Dear Reader Welcome to our Autumn 2014 catalogue. Having been just a gleam in our collective eye a couple of years ago, our kids’ list is well into its advanced toddler stage, getting bigger and better all the time. Highlights this season include another great book from the creative mind of Lydia Crook – The Two Player Big Fun Book, a work of genius that will keep not just one but two kids entertained for hours – and Explore & Draw Pattern which showcases the fantastic illustrations of Owen Davey in an engaging structure that will get children drawing creatively for themselves. There are additions to our two bestselling kids’ series, too. For the grown-ups, the nature side of the list gains an in-depth look at Bees in a beautiful natural history that will be a must-have for both bee-lovers and beekeepers, plus a new Book of…, which reveals the astounding world of Beetles in glorious depth and colour – did you know that a quarter of all known life forms are beetles? And as sales of our 30 Second series pass the two million point in all editions worldwide, the new titles on Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome are guaranteed a keen audience. Crocheters will welcome the biggest-ever compendium of granny squares in A Square A Day – 365 new patterns in a fabulous rainbow format – and The Complete Guide to Quilting, a well-loved classic handbook, returns with a reissue. Regulars will know that our list is nothing if not eclectic, so I’ll round off this abbreviated survey with two new books of Love Stories (on the golden age of Hollywood and the somewhat seamier world of Rock 'n' Roll) – and a glamour-photography title: Beautiful Goats. “Something for everyone” was never invoked with more truth – but they’re all created in our offices in Lewes, in the heart of the Sussex Downs, and, in your company, travel all over the world. We appreciate your contribution to our success, and, as ever, I would welcome any comments and feedback that you may have on our books. The Bee A natural history Eyes with more than 6,000 separate lenses; bodies so hairy that they attract pollen by static; the ability to communicate by dancing... bee stats are endlessly engrossing. And without the bees to pollinate them, most of our crops would be dead in the field. So how did this furry little workaholic come to be so crucial to the planet? The Bee: A Natural History answers that question and many more, exploring evolution, anatomy, society, behaviour and the human factor, and presenting a visual directory of 40 bee breeds. This is the book that will become a buzz word for every keeper, student or lover of bees. Noah Wilson-Rich is a full-time faculty member in the Biology Department of Simmons College, Boston. He is also the founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Best Bees Company, which supplies gardeners and other interested parties in the Boston area with beehives and the resources, materials and consultation on their upkeep, and uses its profits to fund research into bee disease and immune function. In 2012 he gave the number one TED talk on bees, ‘Every City Needs Healthy Bees’.

The Book of Beetles A life-size guide to six hundred species from around the world More than one-fifth of all the known life forms on this planet are beetles. They are extraordinarily visually diverse: the famous British geneticist J.B.S. Haldane, when asked what could be inferred about God from a study of His works, replied, ‘An inordinate fondness for beetles.’ The Book of Beetles takes an in-depth look at 600 significant examples. They are shown in glorious photographs, life-size and in detail, alongside an engraving offering a side or open-winged view. Each profile includes a population distribution map, a table of essential information, a commentary revealing notable characteristics, a list of related species, and a diagnosis of the specimen’s importance in terms of taxonomy, rarity, behaviour and scientific significance. Patrice Bouchard, general editor of The Book of Beetles, is a research scientist and curator of Coleoptera at the Canadian National Collection of Insects, Arachnids, and Nematodes, and co-author of four books, including the award-winning Tenebrionid Beetles of Australia.

Architectural Details A visual guide to 2000 years of building styles Do you know a Doric column when you see one? Of course. But what about an entablature, a hypostyle, a pylon, or a pagoda? Architectural Details uses beautifully engraved plates from the great works of architectural history to illustrate a show-and-tell journey around the architecture of civilizations east and west, from Ancient Egypt to the Industrial Revolution. Most of the drawings and engravings have been taken from early sources, unparalleled for their elegance and delicacy of line, as well as for the amount of fine detail they offer. Extended captions and annotation supply you with a complete naming of parts which, as well as identifying and defining the correct terminology, will help you to understand how architects have planned and made the buildings of the past, from Amenhotep to Palladio, and Vitruvius to Wren. Emily Cole gained an MA at the Courtauld Institute where she studied Architectural History; she now works for English Heritage.

Beautiful Goats Portraits of classic breeds preened to perfection If you’ve never thought of goats as supermodels, the glamorous caprines on these pages will soon change your mind. Every one of these gorgeous pictures captures the natural poise of goats, as they strike a pose and gaze calmly down their Roman noses into the photographer’s lens. Each portrait comes alongside a full description of the breed, its origins, current uses and geographical spread. A succinct introduction looks at the history of the goat while a section of reportage at the back of the book tells the behind-the-scenes story of the goats that took to the catwalk. Felicity Stockwell has an interest in goats stretching back five decades. She has run a commercial goat herd in Norfolk and wrote a column on goats for Smallholder magazine for over 10 years. She currently writes for the online magazine City Farmer on the challenges of urban goat keeping.
