Safe House
Project Type: Housing ( Nonprofit Organization) Studio 2: Manfred Yuen, Charles Lai Date: April, 2017 Location: Yau Mai Tei, Hong Kong This project is located at Temple Street, Yau Ma Tei, one of the famous and bustling places in Hong Kong. Athought the bright side on the temple street, the main idea of this project is trying to record the relationship between gang and prostitutes and discover prostitutes needs. After the Analysis, the Mapping findings and research survey from “ The Action For REACH OUT’, a Nonprofit Organization, I have discovered the number of on prostitutes who used to effect by violence from the consumers are very high. therefore, this project aims to solve the above issue for prostitutes. The site total area is by 6m x 6m x 6m. It is an alteration and addition project located at Chi Hing building, a 46 years-old building, the construction method subtracts a part of the building and insert the new house into the building.

According to the survey by The Action for REACH OUT, there are 30 % of prostitutes were treated violently. In the Among of 30%, there 93.7% had 1 to 6 times experience, 1.7% had 6-9 and up to 10 times experience. The situation is very serious. Safety should be priority to improve the situation. Transform idea from Denmark is a good way to start. Sources: http://www.afro.org.hk/pdf/survey/201306_survey_result_final.pdf

Architectural of Hell Project Type: Drawing - drawing Studio 1: Manfred Yuen, Charles Lai Date: December ,2016
“Beam, Slab, Column”, those structure terms are usually seen on architecture/ building. As a fresh, new architecture student, we shall have a basic concept on those definitions and try to apply on the proposed drawings to become a building. Furthermore, as an architect, we shall approach our ideas on the building and transform to a solid form, therefore, the basic knowledge we shall not ignore. This exercise objective to develop our knowledge of that architectural language and present them on the section drawing. Meanwhile, besides the knowledge we shall locate, the tutors have chosen two topics for this project, and my project thesis is “Hell”. When I receive the topic on my drawing. There are three words came to my mind immediatelyBuddhist, punishment and blood. Therefore, my drawing is main concept is transform those three ideas into a building.
This project aims to transform from an active motion to a 3-dimensional volume. my drawing concept came from famous activities - flipping pen.
After I decided my concept image, I drew the outline of the object (yellow) and the overlapping part (purple) to prepare the model development. Afterwards, I extruded my model to become a 3-dimensional object.
In the first step, I extruded the model without pattern and logic, as we do not have any ideas on what is architecture, our tutor encourage us on “less thinking, just do it theory for the model development.

Subtraction Details
Next, to prepare more space for the section drawing, I decided to subtract the middle part of the model and capture the geometry details for my further drawing.
Final Model Layout
After researching on the reference concept and photo, i have decided interior drawing will presented in Chinese Buddhist ideas. Hand sketching is a good way for me to create different spaces and activities. For the sketching drawing, i have drawn out five screens f or reference and located them on the section drawing. In Chinese, we believed that when people pass away, the spirit will judge by a judge-men who is governance the hell. Therefore a judge-men in the middle of the “Hell” to “calculate” their sins and decide the punishment.

Interior Details
This details is base on a report in South-Korea. The report said a girl who had visited hell while she was sleeping. One of the details are very interesting. She mentioned there was a grant wheel will chase and crash people in a sharply slope. Therefore, I try to recreate that scene and fill into the section.

Point, Line, Space
Project Type: Physical Model - Cube Studio 1: Manfred Yuen, Charles Lai Date: October, 2016
“Cubism”, an art movement at 20 century has influenced architecture and took us in a new era, “Modern Art”. This chapter had achieved lots of “Master” in the architectural field, like Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Mies Van Der Rohe etc. Those architects have established a standard line for us to follow and study. As a freshman in architecture school, the first lesson at design studio we talk about the basic elements of architecture. Point, Line and Space are import elements on architecture. In this exercise, we had created the physical model by using cardboard, from a standard 15cm x 15cm x15cm perfect cube to design a basement for our final model. We have developed the basic knowledge on architectural skill and supported on our concept development. Therefore, we did a lot of experiment on this exercise. We had created difference style and format to observe the component on complexity space and most importantly the theory on “Think out of the boxes”
Cube with base - Isometric View
There are multiple concepts which we need to apply our model, there are Penetration, Rotation, Fragmentation, Dissolving and Interlocking. Before built a physical model, I decided to draw down the image on those key words for reference and create difference space on the model.
The first Model needs to build a 15m(W) x 15m(L) x 15m(H). The measurement needs to be precise. As we need to design a building in the further, A mistake on dimensions or miss a line will become a magnificent disaster. Therefore, as a student, we have to develop a clear image on accurate drawing and measurement.
After the concept drawing, we had drawn another picture without looking our sketch book. It is an example for us to trust on feeling, think outside of the “box” and logic.
For this drawing, it finished in 30 seconds with blind and one single line, the picture will give us an example of “stop think, just do it”
Concept Drawing
Perfect Cube
This Model is a first trial on applying the concept from 2-dimensional drawing into a 3-dimensional object, As this cube was a prototype, it only cover a few moves. Although space is not complex enough, it gave me a general concept for the next model.
Model 01 - Trial 01
This Model is a final model cube. It employed different scale and concept from the concept drawing. Furthermore, this model I am generally focusing on the “6 side thinking theory and it is a guide line for me to create a complex area/ space in a limited space.
Model 02 - 6 Side Cube
After complete the 6-side model, a supporting basement needed to form. The basement model is a combination of the previous design stage. It intended to create a complexity space, maintain the hierarchy, the connection with different component and sometimes we need to trust our feeling. Furthermore, as the basement is designed for the cube to sit on, a stable structure is magnificent important. For the basement, I had increased the number of the cardboard and form the cross section at the bottom, it can increase strength on the basement. Also, the head of the basement, I designed it in a downwards direction to create a different geometry and makes the product become solid. Finally, I have built a reference drawing of model and cut out some section for exploring spaces.

Project Type: Hand Sketching Studio 2: Manfred Yuen, Charles Lai Date: February ,2017 Location: Yau Mai Tei, Hong Kong,
The exercise is focused on details drawing, For drawings scale are 1:10, we need to concentrate the details, such as the water bubble, the overlapping part of clothes and structure details. It develops our observation on an object, As the master, Mies van der Rohe said:“ God is in the details. The product is a combination of many small details. Therefore, as an architecture student, we should value every single part of details much as possible. This serious of drawing located in a famous night market, Temple Street. We try to capture the activities during the site visit and combine with the basic architecture element to finish the drawing.

Project Type: Physical Modeling (Group project) Studio 2: Manfred Yuen, Charles Lai Date: February ,2017 Location: No.148, Yau Mai Tei, Hong Kong Work with Mark Lee Duty: Digital - AutoCad Drawing, Windows and Furniture Design Physical - Craftsmanship on all Details This exercise is a follow-up exercise on the Detail Sketching. We are looking an existing building to rebuild in a physical model for the case study. The study model is located in No. 148 temple street. For this project, we had visited the site the take photo and record the dimension for the reference. As we are studying in scale ratio, it is a good chance for learning architectural element.
