The Chronology of Fashion From empire dress to ethical design

Nails defining fashion moments from the Georgians to date

The Chronology of Fashion focuses on those points when a style of suit or dress, hat or handbag, cut of hair or cloth—or indeed entire look—came to pinpoint its moment in time or radiate out to express its entire era. Proceeding with strict chronology, each spread takes a distinct fashion item, be it a high heel or a low skirt, and displays it in contemporary images. N. J. Stevenson is an alumna of the London College of Fashion. She specialized in vintage, before gaining an M.A. in fashion curation.

his information-packed volume provides an accessible guide to the archetypal symbols used in the art and design of different cultures. By taking a regional approach, it not only explores the origins and meaning of each symbol, but also invites the reader to appreciate the artistic style of symbols within cultures and to cross-reference them to the style of similar motifs elsewhere in the world. Beginning with an introduction to symbolism and its use in art, the book then explores the depiction of symbols continent by continent. Each chapter shares the same thematic approach, enabling the reader to compare regional approaches to representing sacred figures, identity, symbolic systems and allegory. Beautiful colour photographs set the symbols in context, and illustrations enable the reader to visualise everything from Egyptian hieroglyphs to Western heraldry.

The Geometry of Pattern The math + method of constructing pattern

The math and method behind pattern revealed

Pattern and symmetry are key to the creation of truly effective designs. Creating unique and compelling patterns requires a simple understanding of the symmetries at the heart of such designs. The Geometry of Pattern breaks down pattern into different categories and enumerates the possibilities in each based on the mathematical symmetries involved. Robert W. Fathauer holds a doctorate in Engineering from Cornell University and is a researcher at NASA’s jet propulsion laboratory in Pasadena.

The Basque language is currently spoken by about 1 million people (about one-third of the Basque population) as a first or second language. Due to the mountainous nature of the region there are a number of dialects, not all of which are mutually intelligible. There is a standard form of the language (Euskara batua) that is taught in school and promoted by the Basque regional government.

The origins of language, and the cultural relation to trade, are beautifully clear in this example. The word for tea is pronounced differently in each of China’s main teaexporting centers, making it possible to trace the progress of word-forms around the world from three sources.

The map above shows the percentage of the population that speaks Basque. The current Basque-speaking area stretches 160km west of the Pyrenees along the Bay of Biscay, and 50 kilometers north to south. Its major centers are central Biscay (Bizkaia in Basque), Guipúzcoa (Gipuzkoa), and northern Navarre (Nafarroa) in Spain, and in the districts of Lower Navarre (Nafarroa Beherea) and Soule (Zuberoa) in France.

The atlas of languages

The Basque country has been continuously occupied since paleolithic times. Genetically, Basques are quite different from their Iberian and French neighbors. Speakers of Basque used to be located over a much larger region in northern Spain, but the area where the language is spoken has been shrinking over the past 2,000 years under pressure first from Latin, and later from French and Spanish. Basque is a language isolate and cannot be shown to be related to any other language spoken in the world. Its grammatical structure and vocabulary are entirely different from neighboring languages, and it is likely that it is a survivor from a time before the Indo-European languages spread throughout Europe. All traces have disappeared of any languages related to Basque that might have been spoken before the arrival of Celtic, Romance, and Germanic languages in what is now Spain and France.

The English word “tea” has diffused into the languages of Britain’s former colonies, such as Hausa in Nigeria (“tii”) or Warlpiri in central Australia (“tii”). Notice too that colloquial British English has “char” (as in a “cuppa char”), showing evidence of both versions.

 China (te)

A R A G O N

There are two common words for tea that occur in the world’s languages: a form like English “tea” and a form like Russian “chai.” Both come from China, but they originate in different parts of the country where different types of Chinese are spoken. Minnan Chinese, spoken in Fujian province and Taiwan, has “te”, while others such as Cantonese and Mandarin have “cha.” Dutch traders, who were the original European tea merchants, had their main contacts with the city of Amoy (now Xiamen) in Fujian province and so borrowed “thee” as their word for tea. It was this word that then spread to most European languages, including English, French, and German. The tea trade in Europe was controlled by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Their trade was based in southern China where Cantonese is spoken, and so the Portuguese term is “cha.” Tea was also exported from China via an overland route into central Asia and eastern Euope so languages in this region have a word like “chai”, as in Russian and Turkish.

A R A G O N

Across the world, languages have borrowed words from one another, especially where communities of speakers have been in contact for trade and other forms of exchange. Often a borrowed word will be passed from one language to another, with or without a change in form or meaning, and so it is possible for us to map the movement and historical spread of words across the world.

The brachioradialis muscle originates in the arm but inserts into the forearm. This muscle is responsible for rotating the hand so its palm faces forward (supination).

THE ARM the 30-second anatomy In anatomical usage the term 3-SECOND THRASH

In human anatomy, the arm is the part of the upper limb between the shoulder and the elbow joints. In other animals, the term arm can also be used for analogous structures. 3-MINUTE THOUGHT

The humerus is the bone of the arm. It joins with the scapula above in the shoulder at the glenohumeral joint and with the ulna and radius below at the elbow. The elbow joint is the hinge joint between the distal end of the humerus and the proximal ends of the radius and ulna. The humerus cannot be broken easily. Its strength allows it to handle loading up to 300 pounds (140 kg).

86 g Mind & Body

arm refers specifically to the segment between the shoulder and the elbow, while the segment between the elbow and wrist is the forearm. However, in common, literary, and historical usage, arm refers to the entire upper limb from shoulder to wrist. This article uses the former definition; see upper limb for the wider definition. In primates the arm is adapted for precise positioning of the hand and thus assist in the hand’s manipulative tasks. The ball and socket shoulder joint allows for movement of the arms in a wide circular plane, while the structure of the two forearm bones which can rotate around each other allows for additional range of motion at that level. The main artery in the arm is the brachial artery. This artery is a continuation of the axillary artery. The point at which the axillary becomes the brachial is distal to the lower border of teres major. The brachial artery gives off an important branch, the profunda brachii (deep artery of the arm). This branching occurs just below the lower border of teres major.

Coffee: A Life

The OTTOMANS Coffee and coffeehouses were well established in the Levant before coming to Istanbul. Spreading north from Egypt up through Syria, by the mid-sixteenth century coffeehouses had become the most important institutions of social intercourse. Unlike the degenerate pits described by some writers, the coffeehouses in cosmopolitan centers of the Levant, like Damascus, were luxurious—consciously modeled on the Arabic vision of Paradise. Many of them were situated by parks and rivers and had a relaxing, garden-like atmosphere. Inside, there were plants and sometimes even ornate fountains. Customers would sit on benches and divans that lined the walls. Outside, there were seats for those who wanted to drink in the cool of the breeze and, like habitués of the modern metropolitan café, watch the passers-by.

Blissful Beginnings

By the seventeenth century the consumption of coffee in Turkey had become an economic force to be reckoned with. It was soon so prevalent a drink that the Grand Viziers used part of their fortunes to build ornate coffeehouses, rented them out, and watched their earnings soar. Women used the withholding of coffee by their husbands as a legal excuse to sue for divorce. And wealthy agas, when they were feeling especially benevolent, would order that a pot of coffee be brewed to fill up the begging bowls held in the trembling hands of the caffeine-starved Coffee: A Life dervishes who waited, restlessly, outside their houses. In 1638 a comprehensive survey of Istanbul was begun in order to try and disentangle the complex infrastructure that had become an organizational nightmare for the new sultan, Murad IV. The result gives a fascinating insight into the melange of competitive forces that radiated from the administrative center of the Ottoman world. What stands out, strikingly, is its enormous diversity: the cultural, ethnic, and religious make-up of Istanbul in the seventeenth century shows it to be one of the most cosmopolitan cities on earth. Though the ultimate authority was A thousand years ago in the highlands of Abyssinia—the country we firmly in Muslim hands, the population itself was a heady mix of almost now call Ethiopia—a young goatherd was looking after his flock. brane—before finally you reach the bean itself, the endosperm. And how do you decide which part to use? If you choose the nut, what then? Do you eat it raw? Do you boil it, bake it, or fry it in a pan? For many hundreds of years the answer seemed to be to grind the whole thing up, mix it with oil or grease, and spread it on something, as one would do with butter. Except this was butter with a kick. It was, historians of commodities believe, used by nomadic tribes to help them go that extra mile when things were especially difficult—giving them a little boost when they were running on empty. But there is also evidence of something more sinister. Stories emerged of a trail of tears lined with coffee trees leading through Kenya along the route where the slavers took their human cargo. The berries may have been used, some think, to keep those half-starved captives conscious enough to complete their hellish journey.

Of the cavegis— Then another did the same; then another and another, until the entire herd the coffee porters—he wrote: “these were all strong and robust men, each was dancing. Whether the coffee were grinding coffee in marble mortars […] it was the most beautiful berry was first observed to have been eaten by a goat or—more likely—a monkey is impossible to guess. As far as natural science can determine, Coffea arabica, the original coffee plant, is native to the Ethiopian highlands and 23 grew wild there for a very long time before it was actually put to use. But what was that use? The coffee tree (botanists claim it’s actually a bush) doesn’t have a sign on it saying “drink me,” with instructions on how to do it. In fact, the fruit of the coffee tree, the berry, wherein the bean (or seed) resides, is a triumph of vegetal complexity. To get to the beans—there are normally two inside each cherry—you need to go through five layers: first the outer skin, then a layer of mucilaginous pulp, then a layer of pectin, then the parchment hull, then what’s called the “silver skin”—a very tough protective mem12

Cut out all the felt pieces as marked, either photocopying or scanning the templates, or using tracing paper to make templates as described on page 4. Thread an embroidery needle with one strand of yellow floss and stitch the ribbon across the face with a line of running stitch at each edge. Trim the ends of the ribbon near to sides of the face.

2

Use latex glue to stick on the eye patches. Thread an embroidery needle with two strands of white floss and sew the white pupils with small areas of satin stitch. Rethread the needle with two strands of bronze floss and stitch two angled stitches with two more facing them to make the nostrils.

3

Thread an embroidery needle with one strand of lilac floss and stitch the hair piece onto the face with a small overstitch, overlapping the left eye as shown. Thread a beading needle with one strand of lilac floss and stitch on the seed beads in a wavy line. Check their position in the photograph of the finished Archer—they are more widely spaced at the far end of the hair.

4

Thread an embroidery needle with one strand of lilac floss and stitch the front and the back head pieces together with a small overstitch, starting from the point indicated by the arrow in the illustration. Leave the right side of the hair open and stuff the whole gray hair area, from the side to the floating end, with small wisps of toy

stuffing and a matchstick or tweezers to help you. Stitch the rest of the hair shut, leaving the green face piece open.

Carefully push the arrows into the body at the right shoulder. Secure at the body edge with a tiny dot of superglue.

BUILDINGS WITHOUT ARCHITECTS A GLOBAL GUIDE TO EVERYDAY ARCHITECTURE

John May Anthony Reid, Consultant Editor Buildings Without Architects is a wonderfully informative reference on vernacular styles, from adobe pueblos and Pennsylvania barns to Mongolian gers and European wooden churches. This small but comprehensive book documents the rich cultural past of vernacular building styles. It offers inspiration for home woodworking enthusiasts as well as architects, conservationists, and anyone interested in energyefficient building and sustainability.

John May

BUILDINGS WITHOUT ARCHITECTS A GLOBAL GUIDE TO EVERYDAY ARCHITECTURE

The variety and ingenuity of the world’s vernacular building traditions are richly illustrated, and the materials and techniques are explored. With examples from every continent, the book documents the diverse methods people have used to create shelter from locally available natural materials, and shows the impressively handmade finished products through diagrams, cross-sections, and photographs. Unlike modern buildings that rely on industrially produced materials and specialized tools and techniques, the everyday architecture featured here represents a rapidly disappearing genre of handcrafted and beautifully composed structures that are irretrievably “of their place.” These structures are the work of unsung and often anonymous builders that combine artistic beauty, practical form, and necessity.
