WITTGENSTEIN HOUSE culture house First pre-graduation project Individual academic work Spring 2015

Wittgenstein House is originally the house of the austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. It is currently housing the Bulgarian culture institute. The assignment consist of three parts. The first is conceptual restoration of the house as it first was when build. The second part seeks to activate the ground floor as it is inherent for the western tradition (as opposite to the east where the activities are turned inwards) while preserving the original structure and design. The third part comprises of a “double” that is placed in a different place and could be modified according to the concept and situation. The theme is culture house.

New Bulgarian University Architecture Department Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Arch. Zarko Uzunov

The proposed design (part II of the assingment) defines “structural” elements, that pass through all the planes (floors) without changing. These elements are used as fulcrum for extension of the ground floor areas to the borders of the plot and thus activate the ground floor by creating entry points from all the streets surrounding the house. The resulting element is then translated on the west-east axis and scaled physically as well as functionally. Beside the active ground floor, the building is also saturated with additional functions typical for a culture house on the principle of squatting.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH CENTRE Specialized zones - Business park Individual academic work Autumn 2014

The task is to develop a Scientific Research Centre with laboratories and services for the workers-namely: canteen, small conference rooms, offices and outdoor and indoor sports. In addition a small conference hall for about 200-300 people should be added. The site is located in The Student’s city - a neighbourhood in southern Sofia which hosts the greater number of the city’s universities and their dormitories. There is serious automobile and pedestrian traffic along the boulevards and towards the park and a sort of public square has emerged around the intersection. The functional distribution comes from the move-

ments of the people as the center of the site houses the sports activities and the canteen while the peripheria takes on the laboratories. The parking is situated near the laboratories and is surrounded by greenery which would isolate the noise and also shade the inner court during the summer, when the weather is hot. The concept conforms to the context by reduction of the height of the units in the places where the biggest pedestrian traffic is located so they don’t hinder the views and visual connections. Metal mesh along the facades serves as sun shading device and also reduces the visibility from outside to the interior.

NATIONAL EXHIBITION CENTRE renovation Preservation of architectural heritage Individual academic work Spring 2014

Main Tasks: An improved space arrangement of the interior; A new facade design; Re-design and utilization of the rooftop of NEC. The new proposal aims at providing more access for the general public and attracting new visitors with a modernized look. The depreciated auxiliary buildings in the inner court are removed and the court opens for the visitors by becoming a sculpture garden accessible either from the street or through the building. Most internal barriers on the ground floor are removed, the cafe is reworked

New Bulgarian University Architecture Department Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. PhD. Arch.Vesela Popova

as a part of the exhibition center and an information point is added. The whole level becomes a well lit exhibition space with the possibility for video screenings and display of bigger art pieces thanks to the floor height of over 5m. The private offices for rent on the other floors are removed and in their place are created a library and a number of publicly available galleries. Small spaces near the freight elevator are reserved for offices of NEC and repositories. The gallery halls are preserved and skylight is added on the last level. The roof is utilized by becoming a coffee-bar with a terrace with a view of Sofia’s historical centre.

Traffic

The main traffic goes through the northern street /Shipka str./, while less cars and people pass through the smaller western street /St. Kliment Ohridski/.

Perception and visibility

The building is mainly percieved by walking along the western and northern streets and is almost imperceptible from the inner court. The presence of numerous trees in the garden of the National library makes it it even harder to see.

Before/after schemes Site/entrance

The concept of the proposal originates from the different typology of building from the east there are smaller, more compact buildings (mainly residential), while on the west, towards the historical city center there are bigger structures public and administrative buildings. The building‘s facade acts as a transition form one type to the other.

COURTHOUSE with office administration Public buildings and complexes Individual academic work Fall 2012

The chosen site is adjacent to one of the main boulevards of Sofia, that connects the city center with the western suburbs. The neighbourhood is primarily residential with low-rise houses and multi-family buildings on one side and a number of eight/twelve storey multi-apartment buildings on the other side of the boulevard. Nearby is located a small park and there are also a couple of public facilities - cinema, school, hospital and training zone for firefighters as well as Police Station. The immediate area around the plot is not densely populated but it is in a walking distance of the high-rise residential building.

New Bulgarian University Architecture Department Supervisor: Prof. Arch. Konstantin Bojadziev

The design attempts to comply with the context as it is turned towards the main axes. The building is located in the west part of the plot, moved inward by 10 meters to create a green barrier towards the traffic. The building consists of two units - one for the courthouse and one for the offices. The courtrooms are facing the city center and are also visualy closed off, as this is is a heavylly trafficked boulevard. The office area is facing the smaller internal street and its entrance is also close to the intersection. The two units are slightly outspread in the north side to create a visual connection to the park and also a relativeley secluded inner court.

Iveta Migarova Teodora Haralanova Mitko Anataoliev

Swing dance emerged in 1927 in the USA and quickly gained international popularity for its energetic nature and dynamics. Nowadays the swing revival throughout Bulgaria is gaining more and more followers and is in need of a distinguished place where parties, contests and tournaments would be held. The elongated shape of the Ferdinand Stables and the height of the indoor spaces offer the opportunity for creating a special place where the swing culture will thrive. Two main functions will be distinguished for this purpose – dance halls with adjacent service rooms and a nonstop bar & dinner on

New Bulgarian University St. Ferdinand’s Stables Tutor: Phd. Arch. Kliment Ivanov

The access to the building is performed from two places – a central foyer compositionally dividing the elongated volume of the building making the proportions easier to perceive on a human scale with an explicit form, and a side entrance near the intersection leading only to the bar & dinner on the second level where the main flow of people is. The glass volumes at both entrances and the dynamic roof layout represent a contemporary view while the stripped brick facade and the display of the original roof construction create a historical reference to century
