SALT SPRAY BUFFER (COAST LIVE OAK)
SAWMILL

The Defense Fuel Support Point in San Pedro, CA, originally established for jet fuel storage during World War II, now stands as a site with neglected facilities and fuel contamination impacting the environment. This site here is part of a larger masterplan using trees for phytoremediation. Harvested trees are cleaned and reused here. This sawmill aims to break away from the industrial past using landscape intervention.

SITE FUNCTION

VISION

This project was a collaboration with Miguel Auntre Olalia. We worked together on site modeling, and I created the renderings seen here. Our goal was to reimagine what a brownfield site could look like. This project draws inspiration from the fields of architecture, urban design, and forestry, showcasing how disciplines that serve the built environment can collaborate to form a cohesive site design.

HARVESTED LOGS

The logs harvested from phytoremediated trees are transported to the site for storage.

LOG STORAGE

Harvested logs are stored under solar panel shade structures and prepared for processing.

MANUFACTURE FACILITIES

LANDSCAPE MECHANISM

HOMEWARE Manufactures furniture, home goods, etc.

STATIONARY Manufactures office supplies, utensils, etc.

CONVEYOR

Transports lumber & products throughout site.

SAWMILL Process logs into lumber.

SAWMILL

The logs are processed, and the lumber is distributed to designated areas for further processing or shipment.

SALT SPRAY BUFFER

Coast live oaks, being large and salt tolerant, will serve as a buffer against salt spray from the nearby coast, helping to protect the wooden structures on site.

SHIPMENT

Lumber & lumber products are prepared for distribution to customers.

SOLAR PANEL STORAGE

This serves a dual purpose: providing shade for the logs and generating power for the site. The panels are angled to maximize sunlight intake.

IMAGE SAMPLING SCRIPT

IMAGE SAMPLED: HEIGHTMAP

OUTCOMES

This project involved experimenting with Image Sampling in Grasshopper 3D. I believe this experimentation holds significant potential for site design due to the unique forms it can generate.

The script here utilizes the Image Sampler node to shape the form by referencing a height map. The brightness values of the image are analyzed, with lighter areas corresponding to greater heights. This creates a dynamic surface where the geometry is directly influenced by the image’s hue variations, allowing for unique attributes to influence form. After the form is created, a series of planes are used to extract the topography in both 3D and 2D, providing a detailed representation of the surface.
