Project overview E

site plan scale 1:500

Building consists of three main halls devoted to children in different age groups: five, four and three year olds. Every hall is big enough for 20 pupils and tailored specifically to the needs of each age group. All halls have direct access to garden as well as their own toilets, magazines. For five and four year olds there are provided quiet rooms where children can go to sleep whenever they feel tired or just play in silence. There is no need for another room like this for three years old because all children this young need sleep during the day. The foldable beds are just put up in the hall.

In this tender age children are most prone to learn using all their senses. While most facilities for children are concerned mainly with physical development they tend to forget how importatnt for children is contact with nature. This can be very chalenging in the urban background but it’s crucial in the process of growing up that is why the project was set up in uniqueplace.

The site is adjacent to old dry riverbed now converted into city park and full of natural forms of vegetation. The area around the building is mostly left untouched with playground accessories mounted occasionally on the natural slopes. In the flat eastern part of the site there is a vegetable garden allowing kids to grow their own food and learn how to take care of the plants. Another importatnt aspect of growing up is social contact with another children and also adults. For this reason the building is equipped with the multipurpose hall. It’s aim os not only to allow standarized exercices concerned with rythym, music and physical health but also to host theatrical performances prepared by children for their parents. It’s also the place where kids could meet people from outside, like policeman who comes to talk about his job. The hall is accessed from main foyer, with changing stalls and toilets which makes it a perfect meeting place for local people. In the evenings it can facilitate variety of functions, small cinema, disscusion club, lecture hall and many other.

(1) Focal point of activity inside the playroom is tree-like sculpture serving various functions. It is a playground with climbing elements and it’s main purpose is to help chidren, develop their motor skills, encourage imagination and thinking of new ways of playing. The tree becomes a characteristic element of playroom and a symbol of whole kindergarden.

(3) In the learning area there is an entrance to the other room called the silent room, where children go when they feel tired. It serves mainly as a dormitory but can also be a place of quiet games for those who need to rest from main room noise. (4) Above the quiet room and the toilets is located small additional space accessible by stairs and tree. It’s whole area is covered in soft carpets and mattresses designed for lying and sitting. Here are stored most of the toys and books. It’s also a place of exposition and drawing directly on walls covered in chalkboard paint.

The problem

07

The first buildings of University of Technology were erected in 50’. In the 60’ campus gained the Faculty of Civil Engineering, library and student housing blocks. Their architecture, recessed from the street, created a square which is a subject of this project. Later, new faculties were added to the plans and with them arose new necessities, especially concerning parking spaces. Thus half of the square was converted into a parking lot. Unfortunately this was still not enough and so now the cars are chaotically covering pederstian routes. The infrastructure dates back to the 60’. The neglected green areas surrounding a chapel are in a very bad condition. As if everyone forgotten thet this is the first thing enyone visiting the campus sees. We can’t afford to make such a bad impression. We need a space of maximum flexibility that manages to keep former functions and contain new ones. Space that clearly belongs to the campus, separated from the street noise and at the same time inviting.

Living in narrow spaces Light from above

Type of project architecture

Overview

Function

There are places where each square metre must be used to the fullest. Seemingly inhabitable sites wedged between two bare walls ale a great challenge but the obstacles are inspiring. The task here is to fit entire single family house into a plot that is precisely 4 metres wide. To make things more difficult the only way the sunlight can penetrate into the building are narrow elevations and from above.

single family house

Site area 89,20 m2

Building area 58,42 m2

But how to give such a small area a feeling of spaciousness? First of all, no visual barriers. The walls inside are kept to the minimum. Only the private spaces which need intimacy are enclosed rooms. The rest is all about long vistas. The spaces are narrow but their seamless sequence creates everchanging views. Standing in front of the building you can actually see the small garden located behind the house. The second most important thing is lighting. The only two elevations of the building are almost entirely glazed but it’s way too litlle. We needed to introduce light from above in a form of two light wells. They not only distribute light into every room but also create psychological barriers that don’t block the view but outline spaces serving different functions. In the entrance area the height of two storeys let the light penetrate into the center of the house. The mezzanine has also a function of a small library. The narrow path leading there is covered by the hardened steel mesh. This way the light can go through it and reach the lower level

The square and adjacent spaces are deserted as the effect of dying out of the original function which from the beginning of the city was trade. To bring back the activity which once had taken place on the square we need to change the function distribution. The services including restaurant and cafes must take place of flats located at ground floor level. Additional activity will be gained with the existing restaurants opening its gardens on two sides. The street which now is a dead end and supply parking could became attractive space with direct view on the castle.

191,0

188,6

As a part of revitaization program new sightseeing routes need to be created. The information about routes has to be apparent in the area surrounding square. It’s importatnt that the form of that informtion is well thought-through, original, easy to spot. Its role is to focus attention and make curious rather than inform, like an invitation to play the game of exploring lesser known city parts.

191,60

863

Square is empty because of the historic routes system characteristic to this part od the city. It is located in the centre of triangle specified by three main axis of movement: - main old town street passing through all other squares - main road with vehicle traffic and public transportation - street marking the line of old city walls and connecting downtown with castle None of the important routes pass through square. All paths end in dead ends or walls of buildings.

187,4

8x15 32

What is needed here the most now are strategically placed sitting places that take advantage of terrain formation and spatial connections. Yet people more often than solitude seek accompany to feel safe and are more prone to stop when other people are around. To start this process of gaining new users we first need some kind of attractive function. It can be something permanent like playground or restaurant garden but it can also be activity that takes place periodically like open-air gallery or street performance. We need to support that second kind of activity connected to art, creativity and spontaneous local actions. Imposing fixed, homogenous functions is bound to be a failure inside of the old town where connections were being created centuries ago.

The primary function of newly designed facility is a cafe running through the whole building . It consists of a series of open spaces taking all above-ground floors of a building with a roof terrace offering panoramic views of the castle and the oldest part of the city. The largest, two storeys high, hall opens to the square inviting inside and reviving the firmerly unused space. From the ground floor staircase leads up and down to tables offering different degrees of intimacy and views between the different levels of the building. The cafe becomes here reading room , art gallery and cafĂŠ-bar , which shifts into a small auditorium. This tall, two-storey high hall with its own sanitary facilities can be cut off from the cafe and function as an independent part accessible from the outside. In the evenings, the audience of up to 50 people can gather here to listen to a lecture, watch a movie or a play or take part in discussion. The program is complemented by a multi-purpose cultural hall located in the basement equipped with a system of movable walls, allowing the division into four smaller rooms. Despite the location below ground level, room is well lit from the west side and its extension is a small square by the exterior stairs. Thanks to this the activity taking place in the building may extend to the area of the square and stairs in the summer. IThe same is true for a small library located on the top floor. If the weather allows its surface can be extended by the adjacent observation deck
