S H A P E D B Y H I S T O R Y. DR I V EN BY DEDIC AT ION From the very beginning in 1839, the Kähler workshop in the Danish town of NÌstved was an artistic playground for numerous renowned artists. Here they were given the liberty to let their imagination run free and experiment with techniques relating to ceramics and glazes.

Refurbished with great respect for history, the former workshop is the company’s new head office. The buildings also house a historic exhibition and a flagship store. History is clearly evident in the well-preserved machines, kilns and murals, which have been left in their original places – not only in several rooms in the building, but also on its external walls, where original ceramic friezes and decorations embellish the facades.

W E M AK E GR E AT IDE A S COME TO LIFE From the early beginnings in 1839, the historical Kähler workshop in the Danish town of Næstved was a haven for many of the greatest Danish creative personalities, and today we are still working side-byside with some of the most talented artists, ceramists and designers.

HANDICR AFT AND TECHNIQUE Each Hammershøi vase undergoes a long process before being gently packed and shipped off to end up in the home of a design lover somewhere in the world. Just as many other Kähler designs, the unique ceramic vases are all cast in hand-made moulds while the glazing is applied by hand.

SVEND HAMMERSHØI Celebrated artist, Svend Hammershøi, is known for his play with dimensions and his distinct design marker – the grooves. Created at the old Kähler workshop in the Danish town of Næstved at the beginning of the 20th century, his vases are known and loved all over the world.

HAMMERSHØI DESIGN HANS-CHRISTIAN BAUER
The distinctive Hammershøi furrows have already won over many design lovers in Scandinavia, and now the historic furrows have moved from the dinner table to the rest of the home. The Hammershøi range comprises four vases, which at one and the same time have a timeless and modern idiom. The four design vases have a sharp, clean and simple design which gives the vases a modern and stylish look. The vases have a delicate, little collar around the neck which, together with the furrows and the vases’ harmonious idiom, naturally elongates fresh flowers so that they become one with the ceramic. The history of the Kähler design vases is unique, which adds further authenticity and personality to the entire Hammershøi collection. The vases are directly inspired by world-renowned artist Svend Hammershøi’s distinctive vases, which he created at the old Kähler workshop in Næstved at the beginning of the 20th century. In the same collection, together with the designer behind the Hammershøi range, Hans-Christian Bauer, Kähler has created four elegant and evocative candle holders, all with an unpretentious, individual and stylish look in subdued Nordic colours. The four candle holders feature, like the vases, the distinctive Hammershøi furrows which bind the range together across colour, shape, material and function.

OM AGGIO DESIGN SCHOU NORDENTOFT & RECKWEG
The Omaggio series is a modern design classic. The iconic stripes are represented in countless Nordic homes and loved by design enthusiasts all over the world. However, not many people know that the iconic Omaggio vase is in fact an interpretation of the historical Kähler vases from the early and mid 20th century. The modern Omaggio vase was inspired by Tulle Emborg, one of the talented women painters in Kähler’s workshop in the 1930s and 1940s. The Omaggio vase continues some of the handicraft traditions that have been characterising Kähler for more than 175 years. As in the old Kähler workshop, each and every stripe on every single Omaggio vase has been hand-painted by talented women painters, and the Omaggio vases then go through multiple hand processes in connection with glazing, quality checking and fine-polishing. In this way, your Omaggio vase is not only a modern design icon, but also a piece of Nordic cultural history and a unique and powerful reflection of today, which has been reinterpreted and revived by the talented designer duo Stilleben.

Unico is a range of entirely unique, ceramic design products, which playfully and invitingly challenge our common perception of art versus utilitarian objects. The Unico range comprises two sculptural vases, a flowerpot, a bowl, an elegant dish and a decorative floor vase. The hallmark of the Unico range is a dense, colourful glaze. The story goes that at the end of the 1920s, Nils Kähler, the last Kähler to be artistic manager of the workshop, had fun after hours playing with the potter’s wheel and creating funny, quirky and inspiring money banks shaped like animals. It was only meant as a fun leisure time activity, but it caused trouble when Nils’ father, the legendary Herman A. Kähler, one day found a specimen in the garbage. What on earth was it doing there It was such a wonderful idea to create animal money banks, so now they just had to get on and make even more! That is how the animal money banks became some of the most popular products in Kähler’s more than 175 year history. It is this very story and the tradition of creating different and unexpected ceramic designs that form the cornerstone of the new range of animal money banks. With the decorative and stylish fabulous fish that come in both neutral and strong colours, the decorative object will again earn a prominent spot in the home. The unique design and the variation in colours and design will no doubt stir the imagination of anyone who sees these wonderful decorative fish. It may very well become this year’s design present for baptisms, birthdays and other joyful occasions.

OMBRIA DESIGN ANDERS ARHØJ
The Ombria series is a series with an authentic and subtle idiom. To emphasise the authenticity, the series is made in stoneware, which offers a natural rawness and structure. The pure, classic design is combined with raw, stone and mineral-inspired glazes. Ombria is inspired by coastlines, the deep ocean and the Nordic fauna and textures: wild bird’s eggs, raw cliffs, lyme grass, chalk cliffs and the bright stars. All glazes are applied by hand, and each piece of the series has its own unique expression. The glazes are developed as a universe of silky smooth and raw, matt surfaces – just as nature’s own: water, wood, stone and fire. The contrast between the matt and almost glossy random spots creates an exciting and fascinating expression. With his design of Ombria, Anders Arhøj demonstrates a special sense of what is simple and real. The individual element in the series can be used for several purposes. Thus, the plate also serves as a serving dish, the candle holder, which is designed for regular candles, is equally as decorative with tea lights. The vase is perfect for a small bouquet of spring flowers and sprays.

ANDERS ARHØJ Anders Arhøj is a qualified multimedia designer and works in his own design studio under the name, Studio Arhoj, in Copenhagen. Anders Arhøj’s design is characterised by the clear inspiration from Japanese ceramics and a colourful and characteristic glaze full of structure, which is very apparent in the ‘Unico’ and ‘Ombria’ ranges. Kähler’s more than 100-year long history of challenging the nature of ceramics in the work with surfaces and special glazes continues in
the creative cooperation with Anders Arhøj. The result is unique design products that playfully challenge our everyday conceptions of art versus functional objects. “My interest in ceramics is based on the possibility to reach out into the air and pull an idea into the physical world. In contrast to illustration and animation, you can create something tactile, sensual and tangible with ceramic, which can move into people’s homes and become a part of their life.”
