ARCHITECTURAL STUDIO
The project is a studio space for 15 architecture students of the University of Tennessee that serves as an intimate sanctuary and meditative environment devoted to the acts of designing, studying, and collaborating. The proposal consists of programs for the acts of dreaming and creating which provoke a hyper-sensitivity to the subtle transformations occurring within the time and space of the site.
The design responds to and enhances the perception of the elements of wind, sun, and rain, and invites a fluid relationship among the occupant, the interior condition, and the external surroundings.
The studio explores the embodied potential of the space to simultaneously reflect the bustling energy of its context, and project the studio’s artistic conscious onto the landscape, informing the various activities and rituals which take place along the site.

BLENDING BOUNDARIES
POV STUDENT as she saunters to the balcony’s edge, she becomes immersed in the expansive scene before her— mesmerized by both the river’s obscurity and limitlessness—dusted with hints of the approaching brilliance.
Despite her familiarity with this rite, she is taken aback as if an unsuspecting witness for the first time, and finds herself yearning to greet each new dawn as the rebirth.
INT. STUDIO. EXPANSIVE ENCLOSURE. AUTUMN. RISING DAWN.
CLOSE UP of the student as she seeks pause after a night’s length of conceptual exertion. She nudges the delicate glass drapery with eyes half closed, leaning her weight against the sliding planes until she has reached the end of the bay and hears the subtle click of the crystal doors fit into place.
WIDE SHOT as she emerges from the thin shell, and recovers her breath in unison with the pacifying breeze. Filling her lungs with the crisp air, she becomes acutely aware of the fresh scents which evoke sweet memories of her own childhood countryside; alike in darkness and tranquility.

EXT. SHALLOWS. GLOWING LANTERN. SPRING. FADING SUNSET.
PAN as the sun bids its final farewell to this moment in time, projecting its saturated radiance as a final show before it dips behind the horizontal band and leaves only a fleeting trace of its existence.
The luminance of the studio lantern begins to project itself onto the river’s rippling surface, appearing as gracefully as the materialization of green-yellow fireflies against a star-lit sky.
ZOOM IN to the student delighting in the cool which splashes against her feet. With each stride, she becomes aware of the performance of ripples her movements produce, and observes the countless footprints which are temporarily preserved on the sandy grains that the river’s lapses do not reach.
CLOSE UP as her eyes playfully dance between the river to her left, and the looming lantern of activity before her.

She soon becomes totally engrossed in the happenings of the latter, and excites at the sheer thought of passing through the underbelly by way of the dwindling sun rays.

EXT. RIVER. DRIFTING PLYWOOD. WINTER. ENCROACHING STORM.
PULL BACK from worn sketchbook to view the nestled position of a young artist within the undulations of a wooden boat. After several hours of remaining folded and intentionally scribbling, she eases back finally and allows her body to slowly fill the pleats. Resting her drawings by her side and staring out at the waves which both fill the void before her and vibrate gently beneath her feet, she closes her eyes.
REVEAL passage of time and PULL BACK further to establish the thickness of the atmosphere which now engulfs the landscape and shrouds the line between water and sky; the temperature plummets at a strikingly perceivable rate.
PAN UP to capture the moment she gains consciousness to the sound and touch of falling rain, which is so genuinely amplified on the water’s surface that she is brought to tears. Each teardrop which rolls down her soft cheek is equaled in lightness by the gentle drizzling around her. Tranquility overcomes her, slowly giving way to a sensation of unease as she perceives a slow rumble emitted from high above, prompting her to begin the glide back to the shore’s edge.

DOWNTOWN RESTAURANT
Situated in an immensely historically and culturally rich site, the proposed restaurant seeks to pay homage to the past and celebrate the future to come. The proposed site is located on a block of land which used to feature a collection of African Americanowned businesses and a masonic lodge that were central aspects of the community. None of these buildings except for a deserted masonic lodge
remain. The project grapples with how to respond to this erasure of history as it becomes increasingly at risk of being forgotten altogether. The restaurant seeks to revitalize the town of South Pittsburg by creating an open and inviting connection to the street and downtown, and by introducing public green spaces for the public to enjoy through the green roof and the redesigned alleyway.

The project investigates a personallydefined territory through various levels of increasing scale and focus. I selected to study Kyiv as a city I am very familiar with from having visited many times and having close family ties to. I chose to explore the city
center of Maidan Square through a sequence of four increasingly scaled images: the line map, city plan, drone view, and embodied perspective. The project also explores abstract rendering techniques and the use of color to add character and emotion.

PARAMETRIC RELATIONS
This project began with the logic of the Punnett Square to inform genetic variations of form, quality, and color through manipulations in Grasshopper and V-Ray. The task was to create a set of rendered objects that are family, yet distinctly different from one
another based on the variable traits in my set: glowing-glitchy, yellow-glitchy, glowing-porous, and yellow-porous. The final piece was a rendered mashup of one of the object superimposed onto the Kinkaku-ji Temple in Kyoto, Japan.
ENABLING THE SUBJECTIVE

OPEN AIR CINEMA
Founded upon themes of dynamism and community, this pavilion attempts to re-imagine the cinema as an open and circulatory space which facilitates interaction among community members. Its open air aspect and unique positioning on the water feature of the park, grants visitors a more intimate connection to the site of the World’s Fair Park in Knoxville, TN.
Consisting of a sequence of three cinema screens, the space invites people to determine their own course of circulation and exploration as one navigates through the curving pathways. The pavilion revolves around an inhabitable central structure which enables projections onto its exterior and interior for both external and immersive viewings of the film.
