SettiMovimento Torinese
The Kengo Kuma International Workshop was a 4 day workshop in which focused on designing the new urban axis, the so-called Broadway in Settimo Torinese. It challenged the uses of the public spaces, and their connections to the public and private functions. Students from Tokyo University - the Kengo Kuma Laboratory and Polytechnic University of Turin worked together on the urban design issues and the architectural design of public facilities to support the urban use of the “Broadway and the private facilities around it. The town of Settimo Torinese, defined by its name being seven roman kilometers from Turin, is moving. It does not stay still. With the new town plan and the future development of Settimo, the expanding integration on new segments of development, that finally will connect to the city of Turin. For the first time Settimo is not walking towards Torino, but it is guiding it. The wide boardwalk with the integrated businesses, residential area and public service functions foresees a dynamic new way of moving. Movement is everything, and as a concept to our design project we intent to apply it through the ongoing changes along the boardwalk, analyzing it by the functions that are to be placed, in a way that the possibility to move, stop, look are experienced at every corner. Movement means also development and from the starting point we had the understanding that although the big scale businesses that are to be inserted in the area, there is a need to create small scale initiatives that symbolize the rhythm of Settimo so strongly. Our aim was to create the possibility to understand space and experience movement perceived through the changing of position, surroundings, environment and height. Working in a playfulness of different levels and creating a division between the passive and active activities, integrated with the existing functions creates an endless new perspective of a strong and intelligently developing design to this specific area.
