How to Read London A crash course in London architecture

Over two millennia of settlement give London its unique architectural heritage. Private enterprise shaped it and defined its parts: elegant West End squares may hallmark the classical townscape, but medieval, Tudor and Victorian enclaves identified by occupation or class make their own statement, notably in the City and the East End. How to Read London reveals how London’s domestic, civic and commercial landscape has evolved and adapted from imperial capital to global city. ✤ A picture-led resource for

architects, historians and tourists ✤ An accessible visual guide to

the architectural features and significance of some of the capital’s most notable buildings

Chris Rogers writes on architecture and visual culture,

informed by 20 years of investigation and research. He creates and leads architectural tours, often working closely with architects, and is the author of The Power of Process: The Architecture of Michael Pearson (2010) and How to Read Paris (2016).

✤ Creates a vocabulary of

building types and styles, then applies these to a discursive study of London’s domestic, civic, commercial and industrial highlights

The Beauty of Numbers in Nature Mathematical patterns and principles from the natural world

Think of a zebra’s stripes, the complexities of a spider’s web, the uniformity of desert dunes or the spirals in a sunflower head … think of the shape of a snowflake. The Beauty of Numbers in Nature shows how life on Earth forms the principles of mathematics. Starting with the simplest patterns, each chapter looks at a different kind of patterning system and the mathematics that underlies it. In doing so the book also uncovers some universal patterns, both natural and man-made, from the basic geometry of ancient Greece to the visually startling fractals that we are familiar with today. ✤ An appealing look at the

occurrence of maths in the natural world ✤ Gain new insights into

pattern and structure in everything from leaves to shells and raindrops ✤ Accessible science from an

TH E MATH EMATIC AL WORLD

4 ONE DIMENSION In order to provide our understanding with some firm foundations, we’re going to construct a catalog of patterns. If this catalog is going to be useful, there’s got to be some organizing principle. Mail-order catalogs organize their contents into broad categories – jewelry, kitchenware, tools, toys. Ours will do the same, but with different categories – symmetry, continuity, dimensionality... The dimension of a mathematical space, roughly speaking, is how many numbers it takes to specify whereabouts you are. The surface of the Earth is two-dimensional. You know where you are provided you know your latitude and your longitude. If you leave the Earth’s surface, then a third number, your height, is required, so space is three-dimensional. Most of Euclid’s geometry takes place in the plane, which is two-dimensional. Any point can be specified by two numbers – how far it lies along an east-west axis, and how far it lies along a north-south one. A line is one-dimensional – just use an east-west axis. Even simpler is a single point, which on its own is zero-dimensional – you don’t need any numbers to say where you are, because you can only be in one place anyway. A zero-dimensional point is a bit too simple to be interesting, but one-dimensional space has a lot more going for it than you might expect. For instance, think about a line of footprints in the snow. If the person making them is walking in a regular rhythm – say on level ground, no snowdrifts, the simplest ‘default’ movement when the mind is otherwise engaged and the feet move almost of their own accord – then the footprints form a regular pattern of two evenly-spaced parallel tracks. One line of prints consists entirely of left feet, regularly spaced; the other line of prints 4  ONE DIM EN S I O N

ABOVE The dimension of a space is the number of independent directions that exist within it. The space that we inhabit has three dimensions, because three lines can meet each other at right angles. A plane, a flat surface, has only two dimensions, and a line has only one. A space consisting of a single point contains no directions, and is therefore zero-dimensional. In conventional physical space, three dimensions is the limit, but mathematical spaces with four or more dimensions are just as easy to define and think about.
