How to Build a Cathedral

Constructing the story of a medieval masterpiece Breathtaking in their scale and grandeur, Gothic cathedrals are astonishing feats of construction from a period before steel, machine tools, and computer simulation. How to Build a Cathedral is an illuminating portrait of the medieval architect, a visual exploration of just how these masterpieces came into being, from the initial groundplan to the topping out of the spire. Illustrated throughout with exquisitely detailed engravings, it looks at each element of the structure, explaining materials and methods along the way. Gatefold pages present the evolution of the building’s construction, and a 16-page color section highlights stained glass and decorative elements. Malcolm Hislop is an independent

archaeological consultant with over 30 years’ experience in the investigation and interpretation of historic buildings. His publications include Medieval Masons (2000 & 2010) and John Lewyn of Durham: A Medieval Mason in Practice (2007).

How to Read Houses

How to Read Castles

How to Read a House provides the tools for an architectural exploration of the domestic buildings around us. Detailed illustrations offer the reader the visual vocabulary to recognize house types, materials, and parts; and then demonstrate these features in a range of architectural styles. The result will illuminate readers’ experiences of landmark houses as well as lay the foundations for an architectural exploration of their own homes.

How to Read Castles offers a unique approach to its subject, first building up the reader’s vocabulary of castle types, styles, and materials; and then showing how these aspects can be recognized across architectural features. Focusing on the golden age of castle-building—the period from the 10th to the 16th century—and crusading across the globe, this is both an architectural reference and a visitor guide.

How to Read Art

A crash course in interpreting paintings How to Read Art is an engaging visual guide to Western European painting, encouraging readers to develop their understanding of the grammar and vocabulary of painting, and to discover how to look at diverse paintings in detail. In the first part of the book, The Grammar of Art, the author reveals how to read paintings by considering five key areas: shape and support, style and medium, compositional devices, genre, and recurring motifs and symbols. In the second part, the reader makes an in-depth study of 50 paintings through extracted details, learning how to understand context and discover meaning within art. Liz Rideal teaches Fine Art at the Slade

School of Art, London, and engages with visitors within the Education Department of London’s National Portrait Gallery. Her own work is held in the collections of the Tate Gallery, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Yale Center for British Art. She is the author of Mirror, Mirror: Self-Portraits by Women Artists (2002) and Self-Portraits (2005).

The Atlas of Finance

Mapping the flows of money, from local to global Telephone banking, the internet, and the stateless processes of globalization give the impression that finance exists in a virtual world. In fact, though, financial transactions have origins and destinations, and they tend to cluster in space to various degrees—finance is fundamentally geographical. Until now there has never been an atlas devoted to mapping the financial world, but this geography-centered approach is fresh and engaging, encouraging a view of the big picture—and bringing the complex, abstract world of finance down to earth. Gordon L. Clark is the Halford Mackinder

Professor of Geography at Oxford University. His research focuses on the hot topics of individual decision-making in the context of risk, and the design and governance of financial institutions. Dariusz Wójcik is an economic geographer

and Lecturer at the School of Geography and the Environment, Oxford University. He is the author of The Global Stock Market (2011) and, with Gordon L. Clark, The Geography of Finance (2007).

The Atlas of Cities

Mapping the origins, development, and impacts of urbanization Urbanization is a global phenomenon, but the way cities are developing, the experience of city life, and the prospects for the future of cities vary greatly from region to region. Atlas of Cities presents a taxonomy of cities that looks at different aspects of their physical, economic, social, and political structure; their interactions with each other and with their hinterlands; the challenges and opportunities that they present; and their future potential. Each chapter explores a distinct type of city, with a core case study supported by secondary examples. Paul Knox is a Distinguished Professor and Senior Fellow for International Advancement at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

The Atlas of Myth

Mapping the mythologies of the world Myths explore the earliest origins of a people through their beliefs about the character of their world. They connect civilizations with the topography and natural phenomena of their homelands, and offer intriguing traces of historic migration and conquest. What better way to explore the significance of myth, then, than through maps? The Atlas of Myth connects the map to the myth through themed graphics, an interpretative text, and engaging retellings. Chapters are organized by geography to explore spiritual connections between people and place, and to identify the “melting pot” points on the planet where myths were plotted, merged, or migrated. Arthur Cotterell was formerly principal of

Kingston College in London. His Oxford Dictionary of World Mythology (1986) and The Pimlico Dictionary of Classical Mythologies (2000) still sell globally. His Western Power in Asia (2010) was hailed by the Japan Times as “three-dimensional historiography at its best.”

Sea Monsters

A journey around the world’s greatest monster map Olaus Magnus’s 1539 Carta Marina can be considered the major source of Renaissance sea monster iconography and lore. The map and its voluminous commentary established Olaus as the principal expert of his time on the sea serpent, the giant squid, and sea monsters in general. His marine beasts multiplied in natural histories, and his map was to inspire and influence marine zoology and cartography for centuries thereafter. Sea Monsters introduces readers to Magnus’s fantastic sea beasts. Each creature is introduced by its historical narrative, bursting forth in startling full-bleed art before its meaning and influence are discussed. Joseph Nigg is one of the world’s leading

experts on fantastical animals. His books have garnered multiple awards and been translated into more than 20 languages. They include The Book of Fabulous Beasts, an anthology of the best historical writing on the subject.

The Geometry of Pattern

The math & method of constructing pattern Pattern and symmetry are key to the creation of effective graphic design, but the easy availability of patterns on the internet means that their construction is in danger of becoming a lost art. The Geometry of Pattern addresses this, breaking down pattern into different categories and exploring the possibilities in each, based on the mathematical symmetries involved. It also includes a chapter on fractal geometry—until recently, not available to designers. With its clear explanations and diverse examples, The Geometry of Pattern will form an essential tool in any designer’s kit. Robert W. Fathauer holds a doctorate in

engineering from Cornell University and is a researcher at NASA’s jet propulsion laboratory in Pasadena. That’s just his day job—in addition, he’s founder of the “Tessellations” website and business, the American Mathematics Society’s juror for mathematical art, and expert in fractal geometry. He has also developed a successful range of products designed to teach the mathematics of pattern.

What if Einstein Was Wrong?

50 speculations on science to stir the debate Uses a sequence of “what if?” questions to consider the changing landscape of science

Today, scientists are asking “What if light speed is overtaken?” Einstein’s theory of relativity, so long a cornerstone of contemporary scientific belief, may be a little shakier than once thought. At the time when the hunt for the Higgs Boson is threatening to undermine the foundations of what we thought we knew, What if Einstein Was Wrong? asks a team of scholars to experiment with 50 topical scientific speculations. Consider what if ... you had proof of a parallel universe, if you could be in two places at once, or if there was warp drive—and, in the process, learn a little more about the shape that science seems likely to take in the future.

Neat bites of science that will help broaden the scope of your thinking With historic examples showing just how easily the unthinkable can become the accepted

Jim Alvarez is a science lecturer, writer,

philosopher, and blogger, who combines his love of science fiction with an expertise in predicting scientific trends and discoveries —and their consequences.

What if series “What if?” is the question that can sow the seeds for human speculation, experimentation, invention, evolution, revolution, revision ... and change. At a time when nothing seems certain, this series pulls out some key questions (the ones to which you may have thought you already knew the answers) and re-examines them in a way that’s guaranteed to help you build your interest in (and understanding of ) some important and topical issues.

People often ask me what the best herbs are to give to kids—my top recommendations are medicinal mushrooms. Each medicinal mushroom posssesses its own unique healing propertiess; however using a blend of mushrooms really feeds, supports, and works as an insurance system for the immune and nervous system. I am a big fan off Reishi mushroom for kids. It is a wonderful immune tonic and helps rebuild the lung energy so especcially useful when treating recovery from a chronic cough. Used over the course of a couple of months,, this super mushroom also has the potential to calm an emotionall, hig ghly-spirited type of child. In my opinion, medicinal mushrooms are future foods and are one of the most important, well-researched, and preventative medicines of to oday.

A detailed study of how eras and individual artists can be recognized by the patterns at the heart of their art, and the way in which motifs not only repeat within their composition but also in their use across the years. Progressing century by century, from Ancient Egptian lotus flower through to the flower power of the Sixties and beyond, The Chronology of Pattern discovers intriguing cultural contrasts, narrates the stories of the great pattern innovators, and creates an inspirational design resource for all its readers.

Authored by one of her descendants, this is a fresh, witty, and unsentimental view of contemporary life.

Steampunk Softies

Sweat Shop: The Book

Nicola Tedman & Sarah Skeate

The Paris Sewing Café

’Twas the Knits Before Christmas

The Twelve Knits of Christmas

All emerging from the steampunk world of a past that never was, the eight charming little eccentrics in this book boast meticulous detailing and very definite personalities. They’re simple enough for a sewing novice to make, and call on characteristically quirky (but everyday) materials in their construction. From Fathomless Tilt, the deep-sea diver, to Geronimo Bore, the gold miner, you’ll find yourself engaged by their backstories as you stitch them together.

An inspiring visit to the chic Paris sewing café offers the reader practical projects covering everything from sewing and knitting to revamping and restyling. Includes how-to steps and information on all the skills you need, plus some delicious recipes to help you fuel the creative process.

Fiona Goble

Fiona Goble

A lively version of the popular Clement Moore poem—to knit. With a line-up of characters and Christmas props, from Santa and all eight reindeer (each with its own individual expression) to a full-sized knitted wreath and a festive stocking just waiting to be filled from the contents of Santa’s sleigh, it’s bound to get the festive mood going. A great marriage of storybook and knitting guide.

Everyone knows the Christmas song, and this book offers something quirky and charming if you’re looking for a slightly more unusual seasonal project. Simple enough for novices, but sophisticated enough to appeal to experienced knitters, the 12 projects take you all the way from a plump partridge to the playing pipers and the dancing lords. Plus there’s a sturdy card pear tree to slot together, so the finished group can make an appealing centerpiece.
