Ives Silver A three-year exploration studies in biology led Silver to pursue a career in architecture. He began his undergraduate studies in his home city of Puerto Rico in the biology department. Throughout the years he collaborated in multiple lab experiments and research, focusing on genetics and human anatomy. He continued his studies in his native Puerto Rico obtaining a B.Arch.(NAAB), from the Polytechnic University School of Architecture in Puerto Rico(PUPR) in 2011. Through out that period he took part in diverse studios abroad, including Mexico D.F. and Barcelona, always implementing biological systems as conceptual design strategies. An essential part of his academic and professional training was the involvement in sustainability competitions and workshops. While being a 2013 candidate for an M.Arch, Master in Advanced and Digital Architecture at the Barcelona School of Design and Engineering (ELISAVA), he researched the topic of natural systems design focusing on animal architecture and geometries of natural patterns. In his design proposals, he looks to push the limits in the design field through the influences of his biology studies. Ivesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s professional interests meet at the intersection of 3D modeling, 2D drafting, graphic communication, user experience and the research of biological systems for pragmatic architectural solutions. His work experiences include working at an international level with Willy MĂźller Architects(2009) and Enric Miralles Benedetta Tagliabue Architects(2013) in Barcelona, where he worked conducting conceptual design and project visualization for multiple presentations. He performed at different scenarios focusing on his design solution skills, while multitasking under tight deadlines. Managing designs from early sketches to the completion stage of construction documents. Silver is currently working as a Designer and Brand Strategist for Mr. Peter Arnell. His daily tasks include executing strategies for brand development, as well as art directing and designing presentations for multiple international clients. Having a broad set of tools and knowledge within the field of design, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the perfect fit for the designer position. As the next goal in his professional career, he looks forward in being part of your design team collaborating with the ongoing success of your company.

Sketching Visualization

Urban Sketching : In the first sketch I concentrated on the enclosure tectonics of the cathedral, while increasing the vanishing point in the perspective to define the fencing elements. In the second drawing a more detailed one, I wanted to reinforce the tunnel spatial condition of the open air commercial strip.

FRUIT ON WHEELS FRUIT ON WHEELS : In this design project a light commercial space is propose, which focus on healthy food and natural beverages. DEPOT HOUSING : The primary target of the design is the reuse of the scaffolding from Home Depot franchise, creating extra rooms for guests . RECYCLING PLANT : The project intend to solve the urban waste crisis in the Island of Puerto Rico implementing a Recycling Facility, and at the same time being a museum to educate the citizen about the landfills scenario.

Conceptual Visualization

GREEN URBAN SPOTS : Here we can see the evolution of a conceptual sketch idea, to the completion of the project. In it we can observe how the volume exploration progress, helped to reach a design where the two programs, the commercial and religious can co-exist . Taking into consideration the factor that there are no green spaces near the urban area, the design integrates vegetation in most of the building spaces.

The buildings material for this project were taken into account by the location, access and for faster assembly speed. Concrete portland was used for the building structure, working thru the concrete forming technique for a better and quick construction. Also implementing rebar rods to enhance the structure stability.

donation urn : In this project I was in charge of the three-dimensional modeling for an urn previously designed by Enric Miralles. The construction of the model was necessary for the fabrication of it. Then some visualizations were conducted so the blacksmith could see and understand the materiality of the design. In the pictures we can see the built work.

Morphoemergence - excerpt -

A frequently discuss topic in the architectural field is the one of emergence. This particular word has a really strong meaning within itself. The term definition is the disposition or creation of a form, a shape or a pattern, in reaction to information of data inputs or simple natural changes. Emergence is a trending topic recently, but since the beginning of the XX century architects as Buckminister Fuller, Frei Otto and Antonio Gaudí, were experimenting with this behavior as their architectural generation techniques, through different types of materials and experimenting with their physical properties. The method now we call Form Finding, this means that the morphology that is achieved as a final result, is the sum of natural physics forces acting on a material. Understanding the intelligence of the material through its properties and using it to its advantage. In Fuller we can see this examples in his geodesic domes, or in the “tensegrity” model. Which in both examples we can appreciate independent elements working as a whole with its neighbor element, to create a new emergent geometry at a greater scale.

in the Multihalle Manheim, in which similar but not the same as Fuller, he combines the wood profiles in an organized cluster createing a wood profile mesh. This net generate a macro effect where the structure can be sustained by itself through compression, thanks to the geometric formation from the neighbor wood profile. Meanwhile in Antonio Gaudi’s work the Crypt of Colonia Guell we appreciate how the architect starts to understand the physical properties and limitations of the brick for the construction of its vault system. Understanding through exploration how he can use them for its advantage. He used this material as a result of exploration of forms, trying to emulate the chains continuity. Physical phenomenon that he explore through the catenaries system, used to experiment in different for different proposals.

We can see how the curvature shapes appears from the combination of a few chains in suspension, plus adding the implementation of weights at a certain distance and position. Creating geometries and emergent spaces with the help of natural forces in this case gravity. In recent times at different professional designer’s field are implementing In Frei Otto, we can enviromental criterias as solar observe the emergence behavior radiation, wind or gravity as a design

approach, and letting the design emerge from these interactions, trigering a hands off design. Also known as natural design, it involves an extensive analysis of the materials properties, their behavior and how this one relates or reacts within the natural environment and its constant changes. This lead that simple interactions as the catenaries suspended chain system of Antonio Gaudi, create a more define and complex system as it is in Sagrada Familia. The behavior where complex systems are built by simple and basic interactions, is present in most educational fields, mostly in biology, physics and chemistry. This is because they all have the natural systems in common as a reference and as a base of study of research. The term is known as morphogenesis, presented in 1954 by Alan Turing, in which he demonstrated how in biology the organisms are developed in a more complex way even though having simple origins. Turing in his text explain to us how this systems made by individual elements, can react in a independent manner to benefit the whole of the system by basic stimuli, similar to the computational language. Animal Architecture - excerpt -

The ability of someone or something to achieve a certain goal is known as efficiency. In physics the performance of a process or a device is the ratio between the useful energy and energy invested. Efficiency is a principle very present in the natural world, and in recent years in which our profession of architecture begins to wonder whether our interventions in buildings or in the environment go hand by hand with nature, or are at least efficient in terms of the materials being. Or if otherwise our modern buildings are programmable modern gravestones, which would be a natural antithesis. Where the built element is â&#x20AC;&#x153;aliveâ&#x20AC;? but through indiscriminate use of energy. Which leads us to question whether there will be efficiency and understanding in what we call architecture. Construction on the natural world has always responded to the proper distribution of materials and the implementation of these across different organisms of the animal kingdom. Despite the wide difference between these organisms all have some similarities when creating spaces, they might create them as a communication tools, as a mechanism for food , but most of all the animal realm create structures to survive. Whether to protect from atmospheric environmental factors, pests or predators. The fauna is always on the look of modifying their environment in a more controlled one, through their creations or interventions,
