Bird Migration The science of remarkable avian journeys
✤ Current research presented in
an engaging and accessible form ✤ Includes stories, maps,
and graphics to create an engrossing narrative ✤ Looks at a broad range of
species from all over the world
Specification 253mm x 203mm • 192pp 4x4 • hb • est. 40,000 words 200 pics RRP £20
Imagine running 20 marathons every day for a week, without resting, sleeping, or eating. It’s an absurd idea, yet the bar-tailed godwit, a wading bird that typically weighs less than a pound, manages an equivalent feat on its seasonal migration from the Arctic tundra to Australia—and then flies back again. Bird Migration explores the annual cycles of bird migrants, and looks at the physiology of flight, the changes migratory birds undergo, and the particular adaptations that make such feats of endurance and navigation possible—offering a lively, current, and absorbing introduction to some of the great stories of the natural world. Phil Battley is a Senior Lecturer in Zoology at Massey
University, New Zealand, with a PhD on the migration of Great Knots, some of the world’s great bird travelers. Jesse Conklin is a researcher in the Animal Ecology
Group at the University of Groningen. Based in the Netherlands since 2012, he is currently studying the evolution and flexibility of global migratory flyways. Also available:

Deep Thinkers An exploration of intelligence in whales, dolphins and porpoises
We know whales, dolphins, and porpoises are the smartest creatures in the ocean—we read of their tool use, their self-recognition, their complex songs, and their intricate societies—but how do we know what we know? Deep Thinkers brings together the top researchers in the field to examine cetacean brains, compare the intelligence markers of cetaceans with those of birds, bats, and primates, and ask how we define intelligence in non-humans. A comprehensive exploration, setting the benchmark for future titles. ✤ Showcases the extraordinary

In the well-loved Just So Stories Rudyard Kipling’s cat was famous for walking by himself, but in real life the social interaction of the domestic cat—the little tiger in the house—is a far more complex and less isolated affair. The Cat: A Natural History offers a wideranging and thorough look at how cats originally came to integrate themselves with human society, and at how two such different species arrived at a mutually beneficial arrangement, living side by side. In addition, chapters on anatomy and biology look at the complex story of Felis catus, and at the behavior and social habits of both domesticated and feral cats. It’s a beautifully presented study with plenty of fresh insights to be gained for even the most knowledgeable cat lover. Debra Franklin, consultant editor on The Cat: A Natural

IN FOCUS This early exposure to different microbes sets babies born by C-section up for a different microbial community development. Although the gut microbiota of babies born by different delivery modes begins to converge as it develops, differences in the gut microbiota between delivery modes are still detected at the ages of one month, six weeks, two years, and seven years. Certain members of the gut microbiota that aid digestion, such as species of Bacteroides, increase later in babies born by C-section.
How Our Babies are Born
birth canal fluids has a known effect on the baby’s microbiota, making it a little closer to that of a baby born by vaginal delivery. However, determining if an intervention like this provides a health benefit remains to be seen. It would require a much larger study—and years of follow-up.

BABY BEING BORN BY C-SECTION

IN FOCUS
Cesarean sections are critical to the health of mothers and babies in many cases, but may have unintended microbial consequences. When delivered by C-section, babies are removed from the uterus via an incision in the abdomen, avoiding the vagina and its microbial community. Just after birth there is a striking difference between the microbial communities of babies born by C-section and by vaginal delivery. C-section babies have microbial communities resembling their mother’s skin microbiota and which contain typical skin bacteria including species of Staphylococcus, Propionibacterium, and Corynebacterium. In contrast, babies born by vaginal delivery have microbial communities that resemble their mother’s vaginal microbiota. The microbiota of these babies contains typical vaginal bacteria including species of Lactobacillus and Prevotella.
C-sections are associated with an increased risk of developing numerous health problems later in life. Higher risk of obesity, asthma, type 1 diabetes, and celiac disease are all associated with C-sections. The reason for the increased risk isn’t known but it may be related to the differences in the development of the microbiota depending on how the baby was born. The altered microbial community development may affect immune system development occurring during the same time period. Could exposure to vaginal microbes at birth protect C-section babies from a higher risk of health problems later in life? That is the idea behind “seeding” interventions which attempt to transfer the mother’s vaginal microbiota to her C-section–born baby. This swabbing with

Virus An illustrated guide to 101 incredible microbes
Viruses are the last frontier of undiscovered life on our planet. The most abundant type of organism on Earth, they infect all types of cellular life, and, as microorganisms that cause disease in their hosts, they are highly opportunistic and relentlessly efficient. They exist at the vanguard of DNA variance, exhibiting more structural diversity than plants, animals, archaea, or even bacteria. This 21st-century guide offers an engaging introductory section, explaining exactly what viruses are and how they operate, followed by individual profiles of 101 of the world’s most notable examples, each with its own dazzling mugshot. ✤ Each virus profile features

We are sleeping less and less: statistics show that insomnia has reached pandemic proportions, and costs healthcare providers billions. Most of us spend a third of our lives asleep—our bodies insist on sleep; without it, we die. But why we sleep still remains relatively mysterious. The Science of Sleep explains the elements of the sleep state and explores the various sleep disorders and how their available treatments work. By offering an accessible account of sleep science, the book allows the reader to assess their relationship with sleep and craft their own approach to having a restful night with the maximum physical return. Wallace Mendelson MD was Professor of Psychiatry and
Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Chicago and has been engaged in sleep research for 40 years. He has been Director of the Sleep Disorder Center at the Cleveland Clinic, and the Sleep Research Laboratory at the University of Chicago. The Beauty of Numbers in Nature Mathematical patterns and principles from the natural world
Think of a zebra’s stripes, the complexities of a spider’s web, the uniformity of desert dunes, or the spirals in a sunflower head … think of a snowflake. The Beauty of Numbers in Nature shows how life on Earth forms the principles of mathematics. Starting with the simplest patterns, each chapter looks at a different kind of patterning system and the mathematics that underlies it. In doing so the book also uncovers some universal patterns, both man-made and in nature, taking the reader from the basic geometry of ancient Greece to the visually startling fractals we are familiar with today. Elegantly illustrated, The Beauty of Numbers in Nature is an illuminating and engaging vision of how the apparently cold laws of mathematics find expression in the beauty of nature. We’ve come to believe that living in the city is living the very opposite of a mindful life. But, as this book will demonstrate, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Enriching, inventive, ever-evolving, and social, cities abound in the ingredients for sparkling spiritual health. In this upbeat and lively little book, the reader is taken on a joyful journey through the city and given insights into everything it can offer. From observing urban nature to translating “noise” to sound, Lucy Anna Scott shows us how to find a place for both the head and the heart in the city—humanity’s greatest invention. Lucy Anna Scott has a passion for people, plants, and
places. After an unhappy six months in the country she moved to London, where she has now lived for the last two decades. She is the co-creator of Lost in London, an independent magazine celebrating all that is wild, natural, and beautiful about the city, and wearing her other hat as a horticulturalist, she authored My Tiny Garden (2016), exploring creativity in small, green spaces from Tokyo to San Francisco.
