Verner Panton Danish designer (1926 -1998)

Among the giants of Danish design, Verner Panton established a unique reputation for his exuberant originality and tireless experimentation. Panton created lamps, furniture and textiles – and was also a sought-after interior designer. Although he was at the forefront of mid-century Danish Modern, Panton’s contribution was anything but mainstream. He enthusiastically embraced new materials, he splashed with a bold colour palette, and he playfully imbued many of his sculptural creations with a strong graphical expression – without ever compromising on quality or workmanship. Panton’s iconic designs have emerged as contemporary design classics – as strikingly inventive now as they were 50 years ago. Panton’s interior installations have attained legendary status. The most famous examples are the ‘Visiona’ ship installations for the Cologne Furniture Fair (1968 and 1970), the Spiegel publishing headquarters in Hamburg (1969) and the Varna restaurant in Aarhus (1971). Verner Panton in his own words: “The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination. Most people spend their lives living in dreary, grey-beige conformity, mortally afraid of using colours. By experimenting with lighting, colours, textiles and furniture and utilizing the latest technologies, I try to show new ways, to encourage people to use their imagination and make their surroundings more exciting”.

Marianne Panton (Verner Panton’s wife): “For 35 years, I had the pleasure of taking part in the world famous design work by my husband Verner Panton. Accordingly, it is a wonderful experience for me now to see how popular the Verpan products have become and just how timeless his designs have turned out to be. Of course I’m very proud that there is still so much interest in my husband’s design and his lifework. It would have made Verner happy, and it certainly makes me happy. Verner had very clear attitudes regarding his work and regarding shape, colour and function. At the same time he made conscious and brave use of different materials. Also in a way and a combination which often led to his contemporaries disparaging the “timelessness” of his design. The great interest in his design today proves the opposite”.

Verpan

Founded in 2003

Verpan is - much like Verner Panton - a product of the Danish design tradition, which have put Denmark on the world map for functional, modern and unique design. In close collaboration with the Panton estate - especially widow Marianne Panton - Verpan has acquired the production and sales rights to a significant part of Verner Panton’s designs. In 2003 the production of lighting was initiated and in 2010 a furniture range was added. A continuous process of picking and choosing products from the vast treasure chest of Panton’s work, will bring many more items to life again. All of the Verpan products stand out as some of the most elegant and memorable of Verner Panton’s designs. Products that create life, sound, movement, colour and light - design that brings value into the visual world around us.

Series 430 chair Verner Panton’s goal was to design a practical dining chair that was just as comfortable as a lounge chair. That is why Series 430 has a wide, enveloping back and a well-padded seat with elastic webbing. This allows it to better adjust to the weight of the body and provides a relaxing seating position.

System 123 System 1-2-3 is a great example of the innovative and groundbreaking thinking of Verner Panton. When the System 123 was first launched back in 1973 one critic wrote “It will be a milestone in future furniture design… We have never before seen a chair designed and build like this series”. The original commission was to design a furniture programme that combined a series of different functions with the basic requirement of good sitting comfort. The chairs should also have a simple and natural design, so they could fit into any environment as a functional element. It took Verner Panton three years to develop the series, and the result was a unique chair concept where Panton worked systematically with design and function based on a defined theme, which he described as follows: “I wanted to design furniture that grows up out of the floor – to turn the furniture into something organic and never with four legs.”

Verner Panton This moderns day version, although 100% true to the original visual design, has been upgraded to contract use with moulded foam inside and lockable swivel base.

System 123 dining

As far as Panton was concerned, a chair should be so comfortable that you could sit comfortably on it both during and after dinner. Here you can automatically change the sitting position when you have finished dinner and assume a more relaxed position. His solution was to split the back into two zones by adding a small fold – Which enables the back to be upright or to recline as required.

Cloverleaf Sofa endless possibilities

Outstanding design doesn’t have to be a puzzle. Especially when all of the pieces fit so beautifully together. Take Verner Panton’s Cloverleaf Sofa, for example. Designed in 1969 for the legendary Visiona 2 exhibition in Cologne, Cloverleaf playfully walks the line between sensuous seating sculpture and modular pragmatism. How will you let Cloverleaf wind its way into your space?

Cloverleaf Sofa bringing people closer

Verner Panton was a master of the fluid, futuristic style of 1960’s design which introduced the Pop aesthetic to furniture and interiors. He designed the cloverleaf sofa in 1969 for the Visiona exhibition as a spectacular eyecatcher and yet a comfortable place to rest and talk - he ended up creating an iconic piece that truly functions as a social piece bringing people closer to each other.

Cloverleaf Sofa with charging station

Designed by Verner Panton in 1969 Verner Panton designed the Cloverleaf sofa for the Visiona exhibition as a spectacular eyecatcher and yet a comfortable place to rest and talk. Cloverleaf was conceived as a sprig of clover, meandering and unfolding as it gets longer. In the middle, the seat is divided by a backrest, which wriggles out of the seat. As well as providing the necessary back support, it also shields you from people sitting on the other side. This one-of-a-kind sofa is one of Verner Panton’s masterpieces. The fact that Cloverleaf comprises a left, a right and two middle section, means it can be combined in a myriad of options. The Cloverleaf with charging station comes with one electrical unit per element. You have endless possibilities with the Cloverleaf and you can have one unit per element no matter how you configure your sofa.

WELLE, LOW LOUNGE SEATING (1969) Verner Panton

Welle

low lounge furniture To call Verner Panton’s Welle series “lounge furniture” is almost an understatement. Like so much else of Panton’s extensive oeuvre, these wildly imaginative organic forms land like a colourful splash in the sleepy world of traditional contract furniture – and leave us anything but indifferent. Panton first displayed the Welle series at the forward-thinking Visiona exhibition back in 1970 alongside the Cloverleaf sofa and other visionary Panton works that have long since entered the cannon of contemporary design. Why Welle never went into series production remains something of a mystery. Maybe the cold foam technology of the day wasn’t ready for such massive forms. Perhaps Welle got lost in the visual orgy that was Visiona, next to so many other soon-to-be Panton classics. It could also be that the design itself was simply ahead of its time. At any rate, VERPAN jumped at the chance when the Panton estate agreed that the time for Welle was finally here in 2014. The WELLE units truely are some of the most organic forms Panton ever created for the lounge.

CLOVERLEAF IN- AND OUTDOOR, SOFA (1969) Verner Panton

IN- AND OUTDOOR

Cloverleaf

In & Outdoor Sofa In 1970 Verner Panton launched a sofa, whose unique idiom, even 46 years later, is a total eye-catcher. That idiom attracts attention, amazes and fascinates to such a degree that the demand for more versions has resulted in the production of a brand new one. This version in hardwearing polyethylene (PE) can be used both outdoors and in. So Verpan have christened it ‘CLOVERLEAF In-and-Outdoor’. We designed this version because the qualities and infinite seating options featured in the upholstered version of CLOVERLEAF are also desirable on patios, and in reception areas, waiting rooms etc. That is why Verpan, for quite some time, have been working together with Verner’s widow, Marianne Panton on a model that can withstand wind and weather, and function in an environment, in which hygiene is top priority. Carefully selected materials With the guidance and assistance of technicians and engineers, Verpan have manufactured a model in polyethylene. Not only can its UV-resistant surface withstand sun, wind and the changing seasons, it also meets the professional cleaning requirements of the various sectors of the healthcare system. Its tough surface also makes CLOVERLEAF an ideal choice for the hospitality industry or a busy front office. CLOVERLEAF is made from 100% recyclable material and is engraved with Verner Panton’s signature and the Verpan logo. Weather, wind and theft The polyethylene version of CLOVERLEAF has various ‘towers’ under its rock-hard shell to make it extra solid. If you fill it with water or bolt it to the ground, it becomes so heavy and solid that, as well as withstanding wind and weather, if you position it strategically in relation to doors and windows, it can also serve as an alternative form of anti-theft protection. If CLOVERLEAF is subject to graffiti, the material can also withstand high-pressure cleaning. In other words, the CLOVERLEAF meets all requirements for exteriors, as well as interiors where hygiene and wear & tear are major factors: for example hospitals, education facilities, pool areas and restaurants. It also makes an attractive and practical feature in front of a company head office. A one-of-a-kind item of furniture CLOVERLEAF was conceived as a sprig of clover, meandering and unfolding as it gets longer. In the middle, the seat is divided by a backrest, which wriggles out of the seat. As well as providing the necessary back support, it also shields you from people sitting on the other side. This one-of-a-kind sofa is one of Panton’s masterpieces, which now can be put to outdoor use. The fact that CLOVERLEAF comprises a left, a right and two middle section, means it can be combined in a myriad of options.

Illumesa light table

Interpreting “Table Lamp” quite literally, the Illumesa ingeniously adds light to a table. A single light bulb provides a diffused, soft glow through the opaque white acrylic parts. This combination of pleasantly practical light and geometric simplicity is another playful example of Verner Panton’s investigations into form, materials and function. The fun character of the lamp makes Illumesa an interesting accessory that also happens to provide functional table space. Suitable for use indoors as well as outdoor.

Panto Pop chair

Designed by Verner Panton and launched in 1969, the Panto Pop stackable chair is an iconic design piece. Recently Verpan under license updated the Panto Pop by adding UV stabilizers to the thermoplastic mix producing a more practical version for outdoor use. The addition of the drainage hole at the base of the seat now allows water to escape more freely improving both maintenance and durability. One of Verpan’s most recognizable pieces, the Panto Pop is stackable and available in white and red, adding a pop of colour and fun to any environment. Suitable for use indoors as well as outdoor.

Panton Move Table

Verner Panton’s own studio table More than 40 years ago Verner Panton was struggling with some of the same issues that we have today; how to make a table both simple, sturdy and flexible. Panton wanted the quintessential table – a top and four legs, one in each corner – but he also wanted it to be easy to knockdown and he wanted it to be flexible once assembled. The idea for the Move table came to Panton when he had his own studio in Basel. At the time Verner Panton’s studio was quite large and very busy and there was no room for an extra table in Panton’s own office. To solve the problem he just put beautiful lockable castors on all four legs of his desk, and the Move table was born. This way, whenever visitors came to see him, Panton would simply Move the table to the center of the room and everyone could stand around the table and see what Panton wanted to show them. The Move table offers flexibility to any dining, office or meeting setting, or wherever you want to use the Panton Move table.

Designing a table without a pedestal meant that the legs should be so slim and elegant that you hardly noticed them. In Series 430 they are just that. It should also be so light that you could move it as required to accommodate different uses: everything from a gathering point in the dining room to a card table in the living room or an extra working surface in the kitchen. Its lightness, slender legs and obvious frame really make Series 430 stand out. The table is a perfect match for the collection’s own lightweight Series 430 chairs or for the more distinctive System 123 dining chairs.

mobile storage Barboy is a mobile storage unit made from moulded wood and comprising four cylindrical parts. These cylindrical parts swing out to provide three differently sized storage compartments + a convenient table top and offer full 360Ëšaccess. Verner Panton designed Barboy in 1963 after moving from Denmark to France and then Switzerland. During this period, Panton was particularly interested in designing furniture that allowed greater flexibility in interior design, leading him to often mount his designs on wheels.

85

BARBOY, STORAGE (1963) Verner Panton

ACCESSORIES

Barboy

The Barboy is a typical example of Panton’s furniture. Designed in a sensuous idiom, in which the designer combines a matt surface with a shiny chrome handle and wheels, investing the piece with an elegant contrast. Verpan’s decision to celebrate the Danish designer with a new shade of blue should be regarded as a tribute to his huge knowledge of, and flair for, colours in both interiors and designs. Colours were so important to Panton that he declared – unashamedly – that colours were more important than shape.

The Mirror Sculpture decorations were created by Panton for his own home, and produced only in a limited quantity in the 1960s. The few available vintage examples of this playful pyramidal artwork fetch handsome prices in exclusive auctions. Verpan has now officially launched the Mirror Sculptures and thus lets design aficionados around the world join in the creative process of arranging the three quadrants in the combination of their choice. Moreover this modern version is manufactured in a mirrored acrylic ensuring that it can be used for contract as well as retail and on the ceiling as well as the walls.
