Incorrect PS3 clock shown on 1st March 2010 (8001050F error)

Image by PenLlawen As widely reported in the press, older model PS3s have login problems today. This was taken on my launch model 80Gb console and clearly the date and time are totally wrong. Given that today is March 1st, many people are suggesting this is a leap year bug of some sort. That seems likely to me, but it’s an odd one if so. Since launch, the PS3 has been through two non-leap-year Februarys (2007 and ’09) and one genuine leap year (in 2008) without problems. The timing is consistent with a hardware clock storing the time in UTC; for example, people in the GMT-5 timezone reported problems from 5AM. So far, the main problems reported are an inability to take the console online and corrupted save games. If so, I would expect the problem to resolve itself tomorrow, although save game corruption would likely be permanent. If the problem has longer-lasting side effects it could be good fun to see how Sony resolve this, as I don’t think the PS3 can receive a firmware flash without being connected to PSN.
