can imagine: from sailing boats to Gulets (wooden sailing boats) and trimarans. et us start from the northern part of the region and National Park Brijuni. Around one hundred archeological sites and monuments are located on 14 bigger and smaller islands. After the Second World War this became the presidential summer residence and was visited by many important statesmen and celebrities from all over the world. According to a legend, angels gathered pieces of heaven, scattered them amongst the rocks and protected them by the sea.
T
he island of Loťinj is one of the sunniest places in Europe, due to great insolation and lesser overcast, and an average calculation of sunshine hours per day equals to seven – every single day of the year! The island became one of the first tourist destinations as early as the 19th century owing to a specific climate and rich vegetation. It is, today, one of the most famous health resorts in the world, where people with asthma, as well as other similar medical conditions, come to recover. Health tourism has, therefore, been developing parallel to the classic one.

n the southeastern part of the island an idyllic small town with colourful houses, famous for its captains and seamen – Veli Lošinj – is located. Magnificent villas with spectacular gardens, where captains' families and rich gentlemen used to live, as well as the wonderful old houses, where rich noblemen of that time used to spend their winters, are still to be found here. Besides hiking and cycling, you may also take up free climbing, diving, sailing, water sports, tennis, sport fishing, angling and hunting (feathered and small game, muflon, fallow deer and boar will serve as an excellent target for the more experienced hunters as well...). You can walk from Veli Lošinj to Mali Lošinj, which is one of the most important places on the Croatian Adriatic. The discovery of Apoxyomenos, which was an event of global importance, most certainly played a very significant role in cultural sense.

here are several terms that can be used to best symbolise Pag, and those are Pag lace, cheese and lamb. This is maybe enough to start with, but Pag is also an island of wild nature, long beaches and extreme partying. The island, of an unusual long shape, often reminds one of the Moon surface mostly due to strong bora that blows from Velebit carrying sea salt with it, which makes it hard for vegetation to develop. It is perhaps because of the wind that Pag qualifies as one of the sunniest Croatian islands with more than 2500 sunshine hours per year. Zrće is one of the most famous beaches with numerous bars and clubs, offering entertainment all day long, and it pinpointed Pag on the map of younger population looking for a good party. The disco clubs host world most famous DJs and music stars all summer long. However, other kinds of fun activities, beside the neverending partying, are also available on Pag as for example windsurfing, diving and cycling. Pag lace, now more than ever, symbolises Pag in the best possible way since an authentic souvenir is always great to find. Food lovers will enjoy excellent Pag cheese, made exclusively from the milk of the indigenous pramenka sheep, that has a specific taste to it due to salty vegetation and medicinal herbs, such as sage, that the sheep graze throughout the year.

he beauty of the Kornati Islands can best be seen from air (with a view of its 152 islands out of which 89 belong to National Park Kornati) but also by sailing from one island to another. This is why the region is very popular amongst yachtsmen who gladly pick it as their summer destination. Inside the park there are twenty bays, where anchoring is permitted. Spending the night in Kornati is an unforgettable experience because the sky is covered in thousand of stars easily seen due to the lack of artificial light in this pristine nature.

Those houses, together with a few lighthouses, remain the only man-made structures on the islands. Be sure to visit the Tureta fort, built in the sixth century as well as the church Gospa od Tarca, where pilgrimage takes place every July. he island of Zlarin, located in Šibenik archipelago, is best known for its red coral of excellent quality. Close by there is the island of Krapanj, famous for sea sponge diving and the Museum of Sponge.
rač is the biggest Dalmatian island and is famous for Brač stone used in construction of many important buildings all over the world. However, it is probably even more famous for one of the most beautiful beaches in the world - Zlatni Rat – that streches for almost half a kilometer into the sea and whose tip changes its position depending on the wind and currents. Regular winds provide the perfect conditions for windsurfing. Modern hotels are located mostly on the western part of the island. Bol, the oldest settlement on the island, is located on the other side of the beach. Once a place of turbulent history, it is now predominantly a tourist destination. A moderate climate and long beaches are mostly responsible for the development of tourism. One of the biggest attractions on Brač is the Dragon's Cave in the small village of Murvice, that served as a temple of Glagolitic friars in the 15th century and where the legend of the one-eyed giant Orkomarin is still very much alive. Brač also offers various adventurous activities such as sailing, cycling, paragliding and hiking. The clear blue sea surrounding the island is perfect for scuba diving.

ields of lavander, olive orchards and vineyards provide for a calm atmosphere, just like the one on canvas, while the coastal parts are bustling with life. The city of Hvar is the center of tourism and its port has been used as a safe haven for centuries. The city alone is a monument that has its origins in the Renaissane period. The most prominent monument is the cathedral which, together with Bishop's Palace, encloses the eastern part of the biggest Dalmatian square – the Hvar piazza. One of the oldest public theaters in Europe is close by. The best view of the city and the neighbouring islands can be enjoyed from the fort Fortica, built in 16th century on a nearby hill.

This is where you'll try the best gregada – a fish dish – Adriatic lobsters with homemade pasta, excellent risottos and dessert you don't want to miss. Stari Grad is a bit more different from Hvar since it is located in the middle of the island and is also the oldest town on it. Life is a bit slower here and the prices are lower as well. It is a place of exquisite beauty, pristine beaches and crickets whose song you can hear coming from the neighbouring pine forests.

LIKA
L T
ika is finally becoming more popular considering its vast tourist potential and the fact that it has been unfairly neglected despite its location on the way towards the coast. Even though Plitvice Lakes has been a well-known destination since forever, we are about to introduce the off the beaten track localities of 'Croatian Canada'? Let's head towards Lika just like everyone else – from Zagreb. ruth be told, there are no exclusive hotels in this region, but its spectacular nature and different kinds of things to do will make you forget about the hotels. If you're an athletic type of a tourist, then you must try cycling (in Perušić region alone there is 150 kilometers of cycling routes), hiking, horsebackriding, white water rafting, skiing, hunting and fishing and some new specialised kinds of tourism such as spelunking tourism (for those who like caves and pits) in case of which Lika is your top destination. Not far away from Perušić a cave park, Grabovača, has been opened. All the caves within the park are connected through two educational trails, 'Man and Karst' and 'Following the Footsteps of Mirko Malez', both of which pass through the forest, across the slopes and pass the ravines and have information boards along their way. Tourists may enter the Samograd cave with a guide. The temperature of an average 8 degrees makes it an ideal getaway during the hot summer days. You can also avoid high temperatures by hiding in Cerovac caves located on the southern side of Nature Park Velebit, close to the city of Gračac. It is a complex of three caves and tourists may visit the first 700 meters out of the 4 kilometers that have been explored. In the last couple of years birdwatching has become popular as well, thanks to the 55 species of nesting birds such as the alpine swift (Tachymarptis melba). Lika's animal kingdom is quite diverse and a proof of this is a number of 49 protected species, the most prominent ones being the bat, the wolf and the brown bear.

national park, Plitvice Lakes, attracts more than a million visitors a year, who admire a complex of 16 lakes, numerous bigger and smaller waterfalls, Šupljara cave and rich vegetation. The park consists of Upper and Lower lakes out of which 12 upper ones. The biggest and best known is lake Kozjak, which is 46 meters deep and on which electric tourist boats glide next to adventurers in rental boats. In the middle of Kozjak there is Štefanija's Island, 275 meters long and 60 meters wide. The main attraction, however, is the Great Waterfall which is 78 meters high and listed as the highest in Croatia. Bears, wolves, lynx, owls, hawks and otters are just some of the animal species that live in the forests of Plitvice. This, however, is no reason for concern because wild animals do not leave the woods (unless the winters are extremely cold and they are looking for food, which can happen only when there are no tourists anyways). National Park Plitvice has been listed on the UNESCO Natural Heritage List. Northern Velebit National Park has been on the same list since 1999 and is the coldest Croatian region. Its highest peak, Veliki Zavižan, is 1676 meters high. Winter lasts for 7 months here, which is why warmer days should be used to explore the untouched nature. Bears, lynx, wolves, black cocks, chamois, owls and woodpeckers are not afraid of winter and live there throughout the entire year. In June every year the most famous event in the park, a cycling race called 'Hillclimb to Zavižan', is organised.

side from its natural beauty Lika is also known for potato growing. Potato growing is a matter of pride in Lika. When touring the villages you'll come across many family cheese farms that produce all kinds of cheeses such as skuta or lički škripavac – a cheese that makes an unusual sound while eating it.

Horseback- riding through the forests of Lika, on top of elegant horses, is a special experience (all the more so since Winnetou, the chief, rode the same way in the movie filmed on these locations). Such an activity is available on the Linden Tree Retreat & Ranch estate close to Velika Plana. inally, Lika is probably best known for the fact that this is where Nikola Tesla, one of the most famoust inventors ever, was born. Tesla was born in a small village of Smiljan next to Gospić, on 10 July 1856. You can visit Nikola Tesla Memorial Center in Smiljan and find out all about the inventions that we still use in the everyday life.

he longest and most beautiful part of the Croatian coast, Dalmatia, spreads over the middle and southern part of the Croatian Adriatic. It is at the same time the most indented part of the coastline so that the tourists can enjoy hundreds of inhabited or uninhabited islands, bays, cliffs and shoals. But, let us start with the Dalmatian cities.
T
he most northern Dalmatian city, Zadar, is the administrative, economic, political and cultural center of the region that has around 75.000 inhabitants. It is surrounded by 5 national parks (Plitvice, Krka, Paklenica, Kornati and Northern Velebit), 3 nature parks (Lake Vrana, Telaščica and Velebit) and an archipelago that spreads over 24 bigger and almost 300 smaller islands, cliffs and shoals. This is why no one was surprised when Zadar was chosen as the best European tourist destination. All with a reason! A place to stay in Zadar has been on many wishlists for years now thanks to the city officials and locals being so original in terms of local tourism. Renowned attractions such as Morske orgulje (the Sea Organ – an experimental musical instrument that creates sounds using the force of the waves that strike against the stone) and Pozdrav suncu (Monument/Greetings to the Sun – a modern installation consisting of three hundred multilayered glass panels shaped into a circular form with a 22 meter radius) or the holograms that can be seen throughout the city when events are organised and which attract tourist from around the world. In addition to all that, there is the Night of the Full Moon, a popular event with an amazing vibe that can not be felt anywhere else. When visiting one of the numerous churches in the city, as for example St Donatus Church dating from the 9th century, St Anastasia's Cathedral from the 12th century, St Mary's Church and convent from 1091, St Chrysogonus Church.

You'll find collections dating from the ancient, Roman as well as medieval times. Alongside historic monuments and cultural sites there are numerous restaurants, bars, exhibitions and souvenir shops. A definite recommendation is the Italian restaurant Salsa Rossa, situated in the heart of the old city a couple of minutes far from the church of St. Donatus. Cute and delightful restaurant with its romantic terrace and delicious food, will give you memorable experience. And if you're missing something for your day trip, you can buy it, and so much more, in a shopping mall - City Galleria Zadar. Finally, once you've seen and bought it all, head towards inland to go white water rafting on the river Zrmanja, drive quads on Velebit or try bungee jumping off the Šibenik bridge on your way to our next destination – Šibenik. If, by any chance, you feel like something less adventurous, visit Krka National Park and enjoy the sound of waterfalls and beautiful nature that spreads over 109 square kilometers along the river Krka. Inside the park, Roški waterfall is the most visited (and most famous) site together with the island Visovac, where a Roman Catholic monastery, founded by the Franciscans in 1445, remains to be seen.

nly 18 kilometers further away from Krka National Park there is the historic city of Šibenik, situated where the river finds its way into the sea. An excellent location made it possible for the city to become the administrative, political, cultural and economic center of Šibenik – Knin County as well as an important traffic junction. Everyone knows that Šibenik is the place of birth of the world famous, and unfortunately too soon departed, basketball player, Dražen Petrović. A less known fact about Šibenik is that there is a unique Children's Festival organised every summer, a Festival of Klapa (form of traditional a cappella singing), a Festival of Dalmatian Songs, an Off Jazz/Blues Festival, a Festival of Dance alongside many other events that are held in this city every year. The Šibenik Cathedral of St James is the most famous city landmark and was built during the Rennaisance times, sometime between 1431 and 1536, and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Šibenik is also famous for its fortresses Cathedral of St James - Šibenik some of which were restored in the last couple of years. St Nicholas Fortress at the entrance to Šibenik harbour, St Michael's Fortress, St John's Fortress and Šubićevac Fortress have opened its gates to cultural and tourist events and are now a must-visit location.

n addition to all of this, you might also want to take some time and pay a visit to the famous Primošten vineyards, also on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and have a sip of Babić, a well - known autochthonous wine variety used to produce quality wine, in the Vinoplod winery, in an eco friendly way.And if you're spending the night, don't forget to visit one of the most popular clubs in the country, Aurora Club.On your way to the south you should by all means stop in Trogir, a city located inbetween the mainland and the island of Čiovo. Its historic center has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997, but the city has been attracting local and foreign tourists with its stone streets and architecture as well as various events for a much longer time.

plit is the biggest Dalmatian and the second biggest Croatian city and, together with Dubrovnik, it has been competing for the title of the most famous Dalmatian city in the last couple of years. Split has seen a true tourist uplift as a result of opening of new hotels and restaurants as well as organisation of events such as Ultra Festival, Wine Festival in the cellars of Diocletian's Palace, the changing of Diocletian's Roman Guard, Split Beach Festival....tickets for any of these events and many more available online on Eventime website.
S
plit is the administrative, political, economic, cultural, sport and science center and an important traffic junction of the Middle Dalmatia. The average population of 178.102 (according to the listings of 2011) doubles during the summer due to the number of tourists visiting the city and its surroundings. From a historical perspective the 1700-years-old city is the oldest in region. The most famous landmark, Diocletian's Palace, has been on UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979 as a building of excellent condition within whose walls life is still bustling. The Roman emperor Diocletian built it in 305 in order to spend his remaining days in it. It has four entrances: Golden Gate on the northern wall, Silver Gate on the eastern wall, Iron Gate on the western one and Brass gate on the southern wall. The central square, Peristil, located inside the palace walls, still represents the location where locals and tourists come together. The most famous city church is the St Domnius Cathedral and Saint Domnius is also the patron saint of Split. Try to find some time to visit the gallery of one of the most famous Croatian sculptors, Ivan Meťtrović. If you're staying for more than a day (and this is a must), try to stay in the only 5- star hotel, Atrium, located next to Diocletianus Aqueduct and a 15 minutes walk from the city center. In Podstrana, close to Split, there is the boutique hotel Damianii. One of a kind with its art-deco style, made to please the most demanding of guests. Grgur Ninski statue

very one of the 12 rooms is furnished with unique handmade pieces, which was, just like everything else in this hotel, carefully chosen. When discussing the city's gastronomy, we mustn't forget to mention a restaurant in the heart of the city just across the sculpture in Marmontova street, CHOPS GRILL Steak & Seafood, opened in June 2003. Chef Ivan Nikolić is responsible for original pasta dishes and risottos, delicious salads and the finest of steaks as well as prosciutto in truffle sauce with homemade macaroni from the island of Korčula and for the really hungry ones there is beefsteak in grilled scampi sauce served with scampi from grill. Not far away there is yet another great restaurant – Tratoria Tinel. Only 30 meters away from Splitska Riva it offers fresh fish, seashells, meat dishes, pasta and original homemade desserts. Every Friday and Saturday there is live traditional music as well. However, we're still not done because the number of fine restaurants just keeps on rising. In Paradigma restaurant it is impossible to say whether it is the restaurant or the chef, Ante Udovičić, that is more famous. Usually described as a fine dining restaurant Paradigma welcomes guests of excellent taste and high expectations.

here is fresh fish, seasonal vegetables and finest pieces of meat on the menu every day. Furthermore, there's a long tradition of shopping in Split as well. The women of Split are said to be very well dressed and most beautiful on the Mediterranean so that it is no wonder that Zaks and Argentum – two biggest Croatian jewellerymakers–decided to open their shops in Split. When it comes to health and beauty of the wonderful ladies in Split there is the famous Croatian brand Bio&Bio with the best selection of organic products from around the world but also from their own production.Don't forget to visit the city surroundings. Visit the river Cetina to cool off in the summer, enjoy the beautiful beaches of Makarska and take a ride on one of the Next bikes (also available in Zadar and Šibenik). And if this is still not enough then climb Biokovo and discover the greatest view of Dalmatian islands there is. If, on the other hand, you're traveling for business, your stay will most certainly end in Dugopolje, which is a business area next to Split. Talking about successful Dalmatian companies, a chain of supermarkets Tommy is the best representative. There you will find all you need for a carefree holiday; delicious food products, toiletries as wel as the beach necessities - in case you've forgotten something at home. Supermarkets Tommy are to be found from Zadar to Dubrovnik so that you can count on finding one on every holiday destination. In case you get use to relying on Tommy supermarkets, they are to be found in Istra, Kvarner and even Zagreb.

he Vranjača cave is situated in the heart of the Dalmatian hinterland, in the village of Kotlenice, a half hour drive away from Split and only 10 minutes drive away from Dugopolje, the municipal centre and exit to Split from the ZagrebDubrovnik A1 motorway. The cave is located at the foot of the central part of the Mosor Mountain, on its north-facing slope, and it consists of two parts. The cave was discovered in 1903 by the owner of the land where the cave is located, Mr Stipe Punda and it was opened to the public in 1929. A small natural passage leads from the entrance to a chamber composed of 9 smaller parts full of cave decorations in all shapes, sizes and colours. A specific feature of the cave is that its interior maintains a constant year-round temperature of about 15⁰C. Full of stalactites and stalagmites, pillars and arcades, Vranjača is one of the most beautiful pearls of the karst landscape and it was declared a protected geomorphological natural monument in 1963.

plit has also witnessed a development of health tourism in the last decade. An important contribution in that sense was made by the most renowned eye clinic in the region, Svjetlost. The very best ophthalmologists, supreme diagnostics, state of the art laser technology for refractive surgery, nicely furnished space...have all contributed to the rising number of patients-tourists from neighbouring countries.
W
hen you head towards the most southern destination, don't miss the mussel and oystersgrowing farm in Ston and take a walk along one of the longest stone walls in Europe. Finally, the jewel of the Mediterranean and most famous Croatian tourist destination - the city of Dubrovnik. The center of DubrovnikNeretva County with its 42.615 inhabitants (listings from 2011) has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979. Throughout the history, in the 14th and 15th century, it was a very important traffic and business junction alongside Venice and Ancona, on the Italian side of the Adriatic, and so became a republic in the 15th century. There are not many unknown facts about Dubrovnik so that it seems difficult to discover something new. Walls of Dubrovnik spread over 2 kilometers and are featured in the famous HBO TV series The Game of Thrones together with Stradun, Rector's Palace, Church of St Blaise and the fortresses Lovrijenac, Revelin, Minčeta, St John and Bokar. Sponza Palace from the 16th century, Orlando's Column from 1418, Church of Male Braće with the Franciscan Monastery from the 14th century, the Assumption Cathedral... it is impossible to list all landmarks in such a small space. A procession celebrating the patron saint St Blaise takes place on 3 February every year and includes Dubrovnik locals and their foreign guests. The most famous summer event is Dubrovnik Summer Festival, which lasts for 45 days and hosts concerts, plays, exhibitions and games on different localities throughout the city. All the details can be easily looked up on the website. Orlando’s Column

et us now say a few words about the Dubrovnik gastronomy. There are not many people who haven't heard about Orsan Gverović from Zaton Mali. Only 7 kilometers away from the city, this traditional Dalmatian restaurant and its owner, the Gverović family, have been welcoming guests since 1966. Even the locals claim such fresh fish is nowhere else to be found so you'd better listen to them! However, Steakhouse Domino offers something completely different. The name itself is a good pointer to what you should order. Best quality steaks prepared and served with a dash of secret ingredients will mean heaven to all you steak lovers. Once you've satisfied your needs for good food, be sure to satisfy those for a cultural experience by visiting one of the Dubrovnik museums. At your disposal there is Cultural History Museum, Maritime Museum, Ethnographic Museum, Archeological Museum and the Museum of Contemporary History. And once you've done indulging yourself gastronomically and culturally, take the cablecar up Srđ and enjoy one of the loveliest Adriatic views – the one of the city and the Elaphite islands. As a souvenir of your stay in Croatia buy the souvenir that made Croatia famous throughout the world – the original Croatian necktie from the exclusive Croata shop located within the walls of Dubrovnik.
S
peaking of original souvenirs one should take home, there is the Perković schnaps made from all kinds of fruit. The Perković family has been producing this fine liquor since 2002. In addition, there is another product that sticks out amongst the many gastronomic souvenirs. It's the Gligora cheese, that has been produced by the Gligora family in Kolan on the island of Pag ever since 1950. They are the proud winners of many international awards for excellence.
