The Cell The Origin of Life The microscopic cell is Earth’s greatest success story, and the common ancestor we share with all other organisms. Formed over three and a half billion years ago, life exploded from this minuscule powerhouse, first in the sea and then, over millions of years, across the land to create the complex living forms populating the planet today. How has such a minute organism been so powerful? What has enabled it both to create and to break down life on earth over billions of years? And how have cells interacted to create such an extraordinary diversity of life? Here, Dr David Goodsell shines a spotlight on the passage of the cell through time to explore how a myriad of interactions and symbiotic relationships have been the extraordinary catalyst for life.

✱ Shows the interactions from micro to macro levels that spark diversity on earth ✱ Reveals the symbiotic relationships essential to evolution ✱ Stunning microscopy combines with bespoke infographics to explain the relationships underpinning biodiversity

Dr David S. Goodsell is Associate Professor of Integrative Structural and Computational Biology at the Scripps Research Institute in California. He has a PhD from UCLA, and in his current research divides his time between methods in computational biology and science outreach. For the past 20 years he has developed illustrations of the molecular structure of cells, synthesizing scientific results from microscopy, biochemistry, and structural biology. Dr. Goodsell has authored three books, including The Machinery of Life, an illustrated exploration of the molecular structure of cells, and Bionanotechnology: Lessons from Nature.

Viruses are the last frontier of undiscovered life on our planet. The most abundant type of organism on Earth, they infect all types of cellular life, and, as micro-organisms that cause disease in their hosts, they are highly opportunistic and relentlessly efficient. They exist at the vanguard of DNA variance, exhibiting more structural diversity than plants, animals, archaea, or even bacteria. This 21st-century guide offers an engaging introductory section explaining exactly what viruses are and how they operate, followed by individual profiles of one hundred of the world’s most notable examples, each with its own dazzling mugshot. Dr Marilyn Roossinck is Professor of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology at the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics at Penn State University, and the Sir Walter Adjunct Professor at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia. She has published a large number of scientific papers, and writes for Nature magazine, Microbiology Today, and other popular science publications.

Toying with Numbers The math of toys & puzzles

Also available:

When we think of a puzzle we imagine something that will entertain us. But beneath the surface of math toys lie processes that have many practical applications in our lives. Sara Santos takes the reader on a journey inside the workings of the world’s most enduring toys. From the geometry of Archimedes’ Stomachion, through the algebra of Peg Solitaire, to the group theory of Rubik’s Cube, she looks at the power and beauty of the math underlying our best-loved puzzles, from the elegantly simple to the fiendishly complex. Dr Sara Santos is director and co-founder of Maths Busking and Intelligent Cabaret. She was recognized with the Seed of Science Communication award in 2011 and a Recognition of Distinction at the Europe-wide EngageU competition in 2012. Formerly, Sara was Clothworkers’ Fellow in Mathematics at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, where she led the Mathematics Masterclass.

The Geometry of Pattern

Spring 2015

The key to the creation of symmetrical design ✱ Reveals the math and method behind pattern construction ✱ Shows and analyzes the elements that underly pattern ✱ Supplies a set of principles to enhance any designer’s toolkit

Pattern and symmetry are key to effective graphic design, but the availability of patterns on the internet means that their construction is in danger of becoming a lost art. The Geometry of Pattern addresses this, breaking down pattern into different categories and exploring the possibilities in each. With a chapter on fractal geometry— until recently not available to designers, plus clear explanations and examples, The Geometry of Pattern will form an essential tool in any designer’s kit. Robert W. Fathauer holds a doctorate in engineering from Cornell University and is a researcher at NASA’s jet propulsion laboratory in Pasadena. That’s just his day job—in addition, he is founder of the “Tessellations” website and business, the American Mathematics Society’s juror for mathematical art, and an expert in fractal geometry.

Asking the big questions about economics

What if Einstein was Wrong? asks a team of scholars to experiment with scientific speculation. Consider what if ... you had proof of a parallel universe, or if you could be in two places at once—and learn a little more about the shape that science seems likely to take in the future.

What if Money Grew on Trees? challenges a team of scholars to put their minds to 50 speculations on economics. Consider a world where gold is worthless, nobody manufactures anything, and the bulls and bears are locked out of the market.

Brian Clegg, consultant editor, read Natural Sciences, focusing on experimental physics, at Cambridge University. He has written for Nature,The Times and The Wall Street Journal and lectured at Oxford, Cambridge and the Royal Institution.

How to Read London

How to Read Paris

A crash course in London architecture

A crash course in Parisian architecture

Over 2,000 years of settlement give London its unique architectural heritage. Elegant West End squares hallmark the classical townscape that emerged between 1600 and 1830, but medieval, Tudor, and Victorian enclaves make their own design statement, notably in the City and East End. How to Read London reveals how London’s domestic, civic, and commercial landscape has evolved from imperial capital to global city. Peter Wainwright teaches in the Department of Architecture & Spatial Design at the London Metropolitan University. He trained as an architect at The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, and has worked in practices in London and Los Angeles.

✱ Appealing, accessible guides to two of the world’s great capitals ✱ Offers expert, informed overviews of the myriad architectural treasures of each city ✱ Picture-led resources for architects, architectural historians— and culture lovers

The world’s most visited city is also one of its most architecturally stimulating. Despite Haussmann’s attempt to reshape the French capital in the mid-19th century, Paris retains many architectural gems that reveal its multi-faceted past. From the neo-classical colonnades of the Panthéon to the steel-and-glass futurism of La Défense, this is the guide to the treasures of Paris that every trottoirtrotter will want as a travel companion. Mireille Martin is an art historian and an expert on Art Nouveau architecture who has lived in Paris for nearly 30 years. She has published two titles and has maintained an online blog on “the city of lights” since 1996.

How to Read Towns & Cities

A crash course in 20th century architecture

A crash course in urban architecture

The built environment reveals the history of our age in bricks, mortar, steel, and, increasingly, glass. The last century was hallmarked by rapidly changing social mores, and filled with innovation and inventions. Organized by function, this crash course is a guided tour of architecture that celebrates the fabric of the modern age through the most iconic buildings of the 20th century. Stephen J. Atkins is a practicing architect and urban designer. He regularly contributes to the British and international architectural press and currently teaches urban design at Kingston University.

✱ Concise and invaluable guides to both city development and architecture ✱ Visually rich resources that work equally well for students, tourists, or anyone with an interest in architecture ✱ Introduce readers to a whole new vocabulary of buildings and cities

Towns and cities have existed for thousands of years, their fortunes rising and falling along with the civilizations to which they were attached. This pocketsized guide peels back the layers to help the reader understand how geography, advances in technology, or quirks of history shaped our urban centers, and turns them into urban detectives, as they hunt for clues to see how towns and cities grew. Dr Erica Barlow is a lecturer in the Department of Human Geography at Penn State University and Visiting University Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Oxford. Dr Barlow’s PhD focused on environmental planning policy in Mumbai and Delhi.

How to Read Castles

A crash course in domestic architecture

A crash course in understanding fortifications

How to Read Houses provides the tools for an architectural exploration of the domestic buildings around us. Detailed illustrations offer a visual vocabulary in house types, materials, and parts; and then demonstrate these features in a range of architectural styles. The result will illuminate readers’ experiences of landmark houses and lay the foundations for an exploration of their own homes. Will Jones is a writer and former construction professional who lives in Haliburton, Ontario. He has been writing for international architecture and design periodicals for over 15 years.

✱ Travel-sized guides to identifying key styles of architecture ✱ Strong visual approach uses annotation, photos, and original sketches ✱ Accessible visual guides to the world’s finest buildings

How to Read Castles offers a unique approach to its subject, first building up the reader’s vocabulary of castle types, styles, and materials; and then showing how these aspects can be recognized across architectural features. Focusing on the golden age of castle-building—the period from the 10th to the 16th century—and crusading across the globe, this is both an architectural reference and a visitor guide that interprets the clues in castle ruins. Malcolm Hislop is an archeological consultant. His publications include Medieval Masons and John Lewyn of Durham: A Medieval Mason in Practice.

Architectural Details A visual guide to 2000 years of building styles Do you know a Doric column when you see one? Of course. But what about an entablature, a hypostyle, a pylon, or a pagoda? Architectural Details uses beautifully engraved plates from the great works of architectural history to illustrate a journey around the architecture of civilizations east and west, from Ancient Egypt to the Industrial Revolution. The engravings have been taken from early sources, unparalleled for their elegance as well as for the amount of fine detail they offer. Extended captions and annotation offer a complete naming of parts which, as well as identifying the correct terminology, will help you to understand how architects have planned and made the buildings of the past, from Amenhotep to Palladio, and Vitruvius to Wren. Emily Cole gained an MA at the Courtauld Institute where she studied Architectural History; she now works for English Heritage. ✱ A clear and thorough guide to the history of architecture from Ancient Egypt to the Industrial Revolution ✱ An accessible and succinct way to learn about buildings and architectural features Specification 235mm x 196mm • 352pp 4x4 • paperback with flaps est. 104,000 words • 750 pics

Atlas of Cities Mapping the origins, development, and impacts of urbanization Urbanization is a global phenomenon, but the way cities are developing, the experience of city life, and the prospects for the future of cities vary greatly from region to region. Atlas of Cities presents a taxonomy of cities that looks at different aspects of their physical, economic, social, and political structure; their interactions with each other and with their hinterlands; the challenges and opportunities that they present; and their future potential. Each chapter explores a distinct type of city, with a core case study supported by secondary examples. Paul Knox is a distinguished Professor and Senior Fellow for International Advancement at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

The Atlas of Myth

Spring 2016

Mapping the mythologies of the world ✱ A cartographic approach offers new insights into key myths ✱ Connects maps to myths with graphics and interpretative text ✱ A weblink of interactive photos offers archive recordings of the great myths

Myths connect civilizations with the topography and natural phenomena of their homelands, and offer intriguing traces of historic migration and conquest. What better way to explore the significance of myth, then, than through maps? The Atlas of Myth connects the map to the myth, with chapters organized by geography to explore the connections and to identify the “melting pot” points where myths were plotted, merged, or migrated.

Seeds A natural history At a time when the world faces increasing pressures from climate change and biodiversity loss, seeds have never been more important. Highly complex, they have evolved in myriad ways in order to adapt to their environments. In this book we explore how seed-bearing plants evolved, and unravel the science behind them. We also show how scientists are working around the world to gather and bank seeds to avoid valuable varieties from becoming extinct. Carolyn Fry is a writer and journalist specializing in science, conservation, and natural history. She has written six books, covering climate change, botanical explorers, and plant science. Carolyn has won many awards, including the European Garden Book Prize for Plant Hunters.

As eco fashion becomes increasingly stylish and mainstream fashion gets greener, could it be the end for green chic as we know it? From the good, the bad, and the ugly of fashion to the big trends—we look behind the labels and ask whether the future looks green for fashion.

The Ecologist has set the agenda on food issues for more than 40 years. In keeping with its credentials, this little book covers all things food-related from an ethical standpoint.

Ruth Styles is a fashion journalist and former Green Living editor of the Ecologist.

Pollinator Pals

A family guide to the ground beneath our feet

A family guide to the our garden heroes & helpers

In Soil: A Family Guide, Ben Raskin shares his expert knowledge of the dark stuff with an enjoyable introduction, packed full of funky facts and engaging activities. Teach your kids (and learn yourself) how soil is made, why plants and people need it, how you can rescue a sick soil, and what could happen if you don’t bother! Unearth the science through fun, practical exercises such as testing your own backyard soil’s texture and pH factors, or educational games of Soil Bingo—and enjoy digging in deep to find out about the wonders of nature underneath.

In Pollinator Pals: A Family Guide, you’ll learn all about the power of pollination through a buzzing collection of exciting facts and activities. Predator menus will teach you who eats who in the garden, plus there’s a flower-and-insect matchmaking wheel, and Pollinator Pursuit (a fresh take on a traditional board game). Not only that, but you’ll find out who’s really living at the bottom of your garden, see some of the amazing tricks plants play on insects, and discover how to call in nature’s very own SOS team in to give your plot a helping hand.

Compost

Published

A family guide to making soil from scraps What happens to the food we don’t eat—all those discarded apple cores and rejected Brussels sprouts? Did you know that there are as many living organisms in a teaspoon of soil as there are people in the world? And that worms are our cool, earthy friends? In Compost, Ben Raskin shares his expert knowledge, answering these questions and many more through a whole heap of fun activities and games. Teach your kids that composting is fun and get your family’s feet firmly on the path to a planet-friendly lifestyle. Ben Raskin is the Head of Horticulture at the Soil Association in the UK, and a father of two. He launched the Soil Association’s flagship Organic Apprenticeship Scheme in 2007. Having caught the gardening bug early, while working on an organic vineyard in northern Italy, he has worked in horticulture for 18 years.

Also available: What is soil?

Complexity of soil

You may think that soil is just the dirt that gets stuck on your shoes when you’ve been outside, but there is a lot more to it than that. Soil is a mixture of different minerals, organic matter, water and air. If it is healthy it will also be bustling with life – some things you can see, like worms, and some that you would need a microscope to see.

Types of soil Soil can be divided into different types, according to its ‘texture’. This describes the size of the mineral particles that the soil is actually made of. The three main types of soil are sand, silt and clay.

You could say that we know more about the moon than we do about what goes on under our feet in the soil. With billions of organisms in every spadeful, we only understand a bit of what is going on at a microscopic level in a healthy living soil. There are tiny tunnels, homes, families of organisms and great clusters of activity.

Think of a big city like London or New York, and everything that happens there every day. People eat, talk, fight, laugh, cry… Shrink all of that down so that it fits into a bucket and you can start to picture what is happening down there in the soil.

Most soils are a mixture of these types, and there is a complicated way that soil scientists work out exactly what kind of soil you have, depending on the amount of each one.

Toot toot! We have places to be and compost to make!

WORMY FACT

D SAN

S P E C I F I C A T I O N

Sand has the biggest mineral particles, which measure between 0.05mm and 2mm – that is really, really small, but the other two types are even smaller!

CLAY ✻

Silt particles measure a tiny 0.002mm to 0.05mm and would only just be visible if you had one on your finger.

Out of the way, burrow hog!

Clay particles are the smallest of all, and you’d need a microscope to see them – they are the bits in soil that are smaller than 0.002mm.

In The Forager’s Garden, Milton Dixon offers an introduction to forage gardening, combining a neat and practical guide with a succinct explanation of the philosophy behind it. Heirloom Plants

Fall 2015

A complete compendium of heritage vegetables, fruit & flowers

Heirloom plants often have a charm lacking in commercially produced varieties. And unless these seeds are grown and saved, they will be not only forgotten, but lost, too. Based on the seed catalogs of Thomas Etty, Heirloom Plants lists exciting cultivars to be grown, along with profiles and cultivation tips. Responsible gardening, certainly—but with more than a hint of romance; who could resist the lure of the splendid Hubbard Green Warty squash, or the Green Zebra tomato? Ray Warner is the dedicated seedsman behind the heirloom seed company Thomas Etty Esq., named for his great great grandfather, who himself dealt in seeds in the 19th century. Lorraine Harrison is a keen practical gardener with a master’s degree in garden history. In addition to contributing to the gardening quarterly Hortus, she has authored a number of books, among them the bestselling Latin for Gardeners.

Hollywood Love Stories True romances from the golden days of the silver screen From the earliest days of Hollywood, the pressures of fame led to a febrile atmosphere among its stars. The magic of the movies made audiences’ pulses quicken, but what was really happening in the lives of the actors up on the silver screen? Hollywood Love Stories looks at 14 real-life love affairs across the golden age of the movies, from the 1920s to the 1970s. From the swashbuckling romance between Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, and the poignant lifelong affair between Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, to the scandalous liaison between Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini, each account offers insights and surprises, accompanied by wonderful images and ephemera that bring every love affair vividly alive. Gill Paul is an author and editor with a specialization in history. She has written over 30 books; most recently published are Love Stories of WWI and Love Stories of WWII (2014), the latest book in this popular series.

Royal Love Stories The tales behind the real-life romances of kings & queens Between the late 18th and the mid-20th centuries, many royal marriages represented the unions of dynasties, with true engagements of the heart notable for their rarity. Yet royal couples could fall in love, and this book is full of surprises, from the passionate letters of Queen Victoria to Prince Albert, to the “undying love” that the last Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II, felt for his Tsarina. Amongst them, too, are less happy loves—of Crown Prince Leopold for his 17-year-old lover, Countess Mary Vetsera, or, in the 1940s, of the Prince of Sweden, refused consent to marry the girl he loved; she only became his princess over 30 years later. Bringing the reader right up to modern times, and touching, absorbing, and tragic by turns, these stories bring the glamor and the contradictions of royalty vividly to life. Gill Paul, author of the Love Stories series, is an author and editor with a specialization in history. She has written over 30 books; her most recent title is World War II Love Stories (2014).

✱ The true stories of royal affairs of the heart over the last two centuries ✱ With the letters, personal accounts, and memorabilia that tell the real tales behind the contemporary headlines ✱ Stories told in the context of a rapidly changing world picture, in which the very nature of royalty itself was to change

The Art & Science of Coffee How to make the perfect cup Caffeine is the most widely consumed mind-altering molecule in the world; we cannot get enough of it, and drinking good coffee is our delivery system. How is it that coffee has such a hold? It’s all in the chemistry; the molecular structure of caffeine and the flavour-making phenols and fats that can be lured out from the bean by roasting, grinding, and brewing. Making good coffee depends on understanding the science: why water has to be at a certain temperature, what method works best with which grind, how roast affects taste, what happens when you add cream, which bean you start out with. The Art & Science of Coffee lays out the scientific principles for the coffee-loving non-scientist; stick to these and you will never drink an ordinary joe again.

✱ A clear and fascinating guide to the chemistry of coffee ✱ Comprehensively covers every coffeemaking method ✱ An invaluable handbook for home baristas and coffee lovers

Joseph Murray Monroe is the nom de caffeine of Dr Murray Maloney, who graduated in chemistry from the University of Melbourne in 2007. As Dr Coffee, he runs informal coffee-tasting sessions by invitation. Outside academia, this will be his first book.

The Art & Science of Tea

Spring 2015

How to make the perfect cup ✱ How to make the perfect cup ✱ Comprehensively covers every tea-making method ✱ An invaluable handbook for the lovers of all things chai

How do you like your tea? An ethereal infusion, the ghost of a scent wafting across your taste buds? Or a mug of traditional brew, so strong that three spoons can stand up in it unaided? We’ve been drinking tea for thousands of years, yet few of us realize that all tea types—from elegant lapsang to pungent pu-erh—come from the same source. How so? It’s all down to science: geography, biology, chemistry, and physics, the application of heat and pressure, and the magic of time and enzymes. Making good tea depends on understanding the leaves in your pot, what water temperature they need and how long they should infuse. The Art & Science of Tea lays out the scientific principles for the tea-loving non-scientist; stick to these and extract the best from every cup you make. Elinor Hartford studied biochemistry at the University of Cambridge, in part inspired by learning about tea from her uncle, a renowned tea blender. Hartford has gone on to become a Certified Tea Taster herself, and with her partner has established her own import business, buying rare teas from all over the world. She also hosts pop-up tea ceremonies in London and the west of England.
