The Chronology of Fashion Spring 2011 The Chronology of Fashion focuses on those points when a style of suit or dress, hat or handbag, cut of hair or cloth—or indeed entire look—came to pinpoint its moment in time or radiate out to express its entire era. Proceeding with strict chronology, each spread takes a distinct fashion item, be it a high heel or a low skirt, and displays it in contemporary images. N. J. Stevenson has worked in the industry as a writer and stylist since 1996. An alumna of the London College of Fashion, she specialized in vintage, before becoming an M.A. in fashion curation.

The word for tea is pronounced differently in each of China’s main teaexporting centers, making it possible to trace the progress of word-forms around the world from three sources.

Basque is thought to be the only remaining European language that pre-dates the arrival of Indo-European during the Iron Age. Its gradual retreat over the past ten centuries can be charted with remarkable accuracy thanks to the historical records of successive local administrations. This territorial reduction is shown in the maps below, based on historical records dating from the 10th century to the present day.

The Basque country has been continuously occupied since paleolithic times. Genetically, Basques are quite different from their Iberian and French neighbors. Speakers of Basque used to be located over a much larger region in northern Spain, but the area where the language is spoken has been shrinking over the past 2,000 years under pressure first from Latin, and later from French and Spanish. Basque is a language isolate and cannot be shown to be related to any other language spoken in the world. Its grammatical structure and vocabulary are entirely different from neighboring languages, and it is likely that it is a survivor from a time before the Indo-European languages spread throughout Europe. All traces have disappeared of any languages related to Basque that might have been spoken before the arrival of Celtic, Romance, and Germanic languages in what is now Spain and France.

The map above shows the percentage of the population that speaks Basque. The current Basque-speaking area stretches 160km west of the Pyrenees along the Bay of Biscay, and 50 kilometers north to south. Its major centers are central Biscay (Bizkaia in Basque), Guipúzcoa (Gipuzkoa), and northern Navarre (Nafarroa) in Spain, and in the districts of Lower Navarre (Nafarroa Beherea) and Soule (Zuberoa) in France.

The English word “tea” has diffused into the languages of Britain’s former colonies, such as Hausa in Nigeria (“tii”) or Warlpiri in central Australia (“tii”). Notice too that colloquial British English has “char” (as in a “cuppa char”), showing evidence of both versions.
China (te)
A R A G O N
There are two common words for tea that occur in the world’s languages: a form like English “tea” and a form like Russian “chai.” Both come from China, but they originate in different parts of the country where different types of Chinese are spoken. Minnan Chinese, spoken in Fujian province and Taiwan, has “te”, while others such as Cantonese and Mandarin have “cha.” Dutch traders, who were the original European tea merchants, had their main contacts with the city of Amoy (now Xiamen) in Fujian province and so borrowed “thee” as their word for tea. It was this word that then spread to most European languages, including English, French, and German. The tea trade in Europe was controlled by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Their trade was based in southern China where Cantonese is spoken, and so the Portuguese term is “cha.” Tea was also exported from China via an overland route into central Asia and eastern Euope so languages in this region have a word like “chai”, as in Russian and Turkish.

Across the world, languages have borrowed words from one another, especially where communities of speakers have been in contact for trade and other forms of exchange. Often a borrowed word will be passed from one language to another, with or without a change in form or meaning, and so it is possible for us to map the movement and historical spread of words across the world.

Castles Fall 2011 Castles takes a uniquely architectural approach to deconstructing all forms of fortification, showing how the architect, stonemason, and engineer evolved to repel the destructive power of artillery. Using stylish engravings, punctuated by “anatomies” and featuring cross-reference panels, this book provides both a fascinating narrative and an essential visual reference for the general and military historian. Charles Stephenson is an extensively published military historian, whose books include Germany’s Asia-Pacific Empire: Colonialism & Naval Policy 1885–1914 (2009).

first trimester Congratulations! Assuming the thin blue line is correct and there are no complications, you are going to have a baby in about 38 weeks’ time. During the first trimester (the first 12 weeks) you may have nothing to show for this (except morning sickness, moodswings, headaches, total fatigue and teenage spots), but inside your uterus, it is all systems go. This is a crucial time for his or her development and your body is pumping out hormones and extra blood cells to make it happen. By the end of this trimester your baby will have gone from a microscopic mulberryshaped dot to a perfectly formed little person about as long as your thumb.
Scientists may poo-poo the idea of Baby Brain, but we can only assume they have never had a baby. Gradually you will realise that there are some life events the smarter bits of the brain just can’t handle, and that they should be quiet and make space for the relic brain to do its job. However, that’s not going to happen for a bit, so the first trimester puzzles are pretty much what you might expect for a non-pregnant solver. They have been conceived and designed to be done in short bursts between and to firstnaps trimester distract you from feeling too nauseous.

30-SECOND ECONOMICS
The 50 most thought-provoking economic theories, each explained in half a minute
30-Second Economics takes the top 50 economic theories, and explains them to the general reader in half a minute, using nothing more than two pages, 300 words, and one picture. Economics will suddenly seem a lot more fun than the economy, and make a lot more sense, and along the way you’ll meet the founding fathers of modern economics such as Adam Smith, David Ricardo, and Alfred Marshall. From Marxism to Mercantilism, plus everything in between, this is the ultimate “crash” course in economic theory.

30 -SECOND ECONOMICS
Keynesian Economics, Free Market Capitalism, Monetarism, Game Theory, and The Invisible Hand? Sure, you know what they all mean. That is, you’ve certainly heard of them. But do you know enough about these economic theories to join a dinner party debate or dazzle the bar with your financial knowledge?

Ever wondered what futures and derivatives are, or the difference between fiscal policies and monetary policies? What is the balance of trade, and what are ‘sticky prices’? This entertaining, handy little guide reveals all, in refreshingly simple bite-size tweets.
Profiles the most important economists of the past 150 years and the thinking behind the economic strategies of political parties and governments. Includes an informative glossary of essential economic terms in an innovative format that is easy to read and assimilate.
Compton | Fishwick | Huston
Presents 140 money-spinning terms and intriguing ideas in accessible, informative tweets, each of 140 characters or less.
Katie Hudson has an MA in global political economy and a BA in journalism. She has worked as a consultant for the Economic Policy Research Institute of South Africa and written for publications from The Boston Globe to The Cape Town Globalist.

Nic Compton has been a journalist for 16 years, contributing to a variety of publications. He completed an MA in Global Political Economy at Sussex University, U.K., 2009 and is the author or co-author of nine books, including 30-Second Economics.
We hear a lot about economics in the news these days, but how much do we really understand? All too often experts assume their audience knows as much about the subject as they do. For instance, what is a balance of trade deficit? Why does the amount of cash in circulation affect interest rates? Who sets interest rates? Tweetonomics pecks a hole in the jargon and explains the 140 most important economic terms and concepts in digestible ‘tweets’. The book is divided into nine chapters covering such issues as globalization, boom and bust, ‘green’ economics and the everyday workings of national economies. It also gives an overview of the past 150 years and the people who shaped them.

About the author: Count Vlad Dracula is the best known vampire in the world and a pillar of undead society. This is his first essay into print. He lives with his brides and mother (Mutti) in Carpathia’s fashionable Borgo Pass.
h ow to p l a n t a t r e e
Written in his own vurds, these diaries are a distillation of the past and present of Count Vlad Dracula. He is allowing them to be published in response to the current media frenzy over all things vampiric and undead. These trivial entertainments are but feeble moths fluttering about the penumbra of Vlad’s dark star; for something you can really sink your teeth into, read The Original Vampire Diaries.

ART DIRECTOR Lisa McCormick mccormick@ivy-group.co.uk Ivy Contract is like a hired gun; we sell design and publishing expertise to customers at fixed prices. “Outsourcing” can be an attractive option for clients wanting to control costs or increase their output without shouldering the burden of more overheads. We accept commissions from publishers on agreed budgets, taking on whichever part of the project they decide to sub-contract out, and we never let them down. We’re well established in the industry and our list of satisfied customers and extensive portfolio is testament to both our expertise and our affordability.
