SARAH N Sarah makes abstract oil paintings which in the physical world have very at surfaces and yet create an intense sense of depth and space. She Chooses pigments for the role they play in the history of trade and visual culture from the prehistoric era to the present day, so that the pigments hold a kind of quiet symbolism within a piece. She researches and paints in her studio every day. The act of making is an act of remembering. Her titles often reect these meanings. An invitation is extended to the viewer to fall into the spaces to get a little lost and to remember. Sarah has a long term interest in trade and its impact on people. She has an MSc in Development Studies, has lived and studied in China and travelled widely. She is interested in the way that trade impacts on people and place. Trade can be traced through the dispersal of pigment away from their geographical origins over the millennia. Visual culture gives us clues to earlier developments than the written word, seeming to suggest something universal in human experience and expression. Transforming these pigments into paintings is a daily task.

N

ick’s interest in nature and ecology, but mostly his obsession with colour is what drives his artistic passions and so inspired by the natural world he has forged an international reputation for his distinguished work.

Painting directly to canvas with a limited palette of six pigments that of course, aligning himself with the French Impressionists, does not include black. Much like a water colourist he uses the white of the support to give luminosity below numerous layers of translucent colour glazes, he achieves the secondary and tertiary colours by successive layering.

NAT Nathaniel is an American visual artist working primarily in fine art photography and abstract mixed media. Nathaniel has a deep professional background in photography and the graphic arts and is the author of numerous photography books in worldwide distribution. ALLAN “C

reativity requires the courage to let go of certainties." Erich Fromm

Allan paints in Cornwall, London and Wales. His work embraces abstract and figurative styles, painted in thick impasto oil, on large canvases with palette knives and squeegees. He says, "the power and texture of oil paint applied with a palette knife or squeegee, dictates I loosen up and chance plays a significant role"! Consistent with his postgraduate studies in psychology and surrealism, his consequent therapeutic work in the mental health and education professions, Allan’s working methodology is a faith in the artistic principle of creativity, as a fundamental coping device for healthy everyday living. The impasto palette knifed works of Sir Kyffin Williams and the squeegee paintings of Gerhard Richter influence Allan’s work. In particular Richter's polemic that "almost every work of art is an analogy" appeals to his sense of what it is to be human. "Art is making sense and giving shape to that sense. JUDITH My recent work has been influenced by spending time in Cornwall and looking at the paintings of the St Ives artists, including Peter Lanyon. I have been using collage to experiment with creating a new dimension to the landscape, using line to give energy to, and to help capture the particular mood of, a place. I am continuing this idea with my work in paint on canvas too. In addition, I continue to draw from the figure, trying to keep the energy and essence of the pose. “These figures are not the hour long slog pursued in the academic life class, but have the feeling of imminent change and therefore truly ‘life'.” (Frank Low, Art Critic)

CHELSEA Chelsea uses materials and techniques associated with both disciplines: painting and sculpture. Starting with unusual bases like concrete, steel or copper, she pours or dribbles paint, layers plaster or delicate gold leaf, then scrapes, cracks or corrodes her medium to get the effect she is searching for.

TIMOTHY

ondon born Timothy has evolved into an abstract artist. A Specialist interior decorator for 25 years, completing studies at Vauxhall college and South Bank University. His early experience of High-end decorative finishing began at 5 star hotels such as Hyde Park and Grosvenor house. This creation themed "Nature" was conceived through his regular therapeutic walks across many of the National Trust's extensive woodlands, coastal and countryside trails. His intent is to express the energy, organic movement, reflections, shadows and textures seen and felt throughout our valuable natural environments.

KATI

ati was born in Hong Kong, China in 1983 to an English Father and Australian Mother. She spent her early childhood in Shouson Hill on Hong Kong Island’s steep slopes and palm trees of Deep Water Bay. Her family moved to the UK for the majority of her education, with trips to Australia to indulge in family, culture and art, the relationship between the earth, the elements and expression being engraved at an early age. Mark making and creative expression being vital to existence. Aged 19, Kati moved to New York City where she worked with legendry designer Diane Von Furstenburg. She received her BA (Hons) from Ravensbourne College of Design & Communication in 2005 and later continued her study with The University of The Arts London. Following a diverse career as a fashion designer, she has worked for some of the world’s top luxury labels and international brands in London, New York and Asia. Her love of colour, combinations and expression intuitively draws her creative outlay to abstract painting. Kati moved from Brixton to Surrey in 2016 where she is part of the Studio 42 Collective, with whom she has started to exhibit and grow her practise.

EMMA F Emma works from her bright and cheerful studio in south west London. She mainly paint still life paintings with a quirky twist. She says of her work ” I am drawn to beautiful forms whether they are manmade or natural. My aim is to show my appreciation of the simple beauty of such objects by their sensitive portrayal in my paintings. In my work I'll often draw and paint the forms many times, scratching and scraping through to previous layers to create a broadly descriptive, but beautiful image. My aim is not to ‘copy' the object in paint, but rather to describe and celebrate what I see with mark making skills that have developed into my personal style as an artist.”

ue studied at Croydon College of Art and then followed a career in graphic design, working as both in-house and as a freelance designer within publishing, marketing and product development. Art in one form or another has always consumed a large part of her life and after inspiring journeys to South Africa and Australia she left the world of digital design to rekindle her love of painting. She works with acrylics, painting abstract landscapes on canvas, with texture being an important ingredient to the finished work. The paintings are completely from imagination and the challenge she always sets herself is to capture an atmospheric scene, a mysterious place where the colours and shapes can mean many different things that can change as the work is viewed. “Every painting is a journey that takes me along many different directions to its final destination and when it is done I often wonder how did I get there. “ Alongside the fantasy world of landscapes, Sue also paints on canvases with irregular sides. As part of looking to create something a little different, these geometric shapes and designs have evolved. This style of painting is a completely different discipline being quite structured against the free flowing fluidity of the landscapes. The works can be hung any which way. Sue works from Wimbledon Art Studios and her home studio. 46

A

love of landscape is central to my work. I am always drawn to the sea, lakes and rivers. Echoes, distortions and reflections create interesting effects to work with. Originally from Guernsey, the stunning and diverse landscape, inspired me to develop my method of working. I love drawing and photographing on location, in different times of day and various weather. I use a combination of the sketches and photos to start the paintings. I enjoy working with a variety of oils, pigments, varnishes and inks. I revel in the investigative process sanding back and revealing sections of the image. I tip my canvases to allow the paint to pool and drip. I enjoy finding new textures, and experimenting with oil and water based paint. Salt and thin areas of plaster change the character of the image. I've currently been focusing on London. The city is such a fascinating beautiful subject. Mist and smog cast a haunting veil over the landscape. I'm interested in the Victorian gothic architecture reflected in modern glass. I also work on Commission and have been fortunate enough to work in different areas of the country and abroad. During the last few years, I've done projects based on the Madagascan rainforest and Hungzhou in China.

BETH Internationally exhibited artist Beth studied Textile Design at The University of the West of England and graduated in 2004.From Bristol she moved to London for a little under a decade, working in costume for film, television and theatre and teaching arts and craft workshops. In 2009, Beth was offered a post as an Artist in residence at Wycombe Abbey School for Girls. The residency helped her focus and build a strong foundation for her practise, exploring both femininity and textures and introducing her to the concept of Wabi-Sabi. Returning to London in 2011 Beth has been exhibiting in art fairs and exhibitions both nationally and internationally since. �The foundation of my current body of work lies in the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi: exploring the beauty found within transience. From finding a rotting garment by a stream to a stream of consciousness, my current collection travels through ethereal, abstract landscape style paintings into figurative ink drawings that investigate the subconscious. My work is extremely cathartic. I spend hours slowly manipulating the ink to find the right composition and sometimes when its dry writing streams of consciousness on top of the work. The writing for me is an important element, as a dyslexic it can at times be a huge struggle, but at other times the thoughts flow and the time flies. My work therefore is about time and energy and expresses and exposes me as a person.�

HENRIETTA Henrietta paints abstracts in oil on canvas in which she aims to evoke a time and a place, creating spaces full of light and memory. “It is not the appearance of a chosen motif but its own energies and mystery that form the heart of my paintings.“ Nature is the basis, the starting point, for the paintings, which rapidly take on a direction of their own where the dancing light or the feel of the wind becomes the main focus. They are compositions woven from images of the natural world. “It is the power and energy of nature that excites me. Light and movement allow the creation of the space in my work, often opening up huge vistas. The finished pieces range from almost totally abstract compositions evoking a sense of place to more easily recognisable landscape images: the natural world modulated by time and season, disclosed by visual texture and colour” Henrietta's works can be found in collections in New York, Houston, Sydney, Perth, Paris as well as the UK

GAIL Gail lives and works as a painter in Cambridge (UK). She achieved a first class BA (hons) degree in Fine Art at Exeter College of Art and Design in 1981, after which she lived in Madrid for a year. She has been painting all her life! She has spent a lot of time in Andalucia (where her ancestors came from) and also, Italy and France. She has had solo shows both locally and in London, Scandinavia and Spain. ‘My work reflects a world of memory and dream. I am inspired by the natural world and how it touches us at a deeper level. I grew up in Cornwall - whose wild beauty is a strong influence as is the light and colour of Andalucia. My ancestors are from Cordoba, hence my name. I live and work in Cambridge; the ever-changing skies and flat watery strips of land are perfect for dreaming and reflecting. I am passionate about the process of painting - and work very intuitively building up layers of different materials, which can include plaster, paper and both acrylic and oil paint. I love playing with the tactile qualities of the materials and also the illusory aspects of painting. I find the process transformational and I really live each painting as I make it. The most exciting moment is when, and I can never quite predict when this will happen, a painting takes on a life of its own. l then have to surrender to it and let it take me where I need to go.'

ADRIENNE Adrienne paints in oils on canvas or linen and sometimes on silk or wood. “My latest work is abstract paintings suggesting land and seascapes. “It is imagination, it comes from nowhere and is not worked out in advance and decided upon in terms of content or shape or colour - it forms itself, the colours merge and it is allowed to be. I like the image to form itself as I start to work and build up layers of colour and shade. I am interested in painting in a seamless way avoiding lines and edges and even brush strokes. Lines and edges define things and influence how we perceive them so I like to remove any lines and edges by merging colour and form and so make suggestions to the viewer that might trigger a memory or feeling of somewhere or something. This smooth, seamlessness I think suggests a transience and so fluid subjects like air or skies or memories can be caught and held for our gaze. The work is about potential expressed in a non verbal language and because it is not prescriptive it is more open to allowing our own creative and emotional interpretation�

RIKKE Beginning from research and intense conceptualising, Danish artist Rikke seeks the unknown mysteries in life. Considering all life forms and their basic similarities, she looks for balance in nature, and explores the light and the dark side of this organic process. In her artwork, Rikke invites the viewer for a journey through inner and outer spaces - to bring both worlds into balance and observe them. She transforms emotions into unpredictable forms in her abstract paintings. At the moment of painting, Rikke is not sure of what will finally happen on canvas, leaving it up to chance. This results in a spontaneous element of expression, going with the flow and exploring many possibilities of visualisation. Using a microscope to study cell structures, she is intrigued by the darker aspects of organic and cellular life.

ANTONIO I imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination is endless. Antonio was born in Italy in 1965, both parents were Sicilian and he spent his early years in Italy, moving back to England at the age of 13. His family roots in Sicily influenced his taste in art and music bringing a broad spectrum of culture, light, colour and sound which are evident in his work today. For Antonio the link between art and music is intrinsic and the line between the two is blurred, he feels the music and paints his feelings. “I don't really know if I have an artist's statement or style, I don't really see the need. I love painting to music and I never know what I'm doing until I look at a blank canvas, and at that point the colours, music and inspiration hit me, and it all starts to flow. Art speaks for itself, especially abstract expressionism, why should I complicate things by expounding on how or why I do what I do? I paint what I paint based on how I feel, and I try to paint from my heart. I do my best to present movement, emotion, energy, and visual excitement. I never shy away from bold colours. Colour is life! Colours make people feel happy, and happiness is what life is all about.�

ELIZABETH P Elizabeth is a British ceramicist based in Manchester. Her distinctive style emerged as she was studying fine art, where she specialised in wall sculpture and installation. ROSE With a background in architectural design, Rose has created a series of paintings called the ‘Indigo & Blue' series. These illustrate buildings, some of which are iconic, and the designing of these structures around core conceptual ideas. Each painting has a blue background which simulates the traditional paperbased reproduction of a technical drawing of the early 20th century. These prints were blue with white lined drawings. The size of each canvas is based on the ‘Golden Rectangle'. This is an idealised proportion where the ratio of the longer side to the shorter is the golden ratio used for millennia which is pleasing to the eye and works on the proportion of phi = 1.6180339887.

PAUL B Paul specialises in contemporary semi-abstract seascapes and landscapes. The two themes are very different in mood, style and perspective, but all endeavour to generate a sense of intimacy and isolation while leaving the subject open to interpretation. The intention is to create from memory to produce finished work that is abstracted and more expressional than representational. Paul’s main aim is to create work that is most definitely painted; an antidote to mass produced visuals we consume everyday. MARCUS Marcus is a contemporary artist and painter, living and working in London. ​Marcus’ paintings are a series of process led works. He uses a combination of layering, distressing and blending to build a multifaceted surface, adding a sense of depth and drama to the work. nspired by the old master, but retaining a very contemporary approach to the nude, William’s paintings are stunning in their exploration of the body, water and light. “I have always been inspired by the human figure and the effect light has upon it. I have used various ways of portraying the body such as dance, swimming and also boxing but it is the body itself that interests me rather than the activities in particular. It is the physicality of the form and the beauty of the athletic figure that makes me want to paint.” “I usually have an idea of how I want the painting to look but in some pieces the original idea moves into something else and I leave some of the older workings, the initial sketches and drawing, the structure as I love to leave that energy visible. I try to convey emotionally charged work using light and shadow as well as rich and contrasting colour. I want a level of realism but I also want to escape from the confines it can impose and react to the paint and image in a more expressive way.” William uses lots life drawing for reference but information and ideas come from all areas including films, books and magazines, which are all utilized to reinforce the imagery of the painting. Klimt, Bacon, Schiele, Leonardo Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Waterhouse are some of the artists that he has studied and that have had a great influence on his work. 104

mĂŠlie is a French-Swiss artist. The origin of her work lies mainly in a questioning of memory, perception of landscape and the relationship between natural elements. Each light of a country, a place offering it a special harmony. It is in this sense she loves to travel, to find her first impression on things. To do this she needs to always have a fresh look. She searches for the first sensation, the feeling where the landscape she met expresses a truth. She has this need in her work to arrive at a neutral place, or a virgin place where everything needs to be felt for the first time. Therefore, moving from place to place, she always seeks the feeling of renewal. Her work over the last ten years has focused on water and aquatic landscapes and began in France in front of the grand spectacle of marine landscapes of the Atlantic coast, later in the more intimate, rivers and mountains in France and Spain. The memory of water is left by the more or less ephemeral footprints in other elements. Earth, rock, wind, are the memories of these flows.

FINTAN Fintan's method of painting is characterised by an immediacy of process and an urgency of vision, which he has been developing over several years. Despite the appearance of serendipity, Fintan's technique involves constant assessment, measurement and exploration of pigments and their configurations, combined with varnishes, oils and a variety of materials. The challenge that Fintan's art constitutes his motivation - that is to create resonances between or among the senses by exploiting the ever-changing detail of light and texture. His abstracts are worlds eliciting a multitude of emotional and intellectual responses that we, as viewers, must resolve. Fintan was born in Dublin and has spent his adult life in Ireland, Spain and Germany (his current home). y recent works lean more towards abstract expressionism than my earlier works. With these paintings I am concerned more with conveying the feeling and emotions as opposed to an accurate representation of the physical form. Although I am using the human form to express this, these are not portraits.

For me, colours carry energy and I feel charged when surrounded by intense colour. We are surrounded by energy and vibrations and as individuals we all emit this at varying frequencies. You sometimes hear the sayings ‘you’re looking very vibrant’ or ‘I’ve got a bad vibe’ or ‘my spirit just don’t take to this person…’ or many words spoken that make reference to the aura/ spirit/ vibe/ energy of an individual. This is what I am trying to capture and convey through my paintings The movement in my paintings symbolise the life flow that moves within and surrounds us.

LAURA B Laura is a London based Italian artist. She studied painting in Venice at the Academy of Fine Art and sculpture at TAM Art Metal-Working School in Pietrarubbia (Pesaro-Urbino), Italy, supervised by sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro. The tendency towards nothingness is inexorable and universal and even the things that have corporeity not have an illusion of stability. As things start to transform become more irregular and interesting. Nothing that exists is free of imperfections, and everything is in a constant state of becoming or dissolving. When things are close to non-existence become naturally more delicate and evocative. In my work, I am intrigued to see how science and art are connected; I try to strike a balance between painting, collage and installation. It revolves around the concept of Wabi-Sabi, transformation, time and connections. In my recent paintings I worked from a mix of papers and my own photographs, either transcribed intact or altered to create a new composition. Through the painting process I try gently to heighten the qualities in the picture that first caught my attention.

AISLING Aisling holds an MFA from Central Saint Martins, UK and a BFA (First Class Hons) from CAMM, IRE. She makes abstract oil paintings about the physical act of painting, the materiality of it as a medium and how it can be structured on canvas. Each painting is constructed to a point of completion through a process of paint layering and specific use of vinyl tape. It is then deconstructed through the removal of tape, revealing painted under and over layers; a method of finding and loosing the painting until visually robust. Aisling’s practice examines the consequence of the mark and the inevitable conversation it sparks; possible definites and definite failures. Her approach to painting is playful even irresponsible at times; a concoction of ultimate violation and ultimate indulgence. Aisling is the recipient of the Freyer Award in recognition of excellence for painting from the Royal Dublin Society Art Awards. She was shortlisted for the 2018 John Moore’s painting prize, Jacksons Open painting prize (commended entry) and the Visual Arts Open. State Magazine (issue 23) has listed her as ‘one to watch’, Fujitsu selected her for a 2017 ad campaign and the Good Art Guide (issue 4) chose her as their 2017 cover artist winner. Prior to commencing her Fine Art education, Aisling toured internationally with ‘Riverdance – The Show’ as an Irish dancer performing in over 400 cities covering 43 countries over 6 continents. The experience of working as a professional dancer emerges in her art through gestural and rhythmical applications of paint.

VIRGINIA

was raised at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, where the history and lore of the gold and silver mines gave me an early understanding of metal. Over the past 17 years, I've been refining a technique combining the ignitive force of casting with the delicacy of weaving to create woven bronze sculptures that evoke both literal and emotional interpretation. I sculpt each base in wax and then cast them into bronze. I then weld spines to the base and weave the thin bronze wire, and sometimes beads or other objects, around the spines. After the weaving is complete, a patina is applied. Sometimes the shapes that emerge are extremely deliberate, while other times they evolve during the process of creating them. Combining bronze casting and weaving connects me to some of the most ancient human activities, and offers a way of lending grace and movement to bronze.

RALUCA Raluca was born on 9 December 1980 in Cluj-Napoca city, which is situated in the heart of Transylvania, a region with a rich political and cultural life even since ancient times. After she graduated from the High-School of Art “R. Ladea”, in the autumn of 1999, she enrolled at the University of Visual Arts and Design “Ion Andreescu” from Cluj, where she studied Painting for six years; this period of her life played a decisive role in her formation as an artist. The next two years following the graduation from the university she taught Painting and Drawing at a school in Cluj, which was a good opportunity for her to acquaint with the spontaneity of children’s creations and their magic universe. She moved to Rome and recently in Naples where she now lives and works.

JARED Jared is a London based artist. Following a prominent career as a fashion stylist that spanned over a decade, Jared’s focus turned to a career in art. While his work as a stylist ultimately focused on achieving visual perfection, his art draws on the very opposite, celebrating not the flawlessness, but the flaw. It demonstrates a visceral rawness that nonetheless retains a haunting beauty through its composition. His work is boldly expressive. Texture and the use of unassuming mediums are played with in a refreshing way. Layering mediums at first appear aggressive, but subtly so. ernando is a contemporary Spanish painter whose otherworldly canvases blur the boundaries between imagination and reality. The artist’s bold, ethereal compositions explore grand themes of time, light and the human condition. 'I believe that my paintings encapsulate life,' says Fernando. We love the artist’s swirling, mystical style and the way his subject matter moves in and out of distinction across the canvas. Fernando’s works are poetry in paint form. For a time Fernando worked from a studio in Hackney. The artist has since relocated to Dorset, where he paints in almost total seclusion. JOSEPH S oseph studied at Liverpool Art School and followed this with post-graduate study at St Martin's School of Art. He has over twelve years experience as a freelance illustrator for a wide variety of clients in advertising, publishing and design. “Inspiration for my recent work comes primarily from Nature and in particular butterflies, moths and the folklore and mythology surrounding these specific insects, to produce work with a narrative quality. I tend to work in series and draw inspiration from classical and popular music, fashion and graphic signs and symbols. I am also inspired by the Victorian obsession of collecting, preserving and presenting insects in boxes. My butterflies are created from collaged paper and each butterfly is individually hand cut. arc was born in Neuilly sur Seine, France, in 1964. Growing up in Paris, he began playing the flute at a young age and went on to train as a concert musician at the Paris Conservatoire. However while music, with its foundation of tone and composition, provided him the means for expression, it would ultimately be in painting that he found his creative voice. Continuing to study and refine his craft, Marc first saw his work exhibited in Boston in 1987. The next year, he moved to New York City, where he began work on a series of figurative, large-format oil paintings on canvas. Born out of this exploration, his style began to evolve into looser and more abstracted narratives that often combined landscape with figuration. He also began to experiment with different materials and techniques. His resulting process of applying paint with trowels and knives onto wood panels marked the beginning of a new direction in the artist’s work. From 1990 until 2010, Marc remained in New York and exhibited extensively in galleries in Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, New York, and Paris, establishing a collector base. Marc currently lives is London where his primary studio is located and divides his time between New York City and the south of France. His works are in the private collections worldwide.

studied painting at Chelsea School of Art in London and graduated in 1977 with a degree in Fine Art. I began my career as a print colourist and then concentrated on animation, working on many commercials, television series and feature films, including the animated sequences in the biographical film about Beatrix Potter, ‘Miss Potter’. In recent years, I have returned to painting, specialising in portrait work and in particular, horses: drawing and painting horses has been a passion of mine since childhood. I have always been intrigued by their beauty and spirit. I prefer to meet the horses before I begin to paint them, (from a photograph either I or the owner has taken) so that I can get to know them and reveal their individual character in the portrait. I paint in a traditional style, in oils, building up layer upon layer, as if I were sculpting them in three dimensions.

CRISPIN Following his studies in BA(Hons) Fine Art, Crispin furthered his creative knowledge by working for several years in the graphic design and print making industries. He returned full time to his first passion of painting in 2015 and continues to produce stunning work from his SW London studio. Crispin’s interest lies in the definition of form and application of colour theory to create intriguing and challenging compositions. His thought process is inspired by everyday visual experiences and the idiosyncratic nature of human observation. All of his work is conceived and drawn on paper before being painted by hand onto canvas or board. Particular attention is then paid to the finer details of edge definition and tonal consistency until the paintings are as flawless as can be achieved. Crispin’s paintings are process heavy, meticulously produced and extremely precise. His methods result in bold, striking images that provoke the viewer to question what they see, bringing visual pleasure and igniting individual reflection. JULIE M After many years of teaching art in secondary schools and with her passion for ceramics Julie embarked on a MA Ceramics at UCA Farnham, which she completed in 2016. Throughout her MA Julie took her inspiration for her artwork from the Jurassic Coastline which is a beautiful, interesting and internationally important place because of it’s fragility. The seas strong and destructive waves are the primary shapers of this coastline and usually occur in the winter when the sea is cold and grey, intermingled with blues. These colours and the fragility of this coast are both reflected within her final outcomes. Her work also explores the senses, especially touch, sight and sound. Julie’s other ceramic work continues to reflect the same themes. JEN Jen is a mixed media artist whose art is influenced by mapping of journeys and layering of memories. She has been both living and working in several countries. She philosophically explains: ‘My work is based on the journey of life, its layers and strata. Through time and pressure, beauty is created - we mine the soul to find precious things. Life refines and polishes our history and the choices we have made. Our layers and compartments are filled with experiences and memories.’ The study of clay has influenced my art in the use of minerals, textures and formations. ate explores the limits of geometric and optical abstraction through the use of colour, repetition, sequence and distortion. Surfaces are created which fold inward and lie on various angles, occupying and enlivening physical space. As the viewer moves around the work, the form, shapes and shadows alter, creating a sense of distortion and surprise. The three-dimensional nature of her paintings aid in obscuring the rules of fixed, consecutive arrangements, generating a sense of unease by creating broken and fragmented shapes whilst in a uniform composition. An endless battle between systems and disorder, structure and chaos echo throughout her practice. Focussing on an aesthetic and optical effect, her work transcends the obsession with 'meaning' in contemporary art. Emphasising the materiality or the 'thingness' of three dimensional structures, she is not only drawing on and combining different disciplines but she is advocating a renewed appreciation of the experience of 'substance' in the experience of art. The whimsical titles such as, 'I Can't Afford The Luxury of Personal Boundaries', and 'My Apology is From The Heart', contrast the striking precision and sensory impact of the work, and play upon the contemporary viewer’s instinct to search for meanings or significances attached to profound objects.

KATHERINE L Katharine graduated with a fine art degree from Bristol in 2003. Since then she has been regularly showing her paintings in London and throughout the UK. She has become established painting contemporary beach scenes based on locations in the West Country and Scotland. More recently she has been focussing on the more structured landscape of woodland and particularly the effect of light through the trees. These painting maintain her distinctive painterly style. Working from sketches and photographs loosely based on definite locations, Katharine endeavours to create a window on an imaginary space. She likes to use gestural marks and loose brushwork to engage the viewer and charge the composition with movement and dynamism, whilst maintaining balance, building up the paint and alternating transparent and opaque layers, dripping, washing, splashing, allowing it to take its own fluid course and give the image a life of its own.

MALAIKA Malaika was born in Nairobi in 1990. As a child, her parents' work for an international financial institution meant that she moved frequently between countries - initially relocating from Kenya to Canada, and later to the United States, India, the Cote d'Ivoire and France. She gained a sense of stability in the midst of this hectic upbringing by developing an interest in art, first piqued by her grandfather, a self-taught painter. Having completed her secondary education in Paris, she moved to London to study Fine Arts at Goldsmiths. The prevailing ‘laissez-faire' philosophy at the art-school, one that encouraged its students to experiment artistically, was embraced by Malaika as a welcome change from the rigid French education system. It was at Goldsmiths that she had a breakthrough moment after peeling off a piece of dried acrylic paint from her shoe. Realising that she had found a novel way of working with paint, she set about deliberately producing dried acrylic to incorporate directly into her art. Currently, acrylic is the only medium that Malaika uses. By peeling, tearing or cutting the paint after it has dried, Malaika is able to create ‘acrylic leaf' that can be layered on to a surface similarly to gold leaf; it is a recurring motif in many of the works on display in this exhibition. Once produced, the acrylic leaf is stuck on to canvas - a technique inspired by the work of Wangechi Mutu, a Brooklynbased Kenyan artist perhaps best known for her large-scale collages. Malaika cites her as being a formative influence, an artist who has expanded her own appreciation of the artistic merits of collage

SARAH From Goldsmith of 16 years to designer of precision laser-cut wall panels; Sarah has transferred and developed her metalworking skills from miniature to large-scale. A Jewellery & Silversmithing graduate of The Cass, she has based her collections on the themes of repetition, geometry and how the tiniest, most insignificant parts can create complex and strong, balanced forms. Plant cells, microbiology and geometry all play a part in the development and design of her work, and her pieces are executed with precision, skill and attention to detail. Her jewellery collections have been exhibited in galleries in the US, Japan and across Europe. She now creates unique, bespoke fine jewellery and is expert in redesigning and remodelling unworn heirlooms. A commission in 2014 from renowned corporate art curator, Tom TempestRadford, saw Sarah's work transformed to an altogether new level, and brought her work into the realm of large-scale decorative architectural metalwork and installations. She utilises the skills of local engineering companies in combination with her own metalworking experiences and craftsmanship to create her new, vibrant collections of decorative panels, room partitions and lighting installations. Sarah has a long history of working closely with clients to create bespoke, considered and perfectly executed works.

JACK T Process is at the core of Jack's practice, creating highly structured and carefully rendered artworks composed from a system of thought. The mathematically informed discoveries are realised and then revealed through an abstract visual dialogue that commonly takes inspiration from the characteristics of the systematic geometry present within nature. Through the use of various materials, Jack creates the optical explorations which combine both the movement of physical form and colour. It was in 2012 after being given a bag of re-purposed screws that Jack realised the potential of using screws as a primary medium for his work. Viewing his practice as a journey, a new generation of ideas are conceived through the act of making and drawing. Jack's previous works, along with numerous working drawings are the story behind the fabrication of future constructions. Using the act of making as a form of discovery illustrates the importance of working manually, rejecting the notion of mechanical procedures. Throughout the production process the manual execution of each bespoke, hand-made piece allows for enough time to gain the key knowledge required to inform future pieces.

MICHELLE M Michelle's art is work of elegant simplicity which, in itself, is the first of many seductions into an engagement with a complex network of tensions. The work is bedded in the clear space between opposites; the movement captured in stillness; the fragility and ephemerality of nature captured in the strength and permanence of industrial, man made materials; inexorable freedom within the clinically defined limitations of space. Whilst utilising symbols found in nature that have a timeless constancy, the methods and media used are innovative applications of contemporary industrial materials subtly handled, so that even the closest scrutiny give almost no intimation of their origins. This play between the timeless and the immediate is at the heart of Michelle's work. However tranquil the order of the instant may seem it cannot segregate itself from the underlying chaos of nature and it is into this engagement with chaos that we are lured, so unassumingly, by the captivating simplicity of order.

CLAIRE B Claire lives and works in London, but started life in the semi-rural county of Lincolnshire. Claire is a multi-disciplinary artist working in paper, metal and painting. DRAGICA Dragica is a painter who lives and works in London. Dragica moved to London from Croatia to pursue a BA in painting from the Chelsea College of Art and Design, followed by a Master's degree. Since the early 2000, Dragica has been regularly exhibiting artwork, initiating and organising art events, workshops, artists' studios and residencies in the UK and abroad. By generating income through various forms of sponsorship Dragica has curated a number of art group shows such as: WIP, Filter, Blink, Mayday-Mayday, Zone of Urgency, Object-Objection-Objective, Tipping Point, Stopover and Navigating Dot. In 2009 she was awarded the Abbey Painting Award, which led to an artist residency and fellowship at the British School in Rome. Alongside her arts practice, Dragica is also leading painting workshops on ‘Connections between Master Paintings and Contemporary Art' at the Wallace Collection, judged the Camden School art competitions and, as visiting artist, lectured on painting practice across the UK universities.

BEATRIZ

Spanish artist currently living in London, Beatriz is inspired by her surroundings and translates the energy and visual information of her dairy life into her work using colour as her personal language. The colour in Beatriz’s work seems a spontaneous emission, as if she had transmitted her emotions directly onto canvas through the mere act of breathing. The viewer, in turn, is drawn into the vortexes of movement in her images, yet they offer points of seductive languor along the way, in the presence of floral shapes opening outward, clouds that provide moments of rest, and other suggestive elements. At the same time, Beatriz’s paintings feature a strong sense of depth, which derives from her knowledge of architecture—the field in which she began her career—and the importance to her of the landscape of her hometown of Santander, Spain. While her work always references landscape or spatial depth, she avoids the presence of a horizon line. Thus departing from classical conceptions of space, she creates dialogues between different spatial planes, allowing viewers to find their own road maps. Her use of colour spots, drips, and splatters convey her fearless and intuitive process while making all of the elements in these imaginary worlds seem to be alive. Evoking Abstract Expressionism, Colour Field Painting, and Spanish painterly traditions, Beatriz’s canvases reference today’s sensory overload experienced with a rare unfiltered and raw openness.

AMANDA Amanda was born in Cornwall in 1957 and has lived there for much of her life. She left to take her degree at Goldsmiths College, London University, but her work is essentially involved with wild places and so she was drawn back to her county. In 1986 she left Cornwall to spend ten years on San Juan Island in the Pacific Northwest of America, working from the dramatic landscapes of islands, mountains and water. Further travels have taken her north to Alaska and south as far as New Zealand. Her work reflects a particular fascination with plants as they grow in their native environment, and rocks shaped by wind and water. Both birds and insects are included in her work as they are an integral part of her wild garden, itself a part of her working process. Throughout her career Amanda Richardson has shown in galleries and worked to commission. Her work varies in scale from pieces suited to domestic interiors to works on a grand scale for public buildings. The first major commission was in 1979 in conjunction with the Royal School of Needlework. This was an embroidered fabric collage 9' x 7' to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Bath family at Longleat House. American clients include Boeing, Universities of Alaska and Washington State, BASF, Waldorf Astoria, Marriott Hotels, Hilton Hotels. Amanda has had one-man exhibitions across America from New York to California as well as maintaining long-standing relationships with galleries in America and Britain.

ROGAN Rogan is an Anglo-Irish artist who currently resides in the south of France. His work explores the boundaries between observational study and artistic interpretation, existing somewhere between scientific accuracy and pure, unbridled imagination. Using both a scalpel and a laser he creates intricate, fragile relief sculpture out of layers of cut paper making multiple visual references: marine algae, cell structures, microbes, pathogens, neurons, coral, fossils, fungi. Each work starts as a detailed drawing and then grows organically layer after layer, playing with the dynamic of repetition and variation until a kind of critical mass is achieved and the work asserts its own uniqueness and autonomy. The process of production is slow and painstaking with some pieces taking up to five months to complete. The ultimate aim is to create works that invite quiet contemplation of the vastness, complexity and beauty of the natural world that surrounds us.

I

am interested in the way a model or plan can simplify our perception, and can evoke in us a sense of potential and possibility. One less focused upon the end result and more concerned with reinvention and growth. Currently I am working with both porcelain and paper, producing an ongoing series of small scale sculptures, and a series of embossed collagraph prints. These works explore spacial composition; the interplay of form and space, and their interaction with the environment through light. I choose simple materials, used in their raw state, that have the sensitivity to record process and change. I employ direct methods of making, and derive forms from basic geometrics of circles and squares. This provides order, and an austerity with which to establish opposing relationships, with the aim of finding a unity within the whole. My works in sculpture are constructed from planes of white porcelain clay. These remain separate and are slotted together after firing to construct a three dimensional form. Simplicity is balanced by the complex spaces created through the influence of the intersecting planes upon one another.

JOHN F German artist John's conceptual work is an attempt to discern governing principles of the universe - art as a way of enquiring about the world. Artistic investigation, as a way of inquiring about the world, keeps asking the same perennial questions about origin of matter as science and religion. It bridges scientific and spiritual dimensions by conveying a message which is both: universal and deeply personal. His art transcends the dualism of objective and subjective, matter and spirit. It goes beyond the established framework of human knowledge and beliefs towards the state of ubiquitous oneness. He believes that every form of existence, from a thought, a feeling, matter to space and time is one and the same energy governed by the same principle and being a part of the Singular Universe. Dualism exists only as our perception and it is through their singularity that we can access the truth.

VAUGHN Vaughn creates his three dimensional art with materials such as plywood and acrylic. “Patterns interest me: they are the background, the fabric and the landscape in which we live. Patterns are made by the weave of thread in cloth, the repeated laying of bricks in a wall, the individual decisions of a billion consumers or the single pixel of a digital screen. They record a process of thinking and making inside every product created by men. Patterns are blueprints, used to move data across space and time. Complex patterns inside nature remember a million years of Darwinian history. Patterns of human settlement, grids of streets and pavements remember the interests and politics of people now long gone. The pattern of a fingerprint records identity, controls our access to space and allows movement across national boundaries. Form, identity and icon are spectacles which can be constructed. In a world of spectacle, pattern is silent and barely noticeable. It is often invisible, often unintentional. It is manifested in elegance, logic, beauty, brutality, music, weather, language, planning, coincidence and accident. Patterns are dynamic, stable and restrictive in every measure. I work with patterns because they construct and constrain reality, for better and for worse. Although they are quiet (because they are quiet) they are very powerful. Made visible by art, they can be exposed, interrogated and challenged.�

ANNE From the moment we are born we love movement - be it clouds drifting across the sky or leaves gently swaying with the summer breeze. Kinetic Mobiles bring movement, creating a piece of art that with a hint of a breeze changes form. Although most kinetic mobiles are made from metals and plastic, I prefer the versatility that polymer clay allows me, the possibilities are endless: colours, translucents, shimmers, inks the list goes on. Once baked polymer clay is hardy and long lasting. Each piece is sanded with several different grits, waxed and buffed. Kinetic mobiles are art in motion and a definite must for any home. Creating mobiles that balance perfectly, is an art in patience and focus, completely rewarding when the end result is achieved.

BELGIN Belgin was born and brought up in Istanbul, Turkey and has been living in London for almost three decades. She exhibited in Istanbul, London, Bergen and on the QE2 liner. n all my work I am interested in following a very simple system which is devised prior to execution and cannot be deviated from during the course of production. There is an abandonment of colour, of gesture, of the expressive, and instead I instate an almost mechanistic methodology that minimises the decision making process and emphasises a systemic approach. In this respect the work can be seen more as a result, bounded by a set of rules as opposed to something derived from an intuitive, responsive operation. There is a meditative aspect to the work, the repetition of a singular form or action synonymous with some mantra, yet this repetition equally feeds into a minimalist convention, where industrial conformity and a stark mathematical edge underpin each piece. Although aesthetically, the work appears almost machined, they are very much hand made objects, obsessively laboured and crafted. I am attempting with each piece to follow through the process as accurately as possible, however, there are invariably "mistakes" present. This presence of the human acts to undercut the implicit abandonment of any expressive or gestural mark making. One is thrown into relief by the other. The work occupies a space between this pure, reductive detachment of authorship, and an acknowledgement of the hand made. 287

eramic Artist Regina is a London based ceramic art practice specialising in 3D architectural ceramics. Inspired by water and poised between art and design, the undulating sculptural tiles create unique feature-walls and statement pieces for public and domestic settings alike, introducing an elegant and sophisticated element into architectural spaces. Regina is known internationally for her tactile ceramic sculptures with highly distinctive abstract designs. Her work is held in public and private collections around the world, including the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and the Museum of Contemporary Ceramics in Gifu, Japan. Regina has worked with leading interior architects and art consultants to create site-specific installations that complement their setting while retaining their own artistic identity. Her portfolio includes an exclusive 3D tile line, designed in 2011, for the American company Ann Sacks, and the cabin art work design for P&O’s newest cruise ship Britannia. Regina studied Fine Art and Ceramics in Vienna, Geneva and London and has worked from her ceramics studio in South London since 1998. Regina received funding from the Crafts Council to set up her workshop. She is a Crafts Council Selected Member, an elected Fellow of the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain, and a member of the International Academy of Ceramics. 291

ARTHUR

rthur was born in New Jersey and studied at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in Manhattan, New York City - widely considered to be one of the leading art schools in the United States. His artistic heroes are the sculptor Rodin and photographer Edward Weston. Arthur is inspired by natural beauty - pure and unadorned as nature intended and this informs his beautiful studies. His journey quite simply is 'through the heart'.
