MONTANA IN NORWAY
F
rom mountains and waterfalls by Trollstigen, the Trolls' Path, to a lake view at the boathouse in Aure and on to a modernised textile factory in Oslo - this is how far we travel in this magazine, Montana Living vol. 5. Together with the Norwegian journalist and blogger Helle Tjaberg, we have been given the opportunity to experience the diversity in the beauty, architecture and design of Norway. We have invited three very different Norwegians to create their very own Montana compositions. You can see the results here in the magazine, where you can also read about when we met the three: The BASE jumper Tom Erik Heimen, the architects at TYIN Tegnestue, Yashar Hanstad and Andreas G. Gjertsen, and the designer Ingunn Birkeland. I hope that you will be as inspired as we have been. Enjoy your time with the magazine! Joakim Lassen

BIRDMAN AS ONE OF NORWAY'S - AND THE WORLD'S - MOST EXPERIENCED BASE JUMPERS, TOM ERIK HEIMEN IS USED TO DIFFERENT REACTIONS FROM HIS SURROUNDINGS. SOME THINK THAT HIS SPORT IS NOTHING BUT MADNESS, OTHERS THINK HE IS A SUPERMAN. - You have to be proud of what you do. I approach my sport with the highest pos足 sible degree of safety, and I don't feel a need to defend what I do. The most important part, for me, is that I can look my family in the eyes when I come home, knowing that I have not taken any risks.

F
or Tom Erik, BASE jumping is first and foremost about experiencing nature.
- It is an incredibly beautiful way to experience the mountains, and it is also an incredibly beautiful way to descend. The happiness I feel while gliding down along the mountainside cannot be described. But the greatest happiness is being in nature, getting out and about and using your body. For me it is exercise, and I never work out indoors if I can avoid it. The Trollstigen area is a fantastic starting point for many excursions.
A WINDY EXPERIENCE Trollstigen is an old mountain pass in the north-western part of Norway, opened as a tourist route in 1936. The stretch with its eleven bends is an incredible experience as the road winds its way down the mountain side in the dramatic Norwegian nature. The view is spectacular. Today the area is one of Norway's most visited tourist attractions. In 2012 the Trollstig Plateau was redefined and renewed by Reiulf Ramstad Architects, and buildings, paths and observation decks now make up an architectural whole. Tom Erik
had his first encounter with Trollstigen as a ten-year-old somewhere in the mid 80's. He remembers the experience as being windy. That time he was sitting at the front of a bus that carried family members visiting from the USA up the mountain. These days he likes to tag along with tourist buses up through the valley. He is happy that the plateau has now been remade.
IN HARMONY WITH NATURE - For me it is important to be proud of nature and your surroundings. Before the new constructions and paths were put in place there was an old hovel surrounded by souvenir shops, but this has been cleaned up now. There has been criticism regarding the changes to the plateau, and some mean that it is interfering with nature, but before this people would walk anywhere and everywhere, and I think that meant greater stress for nature. Now the tourists are directed onto paths, and the nature is left more at peace. New constructions will always be very visible in nature, but in just a few years the buildings will fit in better with their surroundings. The most important part is still to open your eyes, enjoy nature, and let all the sensory inputs be taken in. One of the mountain tops by Trollstigen from which Tom Erik launches himself in his wingsuit is called Bispen, and on the flight down he almost touches the tourists that are standing in one of the road's bends. - I have contributed to the development of the sport myself. First we jumped straight down, then we jumped out and flew away from the mountain, and today we fly 足closer to the mountain again. It is perhaps not
strange that people are impressed with what we do, but we are neither heroes or supermen. We are just ordinary people who know our sport. It is about skill, camaraderie and passion. Tom Erik produced his first wingsuit together with a friend, using a cheap raincoat that they burnt holes in with cigarettes to create lift. Today he flies in custom-made suits that cost several thousand NOK. He has an ordinary job for the weekdays, but he does spend a lot of time travelling and lecturing, and he is often busy with recording films, both advertisement material and pieces about himself. It is important to him to contribute to creating a positive attitude to BASE jumping.
A SERIOUS PASSION - I have an enormous respect for those people that have a passion and put their entire being into what they do. We are resourceful and serious people, and many of us have families. The thing we have in common is the joy that comes from being active, being in nature, and feeling the air rush towards our faces. The mountain means freedom for Tom Erik, but the mountain can also be dangerous. He has lost several friends in accidents, and he was involved in a serious accident himself a few years ago. Does he think about death? - Of course I do, and I have absolutely no death wish. I don't want to go until many years from now. I do not feel as great a need to challenge myself these days, and I don't take risks. I would like to live up here for many years, and I want to bring my children into nature for good moments together with them. That is something wo rth living for. And if his children also want to BASE jump? - As a father my job is to guide my children, not to mislead them. The important part is what they want to do and not what I think they should do.

CLASSIC UPDATE
1112
DESIGN The basis is simple and classic - the iconic and popular module 1112 from Montana, which for many people is the first encounter with the Montana universe. The module work perfectly alone on a wall, and when put together in a group they turn into one of the most functional and important pieces of furniture in a home. What happens then, if we supplement this with some "wild" colours? When we dare to move away from the plain and white, and begin to play with fun and interesting colour combinations? In this way the practical and stylish modules are suddenly given an entirely new eye-catching role - as a functional and beautiful sculpture in the room, with a strong personal touch.

C LOURS DESIGN The present trend is that we want to be personal, innovative and creative when we de足corate our homes. An important part of this is the choice of colours, and colours are great for changing or challenging the interior design of a room. Colours can be cold or warm, active or passive - but they are never indifferent. In the current interior design trends, colours should work in harmony - but preferably in a little lopsided and unexpected manner. In the next few pages you can let yourself be inspired to new and daring choices of colour. You must dare to choose colour combinations that are somewhat unexpected and play with them in the room. But how do you begin? Well, why not simply start with your favourite colour? You may like to combine both warm and cold nuances to create a balanced appearance. A neutral colour is not necessarily only brown, beige, black, grey, cream or white - the new neutral colours are dusty, muted pastels such as old rose, lilac violet, light blue or mint green. When you choose an accent colour such as orange or yellow as a contrast to a subdued, neutral colour, you get a different and very vivid expression. The Montana colour palette consists of 49 colours and surfaces that can be combined indefinitely. With them there is no reason to play it on safe choices.

HAPPY FURNITURE Functional design in decorative, asymmetrical forms, which inspires and spreads joy at home.
DESIGN
MEMPHIS STYLE A new and creative approach to design that was the main idea behind the Memphis Group, a circle of Italian architects and designers led by Ettore Sottsass that was established in 1981. The group got their inspiration from both Art Deco and Pop Art, kitsch and futurism, and it was a revolt against the then current trend of conventional and entirely colourless furniture and interior design.
34
The Memphis style is easy to recognise, buoyant, naive and unique - and it is perhaps foremost known from its bright colours that are combined in unusual ways, preferably a bit edgy and askew. The group dissolved in 1988 and Ettore Sottsass said himself that the Memphis style was a bit like strong pharmaceuticals - easy to overdose on.
But even though the group does not exist itself any more, we are constantly affected by its vivid and eccentric personality. In the Montana colour universe you will find all the bright, clear colours that challenge the conventional and create a personal and individual design. FEAST AND FISH SOUP YASHAR HANSTAD AND ANDREAS GRØNTVEDT GJERTSEN FROM TYIN TEGNESTUE ARCHITECTS HAD A CLEAR IDEA BEHIND THE MONTANA MODULE THEY WOULD PUT TOGETHER.

- We wanted to try to show the diversity in Montana, both in regards to shape as well as colour. We worked with a colour scale we thought fits well with the boathouse, from the very bright at one end of the scale to the dark blue at the other. The boathouse is a place where we gather for special occasions with our family, with good food and drink, and for us the module should support this function in the house.
THE BOATHOUSE AT AURE

D
Down by the water's edge, where weather and wind can be harsh, there is a building that at first sight does not seem to differ significantly from the traditional boathouses, or "nausts" as they are called locally, found all the way up along Norway's long coast. But at a closer look you can see the building's unique qualities, ones that have impressed and inspired people from all over the world, and helped establish TYIN Tegnestue Architects as a name when the construction was completed in 2011.
CHANGE TO PRESERVE The original wish was to preserve the over 100 years old and worn boathouse, lying close to a country home owned by the in-laws of Yashar Hanstad, who together with Andreas Grøntvedt Gjertsen run TYIN Tegnestue Architects. It did, however, turn out to be necessary to tear the building down entirely and then rebuild it again from scratch, and it was not possible to get around adding new materials. Because of this, a decision was made to design a new boathouse, at the same time as using as much as possible of the old, both physically as in materials, but also the shape of the house, the position in
54
the terrain, the size and the direction. Yashar designed the boathouse together with his girlfriend, Marianne Sørstrøm. Externally it is clad with Kebony, an environmentally friendly house cladding developed in Norway and produced using sustainable wood, which with time gets a silver-grey patina. The inside walls are made from the old boathouse woodwork. The windows, that go all the way from the floor to the roof ridge on one side, are also made from old windows found on site. The opposite side consists of five tilting doors, internally clad with rough canvas, softening the light and creating a beautiful effect when darkness falls. On the outside these doors are clad with the remains from an old iron mill.
A NECESSITY TO THINK SUSTAINABLY Yashar and Andreas say that they never had it as an explicit goal to design sustainable projects. For them it is nothing more than a necessity - when you work in places that are hard to get to you need to first and foremost use materials that can be found locally, and involve the local population in the works, regardless if the project is in Aure or Thailand.
year in Thailand where they designed a dormitory for an orphanage in Noh Bo. There they were also working with local labour and local materials. And perhaps it is here we find the key to understanding the approach TYIN Tegnestue Architects have to architecture. They participate in the practical labour on the work site, and they are eager to learn as well as teach. Yashar lived in the boathouse for a few months while it was being constructed. - We have a true curiosity, but it is also important to us to have a good grip on things, and I believe that our precision adds a certain value to our work. We ask many questions, and we are eager to do things pro perly, says Andreas.
GLOBAL LEARNING
- We have worked a lot in places where the choices are limited, and then you have to think in a simplified manner. Sustainability becomes a necessity when you work with a small budget, says Andreas.
In addition to the project in Thailand, the architectural firm has carried out an array of global projects in, for example, Uganda, Indonesia and Burma. They have also worked in more commercial projects, such as doing a tax-free department of the Trondheim airport, and modern additions to private residences. They arrange workshops for people studying in various countries, and they let themselves be inspired by local methods and traditions. TYIN have received several recognitions, among others the European Prize for Architecture in 2012.
NATURAL CURIOSITY
THE FUTURE
The boathouse was built during a period where Andreas and Yashar were just graduated from NTNU in Trondheim and still unsure which direction they would take. TYIN Tegnestue Architects was established in 2008, while they were still studying architecture at NTNU in Trondheim. They spent a
- Interest from media began seriously after the construction of the boathouse. We have managed to reach a certain status, and now it is important for us to find out how we use it the best way, but we don't feel the need to take on more co-workers. We complement each other, respect each other, and share everything 50/50. What I know, Andreas doesn't - and vice versa. At times tensions run high, but professional opposition makes you evolve as a person. We take our work seriously, and we're proud of doing so, says Yashar.

CREATIVE PASSION THE DESIGNER INGUNN BIRKELAND LOVES TO PROVOKE, AND THINKS THAT REPETITION IS EXCITING. WHEN SHE GETS UP IN THE MORNING IT IS FIRST AND FOREMOST TO CREATE SOMETHING. Fashion designer. Shoe designer. Jewellery designer. Artist. It is not easy to put Ingunn Birkeland in a creative box, but this is also the last thing she would want. She can at most accept being called an all-round artist - but sees herself as a designer that loves to explore and mix forms of expression.
THE OLD TEXTILE FACTORY IN OSLO
77
W
hen she graduated from the National School of Craft and Art Industry in 2005, her major in clothing and fashion design, she had no thoughts of working for anybody else but herself.
TAILORED QUALITY
- I want to test my own ideas and grow with them, and this would be difficult if I were working with others. I was lucky to be in the last class who graduated before the school was merged with the Academy of Arts in Oslo. I have the impression that the new master's program is far more theoretical, and I have always wanted to spend most of my time creating. When I was a child I had a table next to my homework area where I made jewellery.
- It's like sculpting with colours. I weave from the back of the workpiece and never quite know how it ends up before I turn it around. Colours are an important part of my life, and I get an enormous amount of energy from the colours. Mint green is my white, it's my basic colour even if I also use white. I work especially with the contrast between red, mint green and lime green, these are colours that almost always recur. For me it will always be interesting when you repeat elements.
THE ART OF WEAVING Weaving has become Ingunn's trademark, a time-consuming and precise method that reflects in both her designing of clothes and shoes as well as in her artwork. She began working with the method about eight years ago, and at the time it was only with black
ribbons for minor projects such as neckties and belts. As time passed she developed the method with more colours and began to make larger pieces.
Her signature colours are also repeated in the Montana modules that she is photographed with, and that have been created as a tribute to weaving and her exceptional feeling for colour. All the things Ingunn designs are either produced by herself or she has them produced in limited numbers, such as with her shoes that are made on order at a small factory in Alicante, Spain.
THE CREATIVE SOUL - Things should take time. I want to produce quality before quantity. My experience is that people are willing to wait for something if they really want it and it's of good quality. Recently, six of Ingunn's creations - three skirts, one top and two pairs of shoes - were
78
bought by the Norwegian National Museum, and this she considers a great honour as well as a recognition of the way she works. - When I get up in the morning it's first and foremost to create something. I have always been aware that you have to put aside time to do what you like, and find the willpower to carry things through - and this is important in an industry where you might have to work a lot and put up with the decisions of others. Some might call me the eternal, naive optimist, but I definitely believe that most things are possible if you have the willpower. It is important to have ideas, but you also need the patience and the desire to carry them through.
ARTISTIC FRAMEWORK We have photographed Ingunn Birkeland in the gallery section of the cultural centre on Nedregate 5-7. The centre is situated at the bottom of Grünerløkka, by the Akerselva river, and it has received the Oslo municipality price for good city architecture. The building from the 1890's used to be a textile factory, but today it is only the outer wall of the original building that remains. The architecture company Space Group stands behind the complete renovation. Internally the building has been entirely renovated and rebuilt to fit the modern workday, but a conscious choice of materials, exciting contrasts and maintaining industrial elements such as brick and the beautiful chimney brings history into the present. This way of recycling and re-interpreting an existing construction, which otherwise would be threatened by demolition, is a sustainable approach with changing to preserve. On the next pages you can see the Montana modules photographed in the parts of the building that today is home to Signal Media House, rooms for various creative ends with emphasis on film.
