Butterfly gets its name from the “butterfly” shape created by the outer corner that joins the armrest and the backrest. It is a modular seating system that responds effectively to the needs of modularity and comfort, suitable for free and informal usage. Its modular structure is shaped around an ottoman, which is the base piece, and which, when integrated with the backrest and/or the armrest, becomes a central or terminal element, either left or right. The combination of these elements, using a simple joint system, makes it possible to freely set up versatile configurations, from in-line sofas to corner solutions, from front-facing to lounge layouts. This first textile sofa in B&B Italia Outdoor collection is characterised by soft and sinuous shapes. Completely upholstered, it leverages the company’s production technology, with materials and solutions designed for outdoor use, in order to take outdoors the quality and comfort that has always characterized indoor seating. The system includes a family of complements, small tables and consoles, seamlessly integrated with the seats, making it possible to design many compositions suitable for different space customization requirements. The strong material component of Butterfly’s cover and the softness of its shapes are an invitation to comfort, which, together with the modularity of the system, make it ideal for transversal projects, from hotels to marine applications. The Butterfly complements have an outline that perfectly follows the lines of the sofa, harmoniously flanking the seat at the top. The family consists of round, square and rectangular low tables and a small table featuring a large weave pattern, made of tortora coloured twisted polyethylene fibres that wraps around the grey painted aluminium frame. Two finishes are available for the surfaces of the complements: white Carrara statuarietto marble or thermo-treated ash wooden slats.

FAT-SOFA OUT DOOR by Patricia Urquiola

The rounded, soft and sinuous shapes of the Fat-Sofa seating system are the base for the new outdoor version, characterized by a brand new interlacing design. Its fully padded seat is accompanied by a metal frame backrest that supports the original weave, creating a special play of fullness and emptiness. The large weave pattern, made of tortora coloured twisted polyethylene fibres, makes the design unique, respecting the designer’s idea of lightness, transparency and puts the furnishings in an open “dialogue” with the surrounding environment. Fat-Sofa Outdoor consists of six types, ranging from the linear sofa (230 cm) to a large relax island, from two height variants of the armchair to a range of different sizes of ottomans. The new collection of fabrics, available also on the large back cushions, creates evocative colour and visual combinations.

FABRICS AND MAT ERIALS

The vocation for research, a hallmark of B&B Italia, is now expressed in outdoor furniture, a field that requires constant research in high-tech, innovative materials to ensure certificate technical characteristics. A new, broad range of fabrics with colours and textures exclusive to B&B Italia brings new chromatic combinations to seats and pillows, and ensures quick drying times. They are all certified for resistance to weathering, UV rays, chlorine and salty air.

FABRICS NO-WATERPROOF FABRICS The softness of the new Butterfly seats and of the Fat-Sofa is particularly emphasized by a new fabric cover with a very eye-catching pattern, which gives strong materiality to the product, both in neutral and in more vibrant colours (Lesia). New decorative fabrics are also available, ranging from striped patterns and geometric patterns to flowers (Efeso, Lipari). LESIA - EFESO - LIPARI - 100% Polipropilene Products upholstered with this no waterproof fabrics require special care and attention, as water wet the fabric. Even if the internal polyester cover with waterproof treatment protects against the seepage of liquids, when harsh weather occurs, the padding could get wet. The drying time is longer compared to waterproof fabrics and can be easily spotted. B&B Italia suggests leaving products in â&#x20AC;&#x153;coveredâ&#x20AC;? areas (verandas, gazebos, etc.) and always protecting them against the elements with a cloth cover.

FABRICS IMPERMEABLE FABRICS Impermeable fabrics fight off dry soil and nasty, unpredictable spills and splashes, allowing liquids to bead up and roll off. Liquid spills can easily be wiped away when blotted with a clean cloth, and dry soil can be brushed off easily. ALCEO - 50% PVC, 50% Poliestere Marine fabric highly resistant to external agents that has been tested for outdoor use. The fabric is designed for outdoor use without special maintenance needs: simply rubbing with a damp sponge removes any stain.

UPHOLSTERY In order to ensure higher quality also to outdoor furniture, that more than others is subjected to the weather, B&B Italia has devoted particular attention to the materials used. In particular, to improve insulation, all the padded elements have a polyester cover with a waterproof treatment. To counter the penetration of liquids even more effectively, the seams of the covers are made with a special yarn with a water repellent finish, which prevents the water to pass through, preventing it from being absorbed by the yarn and penetrating through the cloth. Carefully tensioned stitching prevents the passage of water through the needle hole.
