Being Blessed By Blessed Hands Beauty Bar!

Simone Marsenburg, Owner with Blessed Hands Stylists By Interfaith Gazette Staff Well, the time came that many could not wait to hear of getting out of their homes back into their favorite Salon and Barber Shop. The doors opened, the Stylists walked in, the lights went on and the camera action begun. It’s the day y’all, we made it finally and all can witnessed this hour, the sentiments of Owner of BLESSED HANDS BEAUTY BAR SALON on Holland Sylvania Rd. What a day to remember, but even more than that, what a day to walk in with a new spirit, new services, new faces, and style to go along with every tall order. The Stylists were ready and so were the services that they vowed to deliver in the Day of the NEW NORMAL. Salons and Barber Shops waited on the day, May 15th to be announced by

the Governor of the State, that they could resume serving their constituents. Owner, Simone Marsenburg of BLESSED HANDS SALON stated that they were well prepared to provide those services on a regulated basis, procedurally to those walking in the doors. When Governor Dewine made the decision to reopen, “ he stated that he had conferred with several health officials and establishments about recommendations for Nails, Hair Salons, and Barbershops to reopen their facilities and concluded that the following recommendations must be followed if businesses are going to resume”. • Customers may have to wait outside until appointment is ready See BEAUTY BAR, on page 3

A Letter To AMERICA: The Fire Won’t Go Out!

AMERICA, if Lazarus had never gotten sick, he would have never died. If Mother Rosa Parks had not refused to sit in the back of the bus, there would have never been a seat in the front of the bus. And so here we are again today, as we are faced with another tragedy that continues to be pervasive in the lives of Black people. But AMERICA if you had never experienced the death of Black people at the hands of RACISM, SYSTEMIC INEQUITIES, THE PAIN OF A PEOPLE, you would never experience the birthing of misery exemplified in a people whose time has come when the hammer must be lifted off of their back, and a knee off of their neck. The physical fires that you are witnessing now across America, are just an external symptom of the internal fury that has erupted to be out of control. And let me warn you AMERICA that THE FIRE WON’T GO OUT because each example of injustice that adds fuel to the fire, propels and ignites another layer to America’s hypocrisy. Protests have purpose. As bad as it is, as much loss as we have experienced, as much disparity as Black people have encountered, you should know that the FIRE WON’T GO OUT. This uprising AMERICA has caused you pain, caused you loss, Now What? How will you reclaim your comfort level? How will you adjust your emotional gauge? Our BLACKNESS CAN NEVER BE AND SHOULD NOT BE SEEN AS A THREAT TO YOUR WHITENESS! Equality for Black people has been earned not gifted! The blood sweat and tears positioned us to receive what was rightfully ours. Make no mistake about it, the sacrifice was supposed to be worth the experience and not the burden that continues to be hopeless and not hopeful. It’s time to hear the voices, hear what has been ignored, hear what you have closed your eyes and ears to

for more than 400 years. The chaos serves a purpose, not the violence that overshadows the movement. George Floyd lives on. His life will and has changed not a neighborhood, not a city, not a state, but a nation! America, THE FIRE WON’T GO OUT! This pain will produce promise. This pain will cause a new birth. This pain will loose shackles. This pain will re-write America’s history. Why, because THIS FIRE has history and becomes history. And until America there is a BREAKTHROUGH, there will continue to be a BREAKDOWN. Until there is REFORMATION, the REVOLUTION continues. You should know for some that violence has served as a release of the unnoticed catastrophes that you have pretended that do not exist. For others it serves as an overreaction to America’s under-reaction. You must understand that there is purpose in this pain, that there is a message even in the mess, and that there is a full termed birth coming from your pre-mature sins. America, THE FIRE WON’T GO OUT. Long after we are gone, the symbolism of the ashes that represented the results of RACISM, HATRED, INJUSTICE, INEQUITIES, DISPARITY, AND PAYING MORE FOR LESS, will now turn heads To and not From. . The movement is a stark reminder of your stellar throw a rock and hide your hand performance that now comes back to haunt you. The saddest commentary is that your presumed ability to “ FEEL”, lost its place when it comes to Black lives. Dr. MARTIN LUTHER King, Jr. said that RIOTS ARE THE LANGUAGE OF THE UNHEARD! America, do you hear us now? Did you really think that we would continue to accept apathy from you when we cannot get over one death before there are others following, compounding the pain. How many

Trayvon Martins, Eric Garners, Michael Browns, Laquan McDonalds, Tamir Rice’s, Walter Scott’s, Freddie Grays, Sandra Blands, Philander Castiles, Botham Jeans, Ahmaud Arberys, Breanna Taylor’s, and George Floyd’s do you think that we have left before an uprising had to take place. America, THE FIRE WON’T GO OUT! No matter the length, breath, or depth of the pain, there can no longer be the ravages of America’s sins that lessens the lives of Black America. There must be a reckoning in this country that allows Black America to sing in the words of the song written by Samuel Francis Smith, MY COUNTRY TIS OF THEE, SWEET LAND OF LIBERTY, OF THEE I SING.,LAND WHERE MY FATHERS DIED, LAND OF THE PILGRIMS PRIDE, FROM EVERY MOUNTAINSIDE, LET FREEDOM RING! But for many years the song WE SHALL OVERCOME was sang to emotionally place Black America in the hopeful, futuristic, desire for change and the release from RACISM, HATRED, AND THE MALIGNANT, ABSOLUTE, RESIDUE OF INJUSTICES. But America remember this, the tides have turned, the shift has happened, a new tune must be heard now and maybe it’s time for White America to sing the same song that we have been singing for 400 years. Maybe embracing that you are committed to OVERCOMING THE KILLING OF AA MEN AND WOMEN WHO WERE SLAUGHTERED WITH NO THOUGHT FOR THEIR LIFE. MAYBE ITS TIME FOR YOU TO SING A NEW SONG BECAUSE THIS FIRE WONT GO OUT! And with the help of God and your embrace to OVERCOME, WE HOPE THAT IT WILL BE DEEP IN YOUR HEART, AND YOU WILL OVERCOME SOMEDAY! Written By Marjorie L. Holt, Ph. D. ©️2020

Local Pastors: The Pandemonium and The Paradigm

L to Rt. Apostle Marilyn Witherspoon, Dr. Nadine Larde, Bishop Marjorie Holt, Ph. D., Pastor Terry Sutton, Bishop Kevin Sutton, Bishop Patrick Thomas By Interfaith Gazette Staff Many are called but few are chosen rang out loudly and exuberantly on Sunday at the home of Bethesda Christian Center, 5967 Telegraph Rd., as 6 Pastors collectively shouted their voices, as they were distancing, about this new day in the life of the people of God. However, the day came via ENCOURAGEMENT SUNDAY. Bishop Marjorie Holt had gathered some of the local giants and spiritual prognosticators, to convey encouraging messages to those listeners and watchers who religiously wait to be spirit led and spirit fed on Sunday morning away from their Houses of Worship during the absence due to Co-Vid 19. This was the day that the intent was to shift from the PANDEMONIUM TO THE PARADIGM on purpose. And as the day began, Bishop Kevin Sutton from Word of Faith Ministries, provided the prayer and Pastor Terri Sutton read the selected Scripture, 2 Timothy 3: 12-16 verses. Bishop Holt spoke about the present day uprising and welcomed charged, informative, and inspirational dialogue from the participants. Those that were a part of the day were Dr. Nadine Larde of Massive Praise Ministries,

Dr. Nadine Larde

Apostle Marilyn Witherspoon of Altar Of God Ministries, Bishop Kevin and Pastor Terri Sutton of Word of Faith Ministries, Bishop Patrick Thomas of Kingdom Dominion Life Center, and Bishop Marjorie Holt, Ph.D. of Bethesda Christian Center Church. Much of the Encouragement Sunday was just that. Pastor Terri Sutton spoke on how the Pandemic has provided her much thought provoking time to FOCUS ON THE FAMILY. She declared that this time has been an opportunity to identify that there is such a great need for this reflection. Each of the Pastors engaged in inspiring challenges to the Body of Christ to look at where we are and be willing to make each moment count that we are away from each other and the House of God. Bishop Holt ended the 1.5 hour session with the Pastors with a message to America, as it relates to the current events of the riots and pandemonium that we are experiencing. Her focus was “THE FIRE WON’T GO OUT! The presentation will be available to read for those interested in this paper, as well as hard copies that can be requested. It was a day to remember and will serve as a reminder to all of us that truly WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!

BLACK AMERICA...

IN THREE WORDS It is interesting that the life for the African American has often been shaped and summarized in three words. From the early sixties during the civil rights movement, our leaders preached them, we marched and sang them and they were our battle cry: we shall overcome. They were made to appear as something profound and within a stretch of realism when a president of the United States (Lyndon B. Johnson) spoke them before both houses of Congress and in doing so it lifted our heads and gave us a hope that perhaps America realized that we included all of us and that the words of its greatest son was being understood and accepted as true that we are interconnected, tied in a single garment of destiny. And as time and trials would make those three words seem tired and without merit, along came a man who would reinvigorate our fading hopes with his three words to make us believe that in the face of disappointment, disparity and disillusion that the response to the pressures of racism and voter suppression and resistance to the highest levels of power was yes, we can. Those three words drove us to the poles in great numbers and strengthened our feet and joints to stand in lines for hours and days to elect someone who looked like us but could do very little for us and whose time at the top would shine a great light on the rest of us at the bottom exposing the distance…and difference between the two. Oddly enough it was during his time in that gilded seat where the three words of this generation would

scream the truths that he and all Americans needed to hear: Black lives matter. Yet the signs carried in the streets of protest and the t-shirts adorned by thousands would not be nearly enough for those words to be heard as more than a slogan because the men in blue would continue to slay at will the men of black even as they, in exasperated tones Minister Sylvia Rose cried out the words that would truly speak to the level of diminished hope, failed promises, inequitable justice, inadequate housing, ignored medical needs and insufficient education: I…can’t…breathe. Different from the other words, our good white citizens could join us in chorus though in cacophonous tones because despite their well meanings and good intents, their garments always had more thread, their privilege let them do whatever they wanted because

they really could and the value of their lives were never in question. But staggered breathing is ours alone, a technique we’ve perfected in an attempt to keep the lives of our communities functioning and appearing as near normal. But the consequences of this shortness of breath has left us with the underlying weaknesses in health and made us prone to illnesses that lead to our shortened life spans - diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, strokes, heart attacks and of course…asthma. Hundreds of years of racism and white privilege have left us exasperated, our chests pounding, our veins bulging and eyes watered as we try to maintain our lives in the worst and most toxic climates of hatred, injustice and inequality because we…can’t...breathe. The programs offered to us in the past (affirmative action, empowerment zones, etc.) have never matched the widespread damage done by the institutionalization of racism that held its knee to our throats and thus have served as mere oxygen tanks, breathing masks, temporary measures to keep us gasping while the weight of it remained in place and we still…can’t…breathe. Michael Bell: Breaking Chains On Purpose! By Interfaith Gazette Staff Public Service means different things to different people. However for an individual that the City of Toledo is very familiar with, Michael (Mike) Bell, his years of serving in Toledo has spread from Fire Chief, Mayor, State Fire Marshal , and to being one of Toledo’s biggest Cheerleaders. He has spanned the country with the intent to make a difference on purpose. In this interview speaking with him about the state of affairs in this nation during this time, he was not reluctant to share his personal experiences relating to those many opportunities that others used to exercise their assumed privileges with him. He is passionate about helping others, to the point of taking the time to share his opinion, that may be different from theirs, in an effort to stimulate positive discussions from a diversity perspective. He believes that if things, race relations are going to change and improve, that individuals must do it on a one to one basis, so that real dialogue and understanding can take place. He is eager to share his life story with others, in an effort to convey a perspective about the need to establish

Michael Bell relationships and care about others. This present anger that is being demonstrated in the protests around the country, he believes, is symbolic of what personifies his feelings about being in a place where

strangers don’t know you and the results could very well be the same. Getting to know people who don’t look like him is an intentional move on his part, because he believes that this approach is the key to what is a part of God’s plan for each race/ person. One experience that he remembers succinctly is when he and a friend were on a motorcycle trip to North Carolina and being in need of housing. Because the city was not a Metropolitan City, lodging was limited. However, his friend was able to find lodging and he found his way to the hotel where they would spend the evening. Upon getting ready to leave the hotel the next morning, he noticed that a White lady (the Owner) was looking out the window at him profusely, to the point that he approached her and asked if there was a problem. She responded by asking where did he come from. He explained that he and a friend had stayed at their hotel. She shared with him that had she seen him that she would not have provided the room to him because she would not had been comfortable. He spent time talking and sharing with her his life and experiences as being a Black man and by the end of the discussion, she called her husband to meet him and the experience ended I hugs from

her. In fact the discussion ended on such a high note that she invited him to return to the hotel. Mr. Bell stated that unless you take the time to get to know others, there will always be an issue. He went on to state that as it relates to Police Officers, they relate to their own experiences and what they have seen. He believes that people need to get to know and understand the culture of an individual. It is his belief that because of the tragedy of George Floyd, and the fact that his death has impacted the world, becomes an alarm that continues to sound loud and is being heard by those who dared not hear. His present level of service includes non political work as a volunteer with some of the local non-profits, where he works diligently to help people who need help in changing their lives. He educates as much as he can and is always eager to provide a listening ear. It is no doubt that Mr. Bell has found another niche and enjoys what he is doing. He can be reached at mayorbell1@gmail.com God bless you sir as you continue to serve his people.

State Representative Paula Hicks Hudson. Photo, courtesy of AByrdseye Productions By Interfaith Gazette Staff Many voices are speaking during these tumultuous times. However, there is a voice that has gained the confidence of the masses in Toledo and around the State of Ohio, and that is the voice of State Representative Paula Hicks-Hudson, Minority Whip, District 44. As some believe that we are a people crying in the wilderness, it is incumbent that what one hears in this hour has merit and does not warrant second guessing to have to decipher what is true, relevant, and meaningful, juxtaposed to what is not. Many believe that what the country needs now is moral and political leadership to maintain the fabric of democracy in this country. One person who has been consistent in her commitment is that of State Representative Paula Hicks Hudson, a former Mayor of the City of Toledo and a rooted and grounded community Activist. She has maintained a positive

stance and opinion about where the community can go in the future, that will enhance the quality of life for the residents of the city, the state, and this nation. When speaking with her recently, she referred to thoughts that she had about the City of Toledo being the shining city on the “hill” (I. E. Lake). She stated this: “ I spoke of the opportunity for our growth and being a compassionate community. The events of the last four months and this past week, it is apparent that the light is dimmer and the community is struggling to maintain our compassion. Our challenge is to acknowledge the fact that racism is the lens through which our healthcare, education, housing, and economic opportunity policy is cast. She further stated that she is proud of the work that is being done at the State, introducing Legislation to combat minority maternal health, improve infant health, and work for election reform. Justice requires sustained action”.
