Iittala Collection 2011

Timeless design since 1881. The Iittala factory was built by a lake in a Finnish village called Iittala in 1881. All essentials were close at hand. Wood, water and sand were our ingredients. Today Iittala is a leading Scandinavian design brand from Finland, and like Finnish people we follow our intuition. We trust in objects for the home that are honest, functional and inspired by everyday life.

4

We believe in lasting design. That’s why our designers and craftsmen create simple and timeless objects that will never be thrown away. They are forever useful, adapting to all the moments making them special. When you use your Iittala you make it your own and you give it your story. When you gift Iittala you give something special to someone special.

We continuously work to perfect our objects as we have done for 130 years. What you get is as good as it can be in design, quality and materiality. We want Iittala objects to be something that remains relevant forever, passing through the generations, regardless of trends. Iittala is timeless design with a thought. We believe this kind of thought is needed more than ever in today’s life.

5

Every moment is special. When was the last time you had the perfect breakfast? One where you fill the table with your favourite morning food. Where you surround the table with some of the people you care for the most. And enjoy all the food and drink from the tableware you love. Was it last weekend? Or is it always next weekend? Shouldn’t it be every weekend? Living for tomorrow is fine, but don’t forget to cherish the moment you live in.

6

When you live in the present you can reveal every moment’s potential to be a special moment. The simple glass you drink your water from should feel right in your hand. The tools you use in your kitchen must be functional, even better if they cater to all your senses. The vase for flowers should please the eye even when the flowers are gone. Focusing on quality adds to your quality of life. Why be satisfied with anything less?

The home should reect you and be the place where you are most comfortable. Make it cosy, set the lighting just right to create a warm atmosphere. The objects that surround you are an important part of the

experience. You charge them with meanings and memories, and by looking at them you can relive the special moments gone by. Your home is the place where life happens.

7

Interior. Home isn’t just a place to come and sleep. It’s where life happens. The objects you surround yourself with are reflections of you. Make home a special place. 10–23

Eat & drink. Improvising with tableware is much more inspiring than sticking to strict rules. Combine different colours and patterns as suits your mood. The simplicity in form leaves room for your creativity, and allows endless combinations for everyday use as well as special occasions. 24–39 8

Myiittala. Myiittala is an international community of like-minded people who value timeless design. Our members share our ideas of honest, functional and everyday objects. 44–45

Cook. Cooking is not just about what you prepare. It is also about who you cook for and what you cook with. Our kitchen tools are much more than just functional. Of course, they do what you require of them, but they also please the eye. 40– 43

Something special. Nature gave Alvar Aalto the inspiration for a truly unique object. He designed the Aalto Collection in 1936 and the following year it was exhibited at the Paris World Expo. Since then the Aalto vase has become a classic that is the closest link most Finns have to the man who is undoubtedly Finland’s national architect and designer. The Aalto vase is also a gift from Aalto to all of us. Aalto created design objects that are present in our everyday life. He wanted to let the user decide how the objects are used. Whether you choose to use the Aalto vase for flowers, sweets or fruit, it will be a centre piece of your home’s interior. Giving the Aalto vase its life, is the breath of Finnish glassblowers at the Iittala factory. Every vase is unique and requires seven craftsmen, twelve work stages, 1100°C temperatures and thirty hours of work. When you give this special vase as a gift, you can be sure it will be appreciated.

Eat & drink. A meal is, of course, much more than just food. The tableware you use to enjoy what you eat and drink is an important part of the full experience. Iittala wants to provide you with the best in form and function. We understand the space in your kitchen is valuable, so we have designed tableware that adapts to any occasion.

24

The sets can be combined and our porcelain is also freezer and oven safe, which all add to the ways they can be used. Iittala has developed colours for both glass and porcelain for years to provide you with options to match your taste. In these ways our objects also adapt to all moments and stages in life.

Timeless perfection for everyone. Designer Kaj Franck aimed to strip away everything unnecessary from his designs. He wanted to create timeless essentials for everyday use. In 2011 we celebrate 100 years from his birth and can safely say that he achieved what he set out to do. In today’s world of downshifting and a desire to get back to the basics of life, Franck’s designs are more relevant than ever. His best known designs, the Teema tableware and Kartio glass series, are perfect realisations of his design philosophy. There’s nothing more you could take away and nothing you could add. The designs feel simple. They rely on three basic shapes – the circle, square and rectangle. The polished simplicity of both Teema tableware and Kartio glasses make them suit any occasion from everyday use to celebrations. The various colour options bring endless inspiration to the table. These are objects that feel like they have always existed and will always be used. As Franck intended.

Sneak peak at events. Every year Myiittala invites the community to enjoy inspiring events. In spring 2010, special “Plate Swap events gathered together a number of members in Helsinki. They were asked to donate their old plates with a story, and as a gift in return Iittala served a complimentary dinner. Members took this as a great opportunity to give their old plates a new life. Many wrote touching stories about the origin of the plates and the reasons why they wanted the dishes to get a new life in new surroundings. In September 2010, these plates became the core of the special Iittala tableware collection in a Finnish popup restaurant HEL YES! in London. Old Iittala products match with new ones and from the Iittala collection you can always choose your own, favourite combination.
