Plitvice Lakes National Park is the first and most famous national park in Croatia, which attracts more than a million visitors a year, who come to admire a complex of 16 lakes, numerous bigger and smaller waterfalls, Šupljara cave and rich vegetation. The park consists of Upper and Lower lakes out of which 12 upper ones. The biggest and best known is lake Kozjak which is 46 meters deep. Rastoke is a small picturesque settlement near the city of Slunj. Marija Bistrica is a little town located in Krapina-Zagorje Region, 40km from the capital city of Zagreb. In Marija Bistrica there is an old Marian shrine of the Black Madonna visited by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year. In 1545 a local priest hid the wonder-working statue of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus from the Turks in a secret location. In 1588 bright light shone from the place where it was buried and, according to the records, it was discovered again. On 3 October 1998, Pope John Paul II visited Marija Bistrica and beatified Croatian Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac.

VELIKI TABOR Veliki Tabor is a fortress and a museum from the 12th century, located three kilometres east of Desinić in the Zagorje Region. The Five-Cornered Tower is the oldest part of the castle built in the 12th century. Other towers were built in the 15th and the 16th century. Croatian noble family Rattkay were the owners until 1793 and they built most of the castle. Oton Iveković, a Croatian painter, owned the castle from 1927 until 1935 and today it is owned by the state.

Koprivnica is the central and the biggest city in Koprivnica-Križevci County. It is situated 85 km northeast of Zagreb and was named after a creek that runs through the city. Despite its turbulent history, the city has managed to preserve a substantial part of its cultural-historical architectural heritage. The entire historical city center represents a unique monument unit that keeps attracting more visitors and tourists. Križevci is one of the oldest medieval cities in northern Croatia and was first mentioned in the documents of the King Bella III in 1193 under the name of Cris (cross). When in Bjelovar, make sure to visit Bjelovar City Museum, situated at Eugen Kvaternik Square, the late baroque cathedral of St Teresa of Avila from 1756, and Bjelovar Music Pavilion in the central park – the largest stone pavilion in Europe.
Čazma is situated on the slopes of Moslavačka Gora in central Croatia and is only 60 kilometers away from Zagreb. PAPUK It is situated in the mountainous areas of Papuk mountain and was declared a nature park in 1999. This diverse geological area is the first and only geopark in Croatia. The rocks are more than 400 million years old, and the first Croatian geological nature monument – Rupnica – is situated within its borders. There are educational trails to follow through the locality. The main feature of the park is the neverending beech forest – a habitat to deer, roe deer, wild boars, foxes, and martens. Don’t miss out on a visit to Jankovac forest park, which represents a unique forest vegetation reservation.
Požega is a city of long history and was first mentioned in 1227 when Fort Požega was declared a Royal Estate. Today, this is where the Old City - the City Park with a promenade - is situated, which offers a breathtaking view of the city and its surroundings. Holy Trinity Square is the central place in the city. It is situated between the rivers of Drava and Danube and is a home to more than 290 bird species, such as the white-tailed eagle, the white and black stork, the purple heron... The park is the largest protected wetland in the entire Danube tributary area. It is situated between Sisak and Nova Gradiška, and it includes three fields (wetland areas): Lonjsko, Mokro and Poganovo. SISAK Sisak is one of the oldest settlements in central Croatia since the evidence of it can be traced back to the 4th century BC. The best way to get to know this city is by taking a relaxing walk. Start at Slave Striegla Promenade, where you will be able to feel the puls of the city, and continue to Mali Kaptol – one of the oldest brick houses from the 18th century. LONJSKO POLJE NATURE PARK The park is the largest protected wetland in the entire Danube tributary area. It is situated between Sisak and Nova Gradiška, and it includes three fields (wetland areas): Lonjsko, Mokro and Poganovo. The park is a home to 58 different mammal species, 16 amphibian species, 10 reptile species, 38 types of dragonfly, 33 different fish species, and an amazing number of 250 various bird species. There are 550 registered plant species in the park area, including the exquisite water clover.
ZAGREB Zagreb is the capital of the Republic of Croatia and its cultural, scientific, economic, political and administrative centre. NATURE PARK MEDVEDNICA In 1981 the western part of Medvednica mountain, which rises north of Zagreb, was declared a nature park. There are 91 protected plant species in the park, including the yew tree that is on the list of endangered plant species in Europe. Animal kingdom used to be more diverse but the park is still a home to small animals, roe deer and wild boars, wildcats, foxes, martens and weasels. The 24 different types of bats deserve a special mention. When visiting the mountain, make sure to visit Veternica Cave, Zrinski Mine and Medvedgrad, where you can enjoy a spectacular view of Zagreb.
SAMOBOR Samobor is located only 20 kilometers away from Zagreb and is, therefore, the oldest and most beloved day trip destination of people from Zagreb, hikers, trekkers and both Croatian and foreign tourists. Due to its rich gastronomic tradition, as well as numerous organised events, the city attracts food lovers who gladly frequent Samobor. Those who visit Samobor do not leave without trying the famous Samobor creamy cake – kremšnita. ŽUMBERAK - SAMOBORSKO GORJE NATURE PARK The area of Žumberak and Samoborsko Gorje was declared a nature park in 1999. It is situated in the nortwestern part of Croatia. The park can be reached from Samobor, Jastrebarsko, and Ozalj, as well as from Krašić and Klinča Sela. Area of special protection include landscape of Slapnica near Krašić, special reservation of forest vegetation Japetić, and parkforest Okić Grad with its surroundings. Marija Bistrica is a little town located in Krapina-Zagorje Region, 40km from the capital city of Zagreb. In Marija Bistrica there is an old Marian shrine of Marian shrine of the Mother of God of Bistrica visited by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year. In 1545 a local priest hid the wonderworking statue of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus from the Turks in a secret location. In 1588 bright light shone from the place where it was buried and, according to the records, it was discovered again. On 3 October 1998, Pope John Paul II visited Marija Bistrica and beatified Croatian Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac.
Krapina, first mentioned in 1193, is located in the Zagorje Region. In the 14th century Krapina was a free royal trading place and a residence of the Croatian governor until the end of the 15th century. Krapina is best known for the remains belonging to Neanderthals, excavated by an archaeologist and a palaeontologist Dragutin Gorjanović Kramberger in a cave on a hill called Hušnjakovo near Krapina in 1899. Today, there are reconstructions of pre-historic men and animals in front of the cave. The Evolution Museum with a permanent exhibition was opened on the site.
Veliki Tabor is a fortress and a museum from the 12th century, located three kilometres east of Desinić in the Zagorje Region. The Five-Cornered Tower is the oldest part of the castle built in the 12th century. Other towers were built in the 15th and the 16th century. Croatian noble family Rattkay were the owners until 1793 and they built most of the castle. Oton Iveković, a Croatian painter, owned the castle from 1927 until 1935 and today it is owned by the state.

Nikola Zrinski was the owner of the property in the middle of the 17th century for several years. Koprivnica is the central and the biggest city in Koprivnica-Križevci County. It is situated 85 km northeast of Zagreb and was named after a creek that runs through the city. Despite its turbulent history, the city has managed to preserve a substantial part of its culturalhistorical architectural heritage. The entire historical city center represents a unique monument unit that keeps attracting more visitors and tourists. Aside from its sights, the city is also famous for a rich tourist offer that includes a Reneissance Festival, which is organized along the city walls every summer.
Križevci is one of the oldest medieval cities in northern Croatia and was first mentioned in the documents of the King Bella III in 1193 under the name of Cris (cross). The city is proud of its eight church towers located on town access roads in such a way as to form the symbol of a cross. There are many important sights in the city that date from different time periods and which serve as public and cultural institutions today. Križevci and its surroundings form an attractive area of natural, historical, and cultural resources, parks, lakes, traditional wine cellars, and vineyards.
Bjelovar, which is situated on the southern part of Bilogora, is a city of centuries-old tradition of milk and cheese production and is sometimes referred to as ‘the city of cheese’. It was founded in 1756 at the initiative of empress Maria Theresa and is considered one of the youngest cities in Croatia. When in Bjelovar, make sure to visit Bjelovar City Museum, situated at Eugen Kvaternik Square, the late baroque cathedral of St Teresa of Avila from 1756, and Bjelovar Music Pavilion in the central park – the largest stone pavilion in Europe.
Čazma is situated on the slopes of Moslavačka Gora in central Croatia and is only 60 kilometers away from Zagreb. Virovitica is a city situated in the southeastern part of Croatia, near the Drava River and Croatian-Hungarian border. It is a city of rich historical and cultural heritage so make sure to visit Pejačević Palace, a zerocategory monument dating from the second half of the 18th century. One of the most beautiful castles of Slavonija is Pejačević Castle, built in a baroque-classicist style. Virovitica City Museum is located in the castle. In the Franciscan Monastery you can visit the Museum of Sacral Art and Cultural and Historical Heritage.
It is situated in the mountainous areas of Papuk mountain and was declared a nature park in 1999. This diverse geological area is the first and only geopark in Croatia. The rocks are more than 400 million years old, and the first Croatian geological nature monument – Rupnica – is situated within its borders. There are educational trails to follow through the locality. The main feature of the park is the neverending beech forest – a habitat to deer, roe deer, wild boars, foxes, and martens. Don’t miss out on a visit to Jankovac forest park, which represents a unique forest vegetation reservation.
Požega is a city of long history and was first mentioned in 1227 when Fort Požega was declared a Royal Estate. Today, this is where the Old City the City Park with a promenade - is situated, which offers a breathtaking view of the city and its surroundings. Holy Trinity Square is the central place in the city. This is where the Monument to Plague from 1749, St Lawrence Church, the Church of the Holy Spirit and a Franciscan Monastery, and Požega City Theater are all situated. The city of Kutjevo is situated in central Slavonija along the slopes of Krndija mountain. It is a city of rich historical heritage. First mentioned over 770 years ago it still remains recognized for its world-famous Kutjevo wine, which has a tradition that dates back to Medieval, even Roman, times. The tour of Kutjevo begins at Graševina Square, a quaint little vineyard in the heart of the city with a barrel on which the city’s coat of arms is painted. Kutjevo Castle represents one of the most important baroque buildings of central Slavonija.
Slavonski Brod is situated near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina and is an important railway junction for the west-east and north-south directions. Even though the very beginnings of the settlement go back to the times of Roman Empire (Marsunnia), the city first started acquiring its current shape around the beginning of the 18th century. Urban shape and medieval spirit are still best recognized in case of the Brod Fortress and the Franciscan Monastery. Našice is more than a 700-years-old city in the heart of Slavonija, which prides in its beautiful landscape and nature but also recreational and archeological tourism. Start your tour by visiting the Church of St Anthony of Padua and be sure to visit the library of the Franciscan Monastery. Make time to visit the old castle of count Pejačević from 1811 as well as his mausoleum and chapel from 1881, next to which the grave of the first female Croatian composer, the countess Dora Pejačević, is located. In the castle there is the Homeland Museum.
Located in the beautiful heart of Slavonija, Đakovo offers a myriad of historical, cultural and natural sights to its visitors. The most important sacral monument is St Peter’s Cathedral, whose towers guardingly overlook the city. The Lipizzan horses are the pride and joy of the city and they witness a long tradition of horse breeding in this area. The State Stud Farm was first established in 1506 and is one of the oldest such farms in Europe. Make sure to plan your visit to Đakovo in July because this is when Đakovački vezovi, a festival of Đakovo Embroidery, takes place.
‘The City on Drava River’ – Osijek is situated only 20 kilometers away from the mouth of the Drava and Danube River. As the fourth most largest Croatian city Osijek represents a cultural, economic, and academic center of Slavonija and Baranja. The city’s rich history is best seen in its architecture, traditions, and gastronomy. Sightseeing begins with a visit to Tvrđa, which is an 18th-century fort. The biggest sacral monument in the city is the Co-Cathedral of St Peter and Paul. Make sure to visit ‘Kompa’, a river-ferry that will take you to the left bank of the Drava River.
Almost 700-years-old city offers various points of interest to its visitors. Prandau-Normann castle is the most important historical-cultural monument. Valpovo promenade, with its park, was declared a horticultural monument of nature and park architecture. It is possible to go angling on the nearby rivers, lakes, and ponds as well as hunting in the surrounding woods. Slavonian specialities include venison and freshwater fish as well as exquisite wines as part of what Valpovština has to offer during the Valpovo Summer cultural event.
The first mention of Donji Miholjac dates from the 11th century and refers to the construction of the Church of St Michael. The location on the Drava River defines the city as a transit tourist center. A beautiful neo-gothic castle Mailath, with park, is a protected horticultural monument and the main tourist sight. Miholjačko Gathering is the most important event, including traditional folk costumes, songs, and dances as well as a rich gastronomic offer. It is possible to go hunting in the nearby surroundings and the fishponds, and the Drava River offers numerous angling opportunities.
Beli Manastir is the administrative center of Baranja. It was declared a city not earlier than 1961. In the Middle Ages (13th century) a monastery (Pel Monošor) was located there and its remains represent the city’s most interesting sight – the Lojmir locality. Sacral objects include the baroque Parish Church of St Martin from 1777, which was restored in the 19th and 20th century, and a parochial church from 1759. Make sure to visit Bansko Brdo – a popular excursion spot and lookout. Numerous events worth visiting include Baranja Autumn.
Kopački Rit Nature Park is one of the biggest and best-preserved European wetlands. It is situated between the rivers of Drava and Danube and is a home to more than 290 bird species, such as the white-tailed eagle, the white and black stork, the purple heron... Dozens of other animal species also live here, such as deer, wild boars, badgers, beavers, foxes and martens... The park has also been internationally recognized as a place of ornithological importance and was enlisted on the ‘Ramsar List’ (List of Wetlands of International Importance).
Vukovar is located on the border of historical provinces of Eastern Slavonija and Western Srijem and is not only the biggest Croatian river port but also an important transit station. It is a city of rich history, cultural and natural heritage, and tradition. There are two museums for you to visit if you want to understand its cultural heritage – Vukovar Municipal Museum and Vučedol Culture Museum. The city is also famous for its baroque architecture, and its most recognized symbol is the Vučedol Dove.
Vinkovci is a city situated on the Bosut River, only 15 kilometers away from Vukovar. People have been living here ever since the Stone Age, and Orion is a valuable discovery proving it. It is a ceramic vessel with black and white ornaments that actually represents the oldest Indo-European calendar. During the Antiquity this is where the settlement of Cibalae was situated and where two Roman emperors – Valentinian and Valens - were born. The most important cultural events in Vinkovci are Vinkovačke jeseni (Vinkovci Autumn) and Roman Days.
Ilok, the easternmost town in Croatia, is situated on the Danube and surrounded by magnificent vineyards of Fruška Gora. It is a city of long history with its medieval center representing one of the biggest urban and fortification complexes of Northern Croatia and the Danube basin. Wine lovers should by all means visit this city that prides in having served Ilok Traminac and Silvanac wines at the coronation of Queen Elisabeth II. The Ilok Wine Road, which runs through the city and its surroundings, offers an opportunity of wine tasting and a tour of the cellars.

Plitvice Lakes National Park is the first and most famous national park in Croatia, which attracts more than a million visitors a year, who come to admire a complex of 16 lakes, numerous bigger and smaller waterfalls, Šupljara cave and rich vegetation. The park consists of Upper and Lower lakes out of which 12 upper ones. The biggest and best known is lake Kozjak which is 46 meters deep. The main attraction, however, is the Great Waterfall which is 78 meters high and listed as the highest in Croatia. National Park Plitvice has been listed on the UNESCO Natural Heritage List.
RASTOKE Rastoke is a small picturesque settlement near the city of Slunj. This is where the blue-green water of the Slunjčica River runs across the travertine rocks into the Korana river, shaping a number of waterfalls, rapids, small lakes, and cascades along its way. According to some records, the settlement dates from the 17th century.
