The Book of Fungi
A life-size guide to six hundred species from around the world The fifth order of the natural kingdom is made up of an estimated 1.5 million species of fungi, found in every habitat type worldwide. The Book of Fungi takes 600 of the most remarkable fleshy fungi from around the world and reproduces each at its actual size, in full colour, and accompanied by a scientific explanation of its distribution, habitat, association, abundance, growth form, spore colour and edibility. Location maps give at-a-glance indications of each species’ known global distribution, and specially commissioned engravings show different fruitbody forms and provide the vital statistics of height and diameter. There’s a place, too, for readers to discover the more bizarre habits of fungi – from the predator that hunts its prey with lassos to the one that entices sows by releasing the pheromones of a wild boar. Mushrooms, morels, puffballs, toadstools, truffles, chanterelles – fungi from habitats spanning the poles and the tropics, from the highest mountains to our own gardens – are all on display in this definitive work.
Dr Peter Roberts was a senior mycologist
at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, for 14 years. He has undertaken field trips all over the world and has published extensively on temperate and tropical fungi. He is co-author of New Naturalist: Fungi. Shelley Evans was conservation officer for

the British Mycological Society for ten years and is on the executive committee of the European Council for the Conservation of Fungi and the IUCN world specialist group for fungi.
‘The new Book of Fungi, by Peter Roberts and Shelley Evans, is a couple of kilograms worth of beautiful mushroom book. The lurid photographs and enticing, offhandedly witty descriptions make the reader want to go out collecting specimens right away.’ POPULAR SCIENCE

Avian Architecture
How birds design, engineer & build The Little Grebe incubates its clutch aboard an anchored floating platform; the Social Weaver establishes high-rise apartments by filling whole trees with immense structures containing dozens of separate nests – and the Village Weaver bind strips of grass into an elaborate hanging nest. Birds’ nests set the bar for the best nature has to offer in terms of functional design, and show the evolutionary process at its most refined. Avian Architecture renders every type of nest in the style of an architectural blueprint, revealing its construction and engineering techniques in detailed annotation. Step-by-step sequences all through the book show the building processes, while case studies profile key species from around the world. Through a combination of cutting-edge text, intricate illustration and beautiful photography, Avian Architecture demonstrates the science and significance of nests, creating a reference that will be as fascinating to engineers and architects as it will to students of bird behaviour. Peter Goodfellow is a retired English teacher and a lifelong
birdwatcher. He has authored a number of books, including Birds as Builders and A Naturalist’s Guide to the Birds of Britain & Northern Europe.

3-Minute J. R. R. Tolkien
A visual biography of the world’s most revered fantasy writer As Peter Jackson’s cinematic hobbits set forth, 3-Minute Tolkien celebrates the enduring influence of the world’s most revered fantasy writer. It offers a readable, absorbing structure, dividing J.R.R. Tolkien’s life and cultural contribution into 60 neat portions, every one digestible in a mere three minutes: 20 mini-sections each on Life, Work and Influence. From a childhood inventing new languages in the sylvan landscape of the Severn valley, through a First World War that saw him witness the horrors of the Somme, to academic success founded on a passion for Old English tales, we trace Tolkien’s life and look at the way in which it informs his creation of imaginary worlds so intricately mapped that modern readers, writers and artists continue to explore them in a quest for their myths, monsters and meaning. Gary Raymond lectures in English & Creative Writing at the
University of Wales, Newport, and is the editor of Wales Art Review. He has given lectures and held seminars on writers including W.B. Yeats, W.H. Auden, John Steinbeck and Emily Dickinson. His interest in Tolkien was originally fuelled while writing an article on the author’s close friend C. S. Lewis.

30-Second Bible
The 50 most meaningful moments in the Bible, each explained in half a minute The Bible has been a bestseller from its earliest days – but it’s a little like A Brief History of Time: most people have a copy, and we all think we know what it’s about, but if you have read it, it was most likely when you were still at school. Do you know why Noah built the Ark? Where Sodom and Gomorrah are? Who was at the Last Supper? And who are the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse? 30-Second Bible offers a fast track to a working knowledge of the Good Book to everyone who hasn’t quite (or entirely, or recently) read the Bible. Split into seven sections, it covers the favourite stories, parables, miracles, Gospels, prophets, personalities, battles and politics, as well as offering a brief explanation of how the Bible came about and which historical figures helped it become the power that it is. It establishes the differences between the Catholic, Protestant and other bibles, discusses why it is the subject of so much debate, and offers insights into the meaning and significance of its characters and stories. Dr Russell Re Manning is Lecturer in the Philosophy of Religion
at St Edmund’s College, Cambridge University. His works include The Oxford Handbook of Natural Theology, and 30-Second Religion.

As a young adult she worked as a stunt girl doubling for, among others, Nicole Kidman and Cameron Diaz, but after a serious accident while working she took a year to heal and, in the process, heightened her awareness of a whole range of holistic disciplines. Now a qualified naturopath and herbalist, she has spent the last eight years treating patients and travelling the world in search of powerful natural remedies and recipes, as well as writing and working as a TV presenter on Natural Kitchen, a series showcasing natural remedies for everyday ailments. This smoothie is packed full of antioxidants and immune feeding medicinal mushrooms.
Blend everything and add whatever extra berry yumminess you want. Because of the rich, dark color, this is obviously a good base smoothie to hide all your green superfoods in— so good for the kiddies!
People often ask me what the best herbs are to give to kids—my top recommendations are medicinal mushrooms. Each medicinal mushroom posssesses its own unique healing propertiess; however using a blend of mushrooms really feeds, supports, and works as an insurance system for the immune and nervous system. I am a big fan off Reishi mushroom for kids. It is a wonderful immune tonic and helps rebuild the lung energy so especcially useful when treating recovery from a chronic cough. Used over the course of a couple of months,, this super mushroom also has the potential to calm an emotionall, hig ghly-spirited type of child. In my opinion, medicinal mushrooms are future foods and are one of the most important, well-researched, and preventative medicines of to oday.

Mindfulness & the Art of Urban Living Discovering the good life in the city
Over half the world’s population already live in cities, and the proportion is rising all the time. Yet we continue to associate the apparently limitless urban jungle with an assault on our senses – a rush made up of noise, light, pollution and people so numerous that they become anonymous cogs in the city machine. Is it possible to take a different view? In Mindfulness & the Art of Urban Living, Adam Ford takes the reader on a mindful journey through the city, absorbing the historical, cultural and philosophical realities of universal urban life, and offering his personal experiences and insights alongside meditative practices to change our view of urban living. Exploring hidden highlights from community projects to urban wildlife, Ford shows how the workings of the city machine can form a rich and vibrant backdrop to every town-dweller’s individual adventure. Adam Ford is an ordained Anglican priest, now retired, who lived
in London for over 30 years. He has an MA in Indian religions, regularly lectures in Buddhism, Hinduism and astronomy, and is the author of Seeking Silence in a Noisy World (2011) and The Art of Mindful Walking (2010).

◆
Stilling the Self
The first question I ask anyone who comes to see me because they are unhappy at work is this: ‘Are you here because you want me to help you find peace with yourself so you can continue on your current path, or are you here because you want me to help you find empowerment to change and do something different?’
Throughout the day, check in with your physical self. Imagine a sensitive laser beam that moves horizontally. Mentally scan your body by placing the laser beam at your feet and slowly moving it up until it passes the top of your head. While scanning, be aware of any tension that interrupts the laser beam. If you find a tension, take
I
f you are dissatisfied with your lot at work, this book is for you. Using mindfulness, you can reduce stress, develop contentment, influence your working environment, and make better choices. A survey conducted by a large online uk-based recruitment firm concluded that 3 out of 4 people are unhappy at work. That’s 75% of workers. Even if this survey is an exaggeration of the truth, something must be wrong with our workplaces if even 10% of workers are unhappy. For that much unhappiness to exist we must be telling ourselves that we are powerless to change things. I know I thought that once upon a time. If you see yourself as powerless, then you are powerless— but that doesn’t mean you have to remain powerless. Spending many hours a day with a group of people you didn’t choose to share this much of your life with, in a job you are not satisfied with, will inevitably create a pressure cooker of tension. Left unresolved, it will fester under the surface, creating stress and taking its toll on your emotional and physical wellbeing.
8
a slow, deep breath and blow it away. After doing this several times, you may notice patterns emerging. Maybe you notice more stress just before or after a meeting, or with particular colleagues or in certain environments.
Help is at hand. Becoming mindful will help you find the personal power to make your life at work the way you want it to be. My aim in this book is to share what I have learned over the last thirty-five years as a mediator, counselor, employee, employer, and human being. What I’ve learned is partially through trial and error, sometimes through luck rather than judgment, often through the teachings of Dr Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication (nvc), but mostly through a passionate desire to turn work into productive play.
Wake Up and Smell the Coffee Are you settling for less than you always dreamed for yourself? You’re not alone. It seems human beings have been taught to do so since the dawn of time; we’ve been conditioned to be discontent. Here, I examine how this leads us to become unhappy at work, delving into childhood dreams and our progression from school career to working life. If we can understand what underlies our unhappiness, we can begin to take steps to remedy it.

Jane Austen’s Guide to Modern Life’s Dilemmas Rebecca Smith
If Jane Austen were with us today, as well as being a world-class novelist she might well have a column in an upmarket glossy. This title imagines the advice she’d give on a range of dilemmas, from love and money to fashion and etiquette. Authored by one of her descendants, this is a fresh, witty and unsentimental view of contemporary life.
When Sherlock Holmes wrestled Professor Moriarty, he used Bartitsu, a manly art of self-defence popular in Victorian England. Master it yourself with this witty little guide, showing every gentleman how to defend himself against an attacker using only an overcoat, a cane, or an umbrella. Step-by-step illustrations ensure that readers can perfect their moves.

Matchbox-sized renderings of the Beatles crossing Abbey Road and a policeman guarding the front door of Number Ten lend a taste of the unexpected and capture some of the eccentricity that’s another aspect of one of the world’s greatest cities. Plus there’s a guide to where you can find the originals when you’ve completed your pint-sized paper metropolis.
Press-out-and-fold pieces enable you to make your own classically elegant chess set: an enjoyable solo or family project. And when you’ve finished, you can play: the book includes a guide to the rules and some key tactics for playing the game of kings, along with a matching fold-out board.
All you need to make and fly a classic four-cell tetrahedral kite, plus easy instructions to size up the basic model to any dimensions you choose, and a photographic guide that shows you how to fly your completed masterpiece to impressive heights.

Recently we’ve added an appealing stationery list, too, which you’ll find at the back of the catalogue. All Ivy titles are highly illustrated non-fiction, and they cover a wide range of subjects, from exhaustively researched and beautifully produced reference books, bringing our visual flair to traditional scholarship, to quirky and eclectic titles on craft and popular culture. Leaping Hare Press represents the conscience of the list, inspiring readers to translate ethical and environmental values to their practical lifestyles, while Ivy Kids, the newest entrant on the blocks, brings the same creative energy to a range of lively titles to appeal to children from 3 up.
