WAY TO THE ADRIATIC
Zagreb is the capital of the Republic of Croatia and its cultural, scientific, economic, political and administrative centre. It is located in the north-west side of the country on the southern slopes of the Medvednica Mountain along the River Sava. Although the oldest settlement in the urban area of Zagreb was a Roman town of Andautonia, now Šćitarjevo, the real beginnings of Zagreb today could be found in two medieval settlements. The smaller and eastern Kaptol, inhabited mainly by clergy and housing Zagreb Cathedral, was founded in 1094 when Hungarian King Ladislav (1040 – 1095) had established the Zagreb Diocese. The larger and western Gradec, inhabited mainly by farmers and merchants, was proclaimed a free and a royal city by the Golden Bull of King Bela IV in 1242 as a sign of his gratitude to its inhabitants for offering him a refuge from Tatars. Gradec (the Upper Town) and Kaptol were united in 1851 by Viceroy Josip Jelačić (1801 – 1859), who is accredited for this and also for the naming of the main city square, Ban Josip Jelačić Square. There is a legend of how the city was named: on a sunny day, a brave governor, exhausted from a battle, asked a girl named Manda to ladle him out (“zagrabiti” in Croatian) some water from the spring (Manduševac) and the city became Zagreb. In the second half of the 19th century the town spread its borders southward and the new centre was created - the Down Town: from Ban Jelačić Square in the north to the railway in the south and from the West Railway Station to the Drašković Street in the east. The most representative part of the town between Petrinjska and Savska Street, is made of series of squares, called Green Horseshoe due to abundance of plants. Important cultural and scientific institutions of the town were placed there. The position of the town enabled the growth and Zagreb soon started to spread. The area between the railway and the River Sava witnessed a new construction boom after the World War II. New residential areas south of the River Sava were built (The New Zagreb) and the town expanded westward and eastward. Today, Zagreb extends over 30 kilometres (19 miles) east-west and around 20 kilometres (12 miles) north-south. It is the only metropolitan area in Croatia known for its high quality of living and that makes Zagreb more interesting to the foreigners who are more than welcome to enjoy and spend some quality time in the town with million hearts.
The Stone Gate is the only preserved gate from medieval defence walls and one of the most recognizable symbols of Zagreb. Although it was first mentioned in 1429, it is assumed to have been built in 1266. In 1760 it was renovated after a great fire that destroyed much of Gradec on the 31 May 1731, burning down houses that were close to the Stone Gate. There is a legend that all wooden parts of the Gate were destroyed except the painting of the Holly Mary and Jesus. To commemorate the event, grateful citizens built a chapel within the arch of the Old Stone Gate. On the 200th anniversary of its miraculous salvation from the fire, the 31 May 1931, the painting on canvas depicts Our Lady with a gold crown which was added to the altar of the chapel. Today many believers come here to pray, light candles and worship the Holly Mary of the Stone Gate. St. Mark’s Square is situated in the centre of the Upper Town with church of St. Mark in the middle. It was the centre of trade and social life of the former Gradec until the mid-19th century when it became the Croatian political centre. Today, it is still the symbol of political life in Croatia – Croatian presidents take their oath here and important state institutions, the Croatian Parliament, the Government and the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Croatia are placed in the surrounding buildings. The Old Town Hall is placed in Ćirilometodska Street and it was here since Middle Ages. Today it is the place for the Town Assembly meetings. St. Mark’s Church is the parish church of the old Zagreb and one of its oldest buildings. It was built in the 13th century and from that Romanesque period there is a window in the south wall of the church and a bell-tower. In the second half of the 14th century, the church was reconstructed and turned into a late Gothic church. The most valuable part of St. Mark’s Church is its south portal, considered to be the work of the sculptors of the Parler family from Prague (end of the 14th century). The Gothic composition of the portal consists of fifteen effigies placed in eleven shallow niches. The statues of Joseph and Mary with the infant Jesus are on top, and below them one can see St. Mark and the Lion; the Twelve Apostles are placed on both sides of the portal (four wooden statues replaced the original ones which had been destroyed). In its artistic composition and the number of statues, this portal is the richest and the most valuable Gothic portal in South Eastern Europe. On the north-western wall there is the oldest coat of arms of Zagreb from 1499. On the roof, tiles are laid so that they represent the coat of arms of Zagreb (white castle with the red background) and the Triune Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia. Again, the church has been reconstructed twice until today, in the second half of the 19th century according to the Viennese architects’ design, Friedrich von Schmidt

(1825 – 1891) and Hermann Bollé (1845 – 1926), and in the first half of the 20th century, when the painter Jozo Kljaković (1889 – 1969) painted its walls, the works of well-known sculptor Ivan Meštrović (1883 – 1962) were put on the altar. St. Catherine’s Church, placed in Katarinski Square in the Upper Town, is the finest baroque church in Zagreb, built between 1620 and 1632 by the Jesuits. A monastery was built adjacent to the church and today it is a home to the art gallery Klovićevi Dvori. The church is one-nave with six side chapels and a shrine. The chapels have five wooden baroque altars from the 17th century and one marble altar from 1729. The ceiling and the walls are full of stucco from 1732. In the shrine, on the main altar, there is a big illusionists’ composition St. Catherine among the Philosophers of Alexandria, painted by Kristofor Andrija Jelovšek (Slovenian painter from Ljubljana). St. Catherine’s church was damaged in a fire twice in the past, once in 1645 and again in 1674. Its interior was devastated but it was refurnished with the help of wealthy Croatian nobles. The last disaster was the 1880’s earthquake and the church needed the reconstruction that was done according to the Hermann Bollé’s project. The Lotrščak Tower was built in the middle of the 13th century to guard the southern gate of the town wall, a former small gate Dverce, which was demolished in 1812, during the reconstruction of the southern promenade, today called the Strossmayer Promenade. The tower is the best preserved building of the former defence system of Gradec. The name is derived from Latin „campana latrunculorum“, the Bell of Thief as it was called, referring to the bell hung in the tower to signal the closing of the town gates. Instead of the Bell of Thief, the Grič Cannon is fired from the tower each day at noon since the 1 January 1877 until present time. The blasting of the cannon of Zagreb has become one of its traditions and the most peaceful one in the world. The Funicular links the Upper Town (Strossmayer Promenade and the Lotrščak Tower) with the Down Town (Ilica Street). Its 66-metre (217 ft) track makes it one of the shortest public-transport funiculars in the world. The funicular was built in 1890, but due to frequent damages, it has been in operation since the 23 April 1893. Initially it had steam engines, which were substituted with electrical engines in 1934. Its present appearance dates from 1974. Having in mind that it kept its original shape, constructional and most of the technical properties, it was given legal protection as a monument of culture.

The Strossmayer Promenade, tree-lined alley, placed along the former southern defensive wall of Gradec, was built at the end of the 19th century with money donated by private citizens. It was named after the Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer (1815 – 1905), a prominent member of the Croatian Cultural Revival and an eminently influential person of the 19th-century society and politics. There are magnificent views from the promenade of the Down Town, and of the Zagreb Cathedral and the whole Kaptol. The promenade got its final form at the beginning of the 20th century when public stairs, fence walls and lamps were added. Citizens of Zagreb and its visitors like to walk along the promenade and rest a little next to the great Croatian poet and writer Antun Gustav Matoš (1873 – 1914) on The statue of Matoš resting on a bench. This original monument is the work of the well known sculptor Ivan Kožarić (1921). The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary on Kaptol is the tallest and most monumental Neo-Gothic style sacral building in Croatia, south-east of the Alps. It is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and to St. Stephen, the Hungarian king, its second patron. The cathedral had a long history of construction and restoration after several acts and threats of terrorism and natural disasters. The construction started soon after the establishment of the Diocese of Zagreb (about 1094) in the transitional Romanesque-Gothic style and was finished in 1217, but Tatars destroyed it in 1242. The Bishop Timothy (1263 – 1287) started the construction of the new, Gothic style monumental cathedral on remnants of the older one and the construction lasted during the 14th and the 15th century. In the 16th century the cathedral was fortified by walls and towers due to fear of the Ottoman Turks. After the threat had passed (17th century), a single bell-tower was built in Renaissance and Baroque style. During the 18th century the cathedral fortifications on the south and east were reconstructed into monumental bishop’s palace. The cathedral was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1880. The main nave collapsed and the bell-tower was damaged beyond repair. The restoration of the cathedral in the Neo-Gothic style was led by Hermann Bollé (1845 – 1926), according to the design of Friedrich von Schmidt (1825 – 1891), bringing the cathedral to its present form with two elegant belltowers (105 m or 344,5 ft) that became the symbol of Zagreb. Even though one tower with the wall in front of the cathedral was pulled down in 1906 in order to open the view of the renovated front, the walls remain one of the best preserved Renaissance defence walls in Europe. In front of the cathedral, at the Kaptol square, there is a statue of the Holy Virgin Mary with four angels, work of an Austrian sculptor Anton Dominik Fernkorn (1813 – 1878). The Treasury of the cathedral contains fine works of religious art and objects that, along with rich cathedral interior, represent an important cultural and religious heritage of the Croatian people.

About Zagreb Tkalčićeva Street is the most attractive and colourful street of Zagreb, a place where life pulses in front of numerous traditional shops, cafes and restaurants particularly during hot summer evenings. Tkalčićeva street used to be called Potok which means a brook and it flew through the present street dividing Gradec and Kaptol. Power of the water from the brook was used for the mills that supplied citiziens of Zagreb with flour. First manufactures of paper, cloth, stonemasonry, liqueurs and leather factory were built here. The leather factory was constructed in 1864 and developed into the largest one in the city. Industrial development caused the pollution of the water. At the end of the 19th century, the creek had to be covered and its waters diverted into the Ribnjak valley, and later on, to the Sava River. In 1913 the street was named after the historian Ivan the Baptist Tkalčić (1840 – 1905) who had dedicated his life to the study of the history of the Zagreb Diocese and the City of Zagreb. Complete reconstruction of the street was made in the second half of the 20th century. A statue of the great Croatian female novel writer and the first Croatian female journalist, Marija Jurić – Zagorka (1873 – 1957) is placed in its central part. Ban Jelačić Square is the central and most popular town square. The square has existed since the 17th century as the place of provincial fair and market, named Harmica. In 1848 the square was renamed in the honour of Ban Josip Jelačić (1801 – 1859). The statue of Ban Josip Jelačić on a horse standing in the middle of the square was created by an Austrian sculptor Anton Dominik Fernkorn (1813 - 1878) and it was installed on 19 October 1866 by Austrian authorities. After the World War II, 1947 Communist government removed the statue and renamed the square Trg Republike (The Republic Square) accusing him of being a servant of foreign interests. Antun Bauer, the curator of Gliptoteka Gallery, kept it in the gallery cellar until 1990. In 1990 after elections in Croatia and public petition, the statue was returned to the square and the name has again been changed in Ban Josip Jelačić’s honour and his struggle for freedom and unification of Croatian provinces against Hungarians. The Square has always been the centre of city’s social life and most popular meeting point. Zrinjevac is named after Croatian Ban Nikola Šubić Zrinjski (1508 - 1566) who died defending Hungarian fortress of Szigetvar besieged by the Ottoman invaders. It is a part of ‘’Lenuci’s Horseshoe’’ or ‘’Green Horseshoe’’. It consists of eight squares in Donji Grad laid by an engineer Milan Lenuci (1849 – 1924) in the 19th century. The central fountain was the first fountain, built in 1878. It is popularly called ‘’The Mushroom’’ because of its shape and it was designed by the architect Herman Bollé. The Archaeological Museum is an archaeological museum with over 450.000 varied artefacts and monuments. The museum consists of five main sections: Prehistory, Egypt, Antiquity, Middle Ages, Coins and Medals. The Art Pavilion is an art gallery established in 1898. It is the oldest gallery in Southeast Europe designed for large, representative exhibitions. The pavilion is situated between Zrinjevac Square and the King Tomislav Square.

The Statue of the King Tomislav by Croatian sculptor Robert Frangeš Mihanović (1872-1940). King Tomislav (910 - 928) was a medieval Croatian ruler who defended Croatian territory from Hungarian attacks. He annexed the regions and for the first time united all the regions into one state. He was the first king of Croatia, crowned in the year 925. The Main Railway Station was authorized by the Royal Hungarian Government in 1890 according to the neoclassical design of Hungarian architect Ferenc Pfaff in 1892. Sculptural works were made by Hungarian sculptor Vilim Marschenko. The station building was reconstructed two times, from 1986 to 1987 and in 2006. The Mimara Museum is an art museum situated at the Roosevelt Square. Museum was opened in 1987 and created by donation of Wiltrud and Ante Topić Mimara. Ante Topić Mimara (1898 – 1987) was a painter, renovator and collector whose collection comprises of more than 3750 objects from all over the world including paintings, sculptures, glass, furnishings and textiles. Official name of the museum is the ‘’Art collection of Ante and Wiltrud Topić Mimara’’. The building is from the 19th century and it served as a gymnasium. Memorial centre - Dražen Petrović is situated at Dražen Petrović Square. Dražen Petrović (1964 – 1993) was one of the best basketball players of all times. He played for Šibenka – Šibenik, Cibona Zagreb, Real Madrid, Portland Trailblazers and New Jersey Nets. Due to his great talent and skills, he gained the nickname ‘’Basketball Mozart’’. He tragically died at the age of 28 in a car accident on the German motorway near Ingolstadt. Dražen was elected into the Basketball Hall of Fame on the 27 September 2002. In the museum you can see most of the medals, trophies, equipment and sports gear, posters and photographs from Dražen’s sports, private and public life.

About Zagreb The Croatian National Theatre is situated at the Marshall Tito Square. It is a theatre, an opera and a ballet house operated by the Ministry of Culture. Neo-baroque building was designed by the two Viennese architects Ferdinand Helmer and Hermann Fellner. At that time, they were famous for the design of several representative theatres and concert houses. Austro-Hungarian emperor Franz Joseph I (1830 1916) opened the theatre on 14 October 1895. The Croatian National Theatre is the central theatre house in Croatia and the leading Croatian actors and directors have worked here. In front of the entrance there is a fountain called ‘’ The Well of Life’’, designed by a Croatian artist and sculptor Ivan Meštrović (1883 - 1962) in 1905. Petar Preradović Square known as the Flower Square (Cvjetni trg). It was named after the Croatian army general and poet Petar Preradović (1818 - 1872). This pedestrian square is a popular meeting place famous for its flower stands where local people enjoy drinking coffee and having fun with friends in numerous cafes. The square is the venue of various events: promotions, concerts and the special atmosphere that take place during the Advent Fair. You can also see the Octagon on the square, a unique passage in Zagreb and the oldest of the kind in this part of Europe from the 19th century, Petar Preradović statue and the Orthodox church built in 1866. Botanical Garden was founded in 1889 by Antun Heinz (1861 - 1919), Professor of the University of Zagreb. The Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics owns the garden. The first plants were planted in 1892. 10 000 plant species from around the world, including exotic ones, cover a surface of 5 hectares. Park arboretum is made in the English style with flower floor in the central and west part of the garden. Medvedgrad is an old fortress built in the 13th century on the southern slopes of the Medvednica Mountain at an altitude of 593 m. This location provided a perfect position to control the surroundings and traffic routes. The question of the period and the cause of constructing Medvedgrad has not yet been fully clarified. The period between 1249 and 1254 is the most frequently mentioned as the period of its construction upon the orders of the Bishop Philip of Zagreb to defend the Kaptol and the bishop’s possessions from the attacks of the Tatars. Historians consider Medvedgrad as a classic burg with elements of high quality. A burg is a German word and signifies a fortress, a castle or a palace, a residence of local rulers and royalty, surrounded by defensive walls. Medvedgrad therefore represents the best preserved example of a medieval burg in Croatia. Around 1260, King Bela IV (1206 – 1270)

About Zagreb entrusted the fortress to the Duke Stjepko Šubić, and later it was governed by many Croatian bans and nobles. It was significantly damaged by an earthquake in 1590, and due to the consequences it was abandoned in 1602 by its last residents. Many stories and legends are connected to Medvedgrad, and in some records, it is even called the cursed city - Maledictum Castrum Medved. The most famous is the story of the Black Queen, who sold her soul to the Satan, and her screams echo in the night and her treasure is buried somewhere in the interior walls of Medvedgrad. During the seventies, an extensive archaeological research began when an early Gothic octagonal chapel Saint Philip and Jacob was discovered and fully restored. After completion of the conservation work, at the bottom of the southern wall, The Altar of the Homeland was erected in 1994, a monument to those who died during the Croatian War of Independence and a place of reverence to the Croatian homeland. The monument is assembled of cubes with carved motifs from the time of Duke Branimir, with a large cross and verses of the Croatian national anthem. In the middle there is an “eternal fire”. Medvedgrad offers a breath taking view of the city of Zagreb and by many it is regarded as the best place for watching Zagreb at night. Maksimir – Zoo located in the Park Maksimir, is a unique oasis of nature and one of the most beautiful zoos in the Central Europe. This favourite place for relaxation and leisure opened in 1925 on the Swan’s Island with only 3 foxes and 2 wild owls, and today covers an area of 7 hectares where visitors can see 275 species of animals: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates from all continents. In addition, a number of educational programmes and events aimed at better understanding of the nature and the need to protect endangered species are held in the Zoo. Therefore, you can attend the daily feeding of the animals while the Zookeepers inform and answer the visitors’ questions. Many facilities that belong to the rich cultural and historical heritage were built in the garden, such as the Tower, the Lion’s bridge with four stone lions, the Egyptians - 5 meters tall statues or the statue of a fisherman of Naples. Especially attractive is a boat trip on the lake when you can experience the Zoo from a completely different perspective.

ZAGREB SURROUNDINGS
Samobor is a small touristic town located west of Zagreb in the valley of the River Sava surrounded with Samobor Hills and the Žumberak Mountain. In the past (1242), Samobor existed as a free royal trading place, status given by the King Bela IV (1206 – 1270). The town itself is one of the favourite destinations of many citizens of Zagreb famous for its festivals, carnivals and fairs. The Old Town of Samobor is situated on the Tepec Hill from the 13th century. It has been built by the supporters of the Czech King Otokar in 1270. Today only defence tower remained. Baroque churches, the Church of St. Anastasia from the 17th century and the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Franciscan convent from the 18th century are the main attractions of the town. Veliki Tabor is a fortress and a museum from the 12th century, located three kilometres east of Desinić in Zagorje Region. The five Cornered Tower is the oldest part of the castle built in the 12th century. Other towers were built in the 15th and the 16th century. Croatian noble family Rattkay were the owners until 1793 and they built most of the castle. Oton Iveković (1869 – 1939), a Croatian painter, owned the castle from 1927 until 1935 and today it is owned by the state. Marija Bistrica is a little town and municipality located in Krapina – Zagorje Region, 40km from the capital city of Zagreb. In Marija Bistrica there is an old Marian shrine of the Black Madonna visited by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year. In 1545 a local priest hid the wonder- working statue of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus from the Turks in a secret location. In 1588 bright light shone from the place where it was buried and, according

to the records, it was discovered again. On 3 October 1998, the Pope John Paul II (1920 – 2005) visited Marija Bistrica and beatified Croatian Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac (1898 – 1960). Krapina, mentioned for the first time in 1193, is located in Zagorje Region. In the 14th century Krapina was a free royal trading place and a residence of the Croatian governor until the end of the 15th century. Krapina is best known for the remains belonging to Neanderthals, found by an archaeologist and a paleontologist Dragutin Gorjanović Kramberger (1856 – 1936) in a cave on a hill called Hušnjakovo near Krapina in 1899. Today, in front of the cave there are reconstructions of pre-historic men and animals. There is the Evolution Museum opened on the site with a permanent exhibition. Trakoščan is one of the most attractive and most visited castles located in the Northern Croatia (Varaždin Region). It was built in the 13th century as a fortress. In the 16th century it was managed by the emperor Maximilian II (1527 -1576) who gave the estate to a governor and a bishop of Zagreb Joseph II Drašković in 1569 for the services rendered and later it became a family heritage. Nikola Zrinski was the owner of the property in the middle of the 17th century for several years (1645 – 1651). In the 19th century, it was renovated in neo-gothic style surrounded with an artificial lake, a garden and a forest – park. The Castle Museum with its collection was established in 1953. The Republic of Croatia owns the castle today and it is opened to visitors all the time. Gornja Stubica – The Peasant’s Revolt Museum is located in Zagorje Region, situated in the baroque palace of the Oršić family from the 18th century. The palace was built in 1756, last members of the Oršić family left the palace in 1924. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the palace was completely renovated and the Paesant’s Revolt Museum was placed in it. The Museum collects materials and objects divided into three collections: cultural and historical, art and ethnographic which also includes archaeological findings from the ancient town of Konjšćina. Every year the Medieval Knight’s Tournament is organized in the Oršić Castle in June and there you can try fencing or participate in medieval soccer. Varaždin is located in the Northern Croatia, 81 km away from Zagreb and it is a very popular tourist destination in the summer time for its rich cultural heritage, many museums, galleries, sport and recreation facilities and

traditional cuisine. First written historical name for Varaždin was Garestin on the 20 August 1181. City was a free royal borough declared by the Hungarian King Andrew II in 1209 and became military and economic centre of the Northern Croatia. The Old Town is a medieval fortress and a biggest tourist attraction in the city. Construction began in the 14th century and afterwards Gothic rounded towers were added. In 1756, Varaždin became the capital city of Croatia and it housed the Croatian Sabor (Parliament) and the Royal Croatian Council. Most of the churches and buildings were built in the Baroque style. In 1776, a fire destroyed most of the town causing administrative institutions moving to Zagreb. The town was completely rebuilt in the 19th century and in the 20th century it developed into the industrial centre of north-western Croatia.

Plitvice Lakes National Park
is located in the mountainous karst area of Lika-Senj Region. It is the oldest national park in the SouthEast Europe and the largest and most visited of Croatia’s national parks with more than 1.000,000 visitors every year. It was founded in 1949 and, for its beauty of 16 lakes arranged in cascades, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
The Brijuni National Park is located south-west of the Istrian peninsula. It was
founded in 1983 and made a group of 14 small islands. In 1893 Viennese magnate Paul Kupelwieser bought the whole archipelago and built the exclusive resort with hotels, restaurants, casino, yacht harbour, golf course and the Brijuni Island became the prestige resort for Viennese upper class and European bourgeois and aristocrats. In 1945 the Brijuni Island became a personal State Summer Residence of President of Yugoslavia Josip Broz Tito. World famous film stars and states’ representatives like Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Gina Lollobrigida, Nehru, Nasser and others visited Tito on his islands. There are many archaeological sites on the island and remains of the two Roman villas from the 2nd century BC, the Byzantine palace and St. Mary’s Church from the 13th century. One of the attractions are over 200 footprints of the dinosaurs that have been discovered at four sites.

Pula Amphitheatre
Pula is located in the south-western part of the Istrian peninsula. It is the largest city and administrative centre of the Istrian Region with a population of 90 000. The city was founded 3000 years ago on the Kaštel hill inhabited by Histri (Illyrian tribe). Throughout the history, Pula has always been a very important port because of its geographic position. There are still remains of fortresses made by the Austrian Empire to protect their navy in the port. The most attractive monuments are the Amphitheatre (one of the six largest Roman arenas in the world), the Arch of the Sergii and the Temple of Rome and Augustus from the 1st century. The Pula Aquarium is the biggest one in Croatia situated in the fortress Verudela. The city has a long tradition of tourism, shipbuilding, fishing and winemaking. TOURISM OFFICE PULA PULA INFO

Rovinj is situated on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula. It is a fishing port and one of the most popular tourist resorts. The St. Euphemia’s Basilica, baroque church built in 1736, dominates the town. The bell-tower of the church with a statue of the patron saint is over 61m high and was built 70 years earlier (1654-1680). Relics of St. Euphemia are kept in sarcophagus behind the altar. Rovinj area is of outstanding natural beauty, with magical coastline with Alpine pine trees including the archipelago of 19 islands. There are numerous restaurants with great local food and fine shops throughout the small streets where you can buy nice hand made souvenirs. Romantic sunset in Rovinj is definitely not to be missed... Rijeka is Croatian main and largest maritime port located on Kvarner Bay and it is a centre of Primorsko – Goranska Region. It is an administrative, economic, cultural and industrial centre of the western Croatia and has a population of 128.624 inhabitants (2011). Shipbuilding with two shipyards (3rd May and Viktor Lenac) and maritime transport are the most important industry of the Rijeka area. The town was named after Rječina (a river that is the town's main waterway). The city of Rijeka is mentioned for the first time in documents of Venetian merchants as St. Vitus Rijeka in 1281. Main attractions for its visitors are: the Trsat Castle (1288), the Shrine of our Lady Trsat (the largest pilgrimage centre of the western Croatia), Petar Kružić Stairway (over 500 steps built in 1531), the Former Governor's Palace (1892), the Church of our Lady of Lourdes, the Capuchin Monastery (1904-1929) and St. Vitus Cathedral (1638, the only Baroque rotunda built in Croatia). Two main attractions are the Sea Organ (waves pushed by the sea producing sound through the stone stairs) and The Greeting to the Sun (urban installation that consists of three hundred multi-layered glass plates, under the glass conduction there are photo-voltage solar modules through which symbolic communication with nature is made). The city offers numerous excursion programmes and activities for an active holiday, like visiting museums, exhibitions, coffee shops, pastry shops, handmade souvenirs shops, restaurants and tasting indigenous delicacies.

WAY TO THE ADRIATIC Hvar
Hvar is an island in the Adriatic Sea situated between the islands of Brač, Vis and Korčula. Pharos was a colony founded by the ancient Greeks in 384 BC in the place of the present Stari Grad and it was one of the oldest towns in Europe. The Mediterranean nature, rich historical heritage and culture, atmosphere and adventure make Hvar one of the most popular destinations among tourists and domestic visitors. The main tourist centre is Hvar Town, with a port packed with luxury yachts during the season and parties in the clubs all night long that attract young visitors from all over the world. The Island of Hvar is a very famous winemaking zone with many vineyards on the southern side of the island. Pakleni otoci (Hell Islands) is an archipelago that consists of several small islands covered with pine trees including nudistswimming areas, fine restaurants and a nautical marina in Palmižana. All of the islands can be accessed by the organised regular boat connection from the port of Hvar.

Kornati National Park... 89 unforgettable islands, islets and reefs The Kornati National Park is often mentioned as “nautical paradise” in tourist publications. And really, in “slalom” sailing through the 89 unforgettable islands, islets and reefs in the Kornati National Park, you will test all of your nautical skills, particularly if the weather puts in some effort...
• A geomorphological monument of nature • At the foothill of Mosor mountain • 25 km from Split • Discovered in 1903 • Constant temperature of 15⁰C • Guided tours • Contact: Marko Punda +385 98 749 000 • www.visitdugopolje.com Photo by: Tourist Board Dugopolje Archives
Hiking trails from the locality of Plitača in the Dugopolje field lead to the Ljubljan summit (1262 m), and hiking trails from the hamlet of Punde in the settlement of Kotlenice, in the vicinity of the Vranjača cave, lead to the Vickov stup summit (1325 m). A different, less challenging and shorter, trail leads from the hamlet of Balići (Džakići) in Dugopolje through a smaller cave by the name of Balića peć (King’s Furnace) to the remains of the Illyrian fortress Gradina (480 m). The recently founded Croatian hiking society ‘’Ljubljan’’ from Dugopolje will be in charge of managing and maintaining the trails.
Welcome to the Nature Park Biokovo! Biokovo, the mountain that emerges from the sea offering from its tips and gazebos unforgettable panoramic views of the Makarska Riviera and the areas around Biokovo. Other than its position, Biokovo is unique also because of its geomorphology and its biological diversity, which were the main reasons the Biokovo Mountain was proclaimed a Nature Park in 1981.
