MASTER THESIS AM

useum for light arstists

OVERVIEW Brief Introduction The beginning: It began from the interest I have with the relationship between light and architecture. From observing architecture interact with light in diverse ways, but more Importantly considering it as an untouchable element that reveals the world to us. I wanted to look for something unique that combines both the beauty of light and the interaction of it with space. That is how I began researching art light and artists that make light the primary element in their work. Once I understood this type of art I was immersed rapidly in the beauty and conception of this type of art.

THESIS QUESTION

How can architecture heighten the viewer’s perception of a Permanent collection of light art installations gathered in a Museum for artists of the light and space movement? In order to resolve this issue I started to map my thesis question and break it down into main points that would strategically lead me to a coherent answer. As a result of this observation and collection of data, 5 artists were chosen along with 12 pieces of work.

ARTIST AND WORK SELECTION

5 artists were selected, artists that are considered in what is called the light and space movement from the 60s, along with the inclusion of two that reinforced the exhibition theme due to their strong presence in the exploration of light and space. I grouped their work and divided it into main categories from where representative pieces were extracted.

THE ARRIVAL SENSE The Arrival to the museum is a very important issue for any building but, because this is a museum for light artists the main concern needs to be focused in addressing and elevating the overall experience of the visitors and to create optimal preparatory conditions for viewing the light installations. The museum Collection (sequence of the work): The Sequence of how I wanted the user to experience the circuit of the art displays was determined with to two main principles in mind. One, the definition of what I want to accomplish or communicate in the circuit from one piece to another and as a general exhibition. The second principle was the composition and structure of the work of art itself. Figuring the logical grouping of the works and the effect they can produce on their proximate surroundings was considered as well as the architecture as a response to a specific situation.

ROLE AND CIRCULATION Along with the sequence of work, to obtain a complete experience it was necessary to produce effective connection the spaces. Due to the configuration of the architecture the circulation must follow a logical way to access the spaces. The Approach: This simply summarizes the environment created for the circulation space preview to enter the main space. It can vary depending of the need between the rooms, but allows the awareness of the sensation that I wanted to create for the user along with the time motion between one room and another Configuration of the Path: It’s becoming a result of a linear and networking fashion path.

DEPARTURE SENSE My idea of the departure is a confrontation between the interior with all of the work of art and a moment of pause that allows the opportunity to open up the space and observe the nature that surrounds. Contradictory moments in time from enclosure to open space, a contrasting emergence from artifact to nature. It is this approach that will give equilibrium to what the user is experimenting. It is necessary that the user be given the opportunity to confront moments where the intention of the building and its relationship with the work of art is well defined. An interesting approach can be the realization of an ending path that places the user in an observation of the surroundings and the building itself.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Taking advantage of unusable space is a challenge that can be reflected with particular solutions for architectural purposes. During my researching and mapping of Portland through studio exercises, my main theme residual spaces, grabbed my attention and lead me to choose this location. In my location an existing storage building emerges between an important highway and a bridge that makes a virtual boundary.

DESIGN CENTER FOR ELECTRIC CARS// BRIEF INTRODUCTION

The studio project that we developed along two quarters to simulate what would be construction documents. One of the main goals of the project being the visibility of the building my idea was based in leaving the structure exposed in some areas like a carving of the building to discover what is inside. The interaction and use of the building as a tool to educate about electric cars was one of the main priorities.

DCED This project being part of a comprehensive studio helped us to understand its different components and disciplines involved as part of the development of the project where all is integrated and coordinated.

ONE LENS MEDIA/WEBSITE CONCEPT One lens media, a filmmaker company, had the idea to produce a website with the theme of a futuristic building that would reveal its interior spaces which would metaphorically represent each of its departments while the user navigates through its contents. Although this wasn’t an architectural project, it was challenging in terms of the design approach and the overall concept itself. The graphics had to reach a high level of representation and the images had to convey in a clear way the proposed idea and the characteristics of the brand/firm. The project wasn’t completed for unforeseen reasons, but here I show one of the renderings that was to be part of the project.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION An addition remodel of a single-family house, this project was developed on the concept of a modern house on Lombard Street. With this project I was totally immersed from the schematic design to the construction documents and it allowed me to gain experience with issues regarding building permits.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION This project was challenging due to the combination of the client requirements and site conditions, in the end we worked out a design the suited all our expectations. This project contains on one side a small apartment attached to the main house and between an atrium/hall that integrates both.

aranwa hotels cusco//Zaguan BRIEF INTRODUCTION Our firm was in charge of designing the interior spaces for this project. We remodeled an old colonial mansion with the goal of keeping the original thematic and characteristics of the house from that time, while at the same time bringing elements that will give a feeling of modernism to the facilities. The client was a collector of original pieces from the colonial time and wanted to include those as part of the room’s ornamentations. We had to model, in many cases, each piece to include on our 3d images to get a real sense of how the spaces would look.

HOTEL ARANWA IN CUZCO The Hotel Aranwa in the city of Cuzco, Peru is a 5 star hotel built on a restored 16th century manor. The restoration had to be done with much care in order to preserve the integrity of the house and also the fact that it was protected by the National Institute of Culture.
