Eight Local Pastors Bring In The New Year In Night Watch Service
Pastor Loreen Pettaway
Attendees at Watch Night Service
Bishops & Pastors receiving Anointed Cloth from Bishop M. Holt By Interfaith Gazette Staff It is known that Watch Night Service has its historical roots tied to slavery in 1862. The slaves gathered in homes at houses of worship and in groups to pray, sing, and watch for any news that would come that they were free and would be able to live FREE for the rest of their lives. However, it did not come easy. The night, December 31st, before the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, served as what was known as FREEDOM EVE NIGHT. The next day the slaves rejoiced for their new experiences that had come. Well, the irony in this experience continues to serve in the African American

churches today, not because of slavery in its general use of the word but in the sense of gathering to praise and worship God for having kept, provided for, and blessed them during the year. This annual ritual is preferably shared in AA churches and is unknown as to whether or not churches of ethnicities practice this service. This year’s Watch Night Service wasn’t any different than it has been since 1862. Maybe the difference was that 8 Pastors and other Local Clergy gathered in one church to celebrate this Freedom to worship God. Bethesda Christian Center was the site where these Pastors co.03. that she was absent during the loss of several family members that had utilized the services at the Funeral Home. To some she was identified as a just a gentle, classy, great lady who served this community many years, with an extensive background in serving people for many years even before she moved to the City of Toledo from Detroit, Mi. She was a lifelong Episcopalian member at St. Matthew and St. Joseph churches in Detroit, Mi. She matriculated in many areas of the
church and became a member at All Saints Episcopal Church in Toledo. Because she had a mind to serve, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and worked for years as a Social Worker for Wayne County Department of Social Services and Oakland County Department of Social Services, served as a Consultant for two Nursing Homes in the Detroit area, as well as The Episcopal Senior Center in Detroit. Mrs. Riggs has always displayed a genuine desire to serve the poor and those in need
There has not been many families, churches, communities, or individuals in the City of Toledo whose lives were not touched by the love and service of one Sheryl Anderson (Green) Riggs of the Dale-Riggs Funeral Home on Nebraska and City Park Avenues in the Central city. December 24, 2019 came as a shock to many who had no idea of the illness that Mrs. Riggs was experiencing, other than to notice
of special services, which encouraged her to enroll in Mortuary Science at Wayne State University in Detroit, Mi., where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree. She worked in the areas of grief and bereavement where she was encouraged to bring her services to the Toledo community. After being the first to establish an aftercare program at the Funeral Home, she became the Owner and Operator of Riggs Funeral Home in Detroit, Mi. and moved to Toledo becoming See RIGGS, on page 5

Riggs from page 4 the Manager and Managing Director of Dale-Riggs Funeral Home in 1992. Because she was determined to provide exemplary services to the families in the Toledo area, she arranged and directed all aspects of the business until becoming ill. Toledoeans gathered at the Warren A.M.E. church on Saturday, December 28 th to say their final goodbyes to Mrs. Riggs, a friend, Mentor, Role Model, and Servant as described by many who were in attendance. The service was a celebration of her life with musical selections by the Toledo Interfaith Mass Choir, Bro. Gregory Meredith, who sang her favorite song, and Rev. Johnny Love, who stated that because he was her personal Musician, he never took a vacation, meaning that when she called he responded. Churches were represented by their Pastors who actively participated, i.e. Rev. Willie Perryman, Rev. Robert Lyons, Pastor Gerald Fletcher, Pastor Floyd Smith, Pastor Charles Jones, Pastor Cedric Brock, Pastor Charles McBee, Dr. John E. Roberts, and Nathaniel Williams from the Dale Riggs Family. Bro.
Dale - Riggs Partnership with J. Frank Troy Senior Center Larry Jones provided the Acknowledgements and Obituary, and Dr. Otis Gordon of Warren A.M.E. Church gave the Eulogy. Many Pastors and Officials of several churches were in attendance to pay homage to this great servant. Dr. Gordon brought humor to knowing her, as he spoke about the Classic automobile that he got the opportunity to drive at a service that was owned by Mrs. Riggs. Others shared their thoughts about her stating that she was meek but not weak, an angel of the Lord. Mrs. Riggs was truly committed to community. She maintained active memberships with Delta Sigma Theta sorority, Inc., Links, Girlfriends, Top Ladies of Distinction, Northwest Ohio Funeral Directors Association where she served as past President, Ohio Funeral Directors Association, and National Funeral Directors Association. Additionally, she was credentialed by Certified Funeral Service Professionals (CFSP), and Certified Preplanning (CP). Mrs. Riggs was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents. Teams Up to Donate Socks!
Bethesda Christian Center Sanctuary By Interfaith Gazette Staff The winter months are hard for a lot of reasons for many people and certainly for those who have no basic amenities to live comfortably. It was the hearts and minds of two giving companies, individuals, and a church, who thought it “supportive and decent” to give socks to those who are homeless and without basic necessities

(In the Pavilion Plaza), their mission remains steadfast to provide for those in need, as has been part of their service to the community for the 24 years that they have existed.
Bishop Marjorie Holt, Senior Servant at Bethesda Christian Center, approached the Partners in the Plaza who said “YES “ we will help and provided several packs of socks that included children and adult sizes. Those partners who gave willingly and without hesitation, were Knight Industries and City Glass. The donation was given to the Family House Shelter

The Shelter offers a variety of services and programs that are family centered for the purpose of meeting the need of emergency shelter for children and parents. If in need of services and shelter for your family, you may call them at 419.242.5505. We pray for continued support for this great resource for our families in the Toledo area!

Rev. Jesse Jackson Post Bonds on Christmas Day On Christmas Day, Rev. Jackson Jackson Sr. posted the bonds of a handful of inmates at Cook County Jail in Chicago so they could spend the holiday with loved ones. After Jackson paid the bonds, cameras captured him walking arm-inarm with the released men, ABC News reports. “This is just a good feeling. It brings a warmness to my heart,” released detainee Aaron Kinzer told ABC News. His mom, Eileen Thomas Kinzer, agreed, saying, “It’s a blessing because this would’ve been his first Christmas locked up—ever,” she told reporters. Because a reverend is always gonna bring a word, Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition brought a worship service to the jail, with Rev. Marshall Hatch of New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church delivering a Christmas message. Hatch likened the inmates to baby Jesus, saying they were like the baby “wrapped in swaddling clothes, meaning literally the babe is wrapped in rags, which means it does not matter
what you have on. The only thing that matters is what’s on the inside,” he preached. This isn’t the first time Jackson has posted bonds for folks sitting in Cook County Jail. Earlier this month, he did the same for Bernard Kersh, the 29-year-old black man who was slammed to the ground by Chicago police officers on Thanksgiving. And last year, Jackson also posted bonds for three Cook County detainees, including Khadija Campbell, a pregnant woman whose crime was stealing a $14 bottle of gin, according to the Chicago Crusader. Economics is why folks can’t make bond, and Jackson, a longtime advocate for social and racial justice, is determined to shed light on this travesty. “They spend more time in jail waiting for trial than the actual sentences,” he said. But thanks to Jackson, some folks will spend the Christmas season with their family, which may, in fact, be the best gift.

hen cold weather hits, it’s natural to seek comfort in a variety of forms: warm blankets, layers of sweaters and delicious, hearty meals. Winter is the perfect season for spending time indoors honing cooking skills to take your culinary creations to the next level.
Simple Recipes for Shorter Days
With less daylight hours during the winter, many people tend to get sleepy earlier. Quick weeknight dinner recipes are usually ideal, especially when they take only 30 minutes or so to prepare. Easy dishes are perfect for those nights when you want something savory and delicious, but you also want to get into pajamas and onto the nearest couch as soon as possible. Few things are better than a warm bowl full of flavor like this taste-tempting curry recipe bursting with caramelized onion and roasted garlic notes.
Chickpea, Spinach and Coconut Curry
Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 12 minutes Servings: 6 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon ginger, freshly grated 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 large yellow onion, chopped 1 tablespoon turmeric 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper, plus additional, to taste 1 can (29 ounces) chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 jar (24 ounces) FarmToFork Caramelized Onion & Roasted Garlic Sauce 1 can (15 ounces) light coconut milk 4 cups baby spinach 1/2 cup non-fat plain Greek yogurt, stirred 1/2 cup cilantro, coarsely chopped 2 naan flatbreads, toasted and sliced In large skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil, ginger, garlic, onions, turmeric, salt and 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper. Cook 6-8 minutes, or until onions begin to brown, stirring frequently. Add chickpeas, sauce and coconut milk; cook 3-4 minutes, or until heated through. Add spinach; cover with lid. Simmer 3-4 minutes, or until spinach is wilted. Mix well. Spoon mixture into six serving bowls and top each with spoonful of yogurt, pinch of cilantro and additional crushed red pepper, to taste. Serve with flatbread slices.

The Perks of Passive Cooking
Wintry weekends call for warming meals that bring an extra sensation of coziness through the wafting aroma of slow-cooked dishes. Wintertime is the perfect season to break out your slow cooker or put your stove on low heat and let fragrant dishes such as Savory Harissa-Roasted Chicken and Vegetables simmer slowly and fill your home with enticing smells.

Opt for Seasonal Produce
While the days of peaches and watermelons may be over, dropping temperatures bring a slew of seasonal produce made for cool-weather cooking. Think winter squash, apples, root vegetables and cauliflower. Try using a seasonal food guide to learn what produce is in season in any state at any time of the year. Cooking with seasonal produce helps ensure your food is in peak form at its most nutritional and flavorful state.
Find Comfort in Your Favorite Foods

When craving warm and filling meals during winter, a quality, jarred pasta sauce like FarmToFork can add simple goodness to hearty dishes like Gnocchi with Hearty Mushroom Bolognese. During the season of giving, comfort and warmth can also be found in doing good for others, which is why FarmToFork supports Big Green, a national nonprofit organization that partners with low-income schools around the country to bring garden-based learning and food literacy curriculums to children.
