IVECO SUCCESSFUL AT THE DAKAR TRIAL

SECOND PLACE FOR GERARD DE ROOY, WHO HAD LED THE RALLY FOR A LONG TIME, AND 3 TRUCKS IN THE FIRST 10 PLACES AFTER 10 THOUSAND KILOMETRES OF A GRUELLING RACE. THIS IS THE RESULT AT THE WORLD’S HARDEST RACE. DAY BY DAY NEWS FROM THE WORLD’S MARATHON RALLY The legitimate disappointment of Gerard De Rooy who, after being in the lead for most of the race, because of a puncture arrived 2nd at the Dakar finishing line, in no way detracts from the extraordinary performance of the Iveco trucks. Four started and four finished in an exceptionally challenging rally, where many vehicles had to pull out, so that each stage had fewer vehicles continuing. In the end and only at the end, did Karginov’s Kamaz, a vehicle designed and built specifically for this type of competition, succeed in taking first place

by just 3’ and 11”. Very different, then, from the Trakker: trucks that – apart from a robust injection of power and some small modifications so it could participate in the race – are no different from those you can find at your dealership. Jumping to the top of the general classification with the victory in the second day of the rally, Gerard De Rooy, the Dutch driver leading the Petronas De Rooy Iveco team, kept his lead for almost all of the extremely long and extremely tough race, warding off the

dangerous assaults of the drivers of the Russian Kamaz team. With just two stages to go until the finish, thanks to a puncture, the Russian team took the lead. The other members of the team also had an excellent rally: Hans Stacey, seventh at the finish, while Pep Vila Roca and Joseph “Jo” Adua finished respectively 10th and 22nd. All the Iveco trucks, therefore, reached the finishing line in what proved to be one of the most gruelling Dakar Rallys ever. And with a big lead over the vehicles of

3

Iveco’s competitors on the market. An excellent result in itself, which testifies to the sturdiness of the Trakker. Designed for working in the most difficult conditions, in quarries and work sites at any latitude, the strong points of this model are the solidity of its chassis, the power and reliability of the Cursor engines, the comfort of

the cab, designed to provide the best possible work environment for those who have to drive on the hardest ground for hours and hours. And then, the versatility of the range. In addition to the 4x4 version, in fact, the Trakker also comes in 4x2, 6x4, 6x6, 8x6 and 8x8 versions. Hurtling at full speed through the

desert for two weeks at a stretch was the hardest test. A test that it passed with flying colours, in front of a public of millions of people throughout the world.

THE DAKAR RALLY by Giancarlo Riolfo

THE ROUTE

Routes that are partly different for motorcycles,

cars and trucks. For the latter the route was 9,188 kilometres, of which 5,212 were special trials. The rally started in Rosario, in Argentina, on January 5 and finishes in ValparaĂso, in Chile, on January 18. Thirteen days of competition, broken by one rest day.

THE RACE by Giancarlo Riolfo

THE HARDEST DAKAR

THIRTEEN DAYS OF COMPETITION, BROKEN BY ONE REST DAY

Ten thousand kilometres, from Rosario to Valparaíso, through Argentina, Bolivia and Chile, on desert tracks and dunes. This year’s Dakar Rally was especially challenging. So much so that the organisers have dubbed it “The Odyssey”. An extremely tough competition, in the purest spirit of the tradition. The legendary Dakar Rally began in 1979. That year the French driver Thierry Sabine managed to organise a crazy race from Paris to Dakar, the capital of Senegal. Ten thousand kilometres across the Sahara, an extreme competition because of its difficulties and dangers, which attracted 170 enthusiasts from all over the world with cars, off-roads and motorcycles (the next year also trucks would take part).

The winners in that first edition were Cyril Neveu, riding a Yamaha XT, and for fourwheels the pair Alain Génestrier-Joseph Terbiaut with a Range Rover. The African race was an immediate hit. Just like the 1000 Miglia. Over the years the route has changed many times, unfortunately also due to conflicts and civil unrest in various countries. This also led to the cancellation of the 2008 race and to the decision to run the Dakar Rally in South America from 2009. In politically more peaceful countries, but always on challenging off-road tracks through evocative desert landscapes. Just like the Sahara, then.

IVECO AND DAKAR

6

In 1980, the year after the founding of the Paris-Dakar, the most demanding competition in the world opened up also to trucks, and in 1982 Iveco decided to enter. That began a long adventure crowned by successes and unforgettable moments. In the early 1980s Iveco participated in the adventure racing, especially – naturally – the Paris-Dakar, where it achieved good results in two editions. Then, after a lengthy pause, in 2002 Iveco returned to the Dakar Rally with a private driver behind the wheel of a Eurocargo 4x4 and, the year after, with a Eurotrakker 4x4. In 2005, Markku Alen and Miki Biasion took to the African tracks two Eurocargo 4x4 and in 2007 the Trakker came in 12th. Still in 2007, the Italian Luisa Trucco came in 24th in the Lisbon-Dakar with a racing Eurocargo supported by one vehicle for assistance, while in 2009 (the 2008 was cancelled because of the risk of terrorism) she decided to take on the “ArgentinaChile” Dakar with a Eurocargo reaching 17th place in the truck category and 3rd place in the under 10 litres category. Iveco was once again in the running in 2011, and the following year triumphed with Gerard De Rooy. The 2012 event was an extraordinary rally, with 1st, 2nd and 6th places in the general Trucks classification. After the 2013 edition that was marked by some bad luck, where Iveco reconfirmed the excellence and reliability of its vehicles, the Team Petronas De Rooy Iveco asserted itself in the 2014 edition, in what everyone thought was the most challenging Dakar Rally ever organised, winning second place just 3’11” behind the winner and placing three vehicles in the first ten places (De Rooy second, Stacey seventh and Vila Roca tenth), and Adua twenty-second.

THE TEAM by Nicola Grande

THE IVECO TEAM SPIRIT Commitment, tenacity, dedication, concentration and driving skills. These are just some of the qualities of the team spirit that enlivens all those who work for Iveco. To finish a demanding race like the Dakar, not only do you need to be physically prepared, but also psychologically, and above all, you need to be able to work as part of a team. This means being certain you can count on a reliable and close-knit team composed not only of drivers, but also of all those who every day follow the four competition vehicles “at a distance” providing assistance and support. Iveco and the De Rooy team right from the outset found they shared the same values that tied them together, which created a strong and successful bond, and not only on the tracks of the Dakar Rally.

LIVE REPORTS by Giancarlo Riolfo and Nicola Grande

2014

ODYSSEY THE

From January 5th to 18th 2014

THE NEWS 5 JANUARY, FROM ROSARIO TO SAN LUIS First day of the race A short special trial stage of the 2014 Dakar Rally. Only 180 kilometres, all in Argentina, from Rosario to San Luis, which saw Gerard De Rooy with his Iveco Powerstar positioned in fourth place in the general classification for trucks and just one minute and 33 seconds behind the Kamaz of Ayrat Mardeev, the winner on the day. Having left Santa Fe, the Dakar competitors travelled a fair distance on roads to reach the province of Córdoba, where the trial started. The trucks started after the motorcycles, quads and cars. At the finishing line, the Powerstar of Gerard De Rooy and the Trakker of Hans Stacey arrived just behind the winner Mardeev (Kamaz) and the second-placed Ales Loprais (Tatra). Also the other two drivers of the Dutch team – the Spaniard Pep Vila and the Frenchman Jo Adua, both in an Iveco Trakker – ranked among the top ten in the general truck classification.

6 JANUARY, FROM SAN LUIS TO SAN RAFAEL

De Rooy in the lead Double success for Gerard De Rooy, first in the demanding 400 kilometre trial, with uphill and downhill sections, sand dunes, and in the lead, at the end of the day, of the general classification. “We performed very strong today”, he said. “We forced nothing and drove continuously behind Mardeev who had started six minutes ahead of us. At kilometre 313 it all went wrong for him. In a narrow canyon Mardeev rolled on his roof and because we were right behind him we were the first truck at the scene and of course it was our sportive duty to help him. After helping the Kamaz back on his feet, the finish line was so close we just couldn't pass him. That caused a delay of 23 minutes for us, which was later reaccredited by the organisation.” Rounding off the success for the team Petronas De Rooy, was the excellent performance of Hans Stacey, who won fourth place in the classification.

ODYSSEY THE

7 JANUARY, FROM SAN RAFAEL TO SAN JUAN

A cautious race, winning conduct A demanding stage, which severely tested men and vehicles with a particularly bumpy ground and a long series of punctures, to which the Trakker of Hans Stacey was no exception. Gerard De Rooy preferred to adopt a cautious pace, seeking to maintain a steady rate and avoid damaging the tyres. He was rewarded with second place behind Andrey Karginov (Kamaz), and this allowed him to consolidate the leading position in the general classification. Excellent performances from Vila (fifth at the finishing line) and Adua (ninth), while Stacey, delayed by a puncture, finished in 11th place.

8 JANUARY, FROM SAN JUAN TO CHILECITO

De Rooy wins again An exciting duel between Karginov (Kamaz) and the leader of the classification De Rooy. The Russian stood his ground against the Dutch Iveco driver until a puncture stopped him for about twelve minutes. “It was a terrific Special – said De Rooy – one of the best seen over the last two or three years. We saw from the beginning that Karginov was too fast and we couldn’t keep up with him, so we decided to drive at our own pace, without taking any risks, especially with the tires. Nevertheless, we were in the link section when we noticed a tire was slowly deflating and we had to stop to change it. In the second part we overtook Karginov, who had stopped on the left side of the course with a flat tire. We made a small navigation mistake towards the end, but nothing too serious.”

9 JANUARY, FROM CHILECITO TO TUCUMÁN

Sand and bad luck do not hold back the leader An exhausting stage, dominated by the dunes that sorely tested both men and vehicles. And which did not spare the race leader, Gerard De Rooy. The truck, stuck in sand, broke a rear semi-axle and the Dutch driver had to continue the stage with just three drive wheels. A big handicap on soft terrain. Moreover, sand in the radiator caused the engine to overheat and at a certain point De Rooy had to stop to let it cool down. And if that was not enough, he had another puncture. At the end of the stage, De Rooy was in third place. A place on the podium that was worth first place, and which allowed him to keep his position at the top of the Dakar general classification.

10 JANUARY, FROM TUCUMÁN TO SALTA

10

De Rooy consolidates his advantage A shorter special stage (156 kilometres) for the trucks with respect to the other competitors, in a day marked by the tragic news in the previous stage of the death of the Belgian motorcyclist Eric Palante. A victim, probably, of dehydration and the heat. In this stage, which was won by the Dutchman Peter Versluis (Man), De Rooy arrived seventh, but he could consolidate his leadership position in the general classification for trucks. This was an important result in a rally that still had a long way to go, and in which the unforeseen is just around the corner.

11 JANUARY, REST DAY Finally some rest! After a gruelling week of driving, the rest day was in Salta. This was also an opportunity to weigh up the competition and plan the strategy for the second half of the Dakar Rally. Testifying to the difficulty of the route were the number of vehicles still in the race. Of the 174 motorcycles that started, only 83 remained. Just 17 quads were left out of 48, while 70 cars out of 147 finished the first week. Less than half. The trucks were more sturdy and more reliable: of the 70 that started, 52 were still in the race. “We did not push too much in this first phase of the race”, explained Gerard De Rooy. “We always drove very cautiously, trying to avoid punctures during the special trials”. Being at the top of the classification, the Dutchman promised to continue to drive carefully. “We do not feel we need to press down hard on the accelerator, so we will look at how to proceed by assessing the moves our adversaries. Nevertheless, we will have to fight, especially with the Kamaz drivers. They are always in the top positions and they can adopt a team strategy. I know it is still going to be difficult”.

12 JANUARY, FROM SALTA TO SALTA

Kamaz double After a rest day, the rally started again, with an itinerary that varied according to the vehicle. For the trucks the route was a ring of 525 kilometres which saw Kamaz taking the first two places. The stage winner was Eduard Nikolaev, followed 3 minutes and 45 seconds later by Dmitry Sotnikov. Third was Gerard De Rooy, who kept his leadership of the rally with almost 38 minutes over the next driver, Karginov (Kamaz). Third in the general classification was Nikolaev.

13 JANUARY, FROM SALTA TO UYUNI CALAMA Assault on De Rooy At full speed through Chile for a hard-fought stage. With an average speed of over 100 kilometres an hour, and with top speeds of about 150, Gerard De Rooy managed to hold onto his position despite the attacks from the Kamaz drivers who succeeded in making up five minutes. Sotnikov and Karginov, in fact, literally closed down De Rooy by deliberately slowing down the pace to make some gains in the rankings and limiting the Dutch driver’s room to manoeuvre on a stretch where overtaking was practically impossible. At the end of the stage, De Rooy was five minutes behind Karginov, but still kept

11

his leadership position with a lead of 32 minutes and 35 seconds over the winner of the stage. The other drivers in the team gave excellent performances with Hans Stacey in ninth place and the two Trakker of Adua and Vila respectively in eleventh and thirteenth place.

14 JANUARY, FROM CALAMA TO IQUIQUE

Defending the lead With the ninth stage an extremely difficult series of trials begins with long stretches on sand. Of these, Calama to Iquique was surely one of the most anticipated because of the extremely high dunes and a difference in altitude of over 1,000 metres, with an average gradient of 30%. These were conditions that penalised De Rooy who, although arriving second, lost 19 minutes to his direct adversary Andrey Karginov in the Kamaz. “Karginov’s trial today was incredible, – said De Rooy – but he also had a lot of luck. This stage in general was very complicated, for roughly the first 360 kilometres we found only holes and rocks. Then finally we arrived at the stretch with the dunes, but we were already too far behind.” In the general rankings, the Iveco Powerstar of De Rooy is still number one, but his lead has dropped to 13 minutes over his main rival Karginov.

15 JANUARY, FROM IQUIQUE TO ANTOFAGASTA

Sand and dunes A stage won by the Czech driver Loprais in a Tatra who led from the start to cross the finishing line in Antofagasta. Karginov (Kamaz) was just 37 seconds behind, and Gerard De Rooy took third place. Reaching the finishing line just 6 minutes behind, the Dutch driver kept his leadership position, but lost a good part of his lead in the general classification, with a lead of just 7 minutes and 55 seconds over his main rival, Karginov. “It was a great stage – said De Rooy at the end of the stage – in an incredible setting. It was fun to drive but also very difficult, especially at the start of the stage, because of the sandy tracks and the extremely high dunes.” All four Iveco vehicles are still in the race: Hans Stacey is now in sixth position in the general rankings. Followed by the two Trakker of Vila and Adua, eleventh and twelfth respectively.

16 JANUARY, FROM ANTOFAGASTA TO EL SALVADOR

A puncture delays De Rooy This 605 kilometre difficult route brought the competitors from Antofagasta to El Salvador, with 350 kilometres through dry river beds and roads full of holes and stones. The second part of the route was characterised by 120 kilometres of sand and dunes through the famous Atacama desert and, once having passed one of the driest places on earth, another 135 kilometres of gravel and stones. “We had a good day, said De Rooy, but at the end of the stage we had a puncture.” It was the first puncture since the start of the Dakar and we lost ten or twelve minutes. Apart from this, we drove well, without making any errors.” A delay, however, that allowed Karginov to overtake De Rooy in the general classification and close the day with a lead of more than 7 minutes over the Dutchman. “The fight, however, is not yet finished” added a fierce Gerard de Rooy at the finish.

12

17 JANUARY, FROM EL SALVADOR TO LA SERENA

Constantly on the attack The penultimate stage of the Dakar 2014 saw an extremely determined Gerard De Rooy. On the dunes of Copiaco, the Dutchman set the pace and won the special trial, keeping ahead of his closest challengers. Karginov still had quite a big lead. The 31 seconds recuperated, in fact, were not enough to make inroads into the Russian’s lead of over 7 minutes. On the sand, terrain that until now had been especially favourable to the Kamaz vehicles, the vehicles of team Petronas De Rooy Iveco managed to hold their own with the Russians, while the Czech Ales Loprais in the Tatra had to give up half-way through the special trial. Hans Stacey also did well, sixth with the Iveco Trakker Evolution 3.

18 JANUARY, FROM LA SERENA TO VALPARAÍSO

A surprise finish After over 9 thousand kilometres and more than 55 hours of racing, victory was still in the balance with just 156 kilometres left to be timed. Just 156 kilometres in which to invest all one’s remaining energy. An incredible situation, unlike any other: usually the last stage is a final parade for everyone, so much so that it was decided to start cars and trucks together. And this is where the unexpected happened. Iveco on the attack right from the start with De Rooy and Stacey who immediately put the Russians under pressure. Then a dramatic turn of events. A vehicle damaged in an accident blocked the path of the Kamaz vehicles that lost precious time and the leadership of the race. De Rooy thereby took the lead in the general classification. But the celebrations did not last long because after a few minutes the jury decided to award the Russians the time lost in helping those involved in the accident. A situation similar to what happened at the start of the rally when De Rooy was awarded a bonus time. The illusion of victory vanished and everything went back to the way it was before, with De Rooy an excellent second just 3 minutes and 11 seconds behind Karginov. For Iveco and the team De Rooy there was still the satisfaction of having fought to the last metre of the race and of having brought all the vehicles over the finish line, with 3 vehicles in the first ten places of the classification. A great performance of the Iveco Trakker vehicles in the hardest race in the world.

Two areas in particular had many visitors: the history of Iveco at the Dakar Rally and the section “From Dakar to your job”, which highlighted the features of the new Trakker Euro 6. An important new aspect this year concerns the activities on the social networks, with direct links to the Iveco pages on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr and Picasa, full of written content, films and photos. The Facebook profile of Iveco hosts a page dedicated to the Dakar Rally, in addition to photos and information about the various stages, and there is an app that allows you to add a striking picture to your Facebook homepage: the race truck and the driver’s suit personalised with the name of the fan. On YouTube, finally, the videos of the team at Dakar have been among the most visited. Each day new videos are included in the dedicated playlist on the official Iveco channel. Unique and previously unpublished photos that are truly appreciated by fans of the most challenging off-road rally in the world.

These are the values that IVECO took into DAKAR 2014, the toughest and most extreme rally in the world. We torture-tested the technologies and performance of our IVECO vehicles for more than 9,000 km, subjecting them to all kinds of difficulties. As proof of the strength of our vehicles and the reliability of our IVECO Cursor 13 Euro VI engines, we came second, just 3 minutes behind the winner, with all our IVECO vehicles reaching the finish line. 2 nd Gerard De Rooy (IVECO) + 3m 11s • 7 th Hans Stacey (IVECO) + 5h 14m 57s 10 th Pep Vila Roca (IVECO) + 7h 53m 35s • 22 nd Jo Adua (IVECO) + 22h 18m 58s Special thanks to our great team.
