Large-scale Makerspace THE LANDFORM
site
term advised by teammates
Knoxville, Tennessee Fall 2023
James Rose
Abigail Thompson + Seth Babb
Situated at the crossroads of Knoxville’s historic Old City, Art District and bustling Downtown, the project proposes a new maker-hub, landmark and urban park for the city. The Landform is a roughly 25,000 sq ft (2320 sq m) fabrication space intended to provide the downtown area with a facility featuring greater capacity for manufacturing, prototyping and interdisciplinary collaboration.
In addition to the creation of a new makerspace, the Landform tackles issues of sustainability and accessibility head-on by establishing the roof as public green space, and reimagining the circulation of the site to include an American Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant pedestrian ramp. The building features: an occupiable intensive green roof, an extensive green roof above the gallery, a green facade system, and a photovoltaic (PV) pavilion at the southern end.
Large-scale Makerspace
Accessible Public Circulation
The project engages universal design as a primary tactic to influence the form and function of the building’s front facing facade. The incorporation of the 1:12 sloped, ADA compliant ramp provides a connection from the top of the viaduct to the lower street level, enabling the public to engage with the activities of the makerspace whilst creating a new urban attraction.
Green Landform Transformation
The site, which is currently an asphalt lot, is given new life as a reimagined plot of green space, and through a series of transformations aims to achieve various environmental and social benefits. Through the addition of green roofs, green facades, and plantings, the building significantly reduces and redirects the urban runoff of the site.

Pixelization
The third design tactic is a system of pixelization which is employed on each facade, the photovoltaic pavilion, and in the paver system of the ramp and green roof. The northwest and southeast facades are composed of three different types of pixels of varying opacity in order to dictate the quality of light inside the fabrication space and the views into the spaces from the ramp. Similarly, the photovoltaic pixel pattern on the southwest facade includes omissions of pixels which provides opportunities for views.
Autumn Farmer’s Market
Along with providing fabrication space for Knoxville’s maker-community, The Landform takes on the unique challenge of providing the city with a newfound public park and community events space. This particular axonometric diagram illustrates the green roof’s transformation into a Saturday morning farmer’s market which encourages greater community interaction and opportunities for local vendors to share their products.
Downtown Restaurant THE HOMAGE
site term advised by
South Pittsburg, Tennessee Fall 2022
DavidFox
Situated in an immensely historically and culturally rich site, the proposed restaurant seeks to pay homage to the past and celebrate the future to come. The project is located on a block of land which used to feature a collection of African Americanowned businesses and a masonic lodge that were central aspects of the community. None of these buildings except for the deserted masonic lodge remain.
The project grapples with how to respond to this erasure of history as it becomes increasingly at risk of being forgotten altogether. The restaurant seeks to revitalize the town of South Pittsburg by creating an open and inviting connection to the street and downtown, and by introducing accessible green spaces for the public to enjoy via the green roof and the redesigned alleyway.

RIVERLINE COMMUNITY
Refugee Housing
site term advised by
Knoxville, Tennessee Spring 2023
Maged Guerguis
In response to the ongoing Russian invasion and resulting displacement of Ukrainians, the Riverline Community is a neighborhood of prefabricated and modular structures specifically intended for Ukrainian refugees who have relocated to Knoxville, TN. The community master plan includes a four level, undulating spine of one- and two-unit modules, a townhouse village, and community spaces such as a recreation center, grocery store and restaurant.
The project’s variety of programmatic spaces, coupled with its emphasis on engaging the landscape through the integration of courtyard spaces, introduced walking and cycling paths, access to the riverline and selection for native vegetation is intended to provide those seeking asylum a community-centric approach for integrating and adjusting to life in Knoxville.

BLENDING BOUNDARIES
Architectural Studio
site term advised by
Knoxville, Tennessee Spring 2022
Brian AmbroziakBlending Boundaries is a proposed studio space for 15 architecture students of the University of Tennessee that serves as an intimate sanctuary and meditative environment devoted to the acts of designing, studying, and collaborating. The proposal consists of programs for the acts of dreaming and creating which provoke a hyper-sensitivity to the subtle transformations occurring within the time and space of the site along the Tennessee River.
The studio explores the embodied potential of the space to simultaneously reflect the bustling energy of its context, and project the studio’s artistic conscious onto the landscape, thus informing the various activities and rituals which take place throughout the site. The design aims to respond to and enhance the perception of the elements of wind, sun, and rain, and invites a fluid relationship among the occupant, the interior condition and external surroundings.
Synchro Trope Index
Tasked with identifying a series of personified characteristics of the site, the studio embarked on frequent site visits which led to the careful investgation and development of each student’s unique set of tropes. These tropes determined our ‘manifesto of synchronization’ and eventually informed the architecture itself.

Territory Study SITE LINES
site term advised by
Kyiv, Ukraine
Fall 2021
Mark Stanley
Site Lines investigates a specifically defined territory through various levels of increasing scale and focus. I elected to study Kyiv because of my considerable familiarity and fondness for the city having grown up visiting it every summer.
The specific “territory” chosen is the culturally and politically significant city center of Maidan Square. Through a sequence of increasingly scaled images: the line map, drone view, and embodied perspective, the project highlights important nodes and attributes of the city whilst employing a colorful and abstract rendering strategy.
Drone View
This view offers a privileged, oblique perspective from a drone’s vantage overlooking the Maidan Square and surrounding buildings.
Embodied Perspective
Zooming in further yields the on-the-ground, embodied view of Maidan Square from one of its fountains.
Open Air Cinema ENABLING THE SUBJECTIVE
site term

Knoxville, Tennessee
Fall 2021
Curry Hackett
Founded upon themes of dynamism and community, this pavilion attempts to re-imagine the cinema as an open and circulatory space which facilitates interaction among community members. Its outdoor nature and positioning on the water feature of the park grants visitors a more intimate connection to the site of the World’s Fair Park in Knoxville, TN.
Consisting of a sequence of three cinema screens, the space invites people to determine their own course of circulation and exploration as one navigates through the curving pathways. The pavilion revolves around an inhabitable central structure which enables projections onto its exterior and interior for both external and immersive viewings of the film.
