il3: Where are you located now? @
SH: 1m in the very centre of Brighton. I work in a fantastic local pub, the Lord Nelson Inn, and am surrounded by our best small venues but i don't really get out that much. TP: In two places because I spend a lot of my time along the English south coast on a train between Sussex and Hampshire. Half the time in Brighton, where I live. Half the time in Portsmouth, where I grew up, and where our studio, The Red Shed, is located. il3: How's the scene there? SH: sussex has some beautiful scenes. It's a stunning place with sea and hills. TP: You might be asking the wrong person that question ;) il3: Why did you guys start? Why are you a band? SH: We started way back in 2006 because we were in a room with some instruments, bored of the music we were hearing on the radio - so we kind of stumbled upon our first record. TP: I wouldn't say this was a traditional band set up. I used to be in bands where you'd do everything together, 24-7. Rent a crappy van. Drive to shows. Sleep in the van. Or anywhere you could. Take on the world together. And I loved doing that. But now I value spending a lot more time alone. I'm focused on the songs. I enjoy writing. The lyrics and the music. Juxtaposing both and overlaying melodies is liberating for me. It's an escape, it's freedom, it's a sanctuary. It's a little part of the world I can control and shape. The performance aspect is very important too. To be able to communicate a song to an audience. It's a rare and precious thing. That kind of undiluted rapport happens less and less thesedays in a world of technological devices. That raw, live connectionis very special. Just as it was when I was growing up watching bands. And it's still that way for me now, on stage in my own band.
il3: It's,?ood to know that your debut album is on the list of "best 120 albums by the Sunday Telegraph, and it's also released by DFA So how does itfeel to be the least commercially viable group ever Signed to a major label? @

SH: Bringing down EMI has been a pleasure! No, seriously I think that any label willing to back us and our music is brave. Not everything is about money. Art can be swallowed up in the business but music should be the art. People put their faith in us and invest time and love and care. TP: It's all perception. Opinion. Commercial viability? I've always been skint so it doesn't matter a huge amount whether we're commercially viable or non viable. I totally get that mainstream popularity = appealing to a wide variety of people. But I don't make music with that in mind. I'm selfish about my reasons for making music. It's my blood. And I'm not diluting my blood. It's the one thing I do where I can say fuck everyone else and exist in my own little bubble and just obsess about noise and words. It's true, the resulting noise may not appeal to everyone. Some people hate it. That used to affect me. I'd think what a load of narrow minded cunts. Fuck those pricks. But now I'm of the opinion that we just have different tastes. I don't seek anyones approval. We actually seem to be winning over a whole new audience with our last album and especially with the brand new record. Even the haters, I don't even mind them anymore. There is a feeling inside yourself that tells you if a song is working or if a song isn't working. There is no way to cheat that. That feeling you get is the toughest critic of all.
il3: "You Are The Space Invader" was used as the soundtrack to the trailerfor the movie Transformers, so was that inspiring momentfor the band,especially when it happensjust one year after thefirst release?
SH: It was good yeah as they paid us some money. You don't earn
much money unless you have deals like commercials. This only happened because a guy in the HBO office was a fan and used it. We are flattered, although I've never seen the trailer. Our poster was used in a Ben Stiller film too and that was quite exciting .as we didn't know until we were told by friends live from movie theatres. TP: It's strange if I'm out and I hear one of our songs on the radio etc. I start to think that bass is too quiet! Or that snare drum might need a tweak! And I'm standing in the kebab shop or sitting in a taxi mentally remixing the song. Thankfully it doesn't happen very often. But I'm happy with our music being used that way. I'm proud of the music Suzi and I have written, recorded, produced and released. I love all kinds of music. I think it's great to hear all kinds of music on the radio, in films, in the street. I wish it would happen more. It's so fucking patronising and lazy of radio stations to play mundane, background, wallpaper music all day long. il3: Once we talked, but 1don't remember now, what is the connection with LCD Soundsystem, you were on tour together or 'what?
SH: We toured with them yes. They are our friends. Good times. They always let us share their dressing rooms if ours were smelly! We are still in touch with them and see them regularly when they are dj-ing. TP: We met back in 2007 when we mixed our first album with James Murphy at Plantain in New York. James, Nancy, Pat and the gang, we became friends. We supported LCD Soundsystem on their UK Tour the same year and in 2008. Brixton Academy, London Astoria (before it was demolished), Glasgow Barrowlands etc. Great venues. And the first time we had ever played such big stages which was pretty daunting at the time. A great, crazy, unforgettable adventure with some lovely people.

On Our second album "Clay CI " cordmg h ass we worked for ~on~ s and months inside our own little studio The Red Shed e ardly left that tiny space for a year. But w~ made this rec~rd
very differently. Because we really wanted to capture the beautiful "first takes" you only usually get in early demos. We wrote and recorded in various rooms and houses and homes. Making what were pretty much field recordings. We didn't want to make demos and then try to recreate the subtle nuances and emotions of each take. So we could introduce a little more quietness and tenderness. And even little a~oustic par.ts. It .was a big step for us - we needed to develop location rec.()rd~ngkit and get used to recording outside of the red shed and III different spaces / environments. I'm really glad we did because we have so many new tones and colours on this record that we wouldn't have achieved any other way.
H3: Any plans for the near future?
SH: Lots! TP: The record is released soon so we need all the usual things in place. Artwork and videos etc. These things are all consuming. They can be a pain in the arse too. But the bottom line is that they are very important to us. That's why we get so involved, designing and screen printing our own record sleeves, shooting our own videos. JW:I started in 2006 ranting over samples from my favourite records after being influenced by hip hop. Iwould cover experiences mainly drawn from from my own life which was in turmoil. I became inspired by this and that was the main body of Sleaford mods until I met Andrew in 2009 who brought original music to Sleaford mods and this ushered in a new era not only in a music sense but my lyrics became more political and less insular. We met our manager Steve Underwood around this time and he started getting us gigs in Europe and that's when the UK started to take interest. It's snowballed since then.
